REVERSIONS: One nominee has some horrible tweets!

THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2026

The other two nominees don't: On Monday, it only got worse.

No, dear reader! Mayor Mamdani's three nominees aren't all exactly the same. For example, at least as far as we know at this time, only one of the three has generated an awkward situation like this:

Mamdani-Backed Chevalier Praised North Korea’s Kim in Unearthed Communist-Friendly Tweets

Deleted tweets from Darializa Avila Chevalier (D)—one of the three [sic] Democratic Socialist candidates who won their Democratic congressional primary in New York City last week—showed the congressional hopeful praising communists like North Korean founder Kim Il Sung and lamenting that books by Joseph Stalin weren’t available.

The tweets were unearthed by CNN’s K-File on Monday. Journalist Andrew Kaczynski reported Chevalier praised Karl Marx as an “essential must-read,” complained public libraries didn’t have enough books by Vladimir Lenin and other Marxist leaders, and was upset a bookstore’s “banned books” display did not include The Complete Works of J. V. Stalin.

She also showed affection for several brutal communist leaders.

[...]

The latest batch of unearthed tweets comes after previous deleted posts showed Chevalier describing the U.S. flag as a napkin. She also questioned interracial dating and called for abolishing borders and prisons.

For starters, let it be said that Mediaite's Sean James opened with an apparent misstatement. In fact, only two of the three nominees are members of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The third nominee--former New York City comptroller Brad Lander--joined DSA as a University of Chicago student, way back in 1991. According to the leading authority on Lander's career, "he split with and left the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023 following the October 7 [Hamas] attacks."

At present, two of the three are DSA; one of the three is not. But Avila Valdez is generating headlines which seem to belong to her alone--except on venues like The Five, where imitation journalists loudly pretend that behaviors engaged in by one of the three have of course been engaged in by all.

As in The Sixth Sense, so too here--we Americans have a hard time seeing that we've already become a failed state! That said, are the other claims actually true--the other claims summarized by James?

We aren't huge fans of Kacynski's overall work for CNN, but his new starts off like this

Deleted tweets on Darializa Avila Chevalier’s account had favorable references to communist leaders and Marxism

Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic congressional nominee endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who ousted longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat in Tuesday’s primary, maintained a since-deleted Twitter account with repeated sympathetic references to communism, Marxist ideology and Soviet figures, including Vladimir Lenin.

Avila Chevalier, a sociology PhD student whose victory sent shockwaves throughout the Democratic establishment, has been under fire for a since-deleted Twitter account, previously reported by CNN, that included phrases such as “seize the means of production,” along with calls to abolish police, prisons and borders. Other controversial tweets include one that said Black and Arab men are both “Fetishizing ugly colonizer women” and another that described wiping her dirty hands on the American flag in lieu of a napkin.

As an undergraduate, Avila Chevalier attended Columbia University, where she organized with Students for Justice in Palestine, and after graduation became involved in pro-Palestinian campus protests over Israel’s war in Gaza. She also attended a controversial October 8, 2023, pro-Palestinian rally in Times Square—one day after Hamas’ attack on Israel—that featured speeches and rhetoric praising the attack.

There are some slippery accusation swimming around in that prose. We often get the impression, watching Kacynski's interviews, that his thumbs may perhaps be placed on some scales--sometimes in reports criticizing Blue targets, sometimes in alleged exposes of key Red figures.

On the other hand, has Avila Chevalier issued "calls to abolish police, prisons and borders?" Does she issue such calls today? For the New York Times account of these awkward matters, see yesterday's report

(A brief aside: Avila Chevalier's past complaints about "ugly colonizer women” suggest that she might be best suited for a regular spot on the Gutfeld! show, whose host routinely attacks women with whom he disagrees for being too fat, for being too ugly, and for being insufficiently sexually attractive to satisfy his grisly demands.)

Of the three congressional candidates endorsed by Mayor Mamdani, no one has generated awkward copy in the way Avila Chevalier has done. By possible way of contrast, consider what happened when the third nominee, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, was interviewed by CNN's Erin Burnett on Wednesday, June 24.

Assemblywoman Valdez, age 36 though perhaps looking younger, had won nomination the previous day. The interview started like this:

BURNETT (6/24/26): Out front now, State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, and this is her first national interview since her win. And obviously, it's a win that has sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party, through the Republican Party, you name it.

Assemblywoman, you know, what do you -- what do you think? Now, you've had not even 24 hours here. What do you think your victory means?

VALDEZ: I think it means that the movement that elected Zohran Mamdani last year continues, and that the movement that has been fighting for working-class New Yorkers for years before his election continues. We have a lot to win, and when we go to working people, when we say, you know, "This is our platform. We want to fight for you, we want to fight to abolish ICE and win Medicare for All, to make your lives more dignified and affordable, to empower workers," that resonates with people and we win.

And so, I'm very proud of the campaign.

That's what the candidate said. In Burnett's next question, the C-bombs were cited. She asked about a reversion:

BURNETT: [The president is] seizing, as are other Republicans, on your victory and other victories by Democratic Socialists here in New York as a negative. Let me just play some of what they've said.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (video): Well, they're going radical left. They're going really, you know, you talk about the Democrat socialists, you took really -- it's really Communist.

SPEAKER JOHNSON (video): These are the times that Reagan was warning about. He was warning about Communism overseas. Now it is on our own shores.

REP. SCALISE (video): Call it the Bolshevik Revolution of 2026, but the Mamdani takeover of the Democrat Party is official now.

BURNETT: Okay, now, I'm just going through here, and, you know, Trump using the word "Communist." Mike Johnson using the word "Communism." Is that a badge of honor to hear them talk like that?

VALDEZ: You know, I'm a proud Democratic Socialist. And what that means for me is that my union taught me that when we organize together, we can take on bad bosses, we can win good wages, we can win dignified working conditions. And it's funny that they would invoke Reagan, who famously decimated the labor movement, attacked-- after PATCO, really set the tone for what the federal government has done to the labor movement over the last decades.

My goal in running for office is always, "How do we get as many people as possible into unions? How do we pass the PRO Act? How do we stand on the side of working people so that they have the power to fight for themselves and their coworkers and their neighbors?" And that's the movement that I come out of, and I'm very proud to be a part of that.

Communism, the Communists, and of course the Commies and Bolsheviks! People like President Trump had already swung into action--but is it actually true? Is Assemblywoman Valdez a Communist?

Is Assemblywoman Valdez a Communist? Possibly seeking to avoid participation in a reversion, Burnett never asked!

Along the way, as the interview proceeded, CNN listed the policies Valdez supports. The list of policies appeared on the screen as the interview proceeded.  To watch the full session, click here.

Were we supposed to be shocked by the policies Valdez supports? Tomorrow, we'll show you what those policies were--and we'll show you how they're polling.

All in all, one nominee has left a trail of awkward, embarrassing, exploitable tweets. As far as we know, the other two nominees haven't.

On Fox, they're screaming about the Commies.  We regard that as a striking reversion, but there are quite likely others to choose from.

Tomorrow: Chait spots a different reversion

”What many, I’d say a majority, of Americans support is what Europeans call social democracy — an ideology that is OK with living in a mostly market-driven economic system in which some people make much more money than others, but one that advocates policies to tame markets and inequality with progressive taxation, safety net programs, and regulations.” [Political Wire]

    1. Bernie has talked about being a Democratic Socialist in the style of Western European Democracies for about 40 years. It ain't that hard. Why are conservatives and their mighty mouthpieces getting away with the fucking stupid dirty commie screeching all the time?

  2. Somerby says: "...But Avila Valdez is generating headlines which seem to belong to her alone..."

There is no such candidate as Avila Valdez. There is Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, who is a different person.

It is important to get such details right, especially in a hit piece.

  3. Yes, it is odd that a Democratic Socialist is praising all the same people as Trump likes, especially that North Korean leader who is not someone in history books but stil ruling his country.

  4. The theoretical differences in these 'Democratic Socialists' don't necessarily their impacts. There are various radical positions that they are apt to take, such as support for various forms of price controls, taking over certain private property, higher taxes, more onerous regulations and laws, etc. IMO these things will tend to make living in worse for everyone, particularly the poor. But, I don't know how to predict in advance which of these people will do more damage.

    3. Democratic Socialists will be elected to a system where they will have no actual power, so they can do no "damage" DiCtroll. Republicans under Reagan, Bush Jr , and both Trumps had the power to drastically cut taxes for the rich and corporations, and enact nearly unlimited military and internal police spending. This created a fucking deficit that has become so staggering large under their Republican leadership that it is hard to comprehend how it can be solved without financial collapse. At least socialists can do the maths you fucking moron troll. The damage inflicted to this country by the Republican party will last decades. (And I haven't even brought up what a bunch of jaggoff useless perpetual losing warmongers the Republican party is.)

  5. Electing a radical politician to a body such as the House or Senate will not mean that radical legislation comes out of that body. It means that their point of view will be represented during discussions and may help improve the bills debated. One or even several Democratic Socialists are not going to make all Democrats more extreme because those people also have constituents they report to, who may hold more moderate views. The worst thing Avila Chevalier can do if elected is to make an intemperate statement on the house floor during her 5 minutes. Other legislators must agree (from both parties) in order to pass any legislation. Meanwhile, she is the choice of the people in her district and they don't have to have the same needs as David or Somerby.

  6. As I recall, Somerby said positive things about the Bob Dylan film, A Complete Unknown. It featured a lot of screen time for Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, depicting them as strong influences on Dylan and leaders of the folk scene, singing at demonstrations and union organizing events, not just folk festivals. This is the tradition Avila Chevalier comes from, updated to modern NYC and issues.

But Somerby can't stomach the new wave of young activists. The only question for me is whether this is because he never seriously supported Guthrie or Dylan, he just hummed tunes in college and then became someone who no longer supports Democratic Party values, or he quotes Dylan lyrics solely to establish his liberal cred, so that he can push right wing memes. Woody would turn over in his grave if he read some of what Somerby writes here.

    Pete Seeger:

    "[Verse 1]
Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good ol' union
Has come in here to dwell

    [Chorus]
    Which side are you on?
    Which side are you on?"

I guess we know which side Somerby is on. Just waiting for him to tell us that Avila Chevalier is a dirty immigrant (she was born in TX) and deserves to have her birthrite citizenship yanked for being a commie troublemaker. It is what he means with these nasty attacks he has been writing over the past few days. Valdez and Lander are Ok, but watch out for the bad one who marched for the wrong causes, Somerby snidely hints -- Tarlov doesn't like her...

  7. Back in the days when there were actual communists in the USA, a card-carrying functional chapter of the Communist Party, the communists used to join the unions, not vice versa. The unions have survived and spent a long time being led by corrupt officials who colluded with both government and the owners of the industries they organized. Then the corruption was cleaned up and government stopped being able to co-opt union leaders and workers gained bargaining power.

Valdez overlooks the contributions of Biden to union and workers during his term. If she was part of the "Biden is too old" faction, she was working against union/worker interests. That is moot now, but it seems to me that anyone supporting unions and worker issues must recognize Biden's good work. That doesn't mean Biden was a Democratic Socialist, or not a moderate, but it does make him not a shill for corporate America, the way Trump is and Republicans have been historically.

I am in favor of anyone trying to work hard and achieve change for the better, including Democratic Socialists. I am against nihilist youth movements that call both parties equally bad, want to throw out gains in order to "start over" or "rebuild from the bottom up" because that rebuilding doesn't seem to happen when destruction is the first step. Look at DOGE, for example.

New politicians are sickened by the inability of incumbent Democrats to take strong stands, voice loud criticisms and DO SOMETHING to control Trump and his corrupt cronies. Too many Democrats behaved like craven Republicans and just went along with Congress in order to wait out Trump. Yes, he will die if we wait long enough, but that is not how our reps should have behaved during elections and in office. The lukewarm support for Harris produced the current Trump administration. The Democratic Socialists are getting noisy now, but they didn't help in 2024 when they were needed:

"The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) did not officially endorse or offer widespread support to Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Instead, the organization formally stated that working people "deserve a party of our own" and refused to capitulate to the establishment Democratic platform." [AI]

That is on them and it limits the enthusiasm I can feel for these new candidates, who were no better than those they are removing from the ballot.

  8. Democratic Socialists need to figure out how to pull Democrats to the left, toward achieving their goals, without acting as a spoiler than undermines the left as a whole. Arguably, the Democratic Socialist position of not supporting the ultimate nominees of the Democratic Party caused Democrats to lose some very close elections, including Hillary in 2016 and Harris in 2024. The consequences of this refusal are obvious and severe.

For me, the consideration is whether to forgive them for being less than team players, for casting a vote for Trump (because their failure to vote for Democrats is how Trump won swing states) or give them another chance. I am watching what they do and will decide accordingly. More arguments against Democrats is not going to gain my support despite my sympathy for their goals. Democrats are not the enemy of the Democratic Socialists -- Republicans are.

    1. But was he though?

      "The Debate over "McCarthyism"

While the threat of espionage was real, historians widely debate McCarthy's methods and the accuracy of his specific accusations. Critics and prominent historians argue that McCarthyism did widespread damage:

Lack of Evidence: McCarthy often failed to produce concrete evidence or names during his publicized hearings, frequently using his platform to make sweeping, unsubstantiated allegations.

Unfair Tactics: His methods involved intimidation, guilt by association, and the smearing of innocent individuals' reputations and careers, leading to his eventual censure by the U.S. Senate in 1954.

Excessive Panic: Many scholars argue that the government's response under McCarthy created an atmosphere of unnecessary panic and unfairly targeted individuals who posed no genuine threat.

For a deeper look into the historical evidence, you can review the National Archives' collection of Primary Documents on the Red Scare. [at the Eisenhower Presidential Library].

    2. While there were active efforts by the USSR to infiltrate the US and steal secrets, the situation is different today because Trump has embraced Putin and voluntarily provided him with classified info, agreed to follow his direction, and weakened the US from the top down, doing far more damage than anyone else could, even if it were true that the people Trump accuses of being communist actually were.

Russia put Trump into office and has supported a variety of right wing politicians and businesses. What more could they do by infiltrating Democrats much less the Democratic Socialists?

Given the widespread involvement of Russians already, Trump's attempt to smear Democrats by calling them communists is historically meaningless and ridiculously untrue (like many of the things Trump says). It would be a mistake for Democrats to panic over the label. Our proper response should be to mock this stupid accusation. Like many right wing attacks by the right, this accusation is a confession.

  12. Being a communist is not now and never has been illegal. The same is true for being a socialist. This is a free country. Somerby's attempt to portray this name-calling as important or meaningful shows his support for the right, not his belief in the freedoms we liberals consider important.

  13. Mamdani hasn't taken over the Democratic party and made it socialist. Sarah Longwell (Bulwark) says Democrats aren't becoming social, they are just really pissed. I agree with that. Somerby and the Republicans are misunderstanding the anger, mistaking it for an ideological change. That Somerby joins the right in their arguments today says all we need to know about his motives. The right doesn't really think America is becoming socialist. They recognize that calling people communists may keep Republicans from voting for them.

It almost sounds like Somerby expects Avila Chevalier to apologize for her activism. No one else thinks that is necessary, especially not here on the actual left. Trump is finished. Not even massive red-baiting can save him.

  14. Speaking of tweets, here is a message I just received from Hillary Clinton:

"As America marks its 250th birthday, I find myself thinking about what that really means. Not the fireworks or the ceremonies, but the generations of people who have worked — often quietly and persistently — to expand opportunity and help the country live up to its ideals.

Our founders embraced the enduring truth that we are stronger together. And just as it was for them, there are no guarantees. It truly is up to us.

Bill likes to say that there's nothing wrong with America that can't be cured by what's right with America. At the Clinton Foundation, we believe that's true of the world, too. Even now, we see evidence of it every day in the work we do together, investing in health, opportunity, and communities here at home and around the world.

I still believe in an America with liberty, justice, and freedom for all. That's my patriotism. Let's keep fighting for a more perfect union, for the next generation and all those to come.

Our freedom is our strength. Let's celebrate it and continue working together to protect it."

I agree with this message. It applies to Avila Chevalier and the surviving moderate Democrats. We all want to see progress and return our nation to its senses.

  15. "One nominee has some horrible tweets! The other two nominees don't: "

This is a matter of opinion. I'm sure there are readers who will find horrible tweets among the two nominees Somerby has given a stamp of approval to. And I suspect there are readers who won't find Avila Chevalier (who Somerby doesn't name for some reason) to have such horrible tweets, especially compared to the horrible stuff Trump routinely posts himself.

We don't get to know the context of her tweets and we aren't given them to read, so are they really that horrible? We don't know what she praised about Lenin or Stalin, but Lenin was not as bad as Stalin and perhaps she was comparing who was better or worse for the USSR, or some legitimate topic for a grad student. It isn't as if all mention of historical figures is forbidden if they were naughty. And context matters.

"Retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, Donald Trump's former White House chief of staff, repeatedly warned and admonished Trump for making admiring remarks about Adolf Hitler. Kelly publicly stated that he had to correct Trump's statements by reminding him of Hitler's atrocities and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of American service members." [LA Times]
