...what Senator El-Sayed said: The best thing we saw this morning we saw on Morning Joe.
Thanks to Mediaite's David Gilmour, part of what we saw and heard can be seen and heard by you.
Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed (D-Michigan) was interviewed at some length around the start of the eight o'clock hour. We the people are lucky when we get to hear a bright public figure saying such things as this:
QUESTION (11/5/26): ...What is your message, now that you've won this election, to Jewish voters in the state of Michigan, and frankly national voters who have been watching you very closely and want to know what you will do to protect them in this era of antisemitism?
SENATOR-ELECT EL-SAYED: Growing up, I was really privileged to grow up in a community where about forty percent of my high school class were Jewish. I grew up going to synagogue, going to Seder, going to bar and bat mitzvahs growing up.
I have so much respect for the Jewish faith and Jewish contributions to American life. I also know what it’s like to be discriminated against for how I pray. And I want an America where nobody is discriminated against. Under our Constitution, you can pray as you choose to pray or not pray at all.
The idea that anybody should feel unsafe in their synagogue or their day school, to me, is anathema. I know what it’s like to drop off my kids to a mosque and wonder if they’re going to be safe, and I’m going to be able to pick them up safely afterwards.
I think we are all united in the work of making sure that no matter who you are, you are safe in this country, and I’m committed to the safety of Jewish children like I’m committed to the safety of my own children.
The question was asked by Willie Geist. To see this part of the interview, and for Gilmore's fuller report, you can just click here.
El-Sayed has said these things many times. Last night, his very name was still being mocked and ridiculed by the eternally brainless Jesse Watters on the brainless Fox News Channel program brainlessly known as The Five.
Later, on the Gutfeld! show, the astoundingly brainless demonization and slander only got worse. These are the garbage cans which get rolled out by the Fox News Channel each weekday night.
This afternoon, we'll offer a thought about the remarkable sweep of Tuesday's election wins. At this site, we were impressed by El-Sayed's lengthy interview, but we were especially glad we got to se him make those familiar remarks again.
(Yes, we do believe that he means what he says. We realize that some people don't.)
Briefly, a personal note:
We were lucky as a kid, in the summer of 1960, when our family moved from the more hidebound segregations of the Boston suburbs out to the freer air breathed in San Mateo. To us, our friends were all just Aragon kids, with one Hillsdale kid thrown in, but they were allowed to present with different identities, with no one much seeming to care.
That includes the Jewish kids who became some of our most treasured friends. That sort of thing still wasn't allowed in the previous locale. On our way into eighth grade, we were very, very, very lucky when our family picked up and went west.
We're glad that we got to see what El-Sayed just said. Last night, we'd seen the garbage cans rolled out. Before the week is done, we'll link you to what was said.
ReplyDelete"...and I’m committed to the safety of Jewish children like I’m committed to the safety of my own children."
Standard pol's bullshit, eh? And something for Dumbocrat idiots to adore, and probably to jerk off too, while watching it over and over. Pathetic.
Oh well.
Or he could be sincere. It's possible. I'm sincere but have never been as nice as Abdul is or pretends to be, so I could never get elected to anything. Bob tends to give most everybody the benefit of the doubt more easily than I do.
Delete
DeleteSincere? He cares about strangers' children just as much as about his own?
Well, in that case, the only possibility I see is that he is a psycho who doesn't care about any children at all, including his own.
The reason you weirdos lost is so many people are tired of the gaslighting, hate, and bullshit (not to mention corrupt criming). No coherent arguments. Nothing but garbled crap. I don't know if you noticed, but it stopped working. Bigly. Give it up already.
DeleteTriggered, Hillary?
DeleteTrumptard, help me settle a bet. About how many hours a day do you spend picturing Democrats jerking off? Rough guess.
DeleteNo, but you are. Again, why would anyone be interested in your bullshit? What do you bring to the conversation?
Delete
DeleteI see your morning enema made you grumpy again, my dear Hillary.
Really?
DeleteMao is being sincere when Mao says “the only possibility I see is that he is a psycho.” Mao is lying when Mao indicates that El-Sayed claimed to care about other children more than his own.
DeleteSee how that works?
DeleteWhat Brooke at Wonkette says: "Will they get the message? Of course not! But now we know what they are, so we can do it again, and again, and again. Or just never stop.
DeleteLet’s all find the closest white supremacist scum to us right this second and tell them to their faces how bad they suck and then laugh at them when they cry.
LOSERS!"
Whoa, a retard with aggressive fantasies. Scary.
DeleteHaha loser.
DeleteShortly before the election we found out that Trump sexually harassed an 8 year old, when he had previously indicated in an interview that he draws the line at 12.
DeleteThis kind of talking out of both sides of your mouth that Trump does is why Republicans lost.
If Trump had been more straightforward about his age preferences, Republicans would have won in a landslide.
Republicans don't care what crimes you commit or how corrupt you are, they just want their leaders to be straight with them.
Once again, Bob endorses the GOP.
ReplyDeleteBob thinks Marco Rubio would be a good decent President.
DeleteHe also thinks JD Vance would be a good decent President.
DeleteHarmeet Dhillon would be a good decent President, but she wasn’t born here.
Delete"Bob endorses the GOP."
DeleteWhy lie to yourself? How does that help you feel better about yourself?
No, it makes me feel worse.
DeleteBob's agenda is closer to causing harm for Dems than outright supporting the GOP.
DeleteIn his heart, it is not hard to infer or discern from his writing that he supports a right wing agenda but frets that some contemporary Republicans are too unrefined, which will harm the movement in the long run.
Good statement. Words are easy. Let's see who he chooses for aides. Let's see how much he supports the Jewish State.
ReplyDeleteHe doesn’t support the Jewish State when it commits crimes against humanity.
DeleteYou offer nothing but bullshit David. His entire career as an Oxford PhD has been helping all people. Folks are not buying your BS no more.
DeleteAre you talking about the settler-colonial entity in Palestine? It seem it's getting desperate, and its days are numbered.
DeleteI believe he swears an oath to defend the Constitution not Bebe’s fat criminal ass
DeleteIt's Israel, David. Don't call it the "Jewish State", even though it is a theocracy. Israel cares nothing about Jews in general.
DeleteDon't try to make Jews like me complicit in Israel's policies. Most Jews are very luke warm on Israel. Furthermore, Israel itself would be better off with a more even-handed US policy, and I hope El-Sayed will be a voice for such policy.
El-Sayed may be the single best Democratic senator-elect.
Good comment, Ilya. But is Israel really classified as a theocracy? There seems to be a little uncertainty about that term as applied to Israel.
DeleteIsrael is not a theocracy because it is not governed by religious leaders. Nor does it have an official state religion. AI says: " The legal system incorporates a parallel religious courts system that holds exclusive jurisdiction over specific personal status matters—such as marriage and divorce—for recognized religious communities (Jews via Halakha, Muslims via Sharia, and Christians via canon law). However, these are managed within a broader secular legal framework."
DeleteA minority faction supports making Israel a nation governed by religious law, but that is not the current situation in Israel.
The main idea behind modern Israel is that God chose the people of the Jewish religion to occupy that land.
DeleteIndeed, one of the reasons Israel does not have a formal constitution is because many Israelis see the Torah as their constitution.
Israel is both a theocracy and an ethnostate.
DeleteIt's a settler-colonial geopolitical entity, with ethno-centric ideology, similar to Nazism of the mid-20th century Germany.
Religion is considered one of the ethnic characteristics, but not a particularly important one, for the recent generations. A light, superficial version of religion is deemed desirable, but the full-blown religiosity is frowned upon. Even scorned.
@2:21 is using the term "theocracy" incorrectly.
DeleteAs to the constitution, Israel has a set of "Basic Laws". These form a de facto constitution.
" In 1995, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that these Basic Laws function as a supreme constitution, granting the judiciary the power of judicial review over ordinary laws that conflict with them."
You've been Tsunami'd David. Nobody wants to read your pulled out your nasty ass bullshit around here no more. Get fact based or get lost.
DeleteI am going to go out on a limb and agree with both Nelson Mandela and the Archbishop Tutu, who, each after separate visits to Israel, declared it an apartheid state.
DeleteThere is a diminishing number of citizens in this country who support the Jewish State, if that is what you want to call it, and that is entirely because of the activities of the so called Jewish State. As time and the cable channel’s own decreasing popularity inexorably erases the Fox viewers from our census, Israel will be more and more seen as an entity that is not aligned with our interests. Young conservative Republicans who joke about their Nazi leanings in group chats , the banners in Charlottesville, and Trump supporting holocaust deniers in the blogosphere should make clear to Jews residing in this country that antisemitism has some roots in the Republican Party. The vast majority of Americans at this point would agree that withholding 3.3 billion dollars given to Israel annually is a first step in rectifying this situation and it should be a first order of business.
DeleteYes, we should end aid to Israel. It will be hard to get Chuck Shumer to agree, though.
DeleteThere are other ways of looking at that issue that also have some merit. It isn't as if Israel has set out to create such a state for the same reasons as it existed in South Africa. Nor are apartheid conditions imposed solely on minorities in Israel.
DeleteTrump has said he will end aid to Israel by merging their military systems with ours. Is that what anyone wants?
DeleteNo.
Delete"Last night, we'd seen the garbage cans rolled out. Before the week is done, we'll link you to what was said."
ReplyDeleteWhy? We do not need to read or watch Gutfeld to know that he is rolling out garbage. Somerby might do better to quote the various anti-Semites in Trump's administration or show us the hatred of Jews among the bros on Musk's nazi twitter platform. There is a serious conspiracy theory about global Jewish domination among Trump's appointees and staff. That is worth telling others about, not Gutfeld's Islamophobia, which failed to derail El-Sayed's campaign effort.
Or Somerby might mention their weirdness on election day when Trump said he was going to stop giving aid to Israel to purchase weapons, and was engaged in merging the Jewish and US military. That sounds way more troubling than Gutfeld's unfunny propaganda and hate speech.
It has been a very long time since Somerby used his blog to discuss actual issues affecting our country.
Another candidate for the nonexistent position of Somerby's assignment editor who hasn't bothered to read the mission statement: "Musings on the 'mainstream' press corp and the American discourse."
DeleteDG, others have pointed out to you many times that Somerby himself does not stick to, or do much of a job of, musing about the mainstream press. No More Mister Nice Blog routinely does what Somerby claims to be doing, much better. You can contrast the two to see what an actual media analysis blog looks like. This isn't it.
DeleteDo you think we all need direct exposure to another dose of Gutfeld's bigotry, or can we believe what Somerby says about it?
DG has a point. Maybe Somerby doesn't want to do a better job musing about the press.
DeleteIt seems to me that instead of following anything besides his few cable shows, he just wants to sit under is pear tree and re-read My Antonia, especially the underlined parts.
There is no "mainstream" press, there's corporate media and independent media.
DeleteI went and checked out this No More Mister Nice Blog on your recommendation. The blog itself was well written but the comment section reminded me of when I was in grad school and was pretty much required to attend my professor’s cocktail party in Palo Alto. Holy Christ what a bunch of boring, pseudointellectual, pompous-ass bullshit. Nearly fifty years have passed but it still gave me flashbacks. Not that the sewage posted here is highly enlightening.
DeleteThis blog opposes lewdness, whether from the left or the right.
DeleteThis is a serious and thoughtful blog.
If this were a serious blog, Somerby might have said the positive things about El Sayed that he has been saying today, yesterday instead, so that those making up their minds about how to vote could have benefitted from his thoughts.
DeleteI would hope and expect that nobody reading this blog would be swayed by Somerby’s comments into changing their vote.
DeleteBased on your comment 2:44, I'd just stay away from Comments.
DeleteThe comments appear to be moderated, so there are no equivalents to the trolls this blog is infested with.
DeleteMorning Joe is the TODAY show of politics: superficial.
ReplyDeleteit's a joke.
Agree.
DeleteAlso well describes this blog.

Delete"That sort of thing still wasn't allowed in the previous locale."
ReplyDeleteWinchester MA, where Somerby grew up, does have Jewish families now and a Jewish congregation. Somerby no doubt encountered Jewish students at Harvard but apparently didn't befriend them, given the chance. Instead, he rebranded himself as a Southerner, under the influence of Tommy Lee Jones and Al Gore, and upon graduation immediately moved to Baltimore, which is 4% Jewish, the same as San Mateo, CA. That is also the same % as Muslims in Baltimore. I don't notice Somerby claiming to have befriended any of his Muslim neighbors, anywhere he has lived.
Claiming now that his best friends were Jews in San Mateo sounds like the kind of thing people wishing to avoid being called bigots say. It means absolutely nothing in the context of this discussion of El Sayed's attitudes toward Jews who are his constituents. Why did Somerby even bring it up? In this context, it tends to otherize Muslims compared to Jews, because Somerby didn't befriend them.
I have lived many decades as a Jew in America, the only antisemitism I have personally encountered was when around White Republicans that did not know I am Jewish and they let loose some pretty vile bigotry.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Jews in Israel live in constant turmoil, but that is of their own making.
El-Sayed is just alright with me, I am glad he was elected, his policies are good and I think he will have a positive impact on our politics and our society.
I'm a non practicing Jew. In my white conservative suburb a neighbor comes and says do you know David is a Jew? Yup I do. Well he's not any kind of Jew, he's the Jewy Jew type of Jew. I told her to fuck off.
DeleteAh, a Negro lady? Yes, some of them do talk like that. Let 'em be, retarded Dumbocrat.
DeleteLoser.
DeleteSomerby today references David Gilmour (not the PF guitarist) early but then later refers to him as "Gilmore".
ReplyDeleteSee, this is what Dems do.
You go in one person, and they transition you into another person, and you're all mixed up and nobody knows who anybody is anymore.
I don't know if I am supposed to be attracted to Husted's ass or Minaj's ass. (Frankly they both look like they smell like ass)
Do I eat meat or do I find another protein?
It is chaos.
Please make sense. If you are capable that is.
DeleteThe ass is an animal, related to the horse. It has an odor which I do not find attractive.
DeleteTry beans Corby,
DeleteBeans, beans, the wonderful fruit,
The more you eat the more you toot!
The musical fruit.
