On first looking into Boston’s Fenway Park!

Momma raised us kids right: Here’s the box score of the first Red Sox game we ever attended.

It was Opening Day 1956; we were barely eight. For some reason, our sainted mother decided to take our sister and us to the Fens.

One day later, we flawlessly described the action to an enthralled third grade class.

The Red Sox started the season with three straight wins that year. We recall coming home from school on this, the afternoon of their first loss, to find our mother out in the yard.

When you root for a team, they don’t always win, the sainted woman explained.

People, that is so true! Momma raised us kids right!

It was windy and cold in the famous old yard as a pair of young children complained. Luckily, the play was just as brisk as the breeze.

Length of game: 2:19! When we got home, we had time to prepare a thought-provoking yet concise show-and-tell.

  1. Since my mother died when I was a toddler, I imagine "sainted" her talking china patterns and taking me wedding gown buying.

It's always a good reality check to be made aware that she just as well could have dragged me to some damn sports event.

    No "bubble" thinking here.

  3. Frank Malzone, Jackie Jensen, Jimmy Piersall, Don Buddin, Sammy White, & the great Ted Williams - those names bring a smile to my face Bob- they were my heroes while growing up on the North Shore in the 1950s. My first game at Fenway was about the same time.

  4. Meanwhile Mo Dowd's Irish mother was burying her face in pictures of John F. Kennedy, as Mo dreamed one day of rolling on JFK's shag rug.

  5. Often when you lose, someone else wins. If you can handle the loss, it seems more ethical to me to lose.

    Competition is a scourge.

  6. Yes, she raised you right.

It's been lonely tonight, no game to watch. Me, this Yankees fan rooting for the Red Sox.

  7. Sorry to interrupt the East Coast lovefest here, but there are two teams involved in the World Series, and the other team is also a very much storied franchise in a city that absolutely loves baseball.

Two years ago, the Cardinals won the Series then promptly lost their superstar to free agency. They compensated with a farm system that pumped out talent, especially pitching, and including the young phenom who will take the mound for Game Six.

They didn't skip a beat. Last year, as the Red Sox were going through a nightmare season, the Cardinals took the NLCS to seven games before losing to the eventual World Series champion.

And here they are back in the World Series again -- in the very year that their icon passed away.

Whoever wins this Series will be a very worthy champion.

  9. Diasaggregating BOB's box score we find white players out hit black players 23 to 1. No black Boston players got on base. Baltimore did bother with relief pitchers.

    1. The Boston Red Sox were also the last major league team to integrate, waiting a full 12 years after Jackie Robinson to add Pumpsie Green, its first black player, to the major league roster.

    2. And just to further clarify, Bob's box score from April 17, 1956, was still three full years before Green and the integration of the Red Sox.

    3. Which is why no black Boston players got on base.

And why the two black Baltimore players, who both appeared as pinch hitters, did not "break into the major leagues" until they wer both over thirty.

Coming: How many black Americans currently play for the Sawks?

    4. Well, applying the logic of Somerby, Somerby obviously does not care about black baseball players.

Except, as we have learned, it is grossly unfair to apply the logic of Somerby to Somerby.

    5. Yeah, none of this comes within a astronomical unit of making sense, let alone being clever criticism.

    6. Mine, Matt, was not meant as criticism of BOB. It was meant to reinforce the role of race in your violent past history.

    7. Update

Sawks win. They had exactly one black American on their roster. That is one more than the St. Louis Cardinals, who had none. The Sawks player saws action in one game as a pinch runner. He stole a base.
