Supplemental: Back when Nicholas Kristof was different!

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2015

Sanctimonious blowhard, heal thyself:
We’re so old that we can remember when Nicholas Kristof was different.

In today’s column, he’s at it again. He drops his first B-bomb on Alabama as early as paragraph 3!

At one time, he wasn’t like this. We’re so old that we can remember when Nicholas Kristof might start a column like this:
KRISTOF (4/24/04): I've argued often that gay marriage should be legal and that conservative Christians should show a tad more divine love for homosexuals.

But there's a corollary. If liberals demand that the Christian right show more tolerance for gays and lesbians, then liberals need to be more respectful of conservative Christians.
“Hug an Evangelical!” That’s what his headline said!

We don’t know how often Kristof had argued for same-sex marriage at that time. As of 2004, he hadn’t made the argument often in his New York Times column.

On the other hand:

Back in those days, Kristof was much more tolerant of beliefs which differed from his. This is the way he continued in that column:
KRISTOF (continuing directly): One of the most ferocious divides today is that between evangelical and secular America. Some conservative Christians are all too quick to sentence outsiders to hell. And liberals denounce stereotypes of Muslims but not of ''Christian nuts.''

It's encouraging that the right is less hostile to gays and lesbians than it used to be. President Bush argued in his 1994 run for governor that gay sex should be illegal, while now he feels comfortable hitting up gays for campaign contributions.

On the other hand, the left seems more contemptuous than ever of evangelicals.
On the whole, we tend to agree with what Kristof said that day! In our view, it was encouraging that the right was less hostile to gays and lesbians than it had been in the past.

But how odd! As of today, it’s Kristof himself who is openly “contemptuous of evangelicals,” as you can see by reading his new column.

He drops his first bomb right in paragraph 3. When our Dimmesdale thunders today, this is the way he begins:
KRISTOF (2/12/15): In North Carolina, three young Muslims who were active in charity work were murdered, allegedly by a man who identified as atheist and expressed hostility to Islam and other faiths. Police are exploring whether it was a hate crime, and it spurred a #MuslimLivesMatter campaign on Twitter.

And, in Alabama, we see judges refusing to approve marriages of any kind because then they would also have to approve same-sex marriages. In one poll conducted last year, some 59 percent of people in Alabama opposed gay marriage. Somehow a loving God is cited to bar loving couples from committing to each other.

These are very different news stories. But I wonder if a common lesson from both may be the importance of resisting bigotry, of combating the intolerance that can infect people of any faith—or of no faith.
Was that a hate crime in North Carolina, or was it a terrible crazy crime? If it was a hate crime, was it a hate crime “from the right” (hatred of Islam) or a hate crime “from the left” (hatred of religion)?

So far, nobody knows. But as of this morning, Kristof was already tilting a bit toward hate-crime-from-the-right. People like this have always loved to encourage a good cleansing war.

More strikingly, Kristof moves quickly to same-sex marriage, and to sunny Alabam'. Fifty-nine percent of the state is opposed to same-sex marriage, so Kristof drops his bomb.

Back then, Kristof preached patience and respect. Today, those people are bigots.

You may prefer the newer version of Kristof. We’d be inclined to disagree, for political and moral reasons. (There is no law which says that everyone has to agree with Kristof's views, or with our own, on a timetable he has set.)

For today, we simply thought it was worth noting the change in Kristof. At one time, he was quick to preach understanding. Now he tends to “otherize,” a fact which is a bit ironic given the larger theme of his column today.

Kristof’s opposed to “otherizing”—except when he’s the one doing it! We think he was wiser in 2004, when he drew hope from the progress he saw among people who hadn’t reached the exact same conclusion he had at the exact same time.

Is Nicholas Kristof losing his soul? We wouldn’t rush to deny it! But in our view, he’s been doing some very strange journalism, a point we’ll explore again tomorrow.

His trip to Haiti struck us as quite strange. This may be what happens when a big journo gets over-extended, overloaded with stars, becomes a big Hollywood “brand.”

The shape of the tribal mind: At one point, Kristof says this today:

“It seems odd to me that so many conservative Christians are obsessed with homosexuality, which Jesus never mentions.”

Really? Kristof finds that odd? We can't imagine why!

To us, it seems unfortunate when people are obsessed that way. But it doesn't exactly seem odd. Not long ago, people were much less agreeable in this area than they are today.

Fifty-nine percent are opposed to same-sex marriage in Alabama? That strikes us as a very low number, given the culture of the state.

In 2004, Kristof thought things were getting better. We still think things are getting better, though we doubt that those B-bombs will help.

Apparently Kristof, like POTUS Obama, believes rampaging Christians are still a problem. It is radical Islam that is the current problem. Neither Obama or Kristof can put those two words together. History is not dependent on POTUS Obama acknowledging the past., even when his recollection of historic events are flawed as NYT Ross Douthat illustrates.

    1. As I heard it explained, our allies in the Middle East, the leaders of Muslim countries working with us to combat extremism, have explicitly asked us NOT to refer to radical Islam because it undermines their efforts. I tend to support the President in furthering the efforts to combat a common problem in the most effective way possible. I believe the right is using this as a stick to beat Obama for political purposes. I consider it unpatriotic of conservatives to be doing this in the midst of an ongoing military struggle.

  2. Michael from BaltimoreFebruary 12, 2015 at 4:58 PM

As a gay person who followed the campaigns of George W.Bush and John Kerry in 2004, I can say for certain that I did not feel Evangelicals becoming more tolerant of homosexuality that year. A friend's mother, who is conservative, evangelical and a perfectly nice woman in very many ways, was working at my polling place that year, specifically because Mr. Bush was supporting gay marriage bans in so many states, and she felt she needed to help. (I was not out to her when she told me this, (though I was generally out), because there was no real reason to talk to her about it, and it seemed sure to create a division.) As a gay person, 2004 felt horrifying because evangelicals were supporting marriage bans. I do not think we should take Mr. Kristof's word for it that evangelicals were becoming more tolerant - and I think it is somewhat strange that he mentioned Bush's gubernatorial campaign from 1994 (10 years earlier!) as proof, when clearly, something entirely different was happening in 2004. The atmosphere did not feel more tolerant to me, and the intolerance appeared to be coming from the religious right.

    1. What was your comparison point? Are you suggesting that 1994 was more tolerant or do you think it is inappropriate to compare against any past point in time rather than to a standard of complete tolerance? I think the turning point for improvement was Stonewall and the Gay Rights movement, and my comparison is what existed before that. In those terms, 2004 was much better, even in the South.

      Delete
    2. Why does he need a comparison point? Why isn't the FACT anti-gay marriage amendment" ballot issues to get evangelicals to the polls in 2004 enough?

So I suppose the Willie Horton ad of 1988 wasn't so bad after all because racism was a lot worse in 1958? And even worse in 1858?

    3. i find it interesting that historic objections to gay marriage based upon expressly stated religious beliefs are indication of hate, but lying about your stance in order to get elected (as David Axel proudly declares of Pres. Obama) is fine and dandy.

Michael of Baltimore, if it's hatred that fires your friend's mother to oppose same-sex marriage, what is in when politicians play feign agreement for political expediency?

If you can't respect the religious tenet behind opposition to gay marriage at least respect the fact that it's not stealthy, but is right out there you to engage.

That's better than your contrarians got with this president.

Yes, it makes a difference in policy as far as the way science is taught in public schools, but it makes very little if any difference in most policymaking including "politics and economics," which are two areas in which Gravy said he would not want someone of a particular faith making policy, Gravy goes on to indicate the beliefs are a measure of "stupidity" but they are not.

One can make a much better argument against atheists creating policy, since the most fundamental ideas behind freedom, such as "all men are created equal" are spiritual assertions, nowhere to be found or proven in science and nature.

The Internet Gen Ed-degreed progressive crowd likes to ridicule it because they mistake understanding and adopting a fairly simple idea with overwhelming scientific evidence backing it up with "brilliance."

Every hack low-IQ comic has a "What's up with the Christians?" schtick, intended to permit himself and his audience to thrill at their own impressiveness and savvy in being "in on" something the squares are too dumb to figure out.

  5. Bob, don't you realize that progressives don't believe in respecting or understanding the other side in the debate over gay issues. Their goal is not to have a respectful debate of ideas between reasonable people, it is to successfully brand any and all opposition as completely taboo in the public sphere.

And they are justified that they will be successful, largely as a result of the debate over race. Progressives won that battle by using the same tactics that you decry, and as a result they have made any deviation, no matter how tiny, from the orthodoxy that all humans are completely equal, no matter their ancestry, tantamount to thoughtcrime. That's their goal with the gay debate as well, and they have been wildly successful ignoring your advice to be reasonable.

I very much doubt that Kristof's fundamental belief as to the righteosness of his cause and the wickedness of the anti-gay marriage cause really changed over that ten year period. What changed was the feasibility of different tactics.

Tactically, In 2004 it would have been insane for Kristof to go in full barrel with B-Bombs blazing. At that time the pro gay marriage position was a distinct minority one, and all the momentum appeared to be with the other side. At that point he had to advocate for understanding - to do anything more would have exposed his forces, so to speak, to great enemy fire at a time when they were outnumbered and vulnerable.

In 2015, however, the face of the battlefield has completely changed. The anti-gays are now outnumbered and retreating - morale is very low. Now Kristof's side has the ability to deliver a knock out blow, and they are anxious to use it before the enemy can flee and somehow regroup.

Said the tactically insane Kristof in 2004:

"bigotry toward people based on their faith is just as repugnant as bigotry toward people based on their sexuality"

I don't know if that qualifies as "full barrel" B-bombing, majneb, but it was certainly double barreled.

Why not tell us the "other side" on gay issues, and the "other side" on the question of fundamental issues based the color of one's skin -- or rather, the genes that produce a darker color so long as they originate in Africa. (The genes that produce a darker skin in Native Americans and their descendants in Latin America are different.)

While you're at it, also tell us how someone with genes that came from Africa are supposed to feel about and react to proponents of "the other side" on whether they are equal to European Americans or not.

    1. My intention is not to debate the merits of either of these issues, but to show how they are analogous. Progressives certainly view them analogously, and thus feel justified in lobbing B-bombs at those they view as insufficiently pro-gay, just as they have long felt justified in lobbing B- or R-bombs at those they view as insufficiently pro-racial equality. And in fact, that strategy has worked brilliantly for the Left on racial matters, so contra Bob, why shouldn't the Left also feel justified in invoking it on gay matters?

      Delete
    2. Being unable to imagine the views of people who disagree strikes me as problematic, a kind of mental bigotry.

The "other side" on issues of gay rights or racial equality is not based on the humanity of people (e.g., their genes) but based on how to decide specific issues, such as whether people should be married or whether they should be given preferential employment or admission to college. Those specific situations are always complicated and involve much more than whether someone believes in "equality" or "fairness." The differences of opinion arise from those details, which progressives seem to believe are clear cut. For example, based on "fairness," women should greatly outnumber men on all college campuses and Asian applicants should be the majority admitted at UC Berkeley because their grades and test scores are far higher than those of most other applicants. Is it fair to adjust those %s to achieve some idea of racial balance that does not recognize merit? Progressives ignore competing values that trouble conservatives. You may disagree about how to resolve that specific question, but you should be able to recognize that there is a valid "other side" that involves something other than knee-jerk racism.

If you truly do not know what the "other side" is on various contentious issues, you are not talking with enough people outside your particular political bubble.

    What does Bob tell you?

"Back then, Kristof preached patience and respect. Today, those people are bigots."

Yes snarls Somerby, Kristof now throws the "B" word (bigotry) in the third paragraph. In 2004 he preached patience and respect.

What does Bob leave out? Why the double barrelled "B" bomb Kristof dropped on his readers at the end of his "better" column in 2004:

"And bigotry toward people based on their faith is just as repugnant as bigotry toward people based on their sexuality.

There's more, but perhaps I'll save it until Somerby continues his jihad against Kristof.

Kristof was preaching against bigotry then and now.

      Delete
    6. The point is not what Somerby does -- he is not a journalist. The point is how our media informs us (or doesn't). That is much more important than Somerby's supposed hypocrisy because we depend on a competent media to function as a democracy. We don't depend on Somerby for that, although I think he aids in that goal.

You have been voted chief troll. Please take a bow.

    7. Every priest or minister who ever preached a sermon is a hypocrite in the same way as Somerby. Why do we not mock our religious leaders?

But you did just mock them all by such a comparison.

  9. "I am old enough to remember that as long as he has been writing, Bob Somerby has not fundamentally changed. He is still a gigantic hypocrite."

Wow, mighty big of you. And what's your saving throw? Why it's Kristof's big marble filled mouth:

"And bigotry toward people based on their faith is just as repugnant as bigotry toward people based on their sexuality."

Can you imagine a more stupidly obvious statement?

You: "Somerby preaches that liberals are lazy, dumb, disliked and immoral."

You (perhaps "a liberal"?) provide little rebut.

    1. So Kristof made the same "stupidly obvious statement" in 2004 about bigotry among right wing Christians that he made in 2015? And therefore I need to rebut Somerby's bigoted statements about liberals?

Seems to me that makes this an obviously stupid post by Somerby and an obviously stupid comment by you.

  10. Back when Kristof was different? Talk about waaaaay back.

I'm old, too. I can remember when his obsession/cause of child prostitution in East Asia. After a while it began to seem the columnist protested too loudly. Not that he was guilty himself, but he seemed to think about child protestation an awful lot. I kept waiting for him to announce that he had, you know, adopted some of those girls in order to, you know, save them.

  11. THANKS TO DR BENEDICT FOR SOLVING MY PROBLEMS

An amazing testimony on a spell caster who brought my wife back to me.. My name is Andy Sowers,i live in Australia, and I'm happily married to a lovely and caring wife, with two kids.A very big problem occurred in my family seven months ago, between me and my wife.so terrible that she took the case to court for a divorce.she said that she never wanted to stay with me again, and that she didn't love me anymore. So she packed out of my house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get her back, after much begging, but all to no avail.and she confirmed it that she has made her decision, and she never wanted to see me again. So on one evening,as i was coming back from work,i met an old friend of mine who asked of my wife.So i explained every thing to her,so she told me that the only way i can get my wife back,is to visit a spell caster, because it has really worked for her too.So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow her advice. Then she gave me the email address of the spell caster whom she visited.{benedictsolutioncentre@gmail.com}. So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address she gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my wife back the next day. What an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning, So surprisingly, my wife who didn't call me for the past seven {7}months,gave me a call to inform me that she was coming back.So Amazing!! So that was how she came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and she apologized for her mistake, and for the pain she caused me and my children. Then from that day,our relationship was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster DR benedict. So.

    "Tomorrow: Breaking! Kristof in Haiti"

"Is Nicholas Kristof losing his soul? We wouldn’t rush to deny it! But in our view, he’s been doing some very strange journalism, a point we’ll explore again tomorrow.

His trip to Haiti struck us as quite strange."

  14. Let's see. Kristof looks at poll numbers against gay marriage in Alabama and sees bigotry. Bob looks at the same numbers and sees a state with an "unfortunate" culture that should produce even higher numbers of what Kristof calls bigots.

    That about sum it up?

  24. My name is Elizabeth Taylor from UK. I never believed in love spells or magic until i met this spell caster once when i went to Africa on a business summit. I meant a man who’s name is Dr iayaryi (driayaryi2012@hotmail.com) he is really powerful and could help cast spells to bring back one’s gone, lost, misbehaving lover and magic money spell or spell for a good job or luck spell .I’m now happy & a living testimony cos the man i had wanted to marry left me 3 weeks before our wedding and my life was upside down cos our relationship has been on for 4years. I really loved him, but his family was against us and he had no good paying job. So when i met this spell caster, i told Dr iayaryi what happened and explained the situation of things to him. At first i was undecided, skeptical and doubtful, but i just gave it a try. And in 8 days when i returned to UK, my boyfriend (now husband) called me by himself and came to me apologizing that everything had been settled with his mom and family and he got a new job interview so we should get married. I didn’t believe it cos the spell caster only asked for my name and my boyfriends name and all i wanted him to do. Well we are happily married now and we are expecting our little kid, and my husband also got the new job and our lives became much better. His email is (driayaryi2012@hotmail.com)
