THE GUARDIANS FILE: Digest of reports!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2018

New chapter starts tomorrow:
Achilles begged for the help of the gods. We need the help of logicians!

Tomorrow, we offer the first report in our rational animals file. Below, you see links to our reports from the guardians file:
Tuesday, September 25: Major professors abandon their posts! Semantics and paraphrase!

Wednesday, September 26: Plato actually got this one right. Our professors keep getting it wrong.

Friday, September 28: You know what you saw at yesterday's hearing? Plato saw the same thing!

Monday, October 1: Achilles needed the help of the gods. We need the help of logicians!
So it went in our guardians file.

That said, our "Aristotle's error" opus now includes five such cycles. For links to all reports to date, you probably know what you can do:

  2. "Tomorrow: From the rational animal file, C-Span's first dozen callers" and a link that doesn't work.

    Was Somerby going to perhaps urge caution in believing those accusers of Kavanaugh? Did that go out the window as more witnesses came forward?

    Maybe he wants to defend Trump for his accusation that female reporters never think (and the doctoring of the White House transcript)? Maybe he was planning to tell us that humans never think?

    Whatever it was, he seems to have changed his mind. Hard to claim that boys will be boys and women can't remember straight, when it seems Kavanaugh may be a stone rapist and a mean drunk. Best you can do now is attribute his bad behavior to his neanderthal genes and move on to the next nominee. Being a little slow, Trump hasn't copped to that inevitability yet.

  3. Why did so many teens behave badly in the 80s? Because of leaded gasoline in the 60s and 70s.

    1. If this were true, all teens would behave badly. Lead affected teens in certain neighborhoods more than others (such as close to freeways and in areas with lead paint or industrial environmental lead). That is not where these affluent teens lived and not what they experienced growing up. You have to blame this on culture, I think.

    2. No, the incidence of bad behavior would increase, but not all teens would behave badly.

      General rudeness, which is fairly common, would be very common. Criminality, which isn't extremely common, would be somewhat common. Outright depravity, which is rare, would be less rare.

  4. Shakespeare understood Kavenaugh's anger

    Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
    Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
    Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
    'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
    But he that filches from me my good name
    Robs me of that which not enriches him,
    And makes me poor indeed.

    1. Man, you are one silly, simple son-of-a-gun. Do you realize you are quoting Iago, a psychopath and the biggest villain in all of Shakespeare? Do you have any idea what irony is?

      Delete
    2. Yes, I know its Iago's line. Still, it vividly presents the idea that one's good name is more important than money. It explains why Kavenaugh ius so upset.

    3. Kavanaugh was so upset because he was drunk.

    4. David, you knowingly posted Iago's lines? To show that Kavanaugh manages his reputation just like a VILLAIN managed his? And for the same reason?

      Delete
    5. Caesar -- that line is not about how Iago manages his reputation. Although the line is part of Iago's plot, the fact that Othello falls for Iago's false excuse supports the idea that one's reputation is highly valuable.

      Iago hints that one of Othello's officers, Cassio, has been making time with Othello's wife. On top of this innuendo he plasters a seeming reluctance to reveal the fictitious affair, because that would ruin Cassio's reputation—and to "filch" from someone his good name is a much more serious crime than stealing his purse. Honor is an essential possession, something that can belong to you and to you only; your money, on the other hand, remains what it is even if thousands of others have handled and possessed it. Compared to honor, then, money is mere "trash."

      Iago's speech is in ironic contrast to his exhortations of Roderigo to "put money in thy purse [see PUT MONEY IN THY PURSE]. When it suits his purposes better, Iago can exclaim that virtue's "a fig" (Act 1, scene 3, 319), and that reputation is merely something one cultivates in order to hide his true intentions. It rather suits his purposes here, however, to cloak his evil intentions—his desire to ruin Othello's marriage—in the pieties of friendship and sacred respect for another man's honor.
