Two ways of viewing Donald J. Trump!

TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 2024

George Conway, One Other Guy: We just saw George Conway on Deadline: White House refer to Donald J. Trump as "a narcissistic sociopath."

He also used the term "psychopathy" as he discussed Trump's mental / emotional state. As we've recently noted, Conway has been walking that lonely road since at least October 2019

We just saw Conway take that approach. Then we visited The Atlantic, which currently features a new analysis piece bearing this pair of headlines:

Trump’s Contempt Knows No Bounds
Judge Juan Merchan sanctioned the former president for the first, and likely not the last, time.

The Atlantic's writer is shocked, just shocked, that Trump continues to behave this way.

Fundamentally, there are two basic ways of describing Donald J. Trump. The approach that seems to make scientific / medical sense is the one the mainstream journalistic culture almost wholly rejects.

The fellow just keeps doing these things! Why do you think that is?

Why? Because the "scientific" opinion only comes from two possible sources: armchair analysts who aren't actually qualified to make such judgments or professionals who are bound by their ethics not to speculate about people they haven't examined personally.

If we could find a qulaified doctor who has examined Trump (and is not bound by an NDA) and made these assessments about him, that would be news.

    1. On re-reading, I see that I'm answering a question Our Host didn't ask. I explained why mainstream journalistic culture rejects these judgments daily. But Our Host asked why Conway keeps doing what he does.

He gets paid to do so, would be my guess, by the same media Our Host says rejects his claims.

    3. Perhaps a more pertinent question is as follows: what the fuck does it matter what the "psychological" explanation is for Trump's behavior??!!!! How would it help us to "know" that? Don't we already know something's not quite right with him -- whatever anyone wants to call it? Let's say the top psychiatrist makes it official and says Trump is a "sociopath." AND?? Therefore???? What would that change?? Unless it changes enough votes, what would that proclamation do for us??? It likely wouldn't change a damn thing. It certainly wouldn't change Trump. Would it change the votes of the people who STILL, after 10 years of endless video, audio, and print detailing his every insane statement and action, support him? You'd have to have a screw loose yourself to believe that. If witnessing a sociopath's insane rantings and behavior for the past 10 years hasn't changed their minds, what makes you think some few words from an "elitist liberal shrink" is going to change their minds?

The most important thing right now is to stop him. And instead, you're helping him by castigating the people trying to stop him while at the same time coming to his defense.

  2. Being disordered doesn’t excuse Trump from things like gag orders. There is no reason for the press to make excuses for Trump, especially when he has not been examined and has no medical diagnosis to justify Conway’s comments.

Note that Somerby has been ignoring the increasing evidence presented by neuropsychologists saying that Trump has middle stage dementia. Why?

    1. Unlike the personality disorders, dementia can be diagnosed from samples of Trump’s public speeches and behavior.

    2. There are different types of dementia and a diagnoses requires a medical exam. Mental illnesses and personality disorders have discernible behavioral and psychological signs and symptoms too.

How convenient for you to make the claim that the condition of dementia is different from other mental and personality disorders since you wish to continue castigating Somerby as being inappropriate in his insistence that Trump’s mental state is ripe for discussion, yet also justify your own accusations that Trump has dementia.

    3. It doesn’t matter why Trump does what he does. His behavior makes him unfit to be president.

  4. There is a pay wall over at The Atlantic but what is available to read on this side of it is not written by anyone suggesting that they are shocked by Trump’s behavior. Behavior which cannot be described in one all-encompassing descriptor. There is the longstanding behavior of screwing over the public either in the form of nonpayment to vendors or overcharging tenants or grifting off of Trump enterprises or charities. This has been going on for as long as Trump has operated as a businessman. So what can be argued as the worst, hard wired, traits and activities have nothing to due with cognitive decline. Then there is the mumbling and discombobulated speech pattern that appears to be evolving and is the subject of speculation about dementia. Contrary to statements above, an expert in dementia, even a non expert in the medical field (and others, it can be assumed) can identify dementia when they see it displayed in multiple public appearances, irrespective of whether it is professionally sanctioned to air that opinion publicly, and the details of what type it is may be interesting and have some bearing on future expectations, but do not change the summary assessment that he is/is not demented. The longstanding narcissistic disregard for others and recent progression in the realm of dementia is a dangerous combination.
