...the Commies are taking over: Will Democrats be able to gain control of the House in the mid-term elections? Is the Senate a possibility? We'd say there's no way to know. One thing does seem to be clear:
With wins by DSA members in Democratic Party primary elections, the GOP's campaign slogan is coming clear. It seems to go like this:
Communist Communists Commies!
As the reversion continues, it's much like the good old days!
It isn't just Jesse Watters, who ran up an astounding Commie / Communist / Commie word count during last Friday's Jesse Watters Primetime. It isn't just the sitting president, who has also been throwing the C-bombs around.
Last evening, Vice President Vance connected himself to the famous old theme. Below, you see the way Laura Ingraham teased his forthcoming appearance on The Ingraham Angle:
INGRAHAM (6/30/26): Coming up, my exclusive interview with Vice President JD Vance. He has a prediction:
How long will Schumer last in this new socialist Bolshevik Communist surge? Next!
It isn't just a Communist surge. It's also a Bolshevik surge!
After a commercial break, there was Vice President Vance. After a bit of a birthright exchange, the rubber was hitting the road:
INGRAHAM: You've been following what's going on with the Democrat [sic] Party and the rise of socialism. The president calls it Communism and says this is the biggest threat to the country now, an internal threat...
So my question to you is, are these DSA types really, in your estimation, going to dominate the entire party?
VANCE: I unfortunately fear that's the direction the Democrats are headed. And it is Communism, Laura. This is not raising taxes a little bit, however much we might disagree with that.
It is Communism, the Vice President gravely said. This isn't foreigners eating cats and dogs. This is something that's even more primal.
That's the way his answer began. After attributing a set of positions to the Dems, he turned to the C-bomb again:
VANCE (continuing directly): This is abolishing the police. This is let criminals run amok in your cities. This is flood your country with low wage, third world immigrants. And importantly, it’s confiscating wealth, not because we want to make anybody’s life better but purely out of resentment, out of an attack on the people who have that wealth to begin with.
It really is something we haven’t seen in the United States of America in the history of our politics. And Laura, I think that it actually is a consequence of the fact that the Democrat [sic] Party has become run by the universities and by the professors.
This is not working class, union Democrats. This is not socially conservative people who just want a fair shake at life. This is fundamentally a view that the United States is an evil country that must be dismantled from the ground and then built back up.
That’s Communism at its core, and you see more and more momentum in that direction from the Democrat [sic] Party.
In all honesty, there are some problems with Blue America's stances on several social issues--possibly caused by the way the Blue point of view has come from "the universities and [some of] the professors."
That said:
Friend, how many Democrats have proposed "abolishing the police?" Whatever the number may turn out to be, that’s "Communism at its core!"
Vance was given one more chance to drive the new message home. The closing Q-and-A went like this:
INGRAHAM: Yes or no! Do you think Schumer ultimately survives this surge from the radicals?
VANCE: It depends on how long you're talking about. I think they'll survive for a couple of years, Laura, but in five years, people will look back at Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, as shocking as this might sound, and they are going to say they were the reasonable moderates of this time, and the DSA types, the far left, the Communists, have taken over the party.
The Communists are on the march, the Vice President said. Within five years, they'll be in control of the Democrat [sic] Party.
Communists Communists Commies! This line has sprung up like a fast summer storm. It's a very old theme in American rhetoric. In the main, one nominee in one Gotham race has helped make this messaging fly.
Through her endless array of weird remarks, she's been giving these Redbirds their wings. More on this problem tomorrow.
"We'd say there's no way to know."
ReplyDeleteSomerby says this about whether Democrats will win the House or Senate. This is how silly he sounds when he tries to distance himself from an opinion about who will win. There is an obvious way to know. You wait until the election is over and then look at the results. All will be revealed in time. So why does he says such things? To obfuscate, yes, but in such a stupid way?
The answer that makes sense to me is that he is getting paid by the word. Because such sentences are a big waste of space. It would be nice if there were a way for him to maximize his pay without requiring readers to waste their time. But I can see that his priority must be his own income and not reader needs (unlike writers who write to be understood, to communicate, to inform, to entertain).
The least important part of the article was the forecast about Senate victory. You totally ignored the communism part. And now you made a buffoon of yourself.
DeleteCommunism part addressed elsewhere.
Delete"the GOP's campaign slogan is coming clear"
ReplyDeleteIf the GOP goes with Communism, such a broad and vague condemnation, instead of focusing on specific deficits of individual candidates (running an actual campaign), the result is going to be that no one listens to that slogan and Democrats win because they are unopposed. If the right cannot justify supporting Trump and allowing the government to fall apart, destroying the economy, foreign relations, jobs, plus the ruining of lives, then the Democrats will be essentially running unopposed. That is why there is a blue wave coming. The Republicans are in the position of defending the indefensible. Adopting an empty smear word such as Communism to be their defense is not going to produce results anywhere the left is talking in specifics.
People like Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene are talking about forming third parties because they understand that being a Republican is toxic now that Trump has destroyed the party. Republicans are all going down with Trump if they have done nothing to distance themselves from Trump's behavior. Democrats are the only game in town right now and Republicans are increasingly aware of that.
For example, who is going to vote for Ken Paxton? He is morally tarnished, a crook, and a buffoon who is linked to Trump. Talarico only has to look normal compared to that. When Republicans try to convince voters that Talarico is a communist, who is going to believe them? Not even calling Talarico a "Democratic Socialist" is going to make him seem like the worst alternative compared to Paxton/Trump. And Talarico only needs to be someone NOT Trump in order to win.
Republicans cannot win at any level because they have no defense against the wrongdoing of Trump himself and those around him. The worse the economy gets, the failure to create jobs, more Trump saying housing is a yawn and he doesn't care about affordability, and talk about blowing Iran off the map using nukes, is going to send Republicans into the arms of Democrats, whether Trump lies about communists or not. No one really thinks Democrats are communists (or Democratic Socialists are communists) because even Republicans know Trump is a liar. They just no longer consider him lying on their behalf, especially after the Democrats focus on his grifting some more.
Why is Somerby trying to convince us Democrats that we need to worry about being called communists? Because he wants to undermine the progressives winning primaries all over the nation. Those young new politicians are the future of the Democratic party, they have the ideas and energy to convince voters that they will achieve change and make things different. If they called themselves moderate Democrats, no one would want to vote for them, because they would "more of the same" and too weak to stand up against Trump's cronies in Congress. Somerby can see that we need to embrace these newcomers, not argue over terminology. So we need to be saying that Democratic Socialists are not communists, any more than Trump Republicans are pedophiles. That will get the idea across to Republicans and anyone else tempted to vote Democratic. The rest of the Democrats already know the difference between communist and socialist and aren't going to be tempted to reject (D)s because one of those lying right wingers calls them a communist, especially Trump.
Take a deep breath brother. Hold it. Release slowly. Repeat - a lot. You'll be fine.
DeleteIf you don't care about the outcome of elections, that is on you, not other commenters here.
DeleteEat a bag of dicks.
Delete@5:40 -- this is what it sounds like when someone is unopposed
DeletePhil Weiser (CO state AG) just defeated Michael Bennet because Bennet (incumbent US Senator) is perceived as having been too weak in curtailing Trump. Moderate Democrats are bearing the brunt of voter frustration over Trump's wrongdoing. This blue wave isn't just about getting rid of Trump cronies but also about replacing Democrats who have been unable to respond to Trump with newcomers who seem more aggressive and actively willing to oppose the right. That is why Democratic Socialists have more appeal than long-time incumbents within the Democratic party. They have more fight left in them.
DeleteWhat happened the last time Republicans called Democrats Communists? McCarthy lost his committee and had to admit that he had no shame. "Senator Joseph McCarthy was formally condemned and censured by the U.S. Senate in December 1954 for conduct unbecoming a senator." In Trump's case, the red-baiting can be added to his other articles of impeachment, because he is not a Senator misbehaving but the president and so more is expected of him.
ReplyDeleteWhen you hear someone talking about a DSA type, including Somerby, think "winner" because that is who is going to lead out Democratic party out of its funk.

DeleteHere is a Somerby opinion:
ReplyDelete"In all honesty, there are some problems with Blue America's stances on several social issues--possibly caused by the way the Blue point of view has come from "the universities and [some of] the professors."
Somerby has blamed professors forever. He has attacked the concept of expertise and denigrated the idea of knowledge. He is back to blaming the professors for "woke" (a right wing invention) and back with the negativism about social change. And his fanboys still insist Somerby is liberal. Not with this kind of garbage, he isn't. This is where Vance and Somerby come together.
Being a Democratic Socialist does not make the right wing message about Communism "fly," as Somerby puts it. No one can blame Alvia Chevalier for the right wings use of red-baiting tactics. As Somerby notes, those attacks go back a long way and the current Democratic progressives are not responsible for any right wing name-calling. Somerby refuses to say her name. Why? Is he refusing to advance her candidacy or is he being coy again about who he is blaming for right wing nonsense?
When Democrats express their views, Democrats are not responsible for ANY right wing garbage. The right is capable of saying horrible, extreme things with impunity and they are never held to account for truth of their accusations. Somerby's attempt to pin some right wing extremism about Communism on an innocent candidate in NYC who happens to have been endorsed by Mamdani, doesn't make that candidate responsible for anything said by any Republican, from Trump on down the line to Tarlov, who perhaps isn't as liberal as Somerby paints her.
We have enough to do without Somerby attacking fellow Democrats (if we believe Somerby's claims about being liberal). He needs to cut out this crap, stop imposing his own purity test on Democrats who have won their primaries, especially ones who represent majority minority districts, as Alvia Chevalier just beat her competition and advances to the general election in November. She won it fair and square by impressing the voters in her district. That should be good enough for other Democrats, without Somerby joining the right wingers to call her someone who will revive the communist label by being too progressive for his taste.
We are all in this together against Trump and the extreme right. If we want to win, we need to recognize that and stop attacking our own. It is more likely that Somerby is doing this because he is not one of us, not a lefty, and thus wants to cause Democratic losses in the Fall. That is more consistent with his ongoing behavior. But joining Trump and right by saying that we on the left deserve to be labeled communist because of professors or Democratic Socialists is more helpful to Trump and the right than it is to our side, blue America, as we try to repair our nation and prevent Trump from doing more damage. If Somerby can't say something nice about Democrats running for election, he should keep his fat mouth closed. Of course, he has the right to say what he wants (because free speech), but that doesn't mean we have to believe he is in any way one of us in blue America.

Delete"This is where Vance and Somerby come together."
DeleteThe only place Vance and Somerby come together is in your butt.
Somerby doesn't like butt references.
DeleteSomerby brought up Vance, not me. Vance says:
"It really is something we haven’t seen in the United States of America in the history of our politics. And Laura, I think that it actually is a consequence of the fact that the Democrat [sic] Party has become run by the universities and by the professors.
This is not working class, union Democrats. This is not socially conservative people who just want a fair shake at life. This is fundamentally a view that the United States is an evil country that must be dismantled from the ground and then built back up."
This has been Somerby's own message for years. He thinks the professors are too elitist and that the identity politics came from them and polluted the Democratic party.
The wording of Vance and Somerby is nearly identical and their complaints are the same. If you didn't read Somerby's article, including Vance's quotes, that is your problem Hector.
Is Somerby really arguing that the left should not be so lefty? It sounds like it.
ReplyDeleteAll moderates, by definition, think the extremes are too extreme. This isn't a profound discovery you've made.
DeleteThank you for pointing that out.

DeleteWhat difference does it make whether the left calls Democratic candidates communists or not when the right is going to lie about them no matter what their actual positions on issues or statements?
ReplyDeleteLook at Harris and Biden's border policy and actions. Somerby lied about them and so did the right. It didn't matter that they actually continued a lot of Trump's policies, did a lot of the things the right wanted, and had an effective program in place, plus they produced a bipartisan immigration in Congress that Trump himself torpedoes in order to campaign on immigration. The truth didn't matter to anyone. Biden got the same disparagement as if he had done nothing about the border (as Republicans and Trump lied).
Democratic Socialists need to continue with their own campaigns and not try to soft-peddle their issues, achievements, and future plans. It won't help to rename themselves or to try to escape that communist label, because nothing they do will change what the right (and Somerby) says about them. The more they are authentic to their own beliefs, the better they will do.
Trump WILL keep on lying. That is what he does, what Republicans do. It doesn't depend on anything we on the left say or do. There is no point in wasting energy on such attacks.
The term communist means something different to right wingers than it does to us on the left, just as the word globalist does.
ReplyDeleteThe right is peddling a conspiracy theory when it calls anyone on the left communist. Democracy Docket says:
"Republicans are crashing out over the Supreme Court’s ruling on birthright citizenship.
They’ve called the decision an “abomination” that legalizes “baby factories.” They’ve alleged children who receive birthright citizenship are “being groomed by communists and globalists” and are “actively colonizing our country.” And they’ve even lambasted Justice Amy Coney Barrett as “Amy Commie Barrett.”
Note the use of the term "grooming," which evokes pedophiles. This is White Supremacist Nazi rhetoric about "colonization" of our country by foreigners. The term globalist is a dog whistle referring to international plots by Jewish elites.
If any of this is real, it refers to Jeffrey Epstein, Trump, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, not the Democratic Socialists.
Trying to respond to these nutcases as if their words had definitions is a mistake. We need to keep fighting them and exposing their wrongdoing, and the elections will take care of themselves.
Simple really. Walz and Harris were doing fine before the consultants told Walz to quit reminding everyone just how fucking weird Repukes are. Oh my God, a tranny won a HS sporting event. Everyone strike out on cue. Who the fuck really cares that much? Weirdos
DeleteJonathan Chait is attacking Chevalier in order to attack the Democratic Socialist organization. He has written a hit piece on her for The Atlantic. I would read it with some caution, keeping in mind that he is no friend to progressives in general:
ReplyDelete"Jonathan Chait is a political writer whose political leanings are broadly categorized as mainstream, "old-school" liberalism and center-left. While his views on domestic economic policy and opposition to conservative candidates place him firmly on the political left, his vocal criticism of far-left progressive dogma, "cancel culture," and identity politics has made him a frequent target of progressive backlash." [AI]
He sounds a bit like Somerby. But where did these guys all get their marching orders on attacking Avila Chevalier? The piling on after her win just yesterday seems a bit much and likely to be coming from somewhere coordinated.
It was bad enough when Bernie kept trying to sabotage Hillary and his bros hated Democrats to the point of hacking DNC computers. If we are to make use of the opportunity the right is handing us, we need to stop fighting each other. That means treating people with different opinions about Israel with respect and not smearing our own candidates.
JD Vance is not a hillbilly. He grew up in a middle class home in Middletown, Ohio, a rustbelt manufacturing town. He spent occasional summers in KY with his grandparents. Some of his book is fictional, leading to confusion about his actual past. He was in the Marine Corp for 4 years, attended Ohio State and then Yale law school. Then he clerked for John Cornyn, met Peter Thiel and went to work for his technology investment firm. None of that screams "hillbilly". Somerby no doubt uses the term from the title of Vance's book, perhaps ironically. Vance changed his name four times, converted to Catholicism and seems to have identity issues.
