Supplemental: The Iowa polls and the gender wage gap!

FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2015

We’ll call it a tale of two problems
: As we fight a mild case of the labyrinthitis, we’ll call it a tale of two problems.

Let’s start with those latest Iowa polls and the press corps’ attempt to report them. But first, a quick bit of background:

The cable “news” channels are devoting themselves to all-candidates-all-the-time. Shark attacks can be forgotten in a delicious summer like this.

If it isn’t Trump/Biden, it just isn’t news! Meanwhile, they’re obsessing about the latest polls. They can’t get enough of new polling!

Can we talk? Obsessing on the polls in August is like measuring the height and weight of your two-year-old son in an attempt to determine if he will ever become an NFL lineman.

Except in the most general sense, current polls have very little predictive value. Obsessing on day-to-day changes at this time, based on results from single polls, is the work of our culture’s glorious fools—our corporate “news” purveyors.

That said, they love to talk about personalities—and they love the thrill of the horse race!Of course, a real horse race lasts roughly two minutes. As a boon to the industry, they stretch their quadrennial horse race out, making it last two years.

At this point, the latest poll is basically useless. Making matters even worse, consider the way our “journalists” sometimes report these polls!

We were struck by Politico’s hapless reports on the latest Iowa polls. The reports were written by a young person who’s just one year out of college.

At this high-profile site, her competence was hard to discern—and her reports were weirdly unbalanced. Did an editor examine her work? Luckily for him or her, he or she went unnamed.

What was wrong with Politico’s reporting? In its report on the new Democratic poll from Iowa, Politico stressed a debunking fact, starting right in its headline:

“Poll: Hillary Clinton leads in Iowa, but majority not firmly decided”

Clinton is way ahead in this new Iowa poll, which was conducted by CNN/ORC. She leads Bernie Sanders, 50-31, even with Joe Biden mysteriously thrown in the mix.

(At present, he isn’t a candidate.)

Clinton’s ahead by 19 points in this poll—but Politico stressed a debunking fact: 54 percent of respondents said they haven’t firmly decided! This debunking fact appeared in Collins’ second paragraph, then jumped to Politico’s headline.

Clinton’s large lead was undermined from the headline on down. But uh-oh! In their report on the new Republican poll, Collins and Politico played things different.

In the new Iowa poll, Trump is ahead by only eight points—but Collins and Politico stressed the gigantic size of his lead. Meanwhile, 66 percent of Republican voters said they haven’t firmly decided. This larger group of not-fully-decideds was played down in Politico’s report.

Given the companion report about the Democratic poll, what you see below is just horrible work. Exciting headline included:
COLLINS (8/12/15): Donald Trump dominates Iowa in CNN poll

Donald Trump has seized a commanding lead in Iowa, drawing nearly double the support of his closest competitor,
in a new poll by CNN and ORC that shows the real estate mogul’s staying power as controversy swirls around his campaign.

The poll, which was conducted after last Thursday’s debate and as Trump hurled nasty insults about Fox News host Megyn Kelly, showed Trump leading the Republican field with 22 percent among Iowa caucus-goers.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson came in second with 14 percent, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who until recently was leading polls in Iowa, came in at 9 percent.
Is 22 percent “nearly double” 14 percent? It can be if you’re excited!

Meanwhile, note the way Collins and Politico characterize the size of Trump’s lead. With an eight-point lead, he “dominates Iowa!” His lead in the state is “commanding.”

Clinton’s 19-point lead is undermined by the fact that many Dems are undecided. The fact that substantially more Republicans are undecided wasn’t allowed to sully our sense of Trump’s commanding lead.

Politico is a high-profile site. This work was done by a kid reporter who’s barely out of college. If an older editor was part of the mix, he or she ought to retire.

Obsessing on these polls at this time is silly, unhelpful—absurd. It’s a mark of the low IQ which defines our cable “news” business.

At Politico, they found a way to make things worse! An 8-point lead is “commanding,” they said.

A 19-point lead is less.

  1. "Just before Donald Trump launched his bid for the Oval Office, he got on the phone with a man who knows plenty about the job — former President Bill Clinton.

The Republican real estate mogul shared a private phone conversation with Clinton — husband of the 2016 Democratic front-runner — in late May, and went on to kick off his campaign in mid-June, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The report, citing four Trump allies and a Clinton associate, said the former President urged Trump to take on a larger role in the Republican Party and offered his views on politics."

Hello, i just want to share my experience and testimony here.. i was married for 4 years to my husband and all of a sudden another woman came into the picture, he started hailing me and he was abusive but i still loved him with all my heart and wanted him at all cost… then he filed for divorce, my whole life was turning apart and i didn't know what to do; he moved out of the house and abandoned the kids.. So a friend of mine told me about trying spiritual means to get my husband back and introduced me to a spell caster… i decided to try it reluctantly although i didn't believe in all those things… then when this great man Dr Eboehi did the special prayers and spell, after 2days, my husband came back and was pleading he had realized his mistakes.. i just couldn't believe it.. anyways we are back together now and we are happy.. "In 2009, the Clinton Foundation spent $126 million on pharmaceutical and care partner expenses. By 2011, those activities were virtually non-existent. The group spent nothing on pharmaceutical expenses and only $1.2 million on care partner expenses. In 2012 and 2013, the Clinton Foundation spent $0. In just a few short years, the Clinton’s primary philanthropic project transitioned from a massive player in global pharmaceutical distribution to a bloated travel agency and conference organizing business that just happened to be tax-exempt."

Foreign nations are padding the Clinton Foundation and Willie's personal bank account while HRC was head of Foggy Bottom because they were overcome with altruism.

"Where he once had drawn $150,000 for a typical address in the years following his presidency, Clinton saw a succession of staggering paydays for speeches in 2010 and 2011, including $500,000 paid by a Russian investment bank and $750,000 to address a telecom conference in China."

You are delusional. Trump's defection from the Democratic Party is three years old. HRC and Willie were hanging out with a fellow Democrat, not a Republican.

And that the husband of the wife who is running for POTUS encourages Trump to run against her is your idea of "connecting with those of different views" is hysterical.

Why not bypass the Clinton Foundation altogether and contribute directly to the numerous charities that actually spend the money on the charity? The only reason foreign entities land on the Clinton Foundation is they know their millions will ensure favorable influence as wielded by the U.S. Secretary of State and possible next POTUS.

    24. No, the "57 states" remark wasn't meant as a joke. Based on the clip, it was clearly an error, but not of the sort that suggests Obama thought there were 57 states. What he said is that he'd already visited 57 states, with one left to go, not including Hawaii and Alaska. Adding those three, the total would be 60. It's pretty clear that he meant to say 47 instead of 57. To anyone who hasn't made this sort of mental subtraction error, I congratulate you for being perfect. I have plenty of beefs with Obama's performance as president, but to suggest that this remark proves that he's ignorant of elementary school level US history is absurd.

What is the margin of error of selecting one publication as a representation of the entire press corps? "Can we talk? Obsessing on the polls in August is like measuring the height and weight of your two-year-old son in an attempt to determine if he will ever become an NFL lineman.

Except in the most general sense, current polls have very little predictive value."

From some of those pointy headed professor types a few years back:

"The flurry of candidate announcements in an open race has spurred media attention to the 2008 presidential contest even earlier in the electoral cycle than usual. But followers of early poll readings on the relative viability of declared candidates should bear in mind some caveats. Early frontrunners for the Republican nomination in most of the past seven open contests have gone on to win the nomination, but this year there is not one but two GOP frontrunners. On the Democratic side, even when there is a clear frontrunner as there is this year with Sen. Hillary Clinton, the early polls have been less reliable in predicting who will capture the nomination."

    http://www.pewresearch.org/2007/02/14/how-reliable-are-the-early-presidential-polls/

Those words were co-authored by Professor Scott Keeter, PhD who was, and still is, Director of Survey Research at Pew Research Center. We know Bob Somerby, BA has a low opnion of professors and Pew. Blogger Somerby has never, to our knowledge, designed, implemented, or analyzed a piece of survey research in his life. He has never, to our knowledge, worked in a professional capacity in a political campaign, or as a reporter.

Barack Obama of Illinois."

CNN Eight Years Ago (Very Excited, we might doubly add)

      http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/09/2008.dems.poll/index.html

See how smart our Bob was and is. Who could have seen Hilalry about to crater? But Wait! There was more! That was national polling. In Iowa, those obsesssing over early polls might have seen an NFL monster lineman brewing. A few paragraphs later in that same CNN article:

"A Washington Post/ABC News poll of Iowa voters released on August 3 had Clinton, Obama and Edwards in a virtual tie in that key early caucus state. Obama led with 27 percent, while Clinton and Edwards both had 26 percent."

Oh yes, and mm sees the writer in Poltico as a male. Described "him" that way three times in one sentence. Did your Howling savant mislead poor whiny mm?

"We were struck by Politico’s hapless reports on the latest Iowa polls. The reports were written by a young person who’s just one year out of college.

    1. I never heard you mention that Digby used the line to describe a police office testifying as the defendant in a manslaughter trial after he shot an unarmed black man whose sole offense was that he was a car accident victim seeking help in a white North Carolian neighborhood.

  14. “They're trying to kill me," Yossarian told him calmly.
No one's trying to kill you," Clevinger cried.
Then why are they shooting at me?" Yossarian asked.
They're shooting at everyone," Clevinger answered. "They're trying to kill everyone."
“And what difference does that make?”

  15. Fulfill your deepest heart desires!!! (eboehispellcaster@yahoo.com)

In-case anyone of you is passing through any relationship problem i would advise you to email this Great Man via: eboehispellcaster@yahoo.com or call (208) 627-4749 and live a better life. thanks Sylvia Martin from Texas

  16. Getting my husband back with the help of professional love spell .Dr Brave ??

I'm very excited sharing this amazing testimony about how i save my marriage and get my husband back today, My name is Becky Miller , I live in Los Angeles, California, I'm happily married to a lovely and caring husband ,with three kids. A very big problem occurred in my family seven months ago, between me and my husband .so terrible that he took the case to court for a divorce.he said that he never wanted to stay with me again, and that he didn't love me anymore. So he packed out of the house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get him back, after much begging, but all to no avail.and he confirmed it that he has made his decision, and he never wanted to see me again. So on one evening,as i was coming back from work,i met an old friend of mine who asked of my husband .So i explained every thing to him,so he told me that the only way i can get my husband back,is to visit a spell caster, because it has really worked for him too.So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow his advice. Then he gave me the email address of the spell caster whom he visited.{bravespellcaster@gmail.com}. So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address he gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my husband back the next day. What an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning, So surprisingly, my husband who didn't call me for the past seven 9 months, gave me a call to inform me that he was coming back.So Amazing!! So that was how he came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and he apologized for his mistake, and for the pain he caused me and my children. Then from that day,our relationship was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster. So, i will advice you out there to kindly visit the same website { http://lovespelldrbrave.weebly.com/. } if you have any problem contact Dr Brave ,{ bravespellcaster@gmail.com }, thanks you Dr Brave, i will always be testifying about your good work.
