HOW WE GOT HERE, CONTINUED: Inventing a bigger liar than Trump!

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2017

Part 1—The fruit of our own elites:
Will we liberals ever confront the various roles we ourselves played in sending Donald J. Trump to the White House?

Almost surely, we won't. Yesterday, in the New York Times, Nicholas Kristof wrote the next chapter in our alternative undertaking, in which 1) we blame everything on The Others, and in which 2) we've finally decided to fight and fight hard, now that it's too late.

Exactly one day after Trump was sworn in, we staged our march on Washington! Yesterday, Kristof wrote the next chapter in this morally pleasing but embarrassing tale.

Pitiful headline included! Here's what our liberal elites are like:
KRISTOF (2/19/17): How Can We Get Rid of Trump?

We’re just a month into the Trump presidency, and already so many are wondering: How can we end it?

One poll from Public Policy Polling found that as many Americans—46 percent—favor impeachment of President Trump as oppose it. Ladbrokes, the betting website, offers even odds that Trump will resign or leave office through impeachment before his term ends.

Sky Bet, another site, is taking wagers on whether Trump will be out of office by July.
"How Can We Get Rid of Trump!" There's only one word for that:

Sad.

As he continued, Kristof examined the various ways Donald J. Trump could be removed from office now that our team is upset. "Let’s investigate." he thoughtfully wrote. "Is there any way out?"

At the end of his piece, Kristof reported his fearless conclusion. Our analysts tore their hair as they surveyed his fatuous work.

What word comes after "sad?" one of the youngsters asked:
KRISTOF: If I were betting, I’d say we’re stuck with Trump for four years. But as Sabato says: “Lots of things about Donald Trump’s election and early presidency have been shocking. Why should it stop now?”

And what does it say about a presidency that, just one month into it, we’re already discussing whether it can be ended early?
What does it say about Trump's presidency that we're having this discussion? In our view, we liberals should ask a more pertinent question:

What does it say about Us?

We liberals! With spectacular ineptitude, we showed up at the scene of the fire just in time to be too late to put it out. Yesterday, Kristof's column continued this embarrassing show, which just keeps rolling along.

In this morning's Washington Post, Kavin and Costa present the latest report about our new liberal activism. The scribes report from a New Jersey town hall, where angry liberals hectored a new Democratic House member over his refusal to fight hard enough in the crucial past several weeks.

As quoted, several of these fiery activists described their own absence from the scene over the past many years. To cite one example, a retired surgeon who carried "an 8-by-10-inch sign reading 'Resist' said he was politically active in the 1970s but did not feel the need to become so again until the Women’s March."

After an absence of forty years, the surgeon had arrived on the scene again. He had arrived just in time to be dangerously too late.

In fairness, it isn't the fault of the rank and file that we helped send Trump to the White House. To a massively greater extent, it's the fault of our liberal leadership groups, whose pitiful conduct we will sample during the course of the week.

Our cable hosts, our star liberal columnists? Our legions of silent and hapless professors? Our black assistant professors?

Where do we start with a gong-show like this? The choices are many, and hard.

That said, how absurd is the situation our leadership groups helped create? Once again, let's consider one of the ways Candidate Trump managed to draw an inside straight and find his way to the White House.

We turn to this news report from last Thursday's New York Times. In her report, Katie Rogers spoke with Trump voters who have tweeted regret for their votes.

Debbie Nelson is one such voter. What happened isn't Nelson's fault, but we'll highlight one key part of what she said:
ROGERS (2/17/17): Debbie Nelson, a secretary who lives in Orland Park, Ill., and works in downtown Chicago, said in an interview that she never liked Mr. Trump, but ended up voting for him because she was worried jobs like hers were being outsourced. She also didn't trust Mrs. Clinton.

Ms. Nelson reluctantly voted for Mr. Trump—''because of Hillary's lies''—but grew disillusioned with Mr. Trump's behavior, which she thought would change after the election. On Feb. 6, she added her message for the president to the fray: ''We need a mature adult as president. Can I take my vote back?'' (For Ms. Nelson, the tipping point was seeing Mr. Trump dismiss news and negative polls as fake that day.)

Mr. Trump entered the White House with a historically low approval rating, but Ms. Nelson is among the voters who approve of his overall policies, especially when it comes to immigration. ''I do want better security and I don't think there is anything wrong with that,'' she said.

But she was frustrated with the slapdash nature of Mr. Trump's executive order to restrict refugees and people from several primarily Muslim countries.
Just for the record, it is too late for Nelson to take back her vote. That said, as we did last week with another voter, we note a key part of her thinking last fall:

Debbie Nelson voted for Trump because of Clinton's lies!

At least in theory, it's very, very, very hard to lose an election this way. It's hard to lose to a constant, disordered dissembler like Trump because, in the minds of many voters, your candidate was the one who spilled with troubling lies.

That said, this is one of the obvious ways we managed to lose to Candidate Trump. We ran against the greatest dissembler in American political history—and somehow, our candidate was widely perceived as the one with the troubling lies!

It's actually hard to lose that way; not every group could have done it! But over here in our liberal tents, our leadership groups have stumbled, bumbled and clowned for decades, bringing this gong-show to pass!

Yesterday, Kristof flashed a shiny object. Tomorrow, we'll start to examine the ongoing, world-class gong-show performance of our liberal leadership groups.

Tomorrow: Where to begin?

  2. I really love this blog. I think Bob is one of the most original and fearless writers on the Internet. He's been right about some very important matters. And I even appreciate that he styles his writing as "Socratic," which makes us do the work of thinking things through.

But on today's topic I'd like to hear something more straightforward, because the problem isn't just the mainstream press or liberals in general. The problem really is that the press and liberals haven't devised a way to respond to a decades-long, well-funded and extremely cunning propaganda campaign by the right.

That propaganda campaign runs on multiple media outlets and countless blogs repeating the same message over-and-over, with facts that are sometimes false, but also sometimes true but misleading or otherwise chosen selectively, to shade the argument in a manner that is very difficult to oppose without enormous effort.

I think that Bob would begin his response by stating that, for starters, we need a press corps that is diligent and meticulous with the facts, because failure to report in that manner leads to conservatives devaluing the media, thereby giving everyone permission to disregard whatever they don't like to hear.

I agree that's a start, but it's only a start. I don't know the answer, but I'm trying to figure out how to persuade people, rather than simply declaring them as beyond reach (even though some, maybe many, of them may in fact be beyond reach).

  3. To his credit, Somerby addressed the swiftboating of Clinton by the press, by Sanders, and by Trump. Then Clinton was sandbagged by the FBI and Wikileaks. Those are not normal campaign events and liberals cannot be blamed for what happened then. Individuals who could have intervened but didn't, such as Obama, may be fairly blamed. But individuals and the liberal press cannot. They tried but were overwhelmed by events.

Those of us who supported Clinton tried very hard to get her elected. We help plenty of rallies before the election, just as Trump did. We went door to door, we talked to friends, we canvassed our hearts out. What did Somerby do? What did Drum do? What did Marshall do? What did Huffington Post do? Not much, in my opinion. But those of us who DID the work don't deserve Somerby's finger pointing.

It is no coincidence that the Women's March on Washington consisted largely of disappointed women who worked very hard to get Hillary elected. There is nothing funny about their disappointment.

  4. Why does Somerby keep pretending that Clinton lost because there were too many people voting for Trump? She lost because liberals in three states didn't vote. That IS a Democratic party problem, but it traces back to the in-fighting in the party, not to the way we despise Trump voters or how the media portrayed Clinton to Republicans. Bernie Bros didn't vote. The people who went for Stein would have put her over the top in the Electoral College. Democrats failed Clinton.

I've seen suggestions that both Bernie and Stein were funded by Russian campaign contributions, that the in-fighting was encouraged by anti-Clinton operatives (witness the nature of the Wikileaks emails leaked). The natural tendency of liberals to engage in this kind of thing was encouraged by those who wanted to torpedo Clinton and we played into their hands.

I don't think the media was important in that process, but Somerby doesn't seem inclined to analyze other aspects of elections and politics.

And when asked about Russian contributions to his campaign, Bernie said "So what?"

  5. Trump is honest. Trump is negligent in determining a truth before he makes a statement but he believes what he says is true based on the information he has seen. Trump was perceived as transparent and less likely to formulate a lie than Clinton because we watched him step in it time after time by saying something most politicians would have thought but hidden. Trump is not colluding with "Russians" and the leap from Russians as a source for Wikileaks of Clinton campaign emails to collusion between Trump and "the Russians" is one of the craziest conspiracy theories in the history of politics. It's hard to believe anyone is really buying into the innuendo that reaches new heights of comedic absurdity every day, instead of tactically promoting a known fairy tale.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That "leap" in logic is not based solely on the one item that you mention.

    2. This is a liberal blog and conservative trolls are annoying here because they want to debate things that are obvious and waste everyone's time.

The FBI is buying into those "crazy" conspiracy theories because they have evidence of the hacking, communications, and money transfers.

People may have thought Trump was "honest" despite his lying but being sincerely wrong is not a qualification for president. Somerby never considers whether the reasons given by people for their Trump support are the actual ones motivating their votes.

For example, it makes no sense that anyone would consider Trump "transparent" when he fails to release his taxes. Trump voters obviously don't care about the same things as Democrats when making their decision.

The kinds of lies Clinton was accused of seem self-serving and are complicated, both to explain and to dispute, concerning the foundation or her email server. Trump keeps it simple and never confuses his supporters.

Because Trump never gives details, it is harder to play gotcha with him. When he is flat out caught in a lie, he calls the press enemies and doubles down on the lie, making himself seem like he is being unfairly attacked. He never engages the substance of any accusations. None of that makes him honest or truthful. Some people can stomach what he did and others cannot.

      Delete
    3. The FBI announced it was still investigating Hillary just before the election. A lack of skepticism of what advisors put in front of him isn't the best qualification for a president but it falls short of dishonesty. There are thousands of reasons why Trump wouldn't want to release his taxes but no reasons to read any particular possibility into his preference. "Russia is a ruse" and "I'm not going to tell you what I'm going to do" about an international controversy is engagement on the substance at the level he chooses to engage, a choice he defends logically. Engaging on every single conspiracy theory would be a waste of time.

      Delete
    4. No one "wants" to release their taxes. They do it out of respect for the American people.

Trump cannot talk details because he doesn't understand complex issues, doesn't pay attention to the details of programs. He is ignorant, unprepared.

It is embarrassing watching the press pin him down on this stuff. He squirms and tries to float BS and turns red in the face. I would feel sorry for him if he weren't such a liability to our country.

  6. Somerby says: "we note a key part of her thinking last fall: Debbie Nelson voted for Trump because of Clinton's lies!"

Actually, I don't think that was key. She voted for Trump because he promised more security from those awful immigrants.

People needed a justification for not voting for Hillary. A justification is not a reason. Her supposed lying was an excuse. People knew they shouldn't vote for Trump because he was an awful guy, but Hillary's supposed lying gave them an excuse to follow their id.

Somerby blames liberals for their name-calling but Trump's supporters indulged all of their name calling and baser instincts vicariously through Trump's behavior and put the guy in office. They justified that by calling Hillary a liar.

    1. Concern about immigration and its effect on crime, jobs and the economy, and concern about the possibility that the US would face continued and escalating Islamic terrorism are not baser instincts, they are reasons for electing a president who notices these issues instead of one who tries to downplay or whitewash the troubling aspects of them. Self-defense is a justification and a reason. A failure to appreciate these potential problems is less reasoned. "Indulged name calling"? Hillary's name calling cost her the election because people were sick of being called phobes and ists because of their valid concerns. It was a habit the mainstream Democrats adopted from the crazy campus victim culture.

    2. Too bad all those people who are so concerned about crime and immigration, jobs and the economy, don't also know the stats about these important issues. If they did, they would have recognized that Clinton's plans were more realistic and likely to accomplish those goals than Trump's.

Throughout the campaign, Trump kept advocating the same policies as Obama had already implemented and his supporters never realized it in their ignorance.

      Fear is not reasoned.

Last week the forces fighting ISIS in Mosul retook the Eastern part of the city. Trump said nothing about that important victory. Why? He doesn't want people to know ISIS is being defeated. He wants them to stay scared so he can manipulate them and continue his attack on immigrants.

      Delete
    3. You are right that some of Obama's policies did not match the campaign rhetoric around the immigration and Islamic terrorism issue, and you took the opportunity to slam voters who didn't know it as "ignorant." People work very hard and don't have much time to verify everything they hear, and what they didn't hear is Obama or Clinton discussing extreme vetting or borders, but signaling an intent to ignore those issues. "We already have extreme vetting" isn't going to cut it when it's known there are problems that need addressing, and it was Trump who actually pointed out Obama's deportation rates. Hillary and Obama did not because they preferred to pander. Perhaps Trump would not agree that ISIS is "being defeated" because that assessment is not a verifiable fact until they are defeated. Trump's approach isn't to declare a victory in a process as "being defeated" because, yes, he wants people to remain vigilant so he can continue his attack on Islamic terrorism.

This is Obama on immigration. He was right and if you were reading a transcript you would think it was Trump speaking. If he claimed to evolve from this position, he evolved in the wrong direction. You might prefer that a candidate not bring up drugs and rape but if acknowledging that ugly truth is what it took to get the public behind deporting violent felons and getting a handle on the drug disaster, so be it.

    4. All or nothing -- no progress can be celebrated until there is complete victory. Lame response.

The problem with Trump's response on immigration is that he cannot point to any problem with it -- there have been no terror incidents committed by immigrants. The ones by people with foreign sounding names or different cultural backgrounds were all done by citizens born and raised in the US. How does cracking down on immigrants prevent that?

Why won't Trump explain his plan for preventing shootings by people like Dylann Roof?

We have always deported violent felons. Who wouldn't? That is a non-issue. It is only the gullibility of Trump's audience that permits him to lie and say there is no vetting taking place. And what a humongous lie that one is! You should be ashamed to be arguing this.

      Delete
    5. No one claimed there is "no vetting." The public is concerned about cooperation with groups like ISIS by radicalized refugees and immigrants, and insufficient means available to determine their intentions and backgrounds.

"The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest used publicly available information and identified at least 16 individuals from these seven nations that from March 2014 to June 2016 were implicated in terrorism. Eight of these are terrorists convicted for crimes mainly related to giving material support or attempting to give material support to ISIS.

For example, Abdinassir Mohamud Ibrahim, a Somali refugee, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2015 for conspiring to provide material support to the Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Omar Faraj Saeed Al Harden, an Iraqi refugee who became a permanent legal resident, pled guilty in 2016 to providing material support to ISIS.

Since June 2016, men from these seven countries temporarily banned by Trump have continued to cause terror. At least one individual was indicted for terrorism charges from a country temporarily banned from entering the U.S.

There have also been two perpetrators of stabbings that left a total 21 individuals injured. These stabbings were both committed by Somalian refugees, one was at a mall in St. Cloud, Minn., the other was at Ohio State University."

Is Kristoff wrong to regard Trump's Presidency as a unprecedented catastrophe, with all decent Americans regarding his removal from office as job one wrong? It seems to be some sort outrage to Bob that nominally wise Americans want a racist lunatic out of his job as leader of the free world.

I don't blame Clinton or liberals for not expecting: (1) that the FBI would release statements to tip the election, (2) Wikileaks would hack and reveal private campaign emails, (3) one candidate would lie shamelessly without the media calling him on it, (4) that a foreign country would fund opposition. All of this is cheating.

I wouldn't want my candidate to engage in the same kind of behavior and we do not have methods in place to prevent such cheating, so what exactly was anyone supposed to do about it?

Now Somerby wants to say that it was identity politics that lost the election, as if the left's commitment to civil rights should be abandoned because only a racist seems to attract certain kinds of voters. I am disappointed in Somerby nearly as much as I am disappointed in the electorate.

  12. Here is an example of those reasoned people who think security is important:

"During the speech, she'd stood among the Trump supporters who watched on the big screen and listened through the loudspeaker. After, she'd moved together with the bloc of protesters who converged to greet the Trump supporters leaving the speech. Her head covering was noticeable, even in the crowd.

Later that night, she texted me a video of people walking in parallel to her, yelling, just a few blocks away outside Keiser University. She said they'd followed her from the rally, and their clothes and conversation suggest as much. The people looked familiar, in the same way that a composite does, in that way that all white people yelling racist things have a sneer that verges on archetype.

"Leave," a woman shouted on the video, flipping her off. "You don't like America, get the fuck out ... You are a disgrace to America," the man walking next to her said.

They mocked her camera. "You can jack off to that later, the man drawled. "I've got a big ol' white American redneck dick."

The woman in the hijab told him where to stick it.

"I can put it up your little tight ass," he countered, "and I won't be hittin' that clit, 'cause it already got removed.""

Most would say the woman who got her feelings hurt in your example was luckier than these officers. We can do this all day.

"DALLAS — The heavily armed sniper who gunned down police officers in downtown Dallas, leaving five of them dead, specifically set out to kill as many white officers as he could, officials said Friday. He was a military veteran who had served in Afghanistan, and he kept an arsenal in his home that included bomb-making materials.

The shooting was the kind of retaliatory violence that people have feared through two years of protests around the country against deaths in police custody, forcing yet another wrenching shift in debates over race and criminal justice that had already deeply divided the nation."

    5. 5:14 PM knows about the NRA, but for some reason wants to lay the blame on liberals and black people who see the obvious inequality in or justice system. I wonder why?
BTW, that last question is "fake news".

  18. Hey guys,
I’m extremely happy that my broken Marriage has been restored and my husband is back after a breakup, After 12 years of marriege, i and my husband has been into one quarrel or the other until he finally left me and moved to Texas to be with another woman. i felt my life was over and my kids thought they would never see their father again. i tried to be strong just for the kids but i could not control the pains that torments my heart, my heart was filled with sorrows and pains because i was really in love with my husband. Every day and night i think of him and always wish he would come back to me, I was really upset and i needed help, so i searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Unity can help get ex back fast. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and i did it then he did a (Love spell) for me. 28 hours later, my husband really called me and told me that he miss me and the kids so much, So Amazing!! So that was how he came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and he apologized for his mistake, and for the pain he caused me and the kids.
