Al Capone meets General Sessions!

THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2017

Leahy's pathetic play:
Way back when, the Chicago police couldn't get Al Capone for his actual crimes, including the Saint Valentine's Day massacre.

So the feds nailed him on a tax evasion rap! To this day, it's a famous play.

In our view, the modern-day Democratic Party is involved in similar conduct. We've increasingly shown that we can't win elections or convince the public concerning our basic beliefs. So we pray instead for the chance to get our rivals locked up.

We pray for scandal, for more Watergates, for Republicans to be caught in sex scandals involving congressional pages,as in the glorious year 2006. Given the gerontocracy running the party, it's our only way.

This produced an embarrassing moment on CNN today. The party is looking for a way to create a Trump scandal. Spirits soared when the story broke about Jeff Sessions last night.

Yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay! This new report in the Washington Post gave Democrats a chance to say that Sessions lied in the course of his confirmation hearing. Yay yay yay yay yay yay yay! Perhaps we can get him on that!

Is it true? Did Sessions lie in his confirmation hearing?

It's certainly possible—but then again, everything is. In the case of a verbal exchange with Al Franken, we'd say the claim is currently pretty slender. (Your lizard brain will tell you different. Your lizard is constantly wrong.)

In the case of a later, written exchange with Leahy, there's no current claim at all.

What the heck did Leahy ask Sessions? Below, you see the text of the written question from Leahy, along with Sessions' one-word written reply:
LEAHY: Several of the President-elect’s nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties. Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?

SESSIONS: No.
As you and every sane person can see, Sessions was specifically asked if he had spoken to any Russkies "about the 2016 election." In his written reply, he said that he had not.

Like almost everyone else on the planet, we have no way of knowing whether that statement is accurate. But at present, there is zero evidence supporting the claim that Sessions' statement was false.

In September 2016, Sessions had a private meeting in his office with the Russian ambassador. Earlier, at the Republican Convention, Sessions had briefly spoken to the Russian ambassador after giving a speech at an event where something like twenty other ambassadors were present.

Did they speak about the election? Everything's possible, but at present, there's zero evidence that they did. At present, there is zero evidence that Sessions' reply to Leahy was false.

Unless you speak to the doddering Leahy! This morning, we caught his embarrassing effort on CNN, near the end of the 10 o'clock hour.

Leahy spoke with CNN co-hosts John Berman and Poppy Harlow. Here's what happened when the bumbling gerontocrat pretended to discuss the written question he submitted to Sessions:
LEAHY (3/2/17): I asked a very, very specific question. I think, you know, you've— You have had it—

HARLOW: Yes, we have it. We'll pull it up.

LEAHY: And—but what I said in it, I said, asking him about it, remember, now, these answers are under oath, under oath, and I said, "Did you have any contact, either before or after Election Day?" I thought my question was very clear. His answer is very clear. He said "No." Well, that's not what happened. And I think this raises questions.
He thought his question was very clear! For the full transcript, click here.

Uh-oh! You'll note that Leahy offered an "edited" version of what he had actually asked. To his credit, Berman called him on it—and Leahy embarrassed himself further:
BERMAN (continuing directly): You asked him— Senator, just to be clear, you asked him if he had contact before or after the election "about the 2016 election." To that he answered "no." So does that give him wiggle room because he could say he met—

LEAHY: No.

BERMAN: OK, why?

LEAHY: It doesn't because one of those was at the Republican National Convention when he, when he met with the Russians. Gosh, what did they talk about? "Hey, gee, the food is really great here?" Come on. We're all grown-ups here. "Well, Senator—"
Are we really "all grown-ups here?" Or are some of our hapless leaders really gerontocrats?

To his credit, Berman reminded Leahy of what he had actually asked. We'd only criticize Berman for using the suggestive term, "wiggle room," as he discussed a reply by Sessions which may well be perfectly accurate.

At that point, Leahy began clowning about what Sessions surely must have said during that brief discussion at the Republican Convention. Watching live, we were surprised, but not surprised, by Leahy's disingenuous presentation. Once again, to their credit, the CNN pair pushed back:
BERMAN (continuing directly): Well, there are ambassadors—ambassadors always go to conventions, senator.

HARLOW: And this was a big gathering. Now, because they met on the grounds, it was a Heritage Foundation event at the convention, doesn't necessarily mean they talked about it.
We'd say that Leahy embarrassed himself. We'd also say that this recalls the chase after Al Capone.

Why do we speak of "gerontocrats?" A few weeks ago, we had the misfortune of seeing the Democratic House leadership, three million strong, stumble through a horrible press event at which Reps. Cummings and Pelosi recited a fake tweet which they mistakenly thought had come from Michael Flynn.

(Note: The fake tweet had appeared beneath this bold header: "Not Michael Flynn." Even that hint wasn't enough for the party's top sleuths. For details, just click here.)

Cummings is no gerontocrat; others that day plainly were. It was a horrible press event, capped by Pelosi's unwatchable explanation of what the word "scapegoat" originally meant, long ago, on some unnamed Greek isle.

It was an unwatchable presser. Even on a dull news day, the cables quickly fled. Conservatives have heard about the way our team swallowed the "Not Michael Flynn" fake tweet. Over Here in our liberal tents, we have of course been shielded from such knowledge.

This morning, we saw another senator-for-life embarrass himself on CNN. They don't know how to win elections or debates. They're praying for scandal instead.

That's exactly the problem: Later in the CNN session, Leahy was asked if he thought that Sessions had lied to Al Franken during his hearing.

At present, we'd say the complaint is extremely thin. But so what? Here's what Leahy said:

"You know, I was a prosecutor. I would not have accepted that answer."

That's exactly the problem, we flawlessly thought. The other problem lies in the fact that the nation's more liberal party lies in the hands of a gang of increasingly hapless gerontocrats.

They haven't won a debate for years. They're forced to pray for sex with pages or some other form of disgrace.

  1. Increasingly, I am agreeing with those who say Somerby is not a liberal. Today he says this:

"In our view, the modern-day Democratic Party is involved in similar conduct. We've increasingly shown that we can't win elections or convince the public concerning our basic beliefs. So we pray instead for the chance to get our rivals locked up."

First, we won the election in terms of popular vote. Unprecedented interference in the election process sabotaged our candidate -- we didn't lose because of poor campaigning or a bad platform or because voters didn't want us (see popular vote totals). But Somerby treats us as if we lost a properly conducted election.

Second, we are eager to convict Trump of wrongdoing because he is dirty, he did wrong. People were eager to catch Al Capone because he was a criminal, he was guilty. So is Trump.

Second, it is entirely proper to want to prosecute and convict someone after they have stolen an election from you. They will get Trump. He is dirty and it is just a matter of time. It may be doubtful whether Sessions goes down with him, but pretending he was just passing the time of day with the ambassador in the context of an election in which Russia hacked and manipulated to achieve a Trump victory, is naïve at best.

Somerby's approach today is like urging a Chicagoan to keep an open mind about Al Capone's guilt. It would be very silly and so is Somerby.

I explained my problem to my friend and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that never believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4 pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him that was how we started living together happily again. How exactly is any of what has happened in this election the result of the age of our leaders? How are the Democrats older than the Republicans? Was Obama exceptionally old? How about Debbie Wasserman Schultz? Al Franken is 65 (not exactly ancient).

Is Somerby hinting that memory problems are responsible and these arise because Sessions is such a fogey he can't remember meeting with the Russian ambassador in Dec? That's a pretty big lapse.

Somerby should adopt a literary device that doesn't casually slander older people, stereotyping them as mentally incompetent. It is not justified by the reality of life for most older people.

Strangely enough, the youth of our country leaned heavily to Sanders.

The rest of the crowd needs to get out of the way and let them move into positions of meaningful service and responsibility along the lines of Sanders' thinking.

Here is some more evidence. Somerby attacks the Democratic party with the heart and soul of a disappointed Bernie Bro. It seems unlikely he has suddenly become a Republican, but it is fashionable among some lefties to attack the "establishment" Democrats. I think Somerby has succumbed to that dark side and is now behaving like a twenty-something idiot. If so, I am not long for this blog.

You read that objectivity as failure to see what is in front of him or advancement of a secret agenda. The irony is that there has never been an election in which the point of his argument here has been proven as clearly as it was with the election of Trump.

    4. Bernie Bros use the term gerontocracy. Somerby uses the term gerontocracy. There may be other reasons for using that term besides being a Bernie disappointee, but no one has suggested any. Additional support comes from Somerby's own stated support for Bernie (quoted earlier in the week), his ongoing criticism of liberals here since the election, and the fact that his complaints make no sense at all unless he failed to vote for Clinton and thus finds common cause with those misguided Trump voters (who all have very good reasons for voting for Trump besides being stupid or worse). He is defending those people because he is one.

    1. I think it matters whether Sessions met with the Russian Ambassador and then lied about it to congress during his confirmation hearing. That isn't nothing -- it is a big deal, especially given that he is being confirmed as Attorney General, the upholder of the nation's laws. Such a meeting was strange (he was not Sec of State) and wouldn't have happened for no reason, or as simple courtesy. The idea that nothing of substance was discussed cannot be correct. But then, why Russia? In the context of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia to manipulate the election, it is a very important meeting and Sessions should have known that -- it was why the question was asked. So his lies are very important and troublesome. Dismissing this as trivial is a Republican ploy. Why is Somerby joining the Republicans to imply this was a triviality being magnified to "get" the current President. That isn't a liberal position at all.

Does anyone have a plausible explanation for why Somerby has taken this tack?

      Delete
    2. No, it's not a big deal. "In the context of a conspiracy" is nothing more than partisan imaginations running wild. Sessions even volunteered the information, it was so far off his radar as meaningful. There is nothing here. It doesn't appear that your recognize that but I could be wrong.

    6. This is the Republican line on the matter -- that the Democrats are overplaying their hand. It is possible Somerby really feels this way, but it is more likely he is supporting Trump for some reason.

I've been a long time reader of this blog but I think this is where we part ways. Sessions statements need to be considered in the context of this whole Russian mess. There is no way he isn't guilty in that context. I see no way that Somerby can have read any of the discussion about this and still feel that Sessions deserves a benefit of doubt or that the Democrats are pushing a tenuous objection too hard in order to take down Trump.

Trump is guilty of colluding with Russia to undermine the US election process and win the presidency in order to benefit Russia and enrich himself and his family (and others who have assisted him in this plan, from loyalist to Russian mobsters). This is a major scandal and Trump will leave office.

Somerby is unaccountably defending Trump via Sessions. Why? Only he can know that, but it doesn't really matter. I have no interest in reading a blog that devotes itself to defending Trump and the indefensible things his people are doing.

Anon 11:14 - I don't know why so many of the comments here feel that Bob should jump on their bandwagon to accuse Sessions of doing things that have not been disclosed. What Bob is trying (apparently inarticulately) to say is that it does not serve our (liberal) purpose to make unsubstantiated claims. This is the general theme of this blog. If you want to believe that Sessions did conspire with the Russians or that he deliberately lied to the Senate, that is your prerogative, but don't expect everyone (Bob) to agree with you or expect to convince non-partisans without actual proof. Pushing for an investigation is the logical thing to do, if you truly believe it will turn up wrongdoing, but to decide what the investigation will reveal, before the evidence is presented, is something out of Alice in Wonderland.

You either believe that Somerby secretly supports Trump, or you have been a long time reader of his blog. It has to be one or the other, b/c if you have actually understood Somerby (vs. just reading) then you would know he could not possibly support Trump. Because he doesn't cheerlead for your preferred candidate does not mean that he supports Trump.

I've been reading Somerby since Bush Jr admin. He criticizes the "liberal" media relentlessly, b/c they work, intentionally or not, against progressive goals (see: coverage of Gore and both Clintons).

He also criticizes "career liberals" b/c they fail to push back against this coverage. ("Career" emphasizes that they value their careers over actual progressive goals.)

Somerby also understands that by overplaying their hand (in this post, stretching to call Sessions a liar), liberals make it EASY for right wing hacks to shoot down their claims. He also (rightly) points out that the current Democratic leadership is so utterly hapless that they have to hope for scandal to remove their opponents, since they are too incompetent to beat them in elections.

He's right on all these points. If you really think he secretly supports Trump, you are either a buffoon or simply can't understand what he's saying.

  5. Democrats have woven a tale around two facts. That Russkies hacked the DNC and the result was Wikileaks reports about Podesta and others, and that Trump said positive things about Putin.

Everyone understands a good opportunity to launch a bogus investigation into your political opponents with a hope of picking up some easily bamboozled rubes.

This is something worse than that, because there are slightly intelligent people who appear convinced, based on literally nothing, that there is reason to believe Trump is somehow guilty of colluding with the Russkies to win his election. For an rube to buy what the media is selling is expected given the hype. For an intelligent person to buy it is the disordered thinking of a familiar derangement syndrome.

As he was leaning toward Medvedev in Seoul, Obama was overheard asking for time — “particularly with missile defense” — until he is in a better position politically to resolve such issues.

“I understand your message about space,” replied Medvedev, who will hand over the presidency to Putin in May.

“This is my last election … After my election I have more flexibility,” Obama said, expressing confidence that he would win a second term.

“I will transmit this information to Vladimir,” said Medvedev, Putin’s protégé and long considered number two in Moscow’s power structure.

The Donald Trump business associate last month splashed down in the middle of a New York Times story about a freelanced Ukraine “peace proposal” hand-delivered to the White House by Mr. Trump’s longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen. Mr. Cohen dropped the proposal off in a sealed envelope at the office of then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The deal outlined “a way for President Trump to lift sanctions against Russia” in exchange for a withdrawal of Kremlin-aligned forces from eastern Ukraine and a long-term lease of Crimea to Moscow, the Times reported. The government of Ukraine was not pleased. A spokesman called the deal a “gross violation of the [Ukraine] Constitution” by forces “covertly representing Russian interests.”

So, stop right there. What in fuck is Trump's personal lawyer doing passing a Russian document in a sealed envelope off to the previous NSA Advisor, Michael Flynn?

  6. Somerby gets knocked out in the first round! Ouch.

    http://www.politico.com/story/2017/03/jeff-sessions-doj-russia-investigation-republicans-react-235604

Unless, TDH is going to claim that Sessions was going to recuse himself anyway...and further, recuse himself today. To be fair, I'm just saying Somerby is wrong on the politics of Democratic Party outrage, not that Sessions did anything more or less than he's admitted. The Washington Post and Democratic Senators just got Sessions to recuse himself. That's a win.

  7. This thing goes deeper than any of us even knew. Now we're finding out that key Democrats have also been lying about meeting with the Russian ambassador, and dissembling when caught. Members of every party are involved in this web of conspiracy. Every member of the US government should recuse himself, and we should look to the UN to uncover the crimes by Trump, his administration, Jill Stein, and leading Democrats.

"Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., has been in damage control mode all day after she was caught falsely claiming she has never "ever" met with a Russian ambassador in her capacity as a member of the Armed Services Committee. McCaskill admitted to CNN's Ashley Killough that she had, in fact, met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. However, the senator stressed, it was never a "one-on-one." She also blamed Twitter's character limit for prohibiting her from being more precise."

    1. The difference being that McCaskill didn't lie under oath during a Senate confirmation hearing.

  8. So great to come here and see that Bob has finally given up the lie that he's liberal and is now actively parroting right wing talking points.

  9. For a professed liberal, Somerby seems to spend all his time attacking 'other' liberals and left wing commentators. I think he still hasn't gotten over so-called attacks on Gore back in 2000. I hardly ever see him attacking Fox News coverage, but about half his columns attack Maddow and others. It's fine to be a right winger, but don't pretend to be a liberal.

    1. He is attacking Democrats from the left not the right. He is a Bernie supporter who thinks the Democratic party and its adherents are incompetent and should be replaced with teenagers like the ones who sabotaged Hillary during the last election.

  11. Hello, I am Theresa Williams After being in relationship with Anderson for years, he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem. email: drogunduspellcaster@gmail.com you can email him if you need his assistance in your relationship or any other Case.
