BREAKING: Every time a box of Meuslix is sold...!

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2018

Chuck Todd earns his wings:
We've fallen into several "time passages" around here of late.

In a previous post, we reported the time passage into which we tumbled upon rereading Norman Malcolm's Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Memoir after perhaps forty years. Yesterday, along came Chuck Todd!

Chuck's work has been better and better on MTP Daily. Yesterday, though, he came into his own, thoughtfully offering this (emphasis at the end):
TODD (11/16/18): Welcome back. Tonight I'm obsessed with America's elections because they're apparently part of a complete breakfast.

In that interview with The Daily Caller we mentioned earlier, President Trump called for more voter I.D. laws in this country, saying, "if you buy a box of cereal, you have a voter I.D."

So the president apparently thinks you need identification to buy breakfast cereal, which is honey bunches of nonsense. But honestly, if you think about it, perhaps we can really should I.D. people if they are going to buy cereal.

To misquote Hunter S. Thompson, the cereal aisle is a cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the supermarket. A long plastic hallway where Cheerios and marshmallows run free. Who knows what could be inside those boxes? Is it even from natural ingredients?

Grape Nuts. Can Grape Nuts be fermented and turned into Wine Nuts? By the way, you need an I.D. to buy alcohol. Did you ever notice there are no grapes or nuts in that?

Shredded Wheat. So violent, gruesome. Shouldn't it be rated "M" for mature? Shredded wheat. And who knows what makes Special K so special. What aren't they telling us?

Maybe they should check I.D.s to see who is buying this stuff. Why stop there? How about tuna fish with its practically endless shelf life? Are people stockpiling it? Maybe we should keep track of the people that buy too much tuna fish.

Why? Do they know something we don't? Is it in their bunkers with vinegar and baking soda, the ingredients to homemade volcanoes? The foamy unfathomable horror of pre-washed salad. How do you wash salad before you wash the salad? All very suspicious.

So I say let's check I.D.s for everything at the grocery store. People will fall in line as long as it's 10 items or less.

By the way, big shout-out to my old friend Bob Somerby, the best cereal jokes known to man. It's Just Right.
Maybe a year ago, we received word that Chuck has been asking around to see if people remembered the words to our old Meuslix jokes. Basic premise: You get stuck, while playing Scrabble, with an unplayed 7-letter word. Who knew it was even a word?

Or words to that effect. We knew it by heart way back when.

Darn it all! Do you know how many old friends you have to recuse yourself from when you embark on a pointless project like this? How many years has it been since we bar-hopped with Matthews and Dowd?

Chuck is a very good guy; we go all the way back to the old Hotline days. But then, as we've often noted, the world is full of good, decent people. For the record, the Just Right joke goes something like this:

You hold up two different varieties of Just Right. Then, after the proper set-up, you skillfully say, with exasperation, "One of them has to be partially wrong!"

Can't quite recall the way that went. We've plainly been at this too long.

Very-special bonus presentation: We're not sure that Chuck (along with everyone else) got it right concerning what Trump so masterfully said. We suspect he likely meant this:

They're so lax about ID that if you just show them a cereal box, they'll happily wave you along.

We suspect that's what he meant. Where we vote, up Baltimore way, they ask for no ID at all.

  1. IMHO Trump was cleverly exaggerating. His point was that one needs an ID for many ordinary activities, such as cashing a check, or flying, or medical treatment, or entrance to many commercial buildings. By exaggerating, Trump got wider coverage of the point he was making. His statement was not accurate, but his general point is valid.

    1. Voting is a right enshrined in the constitution. None of the things you mentioned are.

      Delete
    2. But, it's constitutional to use some method to be certain that voters are legally entitled to vote. E.g., my signature is checked.

    3. Equating voting with buying groceries is a misdirection. One is a privilege, the other is a right. You cannot treat a right that casually. At some point, after adding enough restrictions, a right ceases to be a right anymore. Poll taxes and literacy tests didn’t theoretically take away your right to vote, as long as you could pay the tax or pass the test. And they were both considered “constitutional”, until they weren’t.

    4. I fully agree @4:06 PM. The question is whether the method used to verify eligibility is some normal approach or a trick used to deprive people of their Constitutional rights. Poll taxes and literacy tests were quite obviously the latter. Trump is arguing that requiring an ID is the former -- a common, normal way to check identity.

    5. Signature matching is an asinine idea, leaving it to untrained volunteers to make the call that even handwriting experts will not agree on and is not an exact science. Just another way to gum up the works. Once again, a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

    6. Signature matching is an asinine idea, unless they decide to do only in certain precincts...wink wink. Then it becomes nefarious.

    7. mm - what would you do to ensure that ineligible voters don't vote?

    8. For 40 years in my state, you went to your polling place, told them your name and address, they found you in the book, you signed your name, and you voted. No additional ID was required. And it worked just fine. No one was impersonating a registered voter.

    9. When I was young and lived in Chicago, I went to my precinct and was told I had already voted. Maybe someone made a mistake or maybe someone voted for me. Either way, the precinct workers said "I know this woman, she lives in my building, she hasn't been in here today" and I was permitted to vote. It wasn't a problem for me. Chicago is notorious for its machine politics, but it didn't disenfranchise me. That is how communities are supposed to work. ID isn't necessary when you are voting in a community of people who you live shoulder to shoulder with.

If we are transitioning to a system where people don't know each other, then we should be using fingerprints or something impersonal that will actually identify and sort out who is eligible and who is not.

    10. We already have a system, David. It's called voter registration.

But of course your party is more interested is relentlessly devising means to prevent eligible voters from voting. As we just witnessed in Georgia.

    11. mm - how do prevent someone voting under someone else's registration? Since many registered voters have moved away or died, this could be a real problem if people were inclined to cheat.

    12. If people were inclined to cheat, they'd make it harder for certain citizens to vote. In fact, they do.

  3. Lol. We were always aware of the fact that the luminaries of the lib-zombie death-cult (not to mention the rank&file) have no sense of humor whatsoever.

But thanks for the confirmation, Bob.

  4. Voter ID is part of the ongoing effort by Republicans to suppress votes and disenfranchise voters, and is a serious problem and a threat to the country. Somerby making light of what Trump said by “assuming” he meant something innocuous is a gross misunderstanding or misrepresentation of Trump’s (and the GOP’s) relentless bad faith efforts and his/their insidious ranting about “rigged elections” and “voter fraud”.
It’s also a crappy thing for Somerby to casually reference such a serious problem in a post that is mainly about the warm glow Somerby felt when corporate hack Chuck Todd fawned on Somerby.

    1. "Voter ID is part of the ongoing effort by Republicans to suppress votes and disenfranchise voters"

Ah. Would this be a lie or misstatement?

Or is this god's honest truth, together with Democrats are going to let illegal immigrants vote?

      Delete
    2. The courts have been deciding this, pretty much in the Democrats favor. So it is neither a lie or misstatement. At the same time, courts have not found that Democrats have been letting illegal immigrants vote. So I would call that a lie.

    3. That's another lie. Show me one court decision declaring "ongoing effort by Republicans to suppress votes and disenfranchise voters". You can't stop lying, can you?

      As for non-citizens voting, here:
      https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/24/us/north-carolina-illegal-voters.html

"Mr. Paez-Jerez pleaded guilty to passport fraud and voting by an alien on Aug. 14. He faces up to 11 years in prison and a fine of up to $350,000.

A Mexican citizen charged with illegal voting, 26-year-old Diana Patricia Franco-Rodriguez, was also charged with fraud and misuse of visas and other documents, and if convicted faces up to 26 years in prison and $350,000 in fines.
      "

Surely it's perfectly reasonable to claim that by fighting voter ID initiatives tooth and nail Democrats are going to let illegal immigrants (like these two) vote?

      Delete
    4. That's a lot short of 3 million illegal voters.

      Delete
    5. Yes, just like passports, credit cards, SSN, voter ID is completely and utterly foolproof. How ever did this country manage to vote for 200 years without voter ID??

Everyone has to register to be able to vote. What is the purpose of some additional ID? If they demand that I bring a utility bill, a birth certificate, a pay stub, etc, where does it end? Thousands of Native Americans in ND, who had been voting their whole lives, were told that they couldn’t vote because they had no street address. This is the context in which voter ID is brought up.

    6. That was one random check. If the 'party' representing foreign underclass (the Democrats) allowed a systematic analysis and impartial investigation (there's no chance of that, obviously), that would, perhaps, discovered millions. Or tens of millions, who knows. We don't know.

    7. 12:00,
Yes, yes, yes. More and more investigations by the new House of Representatives, please.

  5. It is spelled "Mueslix" not Meuslix, as Somerby has it.

Is it too to expect him to look this up before posting about it?
