Amid despair for the fate of the world:
We'll be returning to our sprawling campus later today. Tomorrow, we expect to complete our suspended series, The Woke and the Bused.

The first thing we read today was this account of the Biden-Harris non-dispute dispute. If this is the best journalism we liberals and progressives can manage; if those are the best candidates the more liberal party can generate; then, with a carefree song in our hearts, we continue to despair about the fate of the world.

Especially given the things we've been told by top future star anthropologists!

(Regarding the journalism, where do "misconceptions" come from? Over the past thirty-plus years, they've come from mainstream journalism of the type to which we've linked. Several parts of that short dispatch are pure novelization. Then again, "Consider the species," as a despondent future anthropologist recently said.)

Tomorrow, the return of The Woke and the Bused. Wednesday? Jury duty!

What "party", dear Bob? Is that what you call your liberal zombie cult? How quaint.

There's not one iota of difference between your "best" zombie clowns and your "worst" zombie clowns, Bob. Get used to it.

    1. When you don't have anything to say, like in this instance, why don't you just post "First!" and leave it at that?

  2. Biden said: "I regret it and I’m sorry for any of the pain and misconception it may have caused to anybody."

This is a non-apology apology, of the type "I'm sorry if you misunderstood what I said". Others are blamed for misunderstanding him. He takes no responsibility for his own words except he regrets that a fuss is being made.

That is not an apology. Further, why should Biden have ever expected to be called "boy," a race-tinged patronizing name that was reserved for adult African American males? He was and is white. The cluelessness of his statement is that he implies that Southerners called all men "boy," not just black men. He implies that he earned the label "son" by working amicably with segregationists, when he was given that label solely because he was white, not because he was better liked. In other words, Biden is unaware of his white privilege and attributed his treatment to his own virtue, not his skin color. And he is still making that mistake by attributing the complaints to "misunderstanding" and over-sensitivity, blaming African Americans such as Booker and Harris for their own reactions.

What a guy! Meanwhile, the voting public snoozes through the controversy and he remains in the lead. And Somerby focuses on Harris not Booker as a wrongdoer, claiming that the media is chasing the wrong person when it points out Biden's faults.

Maybe Somerby likes being called "son" too. In bigot-speak, women are called "girl" in a demeaning manner or "sister" in a benign but patronizing manner. But "sister" is now reserved for African American women to call each other, not for use by white men with white women, and not "daughter" unless actually related. Why is there no female equivalent to "son"? Perhaps because there are so few women and because male segregationists didn't interact with them. Perhaps because there is no way to patronize a woman without offending her protectors, her husband, father or brother? Or maybe such men never got past calling any female legislator "girl" or "girlie girl" or "honey" or "sweetie" or some such?

It doesn't occur to Somerby to place himself or Harris or anyone else in Biden's place, to see what the issue really is. Just as it doesn't occur to Biden to wonder what the fuss is about or to empathize sufficiently to understand what is wrong with what he said, so that he can actually apologize for "not getting it" and try to do better next time. He is stuck in his own time and his own white male context and he never bothered to keep up with the times, because his deeds during the civil rights era surely entitle him to skip that step. He is ill-equipped to deal with the more subtle problems faced by African Americans today, just as Somerby has no clue about what those beautiful black children are dealing with in their homes and lives.

    4. "empathize sufficiently". Oh my. Now there's a moving target, A standard that means nothing.

      Girl, you are lost.

But I know you desperately want to have a female president and I also know you are very, very poorly informed by the people to whom you turn for information on politics.

Don't worry too much. You are going to be in for a rough ride. It is not going to be easy in the short-term and you will suffer a lot but in the end, you will be happy and you will get what you want.

    5. "Empathize sufficiently" indeed. These obnoxious scolds are beyond belief. They are sure to nominate someone like Harris who will repel voters even more than Hillary did. Trump has nothing to worry about.

    9. Conservatives empathize with actual people. The victims of a half century of failed lefty policies and excuses for example. A young black kid is told from birth he has a target on his back and he is a victim and if only there were more money and cops hate him and he's doomed, all lies.

California is a cesspool of lefty empathy. Rich dumb amoral celebrities and multiplying plague ridden homeless populations.

Lefties don't empathize with people, they adopt ideas that let them scold The Other and feel a rush of emotion (power), and then call it empathy. It's a narcissistic ideology.

Simpleminded youngsters believe it because they can't do the complicated math required to appreciate better solutions. That's why lefties want to lower the voting age to 16. They know their power depends on more dumb people voting.

    1. No blacks are concerned. White lefties who created their real problems aren't either, but they enjoy indulging themselves in phony empathy.

    2. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris seemed pretty concerned.

If some African Americans make a decision not to sweat the small stuff, it doesn't mean they are condoning it.

No empathy is wasted, whether you consider it phony or not. By definition, it cannot help but change our perspective and cause us to treat others more compassionately. I realize that is not a priority for conservatives but it is consistent with Christianity and should be a goal for those trying to live a good life. If you do not have such values, that is your problem.

    3. Phony empathy that exacerbates and perpetuates the very problems it pretends to address and is even worse than wasted and it's all the bankrupt left has. It's the bankrupt left's self indulgent substitute for admitting its abysmal failure and damage to society.

    5. What they do is not phony empathy. Phony empathy is consoling someone who's upset.

What liberals do is incitement of hatred, plain and simple.

Inventing and cultivating fake group-grievances to set segments of the working class against each other and destroy any possibility of workers' solidarity. That's their basic strategy.

      Meh.

Think of Ted Kennedy, for example (or Bill Clinton, for that matter), the 'champion' of 'women's rights'. Clearly, the guy was a typical male predator, compensating by endlessly repeating feminazi bullshit.

I think it's pretty clear that liberals (the liberal bosses, at least) in fact despise the people they manipulate for their own advantage.

  4. Vote Tom Steyer -- he is the only Democratic candidate running on an explicit "Impeach Trump" platform.

    1. Steyer might be an effective candidate. Just as in 2016 Trump came in late and took the Republican nomination, Steyer might be able to do the same thing with the Dems. Of course, Trump had a national reputation.

    2. All the top Democratic contenders beat Trump in all the polls - even Fox News' polls and Trump's internal polls, many of them support impeachment of what is likely the most openly corrupt president in modern history. They also all support similar policies, vote for the one who will govern the best - they all will govern light years beyond Trump. Sanders and Warren are probably the most experienced and competent of the candidates, but there are a few that would likely be reasonably good as president. Can't get much worse than our current, hmm well...ignored warnings of worst terrorist attack followed by lying us into useless wars that caused hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths followed by an impotent reaction to playing a role in the worst economic crash since the Great Depression which came after a historic transfer of wealth to the 1% via tax and regulation cuts for the rich. Obama sucked in some ways, his third way centrist corporatist inclinations, but Lordy, the mess he had to clean up.

Republicans are not bothered by corruption, for them, the ends justify the means; they are outnumbered among the populace but non Republicans tend to be more apathetic about political score-keeping and voting.

Generally, Democratics want to help those in need, and Republicans want to help themselves.

Keep in mind, if an employer pays an employee equal to what they contribute, the employer will struggle to make a profit.

  5. Somerby likes to post his statistics on demographics, but what about statistics describing the impact of desegregation on the students involved?

This report describes an increase in annual earnings, wages and hours worked for men for each year spent in a desegregated school. The impact is about 5% increase per year. That is not nothing.

    https://www.nber.org/digest/may11/w16664.html

If parents knew about this, would they be opposed to busing their kids? Should any advocate be actively against desegregation knowing that opposing busing will negatively affect future earnings of the students?

If Somerby cared about children, would he advocate an outcome that is manifestly not in their interests?

Note that the reported salary benefits are not contingent on attaining any specific success rate demographically speaking. Somerby worries excessively about achieving some specific balance, but that doesn't seem to be necessary to produce good results for the kids who were bused.

    1. Also an Answer Sheet: Perspective report in the Washington Post today, entitled: "What black students who were bused said about their experiences". The author also interviewed white students. They largely have positive things to say about their experiences being bused in Boston in 1974.

    2. As a poor white kid, I was bullied until busing brought Dwight W. to my school, a tough black kid that befriended me and ended the bullying. The music on the bus ride to school was much improved as his boom box was louder and did not play Eagles or Lynyrd Skynyrd.
