THURSDAY: O'Donnell takes a walk on the dangerous side!

THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2025

Plus, Suzanne Scott opens the can: Last evening, we didn't watch The Last Word. Through the miracle of On Demand, we watched it late this morning.

Given our own ongoing ruminations, we thought we ought to comment.

We've complimented Lawrence O'Donnell for his angry pushback in the past few weeks—for his angry pushback against the destruction of USAID, to cite one prime example.

Children are dying around the world as a consequence of that action. To his vast credit, Lawrence O'Donnell has shown the capacity to care.

In our view, O'Donnell has been appropriately angry. That said, he isn't a medical specialist.

O'Donnell isn't a medical specialist. Last night, he seemed to play one on TV in a 19-minute opening monologue.

In our view, he was now showing his anger in a somewhat dangerous way. Over his left shoulder, there it sat—in large letters, the stated theme for this opening segment:

Trump "insane"

That's what the headline said.

As he delivered his monologue, Lawrence referred to Steve Liesman's recent language about President Trump, as we ourselves did this morning. That said, we thought he came close to getting way out over his skis.

We'd be happy to see someone like O'Donnell bring a medical specialist onto his show to discuss President Trump's apparent or possible mental state.  But Lawrence himself, on his own, isn't the right person for that task—and he'd have to be extremely careful about his selection of an actual medical expert to stage some such discussion.

(He'd have to choose a medical specialist who didn't betray any politics. He'd have to choose a medical specialist who was able to demonstrate empathy for people who may be afflicted in some way or other.)

Lawrence was visibly angry last night. Overall, we thought his judgment was poor. You can watch the entire 19-minute segment simply by clicking here

(That takes you to videotape at the Last Word site. It doesn't take you to the Internet Archive, which no longer seems to be functioning in a usable way.)

During this segment, we thought Lawrence began to succumb to the type of judgment which is enabled by anger, as he's occasionally done in the past. Two hours earlier, on the Fox News Channel, an appalling segment had aired.

We refer to a segment on Jesse Watters Primetime—a sad but instructive seven minutes you can watch by clicking this. Watters was joined by Rachel Campos-Duffy, co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend.

The segment was "Gossip Child" pseudo-journalism at its smallest, dumbest and worst. It's amazing to see the triumphalist way in which some people respond to temporary political wins by their political tribe.

The pair of cablers used this "cable news" segment to slime Barack and Michelle Obama. All in all, we humans can be amazingly petty and small.

"She's always been negative and nasty," Campos-Duffy eventually said, speaking of the former first lady. Soon, Campo-Duffy was fluffing "the divorce rumors," already having thrown chum into the water which was even dumber and more sleazy than that.

(Also, "something seems off" with Michelle Obama's brother, Watters dumbly opined at one point.)

At the age of 46, Watters is the dumbest child ever placed on the air as part of a TV "news" program. With respect to Campos-Duffy, we wished we could return to the good old days before the win by President Trump—to the days when she restricted herself to naming the Communists, Marxists, socialists and pagans she is somehow able to find under every bed.

It's amazing that CEO Suzanne Scott is willing to open the garbage can each night and put this swill on the air. This sort of thing is sold as prime time "cable news" to millions of Fox News viewers.

(Incredibly, it gets even dumber and worse at 10 p.m. every night. Blue America's major journalists are unwilling to say a word about the ugly and deeply stupid mayhem which airs each night at that time.)

Last night, as we watched this pair in action, we thought of the scene from Ryan's Daughter in which the marauding villagers attack the Sarah Miles character in the ways they suddenly can.

That scene comes late in that very long 1970 film. We recall it, even today, as perhaps the ugliest and most instructive scene we've ever seen in a film. Whether you're Red or whether you're Blue, we would offer this advice:

Try not to be like that.

The gossip gang ran wild on the Fox News Channel last night. That said, if we might borrow from Don Corleone:

This is the species we've chosen!

"Ain't that America," John Mellencamp said. On Fox, each night, yes it is!

  1. Somerby's advice: when right wingers engage in corruption and criminality, do not get angry, do not try to prosecute them, do not protest or fight them, just focus on how to properly term their mental impairments, and otherwise just lie back and take it, since it is all your fault anyways, look at what you made them do.

Ok Somerby, good to know where you stand, good to observe your right wing/Republican apologia.

If only you were around in the past, we could still have slaves and be rid of all Jews.

    1. Whether this is more ugly or more stupid is hard to tell.

    2. It seems stupid to declare O’Donnell “over his skis” because he seemed angry rather than empathetic towards Trump, of all people.

    3. Right-wingers think we should show empathy for Republican crooks, while ignoring their victims.
BTW, does anyone know why people accuse Somerby of being a Right-winger?

  2. "Lawrence was visibly angry last night."

    Really?? Ahhh, how dramatic!

Anywho, as long as idiot-DemocRats continue being mad as a March hare, I know everything is fine. Relax, everybody.

    1. “Schumer is no longer a Jew” Will go down in history along side the statements like the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, or a house divided against itself cannot stand

  3. Somerby is not angry because he does not care.

Republicans are hell bent on destroying our country to benefit a handful of billionaires, yet our boy keeps whistling his same dumb right wing tune, without a sincere or genuine care in the world.

  4. "Fox is a garbage-can, corporate propaganda machine" is your idea of a right-wing tune, I guess.

    1. Somerby can take his empathy for Trump and shove it up his ass dog face.

    2. I guess that's your idea of a left-wing tune.

    3. No, it isn’t. It’s a human tune, dog face. No one in his right mind urges sympathy for Trump. It renders Somerby ridiculous at best.

    6. I mean, I suppose somebody could have recommended pity for Hitler or Mussolini, but that seems abysmally stupid. It also seems almost perversely insulting to the people hurt by them.

  5. If you watch the clip from O’Donnell, you’ll notice that at least a part of O’Donnell‘s anger was directed at the White House press corps, who simply sat there and let Trump say these bizarre insane things. He reminded us how they would routinely shout over each other and go after Biden demanding that he answer their questions. If Biden had said, as Trump did, in the presence of the Irish leader, that Schumer is no longer a Jew, but a Palestinian in response to a question having nothing to do with Schumer Jews or Palestinians, Somerby and the entire press corps would have declared Biden to be demented. Are we hearing that from the press corps today? Nope. Only O’Donnell.

    1. Also, O’Donnell directs his anger at Republicans who sit silently by and let trump say these insanities.

    2. 4:43 Saying Schumer is a Palestinian is a metaphor criticizing him for inadequate support of Israel.

      Delete
    3. First of all, DiC, The question Trump was responding to was about corporate taxes, not about Israel or Jews versus Palestinians.

Second, what the fuck is “adequate support of Israel?” Schumer has been a pretty strong advocate of support to Israel, but that isn’t relevant. The president does not get to decide that someone is no longer Jewish because they don’t 100% support Netanyahu, or your idea of “ adequate support of Israel.” any other president saying such a thing would have been raked over the coals. Besides, 71% of Jews voted for Harris. Are they now all Palestinians?

There’s nothing this man can do or say that you won’t defend.

    4. Saying David in Cal is a self-hating Jew, is a metaphor criticizing him for his support for Trump, Musk, Mille, and the other fascists.

    5. @5:37 sorry if I was unclear. @4.47 though Trump’s comment was bizarre and insane. I was defending Trump against that accusation.

I don’t know if I agree with Trump. I haven’t paid enough attention to Schumer to decide whether he’s sufficiently supportive of Israel.

Taking metaphors literally is either dumb or unfair. It can make any statement sound insane.

  8. No normal person believes Trump is "insane." In fact he is one of the most sane people to ever serve in the Oval Office. Kicking and foot stomping is not going to change the minds of normal people, especially when those lobbing the insult defend pervert drag queens dancing for children, and throngs of Jew haters marching on campuses.

      C'mon, now.
If you're going to criticize Republican voters for rioting at the United States Capitol, just because black people's votes counted in the 2020 Presidential election. Shouldn't you also praise them for not getting upset in slightest about Trump giving the rich and corporations a HUGE tax break?
Especially since our corporate-owned Right-wing media (AKA the media) assured us Republican voters were "economically anxious", and not just a shit pile of bigots.
Let's give them credit, where credit is due.

    5. Gonna enjoy watching the "economically anxious" follow their right wing media orders to be thankful for the upcoming recession.

    6. Republican voters support the bigotry Republican politicians give them. EVERYTHING else is negotiable.

    7. Republican voters democratically decided they don't want a democracy anymore. Democratic institutions make it very difficult to implement their racist goals. So, they were willing to sacrifice democracy to cut thru the hard work of democracy and finally achieve their bigotry. Federal judges now are trying to put a check on our dictators, but the dictators just laugh at them and say "you and what army." Meanwhile, King Orange Chickenshit sits around screaming at the world and patiently waits for the Supreme Court to make him an official King.
