The headline treats this apparent (and presumably dangerous) problem as a source of mockery and insult. We'll almost surely be returning to this apparent problem when we resume next week.

Trump says Kennedy Center could be ‘ripped down’ without his intervention
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his administration deserves to have its name recognized at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in exchange for rescuing the financially troubled institution, warning that without his intervention the venue will eventually close and be “ripped down.”
“For us as an administration to want to do that, I think the Trump administration should be recognized,” Trump told reporters while visiting North Carolina to campaign for the Republican Senate nominee. The president said the center would require years of financial support even after a roughly $250 million renovation.
“Frankly, if we don’t do that, it’s going to close,” he said. “It’ll end up being ripped down.”
Trump’s remarks sharpened his position that saving the Kennedy Center hinges on putting his name on the building, a day after he threatened to block its renovation unless the courts allow the institution to do just that.

I’d say “Donnie Dementia” is far more effective than “poor, troubled, mentally afflicted Trump, whose father was also afflicted. His high gas prices and broken promises make us pity him more.” Especially with former Trump voters. Ridicule is a powerful tool. Heaven knows republicans use it relentlessly.
ReplyDelete"Ridicule" and "ridiculous" come from the same Latin root. Given that, one would think Trump, being the most ridiculous figure ever to reach the main stage of politics, would be a source of universal ridicule. But because he represents the ultimate protected classes -- white people and the rich -- the ridicule only comes from partisan quarters. Everyone else must ignore the obvious, and treat this clownish con artist as a figure no different than what came before him. To do anything less is somehow an insult to all those good and decent people out there who vote for him and cheer him on as he makes billions while driving the country into the ground.

DeleteMaybe some small portion of Trump's ridicule comes from partisanship, but the vast majority comes from his behavior which is negatively impacting nearly everyone, in both America and the world.
People like Somerby who are worried about Trump's negative impact on the GOP, as well as others who support Trump wholeheartedly, want to frame criticism of Trump as mainly partisanship.
And they want to push Dems to be less ridiculing of and more compliant to Republicans, thereby eliminating a powerful motivating factor which would then aide in keeping the right wing ruling elites, the non boorish ones, in power.
Somerby is asking the rest of the world to pity Trump, yet his own family is awol.

The other, and more important part of this, is that I'm not a politician. I'm some guy on the internet. What is of interest to me is not what this or that politician says per se, but WHY Trump and the Republicans can say almost anything they want about Democrats, whereas Democrats -- and people who aren't even Democrats -- have to police every little thing they say or the media lynch mob brings out the ropes and torches. Once upon a time, this blog talked about that kind of thing. Now, all Somerby does is wag his finger and then wring his hands in what I (guess I) assume is genuine anguish over some misstep some politician is alleged to have made that might offend those "good and decent people" who, despite supporting every vile thing Trump does, might still be coaxed into voting for Democrats.
