We don't love Friedman's answer: We Americans! Assuming we escape disaster, we'll need to know how to heal.
What kind of disaster might we face in the two years and two months which follow November's elections? In this morning's New York Times, Thomas Friedman floats an idea.
Headline included, his column starts like this:
Trump Is Going Viral in the Worst Ways
President Trump is such an awful human being that just writing about him feels degrading. What president would denigrate his predecessor in front of China’s leader the way Trump mocked Joe Biden, now suffering from cancer, by pointing out that a framed picture of an autopen was hanging in the White House instead of Biden’s portrait?
Alas, though, when someone as morally warped as Trump—whose first secretary of state called him a “moron”—assumes this much unchecked power at the dawn of the Age of Artificial Intelligence, he can’t be ignored. Because right now Trump is leaving America exposed to dangerous viruses: digital, biological and diplomatic. Something bad is going to happen to us as a result. We and our children are going to pay for this, and not only at the gas pump.
That's the start of the column. Friedman says the current president exposes us, and perhaps the rest of the world, to danger on three fronts—digital, biological and diplomatic.
If anything, we think he understates the global "diplomatic" danger. But the danger is real, and as we type, the sitting president will still be president for the next two years and four months.
Friedman starts with a fairly obvious but very important question. Here it is, once again:
What president would denigrate his predecessor in front of China’s leader the way Trump mocked Joe Biden, now suffering from cancer...
What kind of president would do something like that? Friedman is asking a very basic question. We disagree with his answer.
What kind of president would behave in the ways the sitting president does? Friedman days the president is "morally warped." He says the president is "an awful human being"—so awful that "just writing about him feels degrading."
That isn't the way we'd answer that question. We'd suggest the answer given by the president's niece on CNN, when she spoke with Erin Burnett, earlier this very year. We've posted this many times:
BURNETT (2/26/26): You've known him your whole life. Do you actually see a decline?
MARY L. TRUMP: I do, but I think it's important to remember that Donald has never been fit in any capacity. Obviously, what we're dealing with now are age-related cognitive declines. We're dealing with physical issues that the White House tries to cover over.
But this is somebody who for decades now has had serious, undiagnosed and untreated psychiatric disorders, which are only going to worsen, especially given the pressure he's under and given the cognitive and physical declines.
The president's niece is a doctorate-holding clinical therapist. She told Burnett that her uncle is severely mentally ill and has been so "for decades."
She also said that "obvious cognitive declines" are now layered on top of those earlier conditions.
People like Friedman won't speak that way. Along with a president of the type described by Mary Trump, we have an entire upper-end press corps whose members and orgs have agreed that they will never discuss what seems to be sitting right there before them.
Tomorrow, we may briefly consider Rachel Maddow's latest film. For today, as the analysts return from their various far-flung vacation sites around the world, we will only say this:
We face enormous danger in the years ahead. Our news orgs cling to ancient rules in the face of this situation.
If we avoid disaster, the tribalized state of our society will force us to seek a way to heal. Carl Sandburg imagined one possible source of healing at the end of Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years. His highly poetic suggestion appears as the president-elect travels to rural Coles County, Illinois, for his final visit with his stepmother, Sally Bush (Sarah Bush Lincoln).
In the last few weeks, we've been thinking about that passage from Sandburg's famous biography. Yesterday morning, we showed you the way the passage begins.
Before the week is done, we'll show you where it goes next.
Tomorrow: Maddow goes true crime?
ReplyDelete"The president's niece is a doctorate-holding clinical therapist. She told Burnett that her uncle is severely mentally ill and has been so "for decades.""
Meh. Who cares what slurs president's niece (or any other TDS sufferer) may have uttered? Have you heard that it's considered unethical to diagnose relatives?
Trump's niece is a doctorate holding clinical psychologist, not a therapist. You can be a therapist with a M.S. (in some states) or no degree at all (in other states). As a licensed clinical psychologist, she worked at the Manhattan Psychiatric Center and taught courses on developmental psychology, trauma, and psychopathology.
DeleteIt is absolutely unethical to diagnose relatives. It is also unethical to diagnose someone without an appropriate assessment, which typically includes tests developed for that purpose. She has routinely stated that herself and does not claim to be diagnosing him clinically but IS claiming that he is unfit to be president. There is no test for that beyond the decisions of voters and the minimal qualifications in the Constitution. But Trump serves at the will of the people. We can remove him, if we ever exercised our power to do so collectively.
Why does Somerby keep downplaying Mary Trump's qualifications, if he agrees with what she says about Trump's mental status?
DeleteYou'd have to have a terrible case of TDS to think Trump is more of a corrupt criminal than any other businessperson.
DeleteThey say the first thing you notice when they cure your TDS, is that Trump's over the top criminality and corruption is in no way worse than that of any other business person.
DeleteKarl Marx tried to warn us about business people well over a century ago, but morons thought they knew better.
DeleteOther business people pay way more attention to expenses than Trump does. They care about the bottom line. Trump's spending would disqualify him from business. Look at his repeated failures. Being a grifter and con artist is not the same as business.
DeleteTrump's latest grift is selling .si domain names now that he is changing the name of ai (with .ai domain names) to si (super intelligence).
Karl was the least funny Marx.
Delete12:31 - the only business he didn't bankrupt was the one where he read a script of a teleprompter on that retarded TV show. Always a fucking destructive idiot. Always and forever.
DeleteIt's his credo.
DeleteCredo in unum Deum, patrem omnipotentem.
DeleteCalling Trump mentally ill (or psychiatrically disordered) solves nothing and answers nothing about how to treat such a man who has been elected to our highest political office. Somerby's quibble with Friedman answers no questions whatsoever, especially not what we should do with such a person now that he holds office.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Somerby bother typing out this same paragraph over and other, without any suggestions about how to deal with Trump, much less his own query about how to heal?
I am concerned because Somergy says he disagrees with Friedman about feeling degraded. And, whether because of his psychiatric disorders or not, Trump is obviously morally warped. Somerby leaves it vague about what specifically he disagrees with Friedman about, but there should be agreement that Trump is morally warped. He is a criminal who hurts people on purpose and for his own pleasure.
We do not suspend our moral codes and laws for someone who is disordered. NAMI says that 37-43% of incarcerated criminals have been diagnosed as mentally ill. We put people who break the law in jail. That needs to happen to Trump regardless of the reason for his misbehavior. If he is legally insane, he needs to be put in a hospital for the criminally insane.
There can be no healing while Trump's crimes against humanity are ignored. Pretending Trump's abnormal behavior is normal (as Xi was forced to do during his visit) is not a solution for our nation. But Somerby never discussed solutions, or even coping methods. He only attacks blue America, as if we had even voted for Trump much less tolerated him.
In the case of Lincoln, the nation was divided but Lincoln himself was sane. That is not the same situation as where red and blue America are increasingly on the same page about Trump's disorder, but it is Trump that needs to be fixed, not the voters. The growing consensus on left and right about Trump's unfitness is the one hopeful sign that our nation can survive this. But that rests on voting enough Democrats into offices up and down the ticket to curb Trump's worst impulses. It is key that everyone vote for Democrats, red and blue alike. If people like Somerby cannot see that Trump needs to be restrained, at least the rest of us can use our power as citizens to limit Trump's ability to do harm.
If Somerby had any sense, he would be writing this, not me.
ZZZzzzzzz.
DeleteJefferson Davis was insane.
Delete@12:26 Spot on imitation of Trump, the moment someone else is speaking.
Delete"That is not the same situation as where red and blue America are increasingly on the same page about Trump's disorder, but it is Trump that needs to be fixed, not the voters. "
DeleteTrump's approval rating is 80% with the GOP. Red America put him into office -- twice. If there were another primary now, he'd win -- easily. The entire party is beholden to him and his whims -- almost anything he says is treated as if it came from a burning bush. GOP politicians are terrified of his wrath. I don't know where you get the idea that red America is coming to any page with blue America. The problem IS the voters, and that problem is going to persist after -- or assuming -- Trump finally sundowns off into immediate irrelevance. Although frankly, Trump has failed to address so many vital issues and done so much damage, so quickly, and at such an incredibly crucial time, it might not matter any more what the voters do.
The whole Republican Fascist Project 2025 - needs to be stomped to the curb. Thankfully they are stupid as rocks. Didn't you love look on Britt's face when Eric's big career defining gaslit "gotcha" ended up Schmitting all over himself. Cultists, creeps, and weirdos, the whole lot of you cucks.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you take your meds already.
DeleteNo remote diagnoses @11:53, even for a relative.
DeleteHaha. Sucks to be you. Weirdos.
Delete11:45 Your comment is unhinged and illogical. You're ranting like a lunatic.
DeleteThis is what happens when you use political parties to fulfill your spiritual needs. Your life ends up sucking and you basically stop making sense to normal people who are not in the same cult as you.
A lack of a spiritual life, social media and blogs fucked you up. Bad.
6:20,
DeleteRepublicans are pieces of shit, even if there were no such thing as politics.
Who would behave the way Somerby does? Only someone as morally warped as Trump. Providing cover for assholes is not a good look for anyone but Trump's supporters reveal the same kind of laxness as the guy at the top.
ReplyDeleteEpstein may have done the trafficking, but his clients certainly enjoyed the girls he offered them. Then the envious wannabe players who surrounded that "class" covered up for them, because they would have jumped at the chance to be one of those criminal rapists themselves. And Somerby looks away while trying to distract us with tales of sacred Abraham Lincoln, as if any of his nobility would ever rub off on these right wing criminals. But he tries, because he too would have accepted an all-expenses paid trip to Epstein island if he had been lucky enough to join Epstein's crew, sipping wine and discussing whether sex with teens is "bred in the bone". So Somerby covers up for the higher ups who cover up for Trump and Epstein and their clientele, such as Bill Gates, who only dallied with "Russian women" who may or may not have had an STD.
Somerby doesn't care whether the nation heals. It is hard to identify anything he cares about, other than the topics he returns to almost daily (ancient Troy, My Antonia, hating on Rachel Maddow).
"Yesterday morning, we showed you the way the passage begins.
ReplyDeleteBefore the week is done, we'll show you where it goes next. "
Yay yay yay! Somerby is finally going to read beyond the first paragraph of one of his books.
"WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In an embarrassing attempt at a “gotcha” moment in Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) appeared to confuse his ass with a hole in the ground.
ReplyDeleteGrilling prosecutor Jack Smith, Schmitt barked, “Am I sitting over here on a hole in the ground? Yes or no answer.”
“No,” Smith calmly replied. “You’re sitting on your ass.”
The mix-up overshadowed an earlier goof by the committee chairman, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who seemingly mistook shit for Shinola."
Eric Schmitt his pants. Sad
DeleteJust yesterday, Schmitt displayed that he is as smart if not smarter than all the other Republican politicians put together.
DeleteIt still was infuriating reliving the horror of Jan 6 and knowing how the American people were denied the opportunity to see the evidence placed in front of a jury because of your corrupt Supreme Court and the hack judge who shielded baby huey in Florida.
DeleteA total Schmittshow. Fuck these unserious Nazi clowns. And Schmittface is a full on Nazi puke, not a poser, but the real deal. They are dumbSchmitts, but that doesn't make them less dangerous. These Nazi Schmidts need to be eradicated from our electoral system.
DeleteMental illness is not the only explanation for Trump's deviant behavior:
ReplyDelete"President Donald Trump exhibited "concerning behaviors" and symptoms on his right side during a recent public appearance, one psychologist noted in a new video, bearing an alarming resemblance to patients who have suffered a stroke.
Dr. John Paul Garrison is a clinical and forensic psychologist, with specific expertise in body language cues, who produces numerous videos offering professional insights into the behaviors of major public figures. Over the last few months, he has examined Trump during various speeches and appearances, noting many signs that point to significant neurological decline, even suggesting that he may have suffered a stroke sometime last year." [Alternet]
If Congress members and the right wing are willing to cover up actual crimes committed by congress members, why wouldn't they cover for Trump's mental illness, dementia or stroke, as long as it keeps them all in power? They have already shown that they have no limits when it comes to tolerating the misbehavior of political accomplices, as long as they keep greasing the right palms and scratching the right backs (figuratively speaking).
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't anyone talking about the obvious mental illness of John Fetterman? As long as he keeps flirting with Republicans, no one is going to seriously question his ability to function as a Senator. Perhaps it is time to enact a yearly mental competence test for everyone holding public office. That would catch problems like Mitch McConnell too.
Not an ageist, as I am an old. But why no fucking mandatory retirement age? Lot of office companies have it set at 71. That's enough already. Go home, join the Y, and enjoy some chair yoga and a cup of Joe for Christ sakes.
DeleteThere is no mandatory retirement age because different people age at different rates and decline from different baselines. People with early onset Alzheimer's show cognitive deficits and die at 50-60 yo. Not all jobs require mental sharpness. Not all olds have social security and can afford to support themselves without working.
DeleteAs for president, would you want to remove a president in the middle of a war (such as WWII) just because he or she became 70? There are truly awful presidents who served at much younger ages. It makes more sense to require health info to be revealed yearly and for Congress to use its power to remove an unfit president (or other person in office) when they meet specific criteria related to mental fitness.
That Montreal test that Trump keeps bragging about would be a suitable test for evaluating mental fitness, but Trump lies about his scores on it, along with misrepresenting what it is for (not IQ, but screening for cognitive impairment). Trump is obviously impaired and there is no way he is getting perfect scores on it.
For that matter, what is to prevent a president from simply lying about his age, as he does everything else?
Roosevelt should have quit in 1944.
DeleteRoosevelt became disabled at age 39. Should he have never run for office? He died of a stroke at age 63.
DeleteHe had hypertension and high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries, combined with physical exhaustion from serving as president through first The Great Depression and then WWII. In 1944, that war was still in progress. No one would seriously expect a president to stop working in the middle of a war, when continuity of effort, at a minimum, is important to victory.
Interestingly, Trump is taking medications for the same health issues that FDR died of. However, Trump clearly doesn't work as hard or have the weight of responsibility that FDR did.
Dewey ran against FDR. His qualifications were as Governor of New York, District Attorney and prosecutor of mobsters such as Lucky Luciano. Those are not relevant to conducting a war. In contrast, Truman had considerable congressional defense oversight experience, plus service in WWI, so it was lucky he was able to take over for FDR after his death.
George Marshall and Ernest King would have been a good ticket in 1944.
DeleteBeing good at conducting a war doesn't necessarily make someone good at being president. Eisenhower was an exception, in my opinion, perhaps because so much of his job was political. We have a historical hesitance to let military figures run a country because of the tendency of dictators to be former military leaders. We want to preserve our democracy, not necessarily make trains run on time, not that either of these two men had any sympathy for fascists, but because the command structure is so different in non-military contexts.
DeleteArguably they were both needed to continue fighting the war.
DeleteDwight Eisenhower and Chester Nimitz could have replaced George Marshall and Ernest King.
DeleteEisenhower was busy & needed elsewhere.
DeleteOmar Bradley could have replaced Eisenhower.
DeleteOff topic, but another man raped a woman.
ReplyDeleteHow long do we have to wait for men to be sent to Honduran gulags to protect our wives and daughters?
#mybrushisbroaderthanyours
The only reason Trump would send a rapist to a Honduran gulag is professional jealousy.
DeleteTrump is now paying the woman he raped the $5.9M he owes her for his crime. Any news when that asshole repeat rapist gets sent to Honduras jaggoff?
DeleteWhere's the Bob-Whisperer Calvary to the rescue?
ReplyDeleteCalvary to the rescue? Unusual theology.

DeleteBless his little Nazi heart.
DeleteThe funny people are those who disagreed with Karl.
DeleteSomerby is trying to portray our current problem as arising from a single demented man in the White House, but Trump would be much easier to cope with if therre were not an entire Republican party shielding him and enabling his insane acts. We would not be at war with Iran without Hegseth. Republicans are conducting the insane hearing against Jack Smith, for telling the truth about Trump's unfitness, his criminal acts during and following his first term. Our economy would not be going bust, inflation rising, our allies deserting us, if Republicans had not kowtowed to Trump's crazy tariffs, out-of-control spending on nonsense projects, and his sell-out of our nation to Russia and Putin. Xi is not our ally. Republicans do whatever silly thing Trump wants.
ReplyDeleteSo, our problem is not "healing" but removing the craven Republicans in Congress and Trump's cabinet, who would let a madman destroy our nation. There needs to be a massive cleaning house, because Trump is doing this by himself. We will need to reinstate the rule of law.
Always, and Everywhere, the Problem is The Others!
DeletePeople self-select as Republicans. We should trust their classification because they know themselves better than we ever could.
DeleteThis is tautological. Of course they are the problem. If they weren't doing what they do, there would be no problem. THEY voted for Trump. THEY refuse to do anything about Trump. THEY are OK with the awful and ridiculous things Trump does. How can THEY not be the problem? THEY are the problem by definition. If we behaved like them, then we would become the problem.

The falcon is the Other.
DeleteDemocrats can oppose Trump and Republican policies while also asking why tens of millions of ordinary people support them. And whether contemptuous descriptions of those voters make political persuasion easier or more difficult.
Delete(Some Democrats. Low IQ blogtards like MG are not intellectually capable of doing both.)
Delete"Democrats can oppose Trump and Republican policies while also asking why tens of millions of ordinary people support them."
DeleteYou see, some people already have. And they have concluded that those people are beyond persuasion at any price that makes persuasion politically profitable. Someone of your self-proclaimed IQ ought to have figured that out; the fact that you haven't ought to tell you there's a rather large gap between what you think your IQ is and what it actually is.
That's right! Not a single one of the Others is open to reason!

Really, it would. History is full of such things happening.
Everyone Everywhere Says the Same Things About the Others!
DeleteBut in Our case, it's True!
DeleteWe are terrible people, DG. Your esteemed host told us that. But please, don’t let’s say that the Others are terrible people. All they did was elect a mentally ill authoritarian who threatens untold dangers and they continue to worship him as a cult leader. A few of us care about trans people. Both sides, you see.
DeleteDogface George,
DeleteWhy is it you never call people names?
Is it your woeful lack of moral superiority, relative to the rest of the world?
Moral superiority has nothing to do with it, unless you're a dunce: it's an entirely practical matter. "Dogface George" is under the impression there are enough Trump dead-enders who can somehow be flipped, AND won't do so as long as you describe SOME of Trump's dead enders as bigots, to make describing SOME of Trump's dead-enders as bigots some kind of disastrously stupid thing to do. I think anyone who believes this is a self-deluding rube, more in love with scolding than understanding the electoral game, which has a lot of moving parts "Dogface George" -- and Somerby -- don't account for. No moral superiority involved. Intellectual superiority, maybe. Educational superiority, absolutely. But moral superiority has nothing to do with it, because it's for chumps.
DeleteMG displays enormous confidence that his political tribe has correctly identified the moral and intellectual defects of the other tribe, while apparently regarding skepticism about those judgments as foolish.
DeleteBy their final comment, they seem most concerned with defending the freedom to call Trump supporters bigots without being criticized for doing so:
"...defending the freedom to call Trump supporters bigots..."
DeleteWhat other reason would an imbecile vote for Trump other than Trump tickles their racist funny bone?
We all have our political hills to die on. For MG, theirs is the right to be able to blanket label scores of millions of people bigots. I have to admit, I don't really get it.
DeleteRepublicans voters political hill to die on is their public tolerance of child rape.
DeleteHow so?
DeleteWhen MG runs for office as a Democrat, let us know 9:08. Otherwise, notice the asymmetry in our political “discourse”: republican candidates and office holders constantly attack liberals, and not just liberal politicians, but liberal voters as well. Now look at the democratic candidates and office holders; they are not using this kind of rhetoric. At all. They almost invariably try to be inclusive, which is exactly the prescription that DG and all the other complainers here demand that Democrats do. It’s something they’re already doing!
DeleteThe argument is that liberals shouldn't casually characterize the opposing political population as stupid, racist, bigoted, etc., while assuming their own group has uniquely escaped the universal human tendency to caricature its political enemies.
DeleteI could see why you would want to change the subject to make it only about politicians.
It's a stupid argument. How many times do you people have to be told. Somerby and DG are wrong.
DeleteI think a lot of what Somerby writes is an application of Jesus’ teaching about removing the plank from our own eye. If we Blues want to change the direction of our country, perhaps we should begin by examining the counterproductive aspects of our own behavior.
Deletelol
DeleteAmen.
DeleteThomas Friedman has been a valued international expert columnist for many many decades. But, as we get old, we become less capable, as I can see from myself.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take an international expert to write a column full of the usual attacks on Donald Trump. This column lambastes Trump for not solving various international wars. The younger Friedman would have provided some insight into how these problems could be solved.
Problem solved by not voting for forever warmongering Republicans you silly dolt.
Delete@1:29 Are you saying that Israel and the Palestinians were at peace and good will when Biden and Obama were in office? No, the antipathy between those two groups has been there for a long time during Democratic and Republican Administrations. Having a Dem in office did not prevent the Palestinians' surprise attack on Israeli civilians.
DeleteTrump has a plan to create a long-term peace. That plan will probably not succeed. But, IMO Trump should not be faulted for trying.
"This column lambastes Trump for not solving various international wars."
DeleteClearly the columnist is unaware that in the fullness of time Day One will arrive, peace will reign down from heaven as the devil's minions are slaughtered with drone strikes from the Arc de Trump.
IMO Trump pulled off a coup by getting the Abraham Accords. I never thought I would see something like that in my lifetime
DeleteNow, I think there is a slim chance for real lasting peace throughout the middle east. All the countries seem ready for peace except for Iran and its proxies: Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. If the US succeeds in changing the Iranian government, the proxies will end their warfare.
This seems like a long shot, but it's not out of the question.
Yes, you've been enamored of the Abraham Accords for quite some time. Yet the signatories are Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, and then later Morocco and Sudan.
DeleteThe first three of these have never been at war with Israel while Sudan has been in a sort of formalistic or symbolic war, but with not much in the way of bullets going back and forth.
Yet you like to talk as if these Accords were earth-shaking in importance, when they clearly were not, leaving your readers to ponder why.
Biden had negotiated a plan that Trump disrupted (with Netanyahu) because he didn't want Biden to have that achievement before the election. The Republicans campaigned on the antisemitism of students and college administrations, splitting Democrats over Israel and Gaza. He obtained the release of the remaining hostages (138).

DeleteFrom the day Israel was founded in 1948, its neighbors tried to destroy it. But, having a modern, highly technical neighbor should be a big asset to these countries. They can benefit from trade and communications with a high developed neighbor. There's no reason why they need to be enemies.
It is my hope that as other middle eastern countries see how much benefit the Abraham Accord countries are getting from relationships with Israel then these other countries will seek warmer relationships with Israel.
Explain Sunni Shia you stupid DiC, and how your nonsense fits now that your President has started WWIII?
DeleteStarting a world war may not always be bad. It can be an enormous boon to humanity, in some circumstances, compared to the alternative. If Neville Chamberlain and FDR had attacked Germany in 1935,. they would have started WW2 and saved tens of millions of lives. Of course, there would have been no way to know how many lives were saved. People like @5:17 would have blamed FDR and Chamberlain.
DeleteToday there is a government so evil that they casually murdered 40,000 of their own citizens who were merely demonstrating in the street. What would these people do with nuclear weapons? Nobody knows. Barack Obama gave them a fortune to delay the acquisition of such weapons. Trump is seeking the same goal via war and economic pressure. I hope he succeeds.
If FDR had attacked Germany in 1935 he would have got a lot of American soldiers killed and accomplished nothing.

Delete"Barack Obama gave them a fortune to delay the acquisition of such weapons."
DeleteObama gave them nothing but sanctions relief, you lying, shit eating fraud.
Obama gave them the money of theirs that had been held by the US since before their revolution plus the interest accrued on it over decades. The issue of how many dollars in interest was owed would have gone to international arbitration and there was a high likelihood that the amount settled on by arbitration would have been significantly larger than the 1.7 billion dollars decided upon by US negotiators with Iran. It is typical right wing bullshit to suggest that the money exchanged was some kind of gift to Iran, as DiC either ignorantly or purposefully does here.
Delete"...as DiC either ignorantly or purposefully does here."
DeleteOn the one hand, David is a standard-issue ignorant Republican voter.

Those who still cling to him, like Somerby’s own DiC, reject any discussions in any mainstream news outlets that Trump is mentally unwell. Again, until right wing news organizations hold these discussions, not much will change.
Interesting to note that Tucker Carlson says Trump should be removed via the 25th amendment. Does he, like Somerby, understand that Trump is bad for Republican branding?
