WEDNESDAY: He's never seen them quite so happy!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2026

Also, an apparent ongoing decline: Dear persons! This site covers the mainstream press corps' various organs. Nathan Pemberton, late of the New York Times, "writes about influence and the new right."

In a new guest essay for the Times, Pemberton describes the world's oldest obsession as displayed by the online right. Angry boys and boy-men have never been so happy, he says.

Headline included, his essay starts like this:

I Have Never Seen the Online Right So Happy

The online right has that old spring in its step. The infighting brought on by President Trump’s chaotic second-term agenda has settled down, and the anonymous accounts have been posting at a furious clip. What is the source of this newfound unity? The accusations brought by Jane Doe against seven men at Cornell have given the online right what it’s been missing most: a woman to hate on.

The social media celebrities and talking heads of the right have jumped at the chance to pick apart Jane Doe’s allegations of a gang rape—labeling it a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.” Unable to dispute the basic narrative of the assault, including a lurid fraternity group chat, they’ve elected to argue that Jane Doe is the actual aggressor, a once-willing participant in sexual debauchery now seeking vengeance against her hapless partners.

Her most hostile critics on the right have sought to portray Jane Doe as a kind of out-of-control sexual fiend or “super slut,” as the conspiracist Alex Jones has labeled her. Not content to simply degrade her, Nick Fuentes, the white nationalist streamer and self-proclaimed virgin, has used the Cornell case as an opportunity to espouse his vision of male dominance by suggesting not only that Jane Doe should be “put in jail” but that he would “absolutely beat” a woman who behaved like her.

And so on from there.

As a general matter, we don't follow those celebrities and talking heads ourselves. Sadly, we don't find it hard to believe Pemberton's observations.

(Also, brace yourselves, then help yourselves to Megyn Kelly's analysis of the Cornell matter, as excerpted by Mediaite. Don't forget to brace yourselves before you see what she wrote.)

On the presidential end, the apparent cognitive decline seems to be more obvious than ever—almost, it seems, on a daily basis. At Mediaite, Kathryn Wilkens starts a new report like this:

Trump Explains Sizing Up ‘Ass’ of Republican Senator: ‘I’m Studying His Body’

President Donald Trump offered an eyebrow-raising explanation for why he was examining the “ass” of Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH), insisting he was “studying his body.”

Trump’s first reference to Husted’s “ass” came during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, last week, when he gleefully told the crowd he had begun “examining” Husted’s body after recently learning that the senator was a former All-American defensive back at the University of Dayton.

“I looked, and I watched up and down. I looked at his ass, and I looked at the whole– and then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He’s got these, like, claws,” the president marveled on Oct. 12.

The comments about Senator Husted's physical person have traveled with Trump to other states in the week since then. As reported by Wilkens, here's what he told a rally gathering yesterday, this time in North Carolina:

So, he’s over here. I’m over here, and I’m studying his body. I’ve never studied the body of a man before. It’s not my thing. Nothing wrong with it—of course. [laughs] I always precede it by saying, “Nothing wrong,” but it’s never been my thing, to be honest with you.

But I looked at his ass, and then I looked at his legs. I said, “His ass, sh*t, it’s like, it’s like a pile of muscle.” Then I looked at his legs, and I said, “Man, his feet are big.” Then I looked at his shoulders, and I tapped him on the shoulder, and it actually hurt my hand. He’s like a piece of steel. I said, “This guy’s a monster!”

In this way, he hoped to help the Republican Party win the North Carolina Senate race.

As we always tell you, serious cognitive decline is a human tragedy. It's a tragic loss of human capability which can hit friend or foe, loved one or rank stranger.

In this case, the sitting president's powerful position would make some such decline a major societal danger.

We wait and we wait, then we wait and we wait, for some major journalist or major news org to interview major medical specialists about the apparent change in capacity which seems to be right there before us.

What will it take before our major Blue American orgs choose to serve—before they choose to report, in a serious way, on the apparent state of the world?

GENDER: She was 12, and her brother was 9!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2026

Ramaswamy moves in: Last evening, we were negatively impressed by the way Anderson Cooper reported the basic facts of the case—by the initial way he presented the latest appalling events from the gubernatorial race in Ohio.

When Lauren Fox reported live and direct from that state, her performance wasn't much better.

Later in the segment, it fell to former Republicans Gretchen Carlson and Alyssa Farah Griffin to build appropriate context around the appalling behaviors at issue. Freed up now to express his personal view of the events in question, Cooper also joined in.

There was no dispute about the squalor of the campaign ad at issue:

COOPER (10/20/26): I do want to just talk to the panel about this. I mean, this has got to be the most disgusting ad I've seen.

GRIFFIN: Honestly, the grossest ad I can think of. I was racking my brain for something worse. I don't—anyone behind it should be ashamed.

[...]

CARLSON: In the last ten years since MeToo has come to life, and as somebody who works in the sexual assault space, I've never seen anything like this.

On this morning's Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski spoke with outrage but also with control about the events in question:

"When you look at the whole story, it’s almost hard to believe how depraved this effort is," she said. Speaking of the campaign which created the ad, she added this:

“There seems to be no lie too ugly for them. No trauma they won’t weaponize. No line they won’t cross for power.”

But then, increasingly so it goes inside this endangered nation.

David Gilmour provides videotape of Brzezinski's full remarks in this report for Mediaite. (Three cheers for David Gilmour!) The headline on his report reads like this:

‘As Sick as It Gets!’ Mika Brzezinski ‘Shook’ By Ramaswamy’s ‘Depraved’ Attempt to ‘Dirty Up’ Rival with Her Past Trauma

For the New York Times account of this matter, you can just click here.

The background to this event looks like this:

Dr. Amy Acton, 60 years old, is the Democratic Party's nominee in the current race for governor of Ohio. She's a former director of the Ohio Department of Health.

Dr. Acton has earned the right to be held in high regard. It isn't clear that her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, still just 41 years of age, rises to that level at this point in his noisy, loud, boisterous life.

The backstory here involves a basic set of facts. We're sorry to report this fact:

Dr. Acton's stepfather was indicted for raping her when she was 12 years old. (And yes, that's right—indicted.) We'll let this Associated Press report present the other basic facts about Ramaswamy's appalling new ad—and yes, that astonishing headline is accurate:

Ramaswamy takes responsibility for ad with Amy Acton’s mother and will spend millions to promote it

[...]

The advertisement features Acton’s birth mother, Donna Arthur, calling her “a liar” and insinuating she has mental health issues. Acton, Ohio’s former public health director, has made no secret of facing homelessness and abuse as a child. Arthur lost custody of her children after their stepfather was indicted for raping Acton.

[...]

Acton spent Tuesday condemning Ramaswamy for the ad even before his campaign confirmed its provenance.

“I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about, who today just released an ad using my birth mother, who I was removed from at the age of 12 for severe abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse,” she told Spectrum News, a cable news outlet in Ohio.

[...]

Acton’s campaign released a statement from her brother, Philip Stearns, who said the two were removed from their mother Donna Arthur’s custody as children after their stepfather, Arthur’s husband, was indicted for raping Acton as a child. Acton has not seen Arthur, whose last known address was in Pennsylvania, since they were in a courtroom together in 1978.

Later Tuesday, the Acton campaign released a video featuring Stearns, who recalls his older sister taking “the worst” of the abuse they faced as children in order to protect him and disparages Ramaswamy and his allies for exploiting the situation.

According to police and court documents obtained by The Associated Press, Cledith Arthur was arrested and charged with the rape of his stepdaughter, then 12, in July 1978, after Acton’s biological father reported him to authorities. The abuse allegedly happened from December 1976 to April 1978.

Cledith Arthur pleaded not guilty. He was indicted by a grand jury that September, but failed to show at a court hearing and remained a fugitive until at least 1981. He has since died.

Out of the gloaming came the man Ramaswamy, running well behind in the polls and hoping to turn things around.

Pity the state of Ohio! In 2024, it was Ohio which JD Vance used at the set for his astonishing claim—he later acknowledged that he'd known it was false—that Haitian guest workers were eating one city's pet cats and dogs.

This week, along comes this other being with this ugly, deranged campaign ad.

That said, our nation exists in a world of such hurt in this, the age of Trump. And that president; whose behavior is plainly stranger by the day, is going to be in office for two more years plus two more months after the events of November 3.

“I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about," Acton said.

Last evening, on a Fox News Channel "cable news" program, a 61-year-old San Mateo boy—a San Mateo child who has long needed help—decided to offer this otherwise puzzling joke:

GUTFELD (10/20/26): A new study shows that children who grew up with positive experiences have a lower risk of depression when they get older.

And an earlier study shows that children who grew up with negative experiences should just keep their traps shut.

We don't know why this misogyny-adjacent nutcase decided to go with this "joke." Is he nutty enough to have been aiming at Acton?

Yes, he actually is—and no one in all of Blue America is willing to discuss what he and his various stooges do on his nightly primetime program.

Our country currently lives in a world of deeply threatening hurt. The people who get sold to us Blues as reporters and commentators are an ongoing part of this problem.

GENDER: Sitting president tells a tale...

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2026

...of 125 different genders: Yes, these things actually happened.

We'll start with some of the president's new claims concerning matters of gender. We'll be remembering, as we've done in the past, that gender and sexuality have always been challenging for us humans to deal with.

We'll start the with president's Truth Social post before yesterday's rally in Kansas. In his post, he made endless claims about Adam Hamilton, the Democratic Party's nominee for Senator Roger Marshall's Kansas Senate seat

He made a series of very strange claims. Some claims dealt with gender:

Truth Details

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

Senator Roger Marshall’s opponent, Adam Hamilton, is a Radical Left Phony who is pretending to be a moderate because he does not have the courage to tell Kansas the truth about who he really is. Hamilton opposed my Travel Ban to keep Terrorists and Extremists out of our Country. He supports flooding Kansas with unvetted refugees from the most dangerous places on earth. Adam Hamilton used church dollars to fund anti-religious transgender activists who openly mock Jesus. He promotes a document listing 125 different genders, and directs his followers to 7 different websites to make children transgender. Adam Hamilton stated that he believes America is systemically racist. He said that white people must “repent” for being white, and that Kansans should repent for eating beef because you are causing global warming. He donated to Kamala Harris, Crooked Joe Biden, and Barack Hussein Obama and, very importantly, Adam Hamilton wants to take away your guns...

That's the first half of the lengthy screed. To peruse the full post, you can just click here.

Now it's time for a question:

According to the leading authority, here's a bit of background on the Democratic nominee. Are you sure that this person has chosen to "openly mock Jesus in the manner described?

Adam Hamilton (pastor)

Adam Joseph Hamilton (born July 12, 1964) is an American Christian theologian, minister, and author. He is senior pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, the largest United Methodist congregation in the United States, based in the Greater Kansas City area.

Raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Hamilton graduated with a bachelor's degree from Oral Roberts University in pastoral ministry and a Master of Divinity from the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. He has written more than 30 books about Christian faith, biblical hermeneutics, and contemporary issues. His video-based lessons for Sunday school classes are widely used by Protestant Christians in the United States for instruction in the faith.

Hamilton is the Democratic nominee in the 2026 United States Senate election in Kansas.

[...]

Hamilton is founding pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. The church began in 1990 with a few people meeting in a small chapel at a local funeral home and grew into the largest United Methodist congregation in the United States. It has an average weekly attendance of about 25,000 across its nine locations and its online and televised services.

[...]

Hamilton says the Bible is inspired by God and that God speaks through scripture, and he defends the Thirty-nine Articles' confession that "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation." In accordance with neo-orthodox theology, he rejects both theological liberalism and fundamentalism. In biblical hermeneutics, he supports the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, affirming that reason, revelation, and experience take precedence over tradition. His preaching states that Jesus is the only means by which humanity can be reconciled with God and leaves open the possibility that individuals may be saved in extraordinary circumstances...Those who reject it in knowledge of its validity are condemned.

We don't share this candidate's religious / cosmological beliefs. But do you feel sure that he has been openly mocking Jesus by doing such things as "promot[ing] a document listing 125 different genders," or by "direct[ing] his followers to 7 different websites to make children transgender?"

Here on this campus, we watch the Fox News Channel more than most Blue Americans do. Watching extremely peculiar programs like Gutfeld!, we're struck by the extent to which MAGA anger is fueled by issues involving gender—by attitudes which seem to involve the loathing of women, but also by constant focus on transgender topics.

Issues of sexuality and gender have always been hard. Last night, at his rally, the sitting president did in fact keep playing these highly emotional themes.

For the full transcript, just click here. This very morning, videotape of much of this was seen on Morning Joe:

PRESIDENT TRUMP (10/19/26):  In 15 days, we're going to reelect Roger Marshall, one of the greatest. And we're going to defeat the Communists, the jihadists, and the corrupt anti-American lunatics once and for all. We're gonna put them back. We've gotta set them back, gotta hit them hard.

So Roger's opponent— I did a lot of work on this... So I understand what I'm saying.

Adam Hamilton used to say, like, bad things about me, really radical left things. I mean, he would talk like— I said, "This guy's a radical left lunatic."

...I didn't know. I'd never thought he'd be running for office, but I used to hear about this lunatic up here. I said, "What the hell is he doing in Kansas?"

But he'd say bad crap about me. And I don't like—I don't like people that do that. But he's a radical left phony who's pretending to be a moderate because he does not have the courage to tell Kansas the truth about his belief and really who he is.

Hamilton opposed my travel ban to keep terrorists and extremists out of our country, and he was vicious about it. What kind of a president would want to keep killers, thugs, lunatics—but he didn't say that—out of our country? [sic]

He supports flooding Kansas with unvetted refugees who go around killing people literally for no reason.

[Audience boos]

And they come in. He says it's okay for people to come in. From the most dangerous places on earth, they can pour into Kansas.

Adam Hamilton used church dollars to fund anti-religious transgender activity—activities.

[Audience boos]

I mean. And so, he used a lot of church money to fund all of this transgender crap that you're reading about, who openly mocks Jesus and he openly mocks Jesus. He promotes a document listing 125 different genders—you think Talafreako's bad, he was only six—and directs his followers to seven different websites to make children transgender.

He believes in letting children and making children transgender. Do you know that? I mean, I'm not saying this just out of the blue...

With respect to gender fury, it was the same stuff from his Truth Social post, with "Talafreako" thrown in. In short, our nation's in a very dangerous world of very serious hurt.

Tomorrow, we hope to return to what Shane Gillis said on SNL—to the way the stooges on The Five pretended to handle the topic.

Tomorrow: Even Jessica Tarlov complies

MONDAY: Sitting president confronts crazed lunatic!

MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2026

The problem we all face: Yes, it's an actual post.

Even worse, it's an actual Truth Social post, from the sitting president. NBC's Channel 4 in Washington, D.C. provides the basic background:

East Potomac golf course closure and overhaul will start ‘immediately,' Trump says

President Donald Trump on Monday said his plans to close a historic public golf course in the nation's capital for 15 months and redevelop it despite an ongoing court challenge to his long-sought renovation will begin "IMMEDIATELY!"

Trump posted on social media on Sunday about his intent to shutter the East Potomac Golf Course, not far from the White House, starting Nov. 15 to make it “one of the Best and Most Spectacular Golf Courses anywhere in the World.”

A judge last week, however, ordered a halt to his redevelopment plans until at least Oct. 26 after scolding the government for starting a large-scale tree removal at the course over a holiday weekend while providing little notice to the court or the plaintiffs trying to stop the makeover.

Trump did not acknowledge the legal fight in his initial post, but early Monday morning he took to Truth Social again, calling the judge "a crazed lunatic."

And so on from there.

This may seem like a hill of beans compared to the president's apparent tilt in the direction of trying to let Vladimir Putin achieve his conquest of Ukraine. The president's recent behaviors in that arena are being condemned by observers from all sides of all aisles.

Compared to that onrushing disaster, this act of large-scale tree removal will likely seem less important. But here's the sitting president's complete Truth Social post:

Truth Details

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

The United States Department of Interior wants to take a terrible and very unsafe golf course, and make it into a great, safe, and prestigious golf course. They have an absolute right to do so. It’s as simple as that! The judge on the case is a crazed lunatic whose courthouse tapes will reveal, may be insane? The tapes have been blocked from usage by the judge. The random golfer bringing the ridiculous lawsuit has ZERO STANDING! The experts at “Interior” are allowed to do this First Class renovation “as of right.” [sic] They do not need an approval. Work is scheduled to begin IMMEDIATELY! The finished product will be World Class, and bring income and great prestige back to D.C. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT

Oct 19, 2026, 6:08 AM

Were sorry, but no! Judge Ana C. Reyes shows no sign of being "a crazed lunatic whose courthouse...may be insane."

Under an alternate reading of the garbled post, Judge Reyes also shows no sign of being insane herself.

No, Virginia and the entire D.C. region: the judge doesn't seem to be crazed in the slightest. But the president who issued that post will be free to behave any way he pleases on the international stage for two more years and two more months after November 3.

In short, it's a dangerous time here in our struggling nation.

GENDER: Should he have said what he said?

MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2026

Shane Gillis host SNL: Should Shane Gillis have said it?

Gillis is a somewhat / fairly well-known comedian of the occasionally controversial kind. He's 38 years old as we speak.

On October 10 of this very year, his guest host stint on Saturday Night Live produced one such public discussion. Three days later, NBC News published this report about one part of the backlash against the gentleman's opening monologue on the well-known NBC program:

Former ‘SNL’ star Ego Nwodim mocks Shane Gillis monologue about women’s gym outfits

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Ego Nwodim appeared to respond to Shane Gillis’ controversial monologue from his latest hosting stint Saturday, during which he said that women who wear short shorts to the gym are dressing like “whores.”

“Whore reporting for duty,” Nwodim captioned an Instagram story Monday that featured a photo of her in the gym wearing black leggings, a black long-sleeved shirt and a black baseball hat.

She then posted a photo of her post-workout meal, writing, “Getting my 30 grams of protein in after heauxing,” with “heauxing” being slang for “whoring.”

Gillis’ monologue garnered backlash online in the days since, with people calling the raunchy comedian “tone-deaf” for making a comment about women’s bodies, especially as the country reckons with the scandal over an alleged sexual assault at Cornell University.

Say what? He said that women who wear short shorts to the gym are dressing like “whores?”

In the most obvious sense, we'd have to say that the answer is yes. In the most obvious sense, that's a fair account of what the host seems to have said.

You can watch his seven-minute opening monologue just by clicking here. Shortly after the two-minute mark, these were the comments in question:

“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now. Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe-- Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts? Have you seen the shorts? Those neon, they're like artificial bait-colored, and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole.
“And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look...”

That was the passage in question. For ourselves, we haven't seen it. (We haven't been to the gym since  the days when Covid began.)

If we assume that he was reporting his real experience, Gillis said that he has.

The gentleman said that he's seen it, but is it actually true? Is it true that "women"—All women? Some women? A handful of women? Two women he saw in one gym?—are actually dressing like whores?

How many women are dressing like whores? Gillis didn't say. Beyond that, a second question arises:

Is there really "no other way to describe [it]," because that's what the fellow seems to have said. Is there  no other way to describe it, or is Gillis simply a comic of the type described by Emma Specter at the start of this opinion column for Vogue?

I Am So Over Comics Who Simply Don’t Like Women

Being a stand-up comedy fan since childhood has often been an exercise in disassociation.

Watching specials by Louis C.K. and Bill Burr and Ricky Gervais on my mom’s work computer late at night, I learned to put space between myself and “other women”—that is, the women those comics took aim at. “Other” women were silly, flighty, embarrassing, annoying (such as those referenced in Burr’s 2017 riff about how there’s “plenty of reasons to hit a woman…you just don’t do it”). When I grew up, I vowed, I would be a Gone Girl-style Cool Girl, one who made the jokes instead of suffering them.

As I got older, however, I discovered new comedian lodestars. I delighted in John Mulaney and Nick Kroll embodying Upper West Side alter kaker in Oh, Hello, and Conner O’Malley doing bizarre performance art as the fake tech entrepreneur Richard Eagleton. Not all of their material was inherently feminist or affirming, but at least I could watch it without being distracted by basic misogyny disguised as “edgy humor.”

Sadly, those who tuned in to Saturday Night Live over the weekend got just that. “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now,” host Shane Gillis said during his opening monologue. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]..."

And so on from there. In Specter's view, Gillis had offered basic misogyny disguised as “edgy humor." He was a comic who simply doesn’t like women.

As she proceeded, Specter quoted Dan Levy, who said this In a video later posted to Instagram:

“Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists.”

In that way, the name-calling continued.

No people are uninteresting, the Soviet and Russian poet Yevtushenko once said, and we've long affirmed his claim. That said, in our view, some people who think of themselves as men have been slow to relinquish the desire to exercise control over the people they think of as women.

As we've noted in the past few years, this control is driving the action at the start of the Iliad, at the dawn of European literature. The problem begins when Agamemnon, lord of men, is told he has to relinquish Chryseis, the teenage girl he has stolen from her father, a priest to Apollo.

The lord of men is deeply offended. He's reported to have said this:

The girl—I won't give up the girl. Long before that,
old age will overtake her in my house, in Argos,
far from her fatherland. slaving back and forth
at the loom, forced to share my bed!

In the end, he does "give up the girl." As compensation, he takes Achilles' "prize," the teenage girl Briseis, triggering the rage of that greatest warrior.

The attitude lodged in that famous war poem has never quite gone away. Today, the attitude can be found all over the Fox News Channel, but also out in major regions of the Bro Terrain.

It's met with complete and total silence from Blue America's major camps.

Tomorrow: On The Five, even Tarlov buys it

SATURDAY: Shine on me, sunshine? Walk with me, world?

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2026

The president gay-baits Ossoff: We want to show you two bits of text from last night's Anderson Cooper program on CNN.

In this, the first of these clips, the president is gay-baiting Senator Ossoff. Cooper is speaking with Tim Pawlenty, the former (Republican) governor of Minnesota, a person who never engaged in this kind of conduct:

COOPER (10/16/26): Governor Pawlenty, I just want to play another part of the president's speech in Georgia today.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (videotape): I call him Pee-Wee Herman. Pee-Wee Herman, he looks like Pee-Wee. His name is Jon Ossoff, highly overrated.

Somebody said he's a good-looking man. I don't think he's a good-looking man. I actually think Mike Collins is a good-looking man. And he's all man. He's all man. I'm not sure about Ossoff.

If I am casting a movie for a senator, I like the white hair. I like the big, strong build, big, strong guy. But that's what I want. But he's a respected man.

COOPER: I'm not sure what he was insinuating about Ossoff, but why does he keep commenting on men's appearances? I mean, it's sort of fascinating to me.

PAWLENTY: You know, he says all kinds of things that are sort of entertaining. But you know what the voters want to hear is what's going on with my pocketbook, what's going on with affordability, what's going on in the economy...

Obviously, Cooper knew what the president was saying about Ossoff. (Pawlenty also avoided the obvious.) Next week, we expect to note the way this sort of thing is currently driving so much of MAGA (and Fox News Channel) politics.

In this, the second clip, the president is Muslim-baiting Abdul El-Sayed. Cooper is speaking with Lulu Garcia-Navarro of the New York Times:

COOPER: And Lulu, I want to play you something else the president said today about Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (videotape): He's as bad almost as Mohamed Abdul El-Sayed.

You know, I took a lot of heat for calling him "Mohamed." And I said, I don't care, I'm the president of the United States. I can call you whatever the hell I want. I can call you whatever I want, Mohamed.

And then today, a guy sends me something. His name is actually "Abdullah bah-bah-bah-bah-bah"—Mohammed El-Sayed. So, his middle name is Mohamed. So, I was right, almost.

Oh, by the way, how about that guy? He's a Jihadist. He's a radical left person. He hates our country.

COOPER: How do you think? I mean, do you think that works for the people he wants to turn out?

GARCIA-NAVARRO: No, I mean, I think it's racist, obviously. He's using "Mohamed" as a sort of slur, when it's the name of the prophet and for Muslims. And then beyond that, it's just more of the same...

By any normal standard, that was astonishing conduct by the sitting president.

It was obvious Muslim-baiting. We were struck by the fact that Cooper was only willing to fashion a question as to whether this obvious baiting would "work."

(In response, we wouldn't have used the highly general term "racist" ourselves.)

By the way, here's a quick thumbnail of the man who was being baited by our sitting president—the man who hates our country:

Abdul El-Sayed

Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed (born October 31, 1984) is an American epidemiologist and politician who is the Democratic nominee in the 2026 United States Senate election in Michigan.

Born and raised in southeast Michigan, El-Sayed graduated from the University of Michigan and was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, where he earned a doctorate in public health. He then earned his medical degree from Columbia University. He then became an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Columbia University School of Public Health. He was the executive director of the Detroit Health Department from 2015 to 2017. From 2023 to 2025, he served as director of the Wayne County Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services.

[...]

In 2003, El-Sayed graduated from Bloomfield Hills Andover High School, where he was a three-sport athlete and captain of the wrestling, football, and lacrosse teams. He then attended the University of Michigan...He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest distinction in 2007 with a bachelor's degree and gave that year's student commencement speech.

Once captain of his high school's football team, he hates the U.S. today! Along somewhat similar lines, here is some background on Ossoff, whose background is not widely known:

Jon Ossoff

Thomas Jonathan Ossoff (born February 16, 1987) is an American politician who has served as the senior United States senator from Georgia since 2021. He is the youngest incumbent U.S. senator, and a member of the Democratic Party.

[...]

He attended The Paideia School, a private school in Atlanta. While in high school, he interned for civil rights leader and U.S. representative John Lewis. Ossoff is a 2009 graduate of Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service with a Bachelor of Science degree in culture and politics. He earned a master of science degree in international political economy from the London School of Economics in 2013.

[...]

Ossoff is married to Alisha Kramer, an obstetrics and gynecology doctor at Emory University, where she completed her residency in 2023, and a graduate of Georgetown University and Emory University School of Medicine. Ossoff married Kramer in 2017 after 12 years of dating. On the night of Ossoff's election to the United States Senate in January 2021, Kramer was working an overnight shift in Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. They have two daughters, born in December 2021 and June 2025.

Just a guess: Those two girls got a very good deal when the gods selected their parents.

At any rate, despite the president's recent gay-bating, Ossoff doesn't seem to be gay. Of course, as (almost) everyone knows by now, many millions of good, decent people are.  And we don't have a person to waste, as Bill Clinton used to say.

In recent weeks, the gay-baiting and the Muslim baiting have been general over MAGA elites and the Fox News Channel. With respect to that sad situation, we speak to this obvious question:

Shine on me, sunshine? Walk with me, world? What the heck's up with that?

Our record-shattering answer:

We Americans can't fact-check or name-call our way back out of our current national mess—"back out of all this now too much for us," as Frost confusingly had it.

Instead, we'll need to emerge into a world of deepened American values—some of them seeming to be a bit Reddish, some of them tilting toward Blue.

We need a deeper connection to happiness. More on that to follow.

HAPPINESS: Scarborough savages Donald J. Trump!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2026

In search of a citizen's duty: We saw it this morning on Morning Joe, in the program's first half hour. We want to compliment David Gilmour of Mediaite for presenting tape and a transcript so quickly.

Joe Scarborough went right at it! He assailed the way the sitting president has now decided to play a role in "the killing of grandmothers"—but also in the killing of children and the killing of innocents in general.

He made reference to a Reuters report which appears beneath this headline:

Order to limit Starshield for Ukraine came from inside White House, sources say

Are the sources right this time? Scarborough assumes that they are. Meanwhile, back at Mediaite, Gilmour's summary of the Reuters report can be perused by clicking here.

In this follow-up report, Gilmour posts the videotape from today's Morning Joe. Headline included, Gilmour's report starts like this:

Scarborough Shreds Trump’s ‘Absolute Betrayal’ of Ukraine: ‘In Bed with Vladimir Putin’

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough tore into President Donald Trump over what he called the “absolute betrayal” of Ukraine, accusing the president of siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin as Washington eases pressure on Moscow and restricts satellite capabilities used by Ukrainian forces.

The host launched into the blistering monologue on [Friday] amid rapidly deteriorating relations between Washington and Kyiv, declaring: “I just can’t get Ukraine off my mind and the absolute betrayal of Ukraine.”

Gilmour's report continues from there. On the accompanying videotape, Scarborough is shown saying this on this morning's program as he speaks with Ed Luce of the Financial Times:

SCARBOROUGH (10/16/26): I just can’t get Ukraine off my mind and the absolute betrayal of Ukraine.

The whole world is rising up against Donald Trump’s just outrageous embrace of Vladimir Putin’s killing machine. The fact that he’s doing diesel deals to pump billions of dollars into Vladimir Putin’s killing machine. The fact that we have reports from Reuters, last night, that it was the White House that ordered the Pentagon to slow down the Starlink satellites, to make sure that Russia’s fastest, deadliest missiles could get into Kyiv and kill grandmothers, kill children, kill grandfathers, kill innocents.

That’s all in Donald Trump’s hands. He’s the one in charge of this, and you see leaders from across the world speaking out against Donald Trump, I would say, getting in bed with Vladimir Putin, but he never really got out, did he?

[...]

These events are shocking even by Trumpian standards. He's doing everything he can to help Vladimir Putin win this war. Why?

On the videotape, Luce tries to answer Scarborough's question. As before, so too today—we compliment Scarborough for creating the most intelligent discussions in all of daily cable news, largely through the participation of an array of highly informed guests like Luce.

(Richard Haass was also involved in this morning's discussion.)

On this morning's program, Scarborough was discussing a hugely important, if puzzling, policy choice by the sitting president. Increasingly, there's also the endless array of gratuitous insults delivered by Trump, along with his weird (if inconsequential) public statements and Truth Social posts.

Last night, Lawrence O'Donnell was walking that second beat. As he frequently does, he derided the president for "the utterly insane, breathtakingly stupid things he says every day." He attributed this undeniable state of affairs to the sitting president's "declining cognitive ability," his "cognitive decline."

Is it true? Is the most powerful person in the world experiencing a cognitive decline—even a significant cognitive decline? As we've noted many times, here's what his niece, the doctorate-holding clinical therapist, said on CNN earlier this year.

For the record, the key words here is "untreated:"

ERIN BURNETT (2/26/26): You've known him your whole life. Do you actually see a decline?

MARY TRUMP: I do, but I think it's important to remember that Donald has never been fit in any capacity. Obviously, what we're dealing with now are age-related cognitive declines. We're dealing with physical issues that the White House tries to cover over.

But this is somebody who for decades now has had serious, undiagnosed and untreated psychiatric disorders, which are only going to worsen, especially given the pressure he's under and given the cognitive and physical declines.

The key word there is "untreated." Mary Trump was describing a serious set of medical conditions which have gone untreated.

As for O'Donnell, he now refuses (or isn't allowed) to bring medical specialists onto his show to offer an informed assessment. Instead, he is inclined to offer his own home brew of diagnosis, larded with personal insults.

That leaves us with Bill Maher's claim, which we've discussed in the past few days. "What, me honor my citizen's duty?" he almost seems to have said.

Fellow citizens, why does our sitting president behave so strangely, even reaching to the point described this morning by Scarborough? This is what Bill said:

"I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer.”

We'd call that a very strange statement. We'd say it's his place to try. We'd say it's his duty as an American citizen, as a citizen of the world.

Bill interviews guests with a wide array of specialties. In our view, it's his duty as a citizen to interview medical specialists about the president's odd behaviors—odd behaviors which may spill over into the killing of children.

We vastly admire Bill's achievements, and Bill is hardly alone in the stance he's adopted here. There is no major Blue American journalist or media figure who hasn't run away from the question Bill seemed to regard as none of his freaking business.

The president's behavior has become stranger and stranger. Every journalist has taken a dive concerning what's right there before them.

What does this have to do with happiness. you might ask at this point. Also, how about the state of mind Thoreau described at the start of his chapter called Solitude?

With that, you're asking an excellent question. We'll address that question in the weeks ahead as we thrash about at this site, looking for amended ways which may let our nation survive.

THURSDAY: Peltola returns to The Last Word!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2026

New York Times gone wild: We were glad to see Mary Peltola back on last evening's Last Word.

Previously, she had appeared on the show on September 9. The following day, we gave you this basic background:

Mary Peltola

Mary Sattler Peltola (born August 31, 1973) is an American politician and former tribal judge. She served as the U.S. representative from Alaska's at-large congressional district from 2022 to 2025.

A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as a judge on the Orutsararmiut Native Council's tribal court, was executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, Bethel city councilor, and member of the Alaska House of Representatives...

Peltola was first elected to Congress in an August 2022 special election after the death of incumbent Don Young...

Peltola was re-elected to a full term in 2022. She lost re-election in 2024 to Nick Begich III. She is a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2026, challenging incumbent senator Dan Sullivan.

In politics as in various branches of show business, the smile can be a powerful weapon. We're not sure we've ever seen a political candidate who defaults to such an array of smiles.  To see her session on last night's Last Word, you can just click this.

With control of the Senate at stake, we're praying for Candidate Peltola. Weirdly, though, the New York Times, for whatever reason, came up with this somewhat peculiar front-page report on September 25:

TIMES EXCLUSIVE
Angry Outbursts, Slurs and Firings: Tumult Rocks a Key Senate Campaign

National Democrats cheered when Mary Peltola, the former Alaska congresswoman, declared in January that she would run for the Senate.

Ms. Peltola, an Alaska Native who grew up fishing for salmon on the Kuskokwim River, was well-known and well-liked statewide, even by Republicans. Her party hailed her as one of its strongest prospects for ousting a Republican incumbent and winning control of the Senate.

But behind the scenes, her political operation has been marked by tumult, a pattern that stretches back to her time in Congress. Former aides describe angry and profane outbursts, sometimes directed at aides and sometimes expressed about others who had displeased her. In one instance, she shoved an aide, according to a former staff member who was present and two others who were told about it at the time. Another conflict led to a surprising staff shake-up on the eve of the primary election last month.

And so on from there. Meanwhile, no one has it but the Times? There may be a very good reason!

According to the lengthy Times report, Peltola was "well-known and well-liked statewide." But some staff members were unhappy. This was one key issue:

For some on her staff, one task exemplified the disregard Ms. Peltola appeared to have for her employees: feeding her daughter’s pet chameleon, Meatball.

Meatball’s preferred diet consisted of live crickets, according to three staff members familiar with the demand, including two who fed the chameleon. Ms. Peltola instructed aides to purchase the insects at a pet store and then feed them to Meatball.

Aides initially went to Ms. Peltola’s apartment in Washington to feed Meatball, but the congresswoman later brought the reptile into her office on Capitol Hill. On at least one occasion, the crickets escaped in the office and had to be recaptured, according to two former aides who witnessed it as well as a photo viewed by The Times that showed aides in the office trying to trap the crickets using manila folders and small paper cups.

Live crickets for Meatball gone wild! The endless report was written by Kellen Browning, a young reporter who's six years out of college (Pomona, class of 2020).

A great deal is at stake in each of this year's contested Senate campaigns. It seemed to us that the Times was indulging in peculiar journalistic judgment of a type which was quite widespread as the paper covered Campaign 2000.

In this analysis piece for the Atlantic, Jonathan Chaoit blamed the highly self-involved staffers. At this site, we flashed back to highly questionable journalistic judgment once put on display by the Times.

HAPPINESS: "Hello, sunshine," the songwriter said!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2026

A brilliant comedian's duty: Shine on me, sunshine? Walk with me, world?

That was the start to a pop music hit which went to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country charts. For what it's worth, those lyrics may not be all that different from Thoreau's reported experience.

Describing his time by the shore of Walden Pond, the sacred being said this at the start of the chapter called Solitude:

Solitude

This is a delicious evening, when the whole body is one sense, and imbibes delight through every pore. I go and come with a strange liberty in Nature, a part of herself. As I walk along the stony shore of the pond in my shirt sleeves, though it is cool as well as cloudy and windy, and I see nothing special to attract me, all the elements are unusually congenial to me. The bullfrogs trump to usher in the night, and the note of the whippoorwill is borne on the rippling wind from over the water. Sympathy with the fluttering alder and poplar leaves almost takes away my breath...

Shine on me, sunshine? Walk with me, world? Not quite the same thing, but close.

That said, the country hit was the farthest thing from a report about solitude. It was written and performed by Donna Fargo, just another Pacific-10 great.

(The leading authority speaks: "Fargo attended High Point College in North Carolina, then earned a degree at the University of Southern California. After graduating from USC, she became a teacher at Northview High School in Covina, California, eventually progressing to head of the English Department.)

In the song which opens that way, Fargo's subject was happiness, the focus of very few songs. We think it's a beautifully written song—possibly, part of a broader anthem for this struggling nation's future.

She wrote a song about being happy! Inside the song, its second start goes exactly like this:

Good mornin', mornin'.
Hello, sunshine.
Wake up, sleepyhead...

It's a song about waking up to the instant joy of the day. That's something we Americans rarely do in the troubled, desperately threatened nation in which we all reside at the present time.

Meanwhile, how have millions of us been sent off to bed each night? With the gruesome cretin of the Fox News Channel polluting the American air in this familiar way:

GUTFELD (10/14/26): Mayor Mamdani announced that he will end carriages drawn by horses in New York City.

"I guess I can go back to acting," said one woman.

PHOTO: Sarah Jessica Parker

AUDIENCE: [Mixed reaction]

GUTFELD: I don't get that joke.

I don't get it.

"I don't get it," the creepy man said. It was one of his standard evasions.

Here at this site, we did.

This creepy man can't stop himself from this nightly behavior. Last night, his insult to the horse named Sarah Jessica Parker was followed by a joke about Governor Hochul's allegedly frozen eyebrows.

Normally, that theme is reserved for Nancy Pelosi. Inevitably, he then offered this:

GUTFELD: Security video has people doubting Kelly Clarkson's version of shopkeepers refusing to sell her an expensive mechanical bird.

She claimed that they treated her like the Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman, but no one believes that anyone would pay her for sex.

In the end, this is all this little mutt has. He had opened with this mandated obsession:

GUTFELD: Good evening, everyone. Hillary Clinton is launching a podcast. It's being co-hosted by Kara Swisher. That's right, and Bill already suggested a title for it:

"The Only Two Women I Wouldn't Bang."

That's what this little mutt said. Included in his three-minute opening was a joke on the (standard) theme that Kamala Harris is a hopeless drunk, followed by a joke on the theme that AOC is blindingly stupid.

(To power his insult of AOC, the little mutt pretended that she had made a dumb remark in which Alaska wasn't part of the United States. She has made no such remark. His premise had been invented.)

This garbage can rolls out every night on its "cable news" channel. Kat Timpf, the New York Times' idea of a feminist, is reliably willing to sit there, say nothing and watch.

Meanwhile, the sitting president behaves in the increasingly disordered ways which get disappeared on this "cable news" channel, and which are frequently avoided by the New York Times itself. But also, in one way, by Bill Maher, as we've been noting this week.

We don't agree with all his views, but we're huge admirers of Bill around here. What he does isn't hard. What he does is impossible.

We're in awe of Bill's achievement. But at one point, Bill offered this thought about why the sitting president does some of the things he does:

"I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer.”

No one admires Bill's achievement any more than we do. Way back in December 1983, he taught us what to do when the light bulbs in a comedy club's condo have all somehow burned out.

(You don't go out and buy light bulbs yourself. You get the owner on the phone and make her bring light bulbs over!)

Bill taught us that—the first rule of comedy we would know. (The second rule of comedy we were taught: Always eat the free food!)

Bill taught us the light bulb rule! But does he have a citizen's duty?

Tomorrow, we're going to suggest that he does. But what does that have to do with happiness?

We may even get to that.

Tomorrow: "No people are uninteresting."

WEDNESDAY: As a tribute to waterfront values...

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2026

...Chekhov concocted this tale: The creepy monsters who creep and crawl have been crawling all over the modern American discourse.

Can a large modern nation hope to survive in such desperate need of true, sustaining values?  Can some such nation hope to survive with the standard assembly of soul-damaged creeps sent out on that "cable news" channel?

We'd expected to post this afternoon about this latest astounding behavior by the flailing American president. But instead, we'll offer Constance Garnett's influential early translation of Chekhov's spectacularly beautiful story, The Lady with the Lapdog.

Here on this campus, we prefer the David Magarshack translation for Penguin Classics. But we offer this start to the story as a tribute to the Redford character in The Horse Whisperer, and as a tribute to the way Terry and Edie create a world of better values in the undercard to On the Waterfront.

The American songbook asks this question: Who will glove your hand? In this famous scene, Terry answers that question.

Chekhov's story starts as shown:

The Lady with the Dog
(Constance Garnett translation)

It was said that a new person had appeared on the sea-front: a lady with a little dog. Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov, who had by then been a fortnight at Yalta, and so was fairly at home there, had begun to take an interest in new arrivals. Sitting in Verney's pavilion, he saw, walking on the sea-front, a fair-haired young lady of medium height, wearing a béret; a white Pomeranian dog was running behind her.

And afterwards he met her in the public gardens and in the square several times a day. She was walking alone, always wearing the same béret, and always with the same white dog; no one knew who she was, and every one called her simply "the lady with the dog."

"If she is here alone without a husband or friends, it wouldn't be amiss to make her acquaintance," Gurov reflected.

He was under forty, but he had a daughter already twelve years old, and two sons at school. He had been married young, when he was a student in his second year, and by now his wife seemed half as old again as he. She was a tall, erect woman with dark eyebrows, staid and dignified, and, as she said of herself, intellectual. She read a great deal, used phonetic spelling, called her husband, not Dmitri, but Dimitri, and he secretly considered her unintelligent, narrow, inelegant, was afraid of her, and did not like to be at home. He had begun being unfaithful to her long ago—had been unfaithful to her often, and, probably on that account, he almost always spoke ill of women, and when they were talked about in his presence, used to call them "the lower race."

It seemed to him that he had been so schooled by bitter experience that he might call them what he liked, and yet he could not get on for two days together without "the lower race." In the society of men he was bored and not himself, with them he was cold and uncommunicative; but when he was in the company of women he felt free, and knew what to say to them and how to behave; and he was at ease with them even when he was silent. In his appearance, in his character, in his whole nature, there was something attractive and elusive which allured women and disposed them in his favour; he knew that, and some force seemed to draw him, too, to them.

Experience often repeated, truly bitter experience, had taught him long ago that with decent people, especially Moscow people—always slow to move and irresolute—every intimacy, which at first so agreeably diversifies life and appears a light and charming adventure, inevitably grows into a regular problem of extreme intricacy, and in the long run the situation becomes unbearable. But at every fresh meeting with an interesting woman this experience seemed to slip out of his memory, and he was eager for life, and everything seemed simple and amusing.

One evening he was dining in the gardens, and the lady in the béret came up slowly to take the next table...

The beauty of where this story goes is truly a thing to see.

In its time, this story was considered revolutionary for its ending—for the ending which didn't provide an ending.  Virginia Woolf wrote about the unusual ending. Nabokov called Chekhov's story one of the greatest ever written.

We've loved this story for years.

If we expect to survive as a nation, we have to remove the misogynist creeps from the American discourse. We also have to ask the question we've asked many times here at this site, the question about the trusted Blue American elites who refuse to report or discuss the misogyny crawling all over the Fox News Channel.

"We don't have a person to waste (Bill Clinton)." Nor do we have a whole gender,

The Magarshack translation: Writing for Penguin Classics, David Magarshack translated the opening in the manner shown:

Lady with Lapdog
(David Marshack translation)

The appearance on the front of a new arrival—a lady with a lapdog—became the topic of general conversation...[S]he was fair, not very tall, and she wore a toque; behind her trotted a white Pomeranian.

[...]

And so one afternoon, while he was having dinner at a restaurant in the park, the woman in the toque walked in unhurriedly and took a seat at the table next to him...

We have to drive the creeps from the American discourse. They deserve to get help after that.

HAPPINESS: It's not my place, Brother Maher said!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2026

We'd call that egregiously wrong: No, that wasn't happiness that sacred Thoreau was describing at that point in his most famous book. At the start of the chapter called Solitude, he was describing something else:

Solitude

This is a delicious evening, when the whole body is one sense, and imbibes delight through every pore...Sympathy with the fluttering alder and poplar leaves almost takes away my breath...

For a fuller chunk of that opening passage, see yesterday's report. To read the opening paragraph in full, you can just click here.

Was that Thoreau as an ecstatic? We've reported, you can decide! But as every American schoolchild knows, he was reporting from a hut he himself had assembled—a hut he'd assembled near Don Junior Pond, which was once weirdly known known as "Walden."

At any rate, he wasn't describing "happiness." We may get to that later on.

Last evening, for millions of viewers of one "cable news" channel, the congenial nature of all the elements was quickly replaced with the opening monologue on the Gutfeld! show.

The untreated mutt who fronts the show offered a joke suggesting that Barack Obama is secretly gay—a constant theme on this stone-cold nut-ball's gruesome show.

(Kat Timpf just sits there watching.)

"I don't get it," Gutfeld said, as the audience laughed and applauded. "Don't get that one at all."

Gutfeld routinely ducks behind such disclaimers as he degrades the American world with his grimy suggestions. Believe it or not, his previous joke seemed to be pushing the theme that Obama had or has some sort of problem with birth certificate matters!

His first joke dealt with the zipper on Bill Clinton's pants, which remained open on Columbus Day. Thirty years later, untreated people like Greg Gutfeld can't seem to move on from there.

This garbage can soils the American landscape every weekday night. Over the weekend, the Washington Post had offered this report on a familiar complaint by the sitting president:

Trump fumes at ‘stain’ on Norway after missing out on Nobel Peace Prize

President Donald Trump has reacted angrily to missing out on the Nobel Peace Prize, disparaging the winner and describing the decision as an “indelible stain” on Norway.

Speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York, Friday evening, Trump described this year’s winner of the prestigious prize, leading jurist and former U.N. human rights chief Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, as a “mystery person” he had never heard of, and said: “We will not forget, Norway, that you didn’t give this prize.” He followed up with social media posts on Friday and Saturday that criticized the award committee’s decision.

[...]

In his Friday night tirade against the Nobel Peace Prize result, which lasted about 10 minutes, Trump said he “should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t. … This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such an disgraceful and embarrassing decision.”

You read that correctly! Speaking at what was supposed to be a campaign rally, the president spent roughly ten minutes complaining that he'd been snubbed again.

Judged by any conventional standard, his complaints were weirdly overwrought. As the Post's report continued, it also noted this:

In posts on Truth Social late Friday and early Saturday, Trump, who is waging war against Iran, also said he “should have won 8 Nobel Peace Prizes” because he “settled 8 Wars” and was “about to settle, or win, two more, Iran and, Russia/Ukraine.”

In reality, some of the eight conflicts Trump claims to have settled have continued. Others were ended largely by others.

All in all, whatever! He should have won eight Nobel Prizes, the overwrought person said.

And yes, he went on for ten minutes! Is something "wrong" with this powerful man?

What should we think about this sort of thing? As we noted yesterday, in a new Club Random episode, Bill Maher, who we greatly admire, chose to say this about that:

Bill Maher Is Dining With Trump Again Because He’s a Willing Dupe

Bill Maher is heading to the White House to meet with Donald Trump again partly because, in Maher’s words, “he was like, really nice.”

The last time the ostensibly liberal Maher made the pilgrimage to D.C. to meet with Trump, he indignantly lashed out at those who criticized him for doing so. Speaking on HBO’s Real Time after the summit in April 2025, Maher noted that Trump has been engaging in a “trade war and disappearing people, ruling by decree, threatening judges, gutting the government with glee.”

But despite these actions, which Maher himself said he is disturbed by, Trump still managed to impress him.

“Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher told his audience at the time. “And why he isn’t that in other settings, I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer.”

Why does the president do the various things he does? Bill said he doesn't know.

Meanwhile, Bill Maher, please! He even said it isn't his place to answer that question. To our ear, he almost seemed to be saying that it isn't his place even to try to come up with an answer.

In our view, that was egregiously wrong.

Just a guess! We'll guess that almost everyone knows the unfortunate general answer to the question Bill posed. Beyond that, we think it's Bill's responsibility—he's a citizen, after all—to try to come up with an answer.

Tomorrow: A wide refusal to serve

TUESDAY: Welker wastes the nation's time!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2026

Brain cells under attack: Let's go with an easy one as we attempt to return to full services.

Last weekend, in her full interview with Abdul el-Sayed for Meet the Press, Kristen Welker journeyed down an extremely tired old road

Friends, let nip it in the bud! At the end of the 32-minute unedited session—this portion didn't actually air—Welker went with this:

WELKER: OK. Let's finish by talking about 2028 and looking ahead a little bit...

Uh-oh! People who own TV sets could already see it coming!

"Could we just get through 2026," El-Sayed helplessly asked.

Inevitably, the answer was going to be no. Welker soon went with this:

WELKER: Finally, last question. Do you think that America is ready for a Muslim president?

EL-SAYED: That's not a question I'm asking. I think Michigan is ready for a Muslim senator.

If only she'd ended the foofaw right there! But under eternal rule of the guild, this manifest foolishness followed:

WELKER (continuing directly): But do you think America is ready for a Muslim president?

EL-SAYED: That's irrelevant. I think Michigan is ready for a Muslim senator.

WELKER: OK. But you don’t rule out the possibility that—

EL-SAYED: I have no intention of ever running for president. That is not a thing I've ever wanted to do...

El-Sayed was forced to continue the ritual from there. We thought of all the years in which time-killing TV hosts tormented the late Bill Richardson with cloying questions of this familiar type.

Kristen Welker is smarter than this! But plainly, they can't help themselves. These pointless questions must be asked. It's one of the guild's oldest rules.

HAPPINESS: Maybe by the end of the week!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2026

First, though, INABILITIES: Say what? Shine on me, sunshine? Walk with me, world?

In our view, it was a good way to start a song. Sacred Thoreau was in a similar place when he penned the following words on the shore of Concord's famous Barron Pond.

It's the start of the fifth chapter in his famous book, Barron. For the original text, click here:

The writer felt "sympathy with the poplar leaves!" This is widely viewed as an excellent place to be.

But also, "Shine on me, sunshine / Walk with me, world!"  In our view, it was a beautiful way to start a song—a song which went to #1 on the country charts in 1972. We heard it again on the road back from Durham, years ago, after watching a certain second grader take part in a schoolwide spelling bee. At the time, she was the greatest kid in the world, tied with her younger sister, who was also the world's greatest kid.

We'll refresh you on the song by the end of the week. But also, we'll offer some thoughts on its relevance.

(At one time, the pond was known as Walden Pond. We've linked you to Thoreau's original text, which did include the word "trump.")

That song was a portrait of happiness. First, though, a different focus. First, we'll look at the inabilities which currently put us in danger.

We'll start today with an aggressive challenge to Bill Maher. It's voiced in an opinion piece by Mediaite's Michel Luciano.

As readers know—as we've often said—we've always admired Bill's enormous achievement. Today, though, Luciano can be spotted offering this, unflattering headline included:

And so on from there. Now for a bit of background:

Last week, during a Club Random chat, Bill said that the president has offered another dining invitation and that he's going to take it. At some length, Luciano says that Bill is wrong to do that.  He says that Bill is making himself "a willing dupe of a malevolent president."

We can't necessarily say that Luciano is wrong. For ourselves, we're going to focus on this part of Bill's statement from last year:

“Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher told his audience at the time. “And why he isn’t that in other settings, I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer.”

In our view, Bill was flat-out wrong about that—though also, stone-cold wrong. In our view, it is his place to try to answer that deeply consequential question. We'd even say it's been his responsibility to try to fashion an answer.

Why does the sitting president do the things he does? It's too late to avoid the disasters which may follow November's mid-term elections. But Bill was saying he doesn't know, and that "it's not his place to answer."

We're in awe of what Bill has achieved. But we'll call that spectacularly wrong.

We'll discuss INABILITIES all week long. Tomorrow, we'll start right there, with that.

Tomorrow: What, him interview a specialist?

VALUES: Brother Maher's aim was true!

MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2026

His remarks on the treatment of persons: Bill Maher is Cornell's most televised living graduate, surpassing even Ann Coulter.

At times, we've been puzzled by Bill's recent commentaries, but we thought his aim was generally true with respect to the disgraceful, appalling recent news from his disgraced alma mater.

Sean James reported Bill's remarks for Mediaite; he provides full videotape. Headline included, his report starts as shown:

Bill Maher Calls for Abolishing Frats Amid Cornell 7 Saga: A Gentleman ‘Doesn’t Exploit the Woman, He Saves Her’

Bill Maher said it’s impossible to know what exactly happened in the “Cornell 7” case, but the saga has made one thing crystal clear to him: fraternities need to be abolished ASAP.

The veteran comic weighed in on the alleged gang rape during the Friday episode of Real Time. Maher closed the show by saying the details of the case are sordid and hazy, but whether it was a gang rape or group sex doesn’t change his mind—frats have got to go.

"Any place that’s all male, no girls allowed, just doesn’t function without depravity. Just ask the Catholic Church,” Maher said. “Ask the Taliban.”

He continued, “Everything that’s inherently bad about men gets worse if you put them in a fraternity. The drinking gets worse, the cruelty, the treatment of women, the tribalism, the peer pressure, one-upmanship, conformity, segregation, nepotism, bullying, elitism...

We're not experts on fraternities. Also, we'd use more nuanced language than Bill uses when he says that there are things that are "inherently bad about men."

(Later, saying that colleges should also get rid of sororities, he makes the same sweeping claim about women.)

That said, Bill's general aim was true. As we noted several times last week, our human race badly needs "the girl."

It needs Edie Doyle to help Terry Malloy struggle with issues of conscience—to expose him to instincts which may be better than some of his own may be. It also needs people like the Robert Redford character—men who know enough to respect the decency of the world's good, decent girls and young women.

The world gains when people like Bill speak up. Here's more of what Bill said:

In this case, a young woman made a bad decision, as 20-year-olds do, when she went to a frat house drunk and did Ketamine. And for that, she claims to have paid a price no woman should have to pay.

No one was there [or] knows what happened, but I do know what a "gentleman" is. A "gentleman," gentlemen, is someone who in that situation doesn’t exploit the woman, he saves her. That's a gentleman.

For the record, Bill was using the term "gentleman" as a way of mocking the way the word is used in the mission statements of many fraternities. He was really saying that any person should step in to help a young person who is being assaulted after making a bad decision—as young people often do.

Good for Bill! We wish he'd also said this:

Does anyone think the men and women who run schools like Cornell haven't been complicit in tolerating the destructive behavior described in the recent reports? And how about the people who send Greg Gutfeld and a panel of stooges out on the air, night after night, to teach young men that they should continue along with the ugliest and stupidest forms of the age-old loathing of women and girls?

How about those horrible people? Who's going to save us from them? Also, how about the horrible people, all over Blue American journalism, who refuse to report and discuss what happens on Fox every night?

We've named some of their names before. Who's going to save us—our women and girls, our boys and young men—from the horrible conduct of them?

Tomorrow: Full services alleged to return

VALUES: Down on the waterfront, long ago...

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026

...Brando admired "the girl:" Her name at birth was actually Saint. The leading authority offers this overview of the life of a widely admired person:

Eva Marie Saint

Eva Marie Saint (July 4, 1924 – October 6, 2026) was an American actress...

...She made her film debut in Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront (1954), opposite Marlon Brando. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

[...]

Eva Marie Saint was born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, to John Merle Saint and Eva Marie (née Rice) Saint. Her parents were Quakers. She attended Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, New York, graduating in 1942. Saint studied acting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

And so on, at length, from there. In the obituary in yesterday's print editions, the New York Times includes this:

Eva Marie Saint, Oscar Winner for ‘On the Waterfront,’ Is Dead at 102

Eva Marie Saint, who won an Academy Award in 1955 for her gripping movie debut as the shy love interest of Marlon Brando’s longshoreman in “On the Waterfront,” and who proved equally convincing as a stylish siren opposite Cary Grant in the romantic Hitchcock thriller “North by Northwest,” died on Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102.

[...]

Her supporting performance in “On the Waterfront,” which boasted one of the most impressive casts and crews ever assembled, would alone have assured her a place in movie history; the movie remains near the top of the American Film Institute’s list of the country’s greatest films. It won the Oscar for best picture and director (for Elia Kazan), and Mr. Brando took home the award for best actor, for his tormented performance as a former prizefighter who moonlights as muscle for a corrupt union.

Even if Mr. Brando had the most indelible lines (“I coulda been a contender”), Budd Schulberg, who won the screenwriting Oscar, said Ms. Saint had the riskiest assignment—portraying a convent-educated young woman, Edie, who simmers with passion for Mr. Brando’s Terry Malloy. Edie, who discovers Terry played a role in the death of her brother, who had run afoul of union racketeers, plays a critical role waking Malloy’s conscience.

We could do without the stock about "simmering with passion." But as we noted quite recently, the Edie character does indeed "play a critical role waking Malloy’s conscience."

As we noted on Wednesday, we've always admired Robert Redford for what he chose to portray in The Horse Whisperer—for his portrait of a grown man who is wise enough, and human enough, to care about the suffering of "the girl."

As we recently noted, we've also long admired the thematic undercard of On the Waterfront, in which the female character, portrayed by Saint in her film debut, "plays a critical role waking [the male character's] conscience."

The film ends in the classic male-centric way, with a fistfight down on the waterfront. But along the way, the Brando character sees that Edie is a better person than he is, and God bless his decency all the way down:

He decides that he wants to be like her!

He decides he wants to be more like "the girl!" He's helped along by Karl Malden's Father Barrie, who memorably offers this:

Jesus Christ is down here on the waterfront...

So the Malden character says, in this famous scene.

The Redford character cares about and respects the girl. The Brando character wants to learn how to be more like her.  You rarely see expression of such gender dynamics—of such gender values—in major American films.

This week, it's been hard to avoid comparing those male characters to the gruesome performance of the men and women running such campuses as Cornell. To the gruesome misogyny displayed each night on the Fox News Channel. To the uniform silence meeting such cable news shows within elite Blue America.

We expect to talk about this more in the future. Over here, in Blue America, the uniform silence will persist.

No one will say the first word about the ugly values sold to boys and young men on those grisly Fox News Channel shows. The CEO who invented those shows will instead be sent to the Hall of Fame!

The Brando character admired the superior qualities of "the girl!" In last Sunday's New York Times, Jennifer Weiner described that very person:

My kind, smart, big-hearted daughter...

Her kind, smart, big-hearted daughter, who is now (gulp) a freshman in college, from whose values our struggling culture could gain.

VALUES: Did he say the same thing all over again?

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026

There's no known cure for this: Yesterday, the sitting president said it again--or did he?

To see what he said, you can just click here. We'd transcribe it like this:

PRESIDENT TRUMP (10/7/26): If you want to see trauma, you want to see problems—

And I said it the other day: Let them hit a missile into San Diego or Los Angeles on the way. Let them hit—

You want to see a horror show? You want to see problems?

Let them hit San Diego, let them hit Los Angeles if you want to see some bad things happen, you want to see a country that would be in free fall.

We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country. We’re not letting that happen.

AUDIENCE: [Applause]

"We aren't going to let that happen?"

In the view of one close reader, that's largely what the sitting president was clumsily saying the other day, with a clumsy reference to the idea that "we'll have to pay a bit more for gas" clumsily marbled in.

On this morning's Morning Joe, Mika and the others were pretending that he was still inviting an attack on the coast. (Joe wasn't there today.) Eventually, it was clear that Mark Leibovich didn't agree with what the rest of the gang was saying, but under the rules of the cable news game, he knew that he couldn't just say so.

There is no cure for the tribal mind. That's another way of saying that there is no cure for human. In our view, Al Gore didn't say he invented the Internet, and the current president didn't invite Iran to bomb the west coast

More on this another day. There's plainly no cure for this.
