Dueling tales about Bevin's wild ride: The man with one watch always knows the time. The man with two watches is never quite sure!
The famous old joke is called Goldberg's Law. It has now arrived in the Bluegrass State, thanks to yesterday's gubernatorial election.
At issue is the nature of Governor-elect Matt Bevin's ride. In this morning's editions, the New York Times and the Washington Post offer dueling descriptions.
In the Post, Aaron Blake told the story like this:
BLAKE (11/4/15): Bevin traveled the state in a gold Cadillac Escalade and ran as a self-funding businessman who couldn't be bought off. For these reasons and more, he drew repeated comparisons to Trump, one of the GOP presidential front-runners.We would have believed every word! Unfortunately, we had already read Sheryl Gay Stolberg's report in the Times:
STOLBERG (11/4/15): [Bevin] is an aggressive retail campaigner, and in recent weeks traveled Kentucky in a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban with more than 200,000 miles on it; on Tuesday, he turned up at two Chick-fil-A restaurants here in Louisville, shaking hands in a last-minute bid for votes.Whatever! In modern journalism, story is all! Why not watch Rachel Maddow tonight? You'll be able to learn about Candidate Bush's bird noises!
