Is that what Donald J. Trump really said?

FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2024

Paraphrase can never be perfect: Under current arrangements, denizens of Red America hear an array of statements and claims.

Denizens of Blue America rarely receive those same presentations. This creates a type of Babel as our nation, such as it ever was, continues to split in two.

Case study! Yesterday afternoon, we showed you a fairly length transcript of remarks made by Candidate Donald J. Trump in Michigan this Tuesday. Once again, for better or worse, here's the (somewhat lengthy) transcript of that part of what the candidate said:

TRUMP (4/2/24): Just a few weeks ago, I met with the grieving family of Laken Riley. You know Laken, she was incredible. Top of her class. Everything was the top. She was the top of everything. She was incredible. I met the parents, incredible people.

The 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia who was barbarically murdered by an illegal alien animal.

The Democrats say, "Please don’t call them animals, they're humans."

I said, "No, they’re not humans, they're not humans. They’re animals."

Nancy Pelosi told me that. She said, "Please don't use the word 'animals,' sir, when you're talking about these people.

I said, "I'll use the word 'animal' because that's what they are."

I'll never forget my vow to her wonderful mother, father and sister, two weeks ago. I said, "I will deliver justice for Laken."

I said that, and now today, I'm adding something. It's going to be for Laken, and it's also justice for Ruby.

We're going to deliver justice for Ruby.  We're going to watch what happens with this thug. We're going to watch what happens. And we have all the law enforcement behind. They're going to watch what happens to this thug. He's not going to get away with it.

For better or worse, that's what the gentleman said. "Ruby" was Ruby Garcia, a young Michigan woman who was apparently murdered by an unauthorized migrant who had been her boyfriend.

When the posted passage begins, the candidate has already discussed Garcia's murder at some length. For better or worse, we're showing you, once again, this part of what he said.

Now the question arises. How should a responsible journalist report what Trump said? How should that passage be edited? Also, how should that passage be paraphrased?

In particular, who was Donald J. Trump describing as "animals?" Fairly quickly, that turned out to be the question at hand.

Well over twenty years ago, we told you this: The power to paraphrase is the power to spin.

That bromide was derived from the phantasmagoric way the mainstream press corps kept paraphrasing comments made by Candidate Gore, starting with this poisonous paraphrase triptych from March 1999:

Al Gore said he invented the Internet!
Al Gore said he inspired Love Story!
Al Gore said he grew up doing farm chores, but he really grew up in a fancy hotel!

Those acts of paraphrase were all inexcusable stretches. Eventually, the claim about the fancy hotel (sometimes referred to as the Ritz Carlton) was seen by all to be plainly bogus--so much so that even the mainstream press corps abandoned the claim, eventually inventing the ludicrous December 1999 claim which restored The Rule of Three:

Al Gore said he discovered Love Canal!

In some ways, that was the most ludicrous claim of them all. But the mainstream guild whose work we now trust kept it up right through to November, attributing additional peculiar claims to Candidate Gore right through the Bush-Gore debates.

Today, it's Candidate Donald J. Trump who is being paraphrased. For various reasons, he can be especially hard to paraphrase, in large part because his statements tend to be so fuzzy and so imprecise.

How has the passage posted above been paraphrased by Blue America's leadership cadres? In particular, the question which arose was this:

Who was Trump describing as "animals?" How should his statement be described on that particular count?

Last Sunday, the leadership cadre on Fox & Friends Weekend made an absolute joke of the modern world. How have blue leadership cadres been doing? You probably won't like how we score it.

Paraphrase can never be perfect. How has Blue America's cable news leadership cadre chosen to describe Trump's remarks?

We'll plan to show you tomorrow. We think they haven't done a great job, and that Trump tends to win at this game.

Remember—it's all anthropology now! We asking you to think of this as a study in (vastly overrated) human capability.

  1. There is no point in trying to accurately pin down who Trump called "animals" when Trump is busily spreading misinformation about crucial things such as the actual crime rate for migrants. Somerby would do better to correct and fact check Trump's false statements, NOT trying to blame the press for Trump's vilification of immigrants. Trump is not the injured party -- the immigrants he is maligning and Biden are the injured parties.

    2. Agreed. We should be pushing back on Trump's obvious race-baiting, fear-mongering strategy. We should be picking apart his "argument," such as it is. We should call it what it is: race-baiting. We should keep stating relevant facts (unauthorized immigrants commit less crime, etc.). But also, someone needs to do some analysis of the argument. Maybe something along the lines of: Yes, an unauthorized migrant committed a crime. What follows from this fact? There is no realistic and humane way of keeping out ALL unauthorized migrants. No matter what we do, some will cross the border. And inevitably, given enough time, one of these migrants is going to commit a crime. This is simply a brute fact about how the real world works. Were there ZERO crimes committed by unauthorized migrants during Trump's presidency? Of course not. Is Trump to blame for every one of those crimes? Of course not, and neither is Biden.

Also, a cost/benefit analysis should maybe be done with regard to unauthorized immigrants. List the costs, list the benefits. And the benefits should include the benefits to the immigrants -- escaping a life of crushing poverty and no opportunity and possibly gang violence, etc., and replacing it with something better. Etc.

Maybe throw in something like this, too: The right focuses only on the fact that they are unauthorized. Ok, so they broke a rule. So have 99.9% of American citizens. We drive over the speed limit. We have a couple of drinks and then drive. Before it was legalized, a lot of us broke the law when we smoked pot. Trump supporters love breaking rules -- like shooting off fireworks even when it's prohibited, ignoring subpoenas, dressing like a buffoon and yelling at the state of the union, committing sexual assault, obstructing justice, etc.

    3. Trump's claims of a migrant crime wave are not supported by national data
An NBC News review of available 2024 crime data shows overall crime levels dropping in cities that have received the most migrants. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/trumps-claims-migrant-crime-wave-are-not-supported-national-data-rcna140896

    4. Mike L. : agree with 8:18 (which is most important), but you're not going to win any arguments equating illegal immigration by substituting the word "rule" for "law" and providing analogies that are akin to jaywalking.

    5. Many of the Americans living permanently in Mexicoare there illegally and do not even pay taxes, unlike immigrants here in the US. Are they breaking rules or laws?

    6. Unamused, fair enough. It wasn't my main argument. But it could be revised thusly: Maybe throw in something like this, too: The right focuses only on the fact that unauthorized migrants are unauthorized. Ok, so they broke a law. So have 99.9% of American citizens. We drive over the speed limit. We have a couple of drinks and then drive. Before it was legalized, a lot of us broke the law when we smoked pot. We shoot fireworks even when it's prohibited. We're supposed to report ALL income on our taxes. How many Americans report cash payments for odd jobs like baby sitting or yard work? Trump has broken the law in more substantial ways -- financial fraud, Trump U., sexual assault, etc.

I'm sure others could come up with other, maybe better, examples. The point of it would to show that it's not really about the law-breaking -- that's not what they're really worked up about when it comes to unauthorized immigrants. If it were really the law-breaking that they're so worked up about, then of course they'd be equally outraged at everyone, including themselves, their family, etc.

    7. Mike -- I think you're missing the point. Most illegal immigrants are fine human beings. As individuals most are fine people. Here's the reasons why their status matters:
      1. The US can only accommodate and handle a certain number of immigrants each year. Our lawmakers decided that the appropriate number was around a million. So we allow around a million legal immigrants each year, which makes us the most generous country in the world.

      2. Legal immigrants are preferable to illegal immigrants, because the legal ones are vetted for health and for not being criminals. Some contagious diseases are now spreading in this country due to ill illegal immigrants. E.g., see Chicago Measles Outbreak Grows After More Cases Confirmed at Migrant Shelter

      3. We're supposed to be a democracy, with laws enacted by our elected representatives. Our laws specify around a million legal immigrants, subject to certain procedures and limitations. The President is supposed to enforce the law. If he thinks we should have more immigrants, he should promote a change in the law.

Regarding point 3. Cool in theory, but you know, Citizens United.
We could push for 100% publicly funded election campaigns, but then rich, white, bigots couldn't bankroll Republican politicians, who also give them tax breaks, so it is what it is.

  2. If Al Gore had wanted to be president, he would have fought for his reputation, run a better campaign, and insisted on an accurate vote count in FL. Somerby's long-time attempt to blame the press for Gore's loss is misguided and clearly inappropriate when he tries to transfer it to Trump.

  3. Nobody in Trump's audience is splitting hairs and insisting on excessively literal interpretation the way Somerby is doing.

We all know who and what Trump is. When he calls someone an animal, no one is mistaken about who he means. As others have pointed out, Trump has stopped reminding us that SOME migrants are good people (he's sure). We all understand now that they are all animals, they are all poisoning our country with toxic migrant crime. No one is misunderstanding what Trump is saying in his current campaign -- except possibly Somerby.

Amirite?

    5. I met a woman whose company makes custom furniture in Florida. Trump ordered A very large boardroom table, the agreed price, $40,000. At delivery Trump said he would only pay 1/2 the agreed price. It being custom the company was unlikely to sell it elsewhere. Litigating would be costly so they took the loss. No more business with Trump, I conjectured. No, she said. We did business with Trump but applied a special rule only to him, no one else: full payment up front. So, yes he is a normal person, in a room full of crooked people.

  7. This is the context in which Trump approaches immigration. It is what his audiences understand him to mean, at all times, and it is echoed all over right wing media. This is from December:

“They let — I think the real number is 15, 16 million people into our country. When they do that, we got a lot of work to do. They’re poisoning the blood of our country,”

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna130141

So this splitting of hairs that Somerby is doing about a very specific remark is offensive and stupid.
