But also, the doomsday scenarios: Truly, it's been a "week that was."
It has now been seven days since the sitting president, President Trump, delivered his televised national address—the televised address which wasn't televised by several networks and was then disappeared by Fox.
Pretenders like Dana Perino have agreed to pretend that it never occurred! The speech has slid down the memory hole—but in the interest of preserving our flailing nation's history, what did the president say?
For starters, he started by saying what you see below. Warning! As you can see on the videotape from the invaluable Rev, some of the things he said don't quite seem to parse:
Trump Address to the Nation 7/16/26
Good evening. Before we begin, I'm proud to report that our country is safer, stronger, and far wealthier than it has ever been before. We are doing great.
Less than two years ago, we inherited an economic and social disaster. After the worst inflation in 48 years, the wide-open borders with millions and millions of people pouring in from all over the world, including criminals of all types, and 11,888 murderers, many of whom killed more than one person.
We had transgender for everybody, men in women's sports, crime ravaging our cities, and the whole world was laughing at us as a nation, but not any more.
Two years ago, our country was dead. Now we are the hottest country anywhere in the world. America is respected like we have never been respected before.
Before he began, he said all that. He then added quite a few similar claims.
That very evening, on The Last Word, Lawrence O'Donnell focused on the peculiar claim that, just two years before, we'd had "transgender for everybody." At this site, we googled the number 11,888, as we'd done quite a few times in the past, including the times when the president used to say that the bogus number in question was 13,099.
(As everyone surely knows by now, we're now living in a post-fact, fact-free environment. There's no real point in trying to correct the president's endless misstatements, but for one of many factchecks of those twinned numbers, you can click here for a visit to FactCheck.org.)
Before he began, he made those statements, many of which were clownishly bogus, a few of which can't exactly be said to be wrong. Then he began to say the things he'd promoted as being of prime importance.
By now, the speech has disappeared—has been dispatched to the region where disregarded piffle dwells. But just for the sake of maintaining a record, these were his five main claims:
Tonight I'm announcing the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure...
The documents cover five major areas of concern.
First, they show that, over a period of years, starting during the 2020 election cycle, the People's Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China's illicit acquisition of 220 million US voter files.
[...]
Compounding the travesty, the second set of documents we are releasing reveals that members of the deep state, very, very famous group of people, many cases, in our intelligence agency, worked to actively suppress and downplay information about the extent of China's sinister election meddling, covering it up from both the President and the American people like nobody thought was possible.
[...]
The third set of documents we are releasing proves that for many years, Americans were blatantly lied to about the security of our election infrastructure, including electronic voting machines and ballot counting systems dishonest almost all. They're vulnerable, and they're easily compromised and people within our government knew that.
[...]
The fourth set of documents reveals that, even when significant evidence of fraud has been detected, it has been buried and covered up. Among the disclosures tonight are FBI files detailing evidence of alleged fraud by a large-scale voter registration operation in Michigan.
[...]
Finally, to reveal just how vulnerable our elections continue to be, we are releasing the results of a stunning investigation by the Department of Homeland Security. According to the DHS review, state voter rolls, and public records, they identified approximately 278,000 non-citizens who are registered to vote in federal elections. Since Democrat states refuse to share their voter files, the real number is actually much higher than that.
Those were the basic claims, and those claims were accompanied by a profusion of lesser claims. Fact-checks were attempted by MS NOW and CNN, though everyone knows that we now live in an essentially post-fact environment.
In truth, the ultimate fact-check was offered by the Fox News Channel, where Dana Perino and all the others agreed that the best way to deal with this presentation was to pretend that it hadn't occurred. On Fox, the messengers agreed to talk about the many "Commies" instead.
On Fox, the various friends took a dive. But so it now goes within the Babel which the president decided to hail that night, for perhaps the ten millionth time, as "the hottest country in the world."
This very morning, just one week later, a new report by Vitali and Boudreaux appears at MS NOW.
Given his obvious worries about our elections, what might the sitting president decide to do this fall? Democrats are preparing for a type of Doomsday, the MS NOW scribes report:
Schumer convenes Democrats to prepare for election doomsday scenarios
For two hours Wednesday, away from the cameras, in a room just steps away from the Senate chamber, a group of powerful lawmakers rehearsed for some of their darkest fears about November’s midterm elections: disinformation triggering voter-roll purges in key states before Election Day, National Guard troops deployed to polling places as voters cast their ballots and the machinery of a free election seizing up in real time.
Almost a dozen senators, seated at long tables arranged in a U-shape, with notepads and water bottles before them, were walked through three hypothetical situations set before, on and after Election Day 2026. At points, screens displayed mocked-up graphics or artificial intelligence-generated videos that could be used to sow disinformation.
The exercises are part of a broader effort by Democrats—both inside government and out—to prepare for anything ahead of November. Republicans often decry their fears as hyperbolic. They may yet be right.
But multiple Trump administration officials have declined to rule out [sending] ICE agents or other federal law enforcement to polling places in the fall, though doing so would be illegal. And more GOP election deniers are rising into positions essential to safeguarding democracy in the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential election.
And so on from there.
(For the record, we have no idea what that last sentence means. The sitting president isn't the only person whose statements may sometimes be garbled.)
Democrats are said to believe that the sitting president may be planning to undermine November's elections. We can think of no serious reason to assume that this fear is misplaced.
That said:
What, us worry? That's what David Brooks seemed to say, last Friday night, with respect to this widespread fear.
Brooks is a good and decent person, and he's perfectly bright. Why in the world—why on earth—would he have said what he did?
Tomorrow: Jonathan Capehart's fears
Boycott Nolan’s Odyssey. Some scenes were shot in Western Sahara under illegal Moroccan occupation.
ReplyDeleteFuck off
DeleteSo 9:55 wants black people to be dispossessed, displaced, duhumanized.
Deletefuck right off
DeleteSaw it and now that you mention it, I'll probably see it again.
DeleteWestern Saharans aren’t Black.
DeleteMe too, this trolling really makes me want to support Nolan and his artistic choices. I don't care whether Berbers are considered black by right wing trolls or not.
DeleteOK, forget their complexion. They still deserve our solidarity.
DeleteDavid Brooks is neither good nor decent.
ReplyDeleteYup.
DeleteAccording to the DHS review, state voter rolls, and public records, they identified approximately 278,000 non-citizens who are registered to vote in federal elections. Since Democrat states refuse to share their voter files, the real number is actually much higher than that.
ReplyDeleteWell, the Democratic Governor of New Jersey just confirmed that there were over 6,000 non-citizens on its voters rolls due to "errors." So Trump was, like everything else, right. lol
there is no evidence mistakenly registered non-citizens voted
Deleteright, 6000 is approximately equal to 278,000- shit for brains.
DeleteWhen we Democrats make a mistake we admit it and correct it.
DeleteEven Republican election overseers consider Trump’s figures overblown:
Deletehttps://www.rawstory.com/donald-trump-election-security/
“approximately 278,000 non-citizens who are registered to vote in federal elections.”
DeleteThis isn’t quite what DHS is actually saying. They claim there “may be as many as” that number and they determined this by some unspecified examination of publicly available voter rolls.
This guardian story contains a link to X (Twitter) that shows the letter sent to California:
Deletehttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/23/new-jersey-noncitizen-republicans-election-fraud
Republicans run what little voter roll info they have through a program with a very high error rate.
DeleteThe Trump admin is notorious for cooking the books.
Voter fraud has been studied by professionals - as opposed to the Trump admin - and no significant voter fraud has ever been found, even the far right wing Heritage Foundation released a study that found it is a non issue.
the future Attorney General of these United States of America recently testified in his confirmation hearing in the Senate that Donald J Chickenshit has a perfect right to sell pardons. Because fuck you, what are you going to do about it.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Somerby discussing David Brooks at a supposedly liberal blog?
ReplyDeleteSomerby says:
Delete"Brooks is a good and decent person, and he's perfectly bright. Why in the world—why on earth—would he have said what he did?"
The answer is obvious -- because he is a conservative and doesn't want to discourage the Republican base from voting during the midterms by agreeing that the system is fucked. People stay home when they believe elections are rigged. Brooks sees that and doesn't want the current Republican talking points to mess up the down-ballot races.
But why would Somerby expend such praise on Brooks while unable to find a good word to encourage Tarlov?
And where is the discussion of Capehart's fears that Somerby promised us? Why does Somerby keep making promises he rarely keeps? Does he think it is funny?
He said he was going to discuss the politics of meaning, but so far he has only mentioned who originated the term and talked about it before, without telling us anything about what the phrase means to him or why we should care about it, or how it applies to our current circumstances. Very disappointing but typical of Somerby's approach to a blog where he pretty much says nothing at all any more.
This is a right wing vanity blog.
DeleteSomerby has long admired Brooks, who is a long time hard core right winger/Republican.

DeleteThose were the better years for this blog, for the most part.
DeleteHere is something else Trump said yesterday, via Tiedrich:
ReplyDeleteTrump: “as I said at my recent address at Mount Rushmore recently, I don’t know if anybody saw it, such a beautiful place. you know, the communists wants to take it down. they— try taking Mount Rushmore down. they want to blow it up.”
Tiedrich: "how come this is the first I’m hearing about this plot to blow up Mount Rushmore? clearly, I’m a member of the wrong communist cell. my homies just sit around and drone on and on about how the workers should control the means of production. BO-RING."
The only one I know who wants to destroy Mt. Rushmore is Trump himself, by trying to add himself when there is insufficient rock to do it. Has Trump been thinking about taking it down because he cannot be on it? Every accusation is a confession, after all.
There must be a plot, because Trump is always right and would never lie.
DeleteNorth By Northwest is one of the best movies.
DeleteThis is how Republicans operate:
ReplyDelete"House Republican leaders have bottled up a bipartisan bill protecting deepfake porn victims to keep Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) from claiming a win before a possible 2028 presidential run, according to a new report.
The Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act — known as the DEFIANCE Act — would let victims of nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfakes sue their abusers in civil court. The Senate passed it unanimously twice, most recently in January 2026, according to Senate records.
The bill has nearly 60 bipartisan co-sponsors in the House, according to Politico, where Ocasio-Cortez leads it alongside Rep. Laurel Lee (R-FL).
Four people working closely on the legislation told Politico that Republican leaders are 'scuttling' it rather than 'handing AOC a major legislative victory.'
"It's a shame that this bill isn't law because they are unwilling to give AOC a win," one person said. "When you look at it, everything is aligned for it to pass, except that they don't want her to have this."
"We're depriving many, many people of the ability to set their lives right just to prevent one member of Congress from being able to pass a bill," a second person said."
This is a bipartisan bill with unanimous support that is being delayed because AOC is a sponsor (along with a Republican Laurel Lee).
It is hard for Republicans to argue that they care about women's issues while holding back this bill, simply to attack a female legislator like AOC because she is a progressive. This kind of thing is why women do not support Republicans. These largely male legislators are scum. This is not how they should be doing their jobs. Placing party ahead of women's ability to protect themselves is wrong.
The political cost to Republicans is the loss of female voters. With this inaction, they are saying they don't care about women or women's votes. This is why more women need to run for office -- because these men don't give a damn about what happens to us.
Damn those online liberals who shout about racism and bigotry. This is their fault.
DeleteFemale politicians of both parties are supporting this bill because they themselves have been targeted by these deepfake porn videos. A woman shouldn't have to let that happen just to serve in the same capacity as male legislators do, without having porn of their naked bodies circulating. Yes, no one wants to see Mitch McConnell in the throes of passion, or Ted Cruz, but that doesn't mean women should have to be persecuted without recourse just to hold office.
DeleteMen need to step up, not stall this kind of bill because THEY are not the ones being harmed. Every single Republican should be ashamed that this is happening. It is not the Democrats refusing to bring this to a vote.
Women are mad as hell and not going to take it any more. That is why the midterms are going to be a tsunami that sweeps progressives and Democratic Socialists into office. The Republicans have shot themselves in the foot with this stunt.
DeleteWhere is the deepfake video showing McConnell dead in his coffin? Oh, wait, maybe that isn't fake! A party that would allow operatives to produce deepfakes of female politicians would keep a dead man alive just to rig a vote.
DeleteThe presence of these other deepfake videos and stunts should alert all to the FACT that Biden was not wandering or senile in the Republican deepfakes of him promoted before the 2024 presidential campaign. These were fake, part of a political campaign, a stunt as surely as DOGE was a stunt to excuse remaking government without Congressional consent or oversight. ICE is a stunt, a fatal one that is aimed largely at removing brown and black people from our society and suppressing dissent. These are all illegal acts perpetrated by Republicans and aimed at the left and at minorities and women, to achieve goals that align with fascism and corruption and a sell-out to Russia. It is all of a piece. No wonder these guys don't care what happens to women. They don't care about anything except their own wealth and power. Only a fool would ever vote for a Republican who will not call for a vote on this bill. Remember this shit when the midterms roll around, ladies.
It almost sounds as if the Republican Party is full of fascists, but oops, I just caused some Democrat to lose an election somewhere. My bad.
DeleteNext time DG asks what makes Somerby sexist, you can cite this issue. Somerby did not care that the videos of a supposedly doddering Biden were fake and he doesn't care that women are being targeted with deepfake porn of themselves naked. He doesn't care that Hillary and AOC and Nancy Pelosi are among those targeted by the deepfakes. He just wants to say vaguely negative things about Hillary without noticing that she called for the same unity Somerby himself has been touting.
DeleteActually, deepfakes of Ted Cruz would be funny. Nevertheless, Mike Johnson should bring this bill up for a vote. Abuse of women has to stop.
DeleteSomerby "doesn't care that women are being targeted with deepfake porn of themselves naked."
DeleteYou just made that shit up, didn't you?
[Predicted Response: Either (a) silence or (b) Gish Gallops followed by namecalling followed by whinnying about how I'm attacking commenters followed by profane invitations to leave]
No. If Somerby cared, he would have mentioned it. If Somerby cared about deepfakes against Biden he would have noted that they were being produced and promoted (by the Washington Post and Trump and certain Dems) instead of believing they were real.
DeleteIf I don't reply, I am blamed. If I do reply, it is called a Gish Gallop (which is a different thing) and I am blamed too. No way to convince assholes like you because your purpose here is to attack those you perceive as Somerby's enemies (or maybe just libs in general). You are an asshole and should fuck off but you won't. No one likes you here and no one wants you around. Yet here you are, asshole.
Unclear whether DG is disputing the existence of deepfake porn videos:
Delete"Female politicians are increasingly being targeted with sexualized AI-generated content — a trend that is discouraging women from political life.
In early May, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni went public with the problem after a sexualized fake image of her went viral.
Kamala Harris, Claudia Sheinbaum, Ursula von der Leyen and Azma Bukhari were among the many affected by sexualized deepfakes and sexualized AI images, DW research found."
Also Paris Hilton, AOC, Hillary, Nancy Pelosi, Taylor Swift and more...
2:59 -- Gish Gallop -- check; namecalling -- check; whinnying about me attacking commenters -- check; profane inviitations to leave -- check.
Delete2:59 -- But, to be clear: You admit that your accusation that Somerby doesn't care about porn deepfakes of women is not based on anything he wrote.
DeleteOr, to put it another way: You just made that shit up.
Prove Somerby cares about women.
DeleteWhen Somerby called Tarlov a punching bag, that is a "blame the victim" response to a situation where the sole woman was being bullied by right wing peers. Somerby called that her fault with no blame for the showrunners or others who interrupted and talked over her. When Somerby called Hillary a terrible campaigner, it was another example of "blame the victim" for the extreme attacks on her by the media, fake books like Clinton Cash and Russian interference. But "her server" is a ridiculous complaint when there were no rules broken and no data compromised, as shown by the investigation. She was not defended by her party and certainly not by Somerby, who did not defend her in any way during that time. Blame the victim is misogyny. If women don't want to be in deepfake videos, they should never put a picture of themselves on the internet, right, and they shouldn't have the nerve to run for office the way men do, and if such videos appear, it is their fault for making themselves public figures instead of staying home and being moms (although such women also get targeted by angry exes).
DeleteSomerby blames women. He doesn't defend them. And he sexualizes little girls like Anne Frank and he has never said a word about the Epstein files and the need to prosecute those guys.
Another Epstein conspirator who trafficked "models" to Epstein was killed in Europe. This is the third such death. Does anyone really think that is a coincidence. But Somerby is mum on that topic. Somerby sides with abusers of women, not their victims. If women don't want to be raped, they shouldn't drink at parties, amirite?
3:36 -- Oh, I almost forgot about that one: Make an accusation, then demand that others disprove it.
Delete3:46 - There it is -- the Gish Gallop in all its glory!
It is pretty rich to ask for evidence that Somerby seems to be sexist, then handwave that evidence, then claim with zero evidence that woke-ism somehow costs Dems elections - a noted Republican zombie talking point.
DeleteI hate Dogface George.
DeleteOf course. You're a hater.
DeleteAnd you don't like being called out when you make shit up, do you?
DeleteI hate you too George. I suspect others do too.
DeleteYou have my pity.
DeleteIt's a beautiful day out, at least where I live, yet you're stuck in some dark room stewing in hate. I'm sorry for you! But I'm going out to enjoy the breeze.
DeleteWhy didn’t you go out sooner, before attacking other commenters?
DeleteI’m enjoying a very pleasant walk — and hating George.
DeleteMore idiocy from Trump that is worse than any gaffe by Biden, chronicled by Tiedrich today:
ReplyDelete"next, Donny played a round of People That Never Happened The Most.
“[Trump says:] every single time. they’re afraid of the communists. you look at it— now I was uh— I fought Ossoff before, as you know, and we won. he reminds me of— Pinky Herman. you ever see Pinky Herman?”
no, no one’s ever seen Pinky Herman, you sundowning dumbfuck.
[Tiedrich:] hey, maybe Donny meant to do that, get Pee-Wee Herman’s name wrong.
then we got a little bit of Gender Reassignment That Never Happened The Most.
[Trump:] “we had transgender for everybody, men in women’s sports came ravaging through our cities.”
[Tiedrich:] remember that, when Sleepy Joe Brandon forced everybody to be transgender — and then we had to ravage through all the cities? they gave me a dress that didn’t even fit properly. how was I supposed to ravage while wearing that?
seriously, if the worthless scribblers aren’t going to ask ‘what the fuck is wrong with you,’ could one of them at least ask Dear Leader to define what he means by ‘transgender for everybody’? because I’d really love to know. he repeats this mindless phrase over and over, until everybody forgets that it’s just some meaningless dumbfuckery he made up."
Just as Republicans won't pass a bill despite its unanimous support and importance, because it might help one female politician on the left, no one listens to Trump any more or cares what he says, because his speech has no actual content that makes sense. These Republicans support Trump because he is the head of their party and they want to keep grifting and stay in office without doing the people's work. It doesn't matter what Trump says -- it only matters that Republicans win -- never mind that they do nothing with that victory except fund wars and blow up the national debt. Trump no longer has any content to his words and Republicans aren't even pretending to govern the nation in Congress. Some Republicans don't even come to work at all for weeks or months and no one cares or explains where they are. This is not a functioning government and the Republicans have made it this way.
Elections cannot come soon enough to fix this problem.
I want to hear more about this "Pinky Herman." There used to be a children's show host called Pinky Lee in California. I think he was local, but he was an obvious inspiration for the Peewee character. Paul Reubens should get some credit for addling Trump's mind.
DeleteOssoff is too centrist for my taste but he is a rising Dem star and a viable presidential candidate, so of course it causes blind rage among Trump and the Republicans.
DeleteAn AOC/Ossoff ticket would be very strong.
Although America is so sexist it might be safer to go with a Ossoff/AOC ticket.
He meant to imply Ossoff is a commie -- commies are also referred to as "pinkos," or in this case, "Pinky." It's an even subtler reference to Ossoff's new communist world order goal: everyone knows that Pinky is part of a plot to take over the world. I just wonder who's the Brain in Ossoff's pinko gang.
DeleteOssoff is relentlessly hammering on Trump’s corruption.
Delete11,888 murderers
ReplyDeleteIsn't this the exact number of extra votes Trump demanded in Georgia after the 2020 election?
Close. It was 11,780.
DeleteThanks, Anon@1:33. Still, is this a coincidence? Methinks not.
DeleteTrump has favorite numbers he uses when he lies.
DeleteThose killed in the Iran protests, which were stoked by Israeli provocateurs, went from about 3k in reality to 20k to 30k to 40k to 50k to now over 50k in Trump's framing.
DeleteAlso reporting has revealed that Trump knew that building was a school where many IRGC children attended, but bombed it anyway, then hit it again as survivors tried to shelter, then hit a third time as rescuers tried to save the children.
It's nearly a laugh, but it's really a cry.
Nobody paid any attention to Trump's speech last week, since it was largely the rant of a lunatic - per usual.
ReplyDeleteIt was not just ignored by Fox News, it was ignored by the public.
This irritates Somerby so he uses up a lot of space to repeat the parts of the speech he thinks are important, while failing to contextualize it in any substantive manner.
