Inaccurate, false don't register!

The shape of the cable news brain:
Today, at the start of Morning Joe, Mika played tape of a certain fuhrer holding forth at last evening's event.

Roughly one minute into the program, she was airing this videotape of the crackpot's crazy remarks:
TRUMP (7/18/19): Representative Ilhan Omar—

AUDIENCE: BOOING

TRUMP: Omar laughed that Americans speak of Al-Qaeda in a menacing tone and remarked that, "You don’t say America with this intensity. You say, 'Al-Qaeda makes you proud. AL-QAEDA makes you proud.' You don’t speak that way about America."

She looks down with contempt on the hardworking American, saying that ignorance is pervasive in many parts of this country. And obviously and importantly, Omar has a history of launching vicious antisemitic screeds.

AUDIENCE: Send her back! Send her back! Send her back! Send her back!
You have to watch the tape to see the crazy way the fuhrer performed Omar's alleged remarks. For ourselves, we were struck by what occurred when the videotape ended.

Mika had just played some ridiculous tape of Trump engaged in a vicious and ludicrous slander. Creative paraphrase hasn't had such an outstanding day since the boys and girls of cable news spent twenty months pretending that Candidate Gore had said all kinds of crazy things.

Dearest darlings, did Rep. Omar actually say what Trump said she said about the greatness of al Qaeda? Was he delivering an accurate account of her actual remarks?

Just yesterday, the Washington Post's Fact Checker site reviewed a similar gong show by Trump in which he attributed the same remarks to Omar. And sure enough! Early in his Fact Checker piece, Salvador Rizzo said this:
RIZZO (7/17/19): He seemed to be referencing an interview Omar gave in 2013 to a local television show in Minnesota. But Trump completely twisted and falsely characterized Omar’s remarks.
For Rizzo's full report, click here. But people who watched Morning Joe today didn't receive any information about what Omar really said.

The gang took turns mouthing words like "shocking," "low point," "disgusting" and "depraved." Also, needless to say, "racism," "racist" and "bigot." But none of these lunkheads made any attempt to challenge the accuracy of the claim they themselves had just put on the air.

We're fairly sure that we'll hear tonight from Future Anthropologists Huddled in Caves (TM), the trademarked yet disconsolate group which reports to us from the years which follow Mister Trump's War through the peculiar nocturnal submissions the haters refer to as dreams.

These experts have often spoken to us about this peculiar aspect of the wiring of the elite human brain in these, the last few days before the nuclear attack on Somalia.

"Due to chance mutations connected to their endless tribal interbreeding, the concept of accuracy had ceased to register on what was left of their failing brains," these rueful future scholars have repeatedly noted.

"In the face of slanderous claims, they would turn to cascades of denunciation," these top future experts have told us. "It rarely seemed to occur to them that they should start by telling their viewers that the presentations in question were factually bogus."

You can watch this morning's proceedings here.
Just as soon as the tape was done, the children began to display their moral greatness. The prevailing state of their intellect was possibly not as impressive!

Or so some future anthropologist will likely tell us tonight. When they refer to our failing species, they'll do so in the past tense!

  1. We’re sure Trump wasn’t lying about Omar. Mustn’t say that naughty word.

We’ll just go with “Trump is mentally ill.”

    Happy, Bob?

By the way, you were quick to share conservative Andrew Sullivan’s disdain for Omar’s remarks a while back, which Sullivan, like every other media doofus and quite a few Democrats, labeled as “anti-Semitic.” You tacitly approved that characterization. Your hands are not clean here.

    2. " Omar’s remarks a while back, which Sullivan, like every other media doofus and quite a few Democrats, labeled as “anti-Semitic.”

Omar herself copped the remarks were anti-Semitic tropes and publicly apologized for them. What is the matter with you people?

"On Monday afternoon, Omar apologized: “Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes. My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole.”

“We have to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity,” she continued. “This is why I unequivocally apologize.” Omar

(Omar accused the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the largest pro-Israel lobbying organization, of paying members of Congress to back Israel.)

      Delete
    3. Omar did not cop to being anti-Semitic

And @8:14A didn’t suggest that she did. @8:14 said that her language employed some standard antisemitic tropes, and that she apologized for using them.

      her criticism of Israel stands

And why shouldn’t it, even if she’s mistaken? Criticizing Israel’s foreign policy and its stance with regard to the Palestinians is fair play. Claiming or implying that Americans who lobby for pro-Israeli policies or those who support pro-Israeli lobbyists are people bought-and-paid-for and with dubious allegiances to the US, not so much.

Now I can’t read Omar’s mind, but her apologies sound like someone reprimanded for smoking while filling her car at the gas pumps: “Oh, really? Am I not supposed to smoke here? Sorry if I offended anyone.”

    4. While aware of 8:14's comment precisely, it did not warrant addressing directly as a function of it not making much of a salient point.

Omar's stance on Israel is fine.

Here is Omar's statement in full, it does not support how it has been paraphrased or framed by many:

"What I’m fearful of — because Rashida [Tlaib] and I are Muslim — that a lot of our Jewish colleagues, a lot of our constituents, a lot of our allies, go to thinking that everything we say about Israel to be anti-Semitic because we are Muslim. And so to me, it’s something that becomes designed to end the debate because you get in this space of — yes, I know what intolerance looks like and I’m sensitive when someone says, “The words you used, Ilhan, are resemblance [sic] of intolerance.” And I am cautious of that and I feel pained by that.

But it’s almost as if, every single time we say something regardless of what it is we say that is supposed to be about foreign policy or engagement or advocacy about ending oppression or the freeing of every human life and wanting dignity, we get to be labeled something, and that ends the discussion. Because we end up defending that and nobody ever gets to have the broader debate of what is happening with Palestine. So for me, I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is okay for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country. And I want to ask, why is it okay for me to talk about the influence of the NRA, of fossil fuel industries, or Big Pharma, and not talk about a powerful lobby?"

Israel does successfully lobby congress for allegiance, AIPAC promotes this policy on it's website. It is ok to talk about it, even in critical terms.

    5. Pro Israel via AIPAC and others, Republican House congressperson Kevin McCarthy may have allegiance to Israel, but does he have allegiance to Jews? Or Semites?

Is this Kevin McCarthy tweet expressing an anti-Semitic trope?

"We cannot allow Soros, Steyer, and Bloomberg to BUY this election!"

      Jews buying influence, who knew!

    6. @10:50P,

While aware of 8:14's comment precisely, it did not warrant addressing directly as a function of it not making much of a salient point.

I’m sorry, but I have no idea what means. Perhaps you could rephrase in grammatical English.

Omar's stance on Israel is fine.

I’d agree that it’s fine for Omar to take a stance on Israel’s policies. You’ll notice, however, that she doesn’t do that in the statement you quote. She whines that various groups (including her “Jewish colleagues”) think her statements about Israel are antisemitic and that people accuse her of intolerance, a tactic that stifles debate. She then goes on to accuse Jews (whom she calls a “political influence in this country”) of having an allegiance to Israel (which she codes as “a foreign country.”)

Yeah, yeah, she doesn’t actually use the words Jew or Israel, but everyone knows whom and what she’s talking about. With the possible exception, we’re expected to believe, of Omar herself because she’s a young naif not familiar with the history of antisemitism. Or something.

The NRA funneled Russian money to the Trump campaign, the fossil fuel industry tried to suppress information on climate change, and Big Pharma has been bilking our health-care systems of billions. AIPAC, on the other hand, supports policies in a legal manner. Omar doesn’t like either the policies or the success AIPAC has had in getting Congressional backing for those policies. Opposing the policies is fine. Accusing AIPAC of treason, not so much.

It’s easy for Omar to find out what AIPAC wants — she could go to their website. They want the US to take a hard line on Iran, to continue to arm Israel, to support direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, and to oppose boycotts of Israel. All of these policies may be wrong-headed and not in the best interests of either the US or Israel. Opposing those policies isn’t necessarily antisemitic, but advocating for them is not demanding allegiance to Israel, a charge that is.

    7. @11:17P,

Kevin McCarthy is a Republican, and as such, he has a primary allegiance to his donor class and a secondary allegiance to the fundamentalist yahoos who support him regardless of his primary allegiance.

The fundamentalists are pro-Israel because they belong to the death cult of the end times, when Jesus will supposedly return to earth and defeat evil, ushering in a golden age. A prerequisite to this delusion is an ingathering of Jews to the Holy Land, and in this fantasy all Jews will either convert to Christianity or be swept into hell. It’s not clear which is the more desirable option, but they’re both fine in this system.

Palestinians, Arabs, or other Muslim infidels succeeding in destroying Israel would put the plan in jeopardy.

I know it may sound like I’m making this up. I’m not.

This is an allegiance to Israel in the hopes of seeing Israel ultimately destroyed. Do you want to even call it an allegiance?

Kevin McCarthy has no allegiance to real Jews, who, inconveniently, don’t think much of the death cult.

Kevin McCarthy has no allegiance to Semites because Semites don’t exist. This is a term in a long-discredited racial theory, a term that included Jews and Arabs. And it’s why I prefer the unhyphenated form of the word antisemitism. The hyphenated form anti-semitism make it sound like antisemites are against Semites, and allows the ignorant to claim that they can’t be anti-semites because they don’t hate Arabs too.

In fact, the word antisemitismus was coined in 1879 by Wilhelm Marr, German pamphleteer and rabble-rouser, as a more refined replacement for the German word Judenhass, Jew-hatred.

So, what were those remarks, dear Bob -- I'm curious now. We know your zombie media wouldn't reproduce them, but why can't you do it? Scared of the reeducation camps?

Also, how does that allged 'twisting and mis-characterizing' compare with your hard-working zombie hacks twisting and mis-characterizing everything Mr Trump did or didn't say, day afer day, 24x7?

  3. I gather that Rizzo's report in WaPo did repeat Omar's actual words. Is anyone here a WaPo subscriber who can provide those words?

    Thanks

    1. I clicked on Rizzo's fact check. I don't subscribe to the WaPo but I could open it. As you can imagine, Omar condemned Al Qaeda and terrorism. To say she said anything in support of Al Qaeda is a big lie. If Trump wants to make that kind of accusation, he should better be able to back it up. Instead, it's this constant barrage of Goebbels-style propaganda, so much of it, the press is overwhelmed (plus they aren't that competent).

    2. Is there a zombie-cult taboo against copy-posting her exact quotes here?

    3. To be fair, Trump was misquoted and misunderstood himself - he was not talking about "Al-Qaeda" he was talking about "Alcaida".

    4. Mao, see above in the TDH post where it says "For Rizzo's report, click here." I did that. Why can't you. There you will see what Omar said that Trump viciously distorted. By the way, I'm not a member of any zombie cults, I'm a skeptic.

  4. Fox News has a report quoting Omar at https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ilhan-omar-jokes-al-qaeda-america

Trump's supposed quote rearranged her words to make them much more supportive of al Qaeda than they really were. However, while Omar didn't express support for al Qaeda, she did go out of her way to avoid criticizing them and she did defend them by criticizing al Qaeda's critics.

    1. Thanks David. So, what exatly was twisted and mis-characterazed? Seems okay to me.

And what the fuck is all this outrage about? It's common knowledge that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. In fact many US politicians apparently feel that same al-Qaeda are freedom fighters when they operate in Syria.

    2. For those confused on the issue, Omar was misquoted, her words were twisted and mischaracterized (although not mischaracterazed) by Fox News and Trump.

David you are wrong, Omar did not go out of her way to avoid criticizing Al-Qaeda, she not defend them, she did not criticize their critics, in fact she did criticize Al-Qaeda in the very same interview, she condemned them as “evil” and “heinous.”

David can you please explain how you got this so wrong?

When people like David pretend to get things like this wrong, society is damaged, people get harmed. We get things like The Daily Stormer. Let's not ignore David when he tries to spread his racist, evil, and heinous notions.

Trump is doing what The Daily Stormer did

    3. The congressperson in question is certainly entitled to sympathize with any radical criticism of the US foreign policy, especially the US actions in Palestine.

The Donald is, of corse, also entitled to characterize her views as 'anti-American'; and they are 'anti-American' in a sense, as those policies were pursued by every administration after Eisenhower.

People in the audience are also perfectly entitled to suggest than an immigrant with radically 'anti-American' views would be better suited in their original country.

The only problem here, imo, is the non-stop zombie outrage (including, regrettably, Bob's). This carnivalization of politics was introduced by the zombie cult, in the aftermath of their defeat in 2016, and it looks like a permanent feature now.

      Delete
    4. Mao, you're such a shill. Is the Donald entitled to distort what she said, by claiming she supports Al Qaeda? You are defending the indefensible, but that's the way you seem to boogie, when it comes to anything Trump. Look, I see what you mean by the carnivalization of outrage. It's not just the dems. Trump himself and the GOP are "outraged" by Omar. Also, are you saying that to criticize Israel has long been considered anti-American, and so when Omar shoots some criticism at it (and gets attacked from all mainstream corners for it, including by Trump calling her a vicious anti-Semite) then its ok to call her "un-American." Seems a stretch, to say the least. I try to look at all this objectively (hard to do). No one has "carnivalized" things more than Trump - from day one that's how he has rolled.

      Delete
    5. Of course she supports alqaeda, that's exactly what I'm saying. Not the methods, but the grievances motivating them.

And instead of silly hysterics, she should come out and say it. Others did, Ward Churchill, for example. He lost his tenure, she would probably lose her seat, but that's what she should do.

Trump didn't carnivalize the politics. spokesman for the zombie queen who declared him a secret agent of the Russian Federation set the boundaries (the absense of them). They never apologized, never took it back, never expressed any regret. And they double down every few months. This is exactly what they want, because they got nothing to offer.

      Delete
    6. She did say it, in that (obscure) radio broadcast - of course saying it is totally taboo, and leads to Trump uber-trashing her, along with the tea party zombies, and dems too. You can't bring yourself to acknowledege what Trump has done, so you come across as extremely disingenuous (or else cracked). Again, this is the type of outrage that fascinates.

      Delete
    7. Trump's rhetoric supports the grievances motivating Al-Qaeda, they are fairly universal. It does not make him un-American. It is his abuse of America to further his global financial interests that betray American interests.

      Delete
    8. Omar does not sympathize with Al-Qaeda, nor Alcaida. She refers to them as "evil" and "heinous". She also did not make anti-Semitic remarks, she rightly criticized Israel.

      Trump is not a facist?

Perhaps, but he is a pussy, refusing to defend his own supporters chanting in Nazi-like fashion "Send her back, send her back, send her back, send her back, send her back, send her back, send her back, send her back, send her back".

Trump falsely claimed that he quickly stopped them when in fact he basked in their chant, and obviously savored the moment.

Trump rally chants, Trump backtracks: ‘Send her back’

To be fair, Trump's mind is generally on his next meal, not on politics, thus earning his nickname Pillsbury Doughboy in Chief.
