Can anyone here play this game?: "Can't anybody here play this game?"
According to legend, and possibly in accordance with fact, the remark was "made by New York Mets manager Casey Stengel, expressing his frustration over the team's ineptitude" in its inaugural season.
This brings us to Mike Pompeo's appearance on ABC's This Week. Below, you see a portion of the official transcript.
Pompeo spoke with a puzzled Martha Raddatz. Can anyone here play this game?
RADDATZ (5/3/20): Do you believe [the coronavirus] was man-made, or genetically modified? From there, Pompeo proceeded to deliver a speech. The speech was designed to kill a lot of time and put the whole thing in context.
POMPEO: Look, the best experts so far seem to think it was man-made. I have no reason to disbelieve that at this point.
RADDATZ: Your, your Office of the DNI says the consensus, the scientific consensus was not man-made or genetically modified.
POMPEO: That's right. I, I—I agree with that.
Yes. I've—I've seen their analysis. I've seen the summary that you saw that was released publicly. I have no reason to doubt that that is accurate at this point.
RADDATZ: OK, so just to be clear, you do not think it was man-made or genetically modified?
POMPEO: I've seen what the intelligence community has said. I have no reason to believe that they've got it wrong.
POMPEO: Martha, you have to put this in context...
This was an especially strange performance by Pompeo. But the same can be said of a great deal of activity from all around the political spectrum at the present time.
Changes in media technology have turned us into an array of small, highly tribalized nations. Each small nation has its own tribal story line.
We humans take over from there. We bend all points of logic and fact to adhere to our tribal line.
Can you see a way out of this mess? We're not sure we can!
