We pay the big bucks and our action pays off!

Promising movie connects: Over the weekend, we actually did it.

Due to interest in the subject matter, we decided to pay the big bucks. This let us rent a current film through our On Demand.

We went ahead and paid the big bucks. We thought the film really panned out.

The film to which we refer is Promising Young Woman. We thought it was surprisingly good the first time through. To our surprise, we may have liked it even more on our second viewing.

As a word of warning, we'll say that the movie is heavily "genre." The individual episodes don't exactly make sense on a real world basis out here in the real world. But they make an enormous amount of sense in a certain inner world, as somewhat fantastical illustrations of an important theme:

They illustrate what happens when someone fully reacts to a moral outrage. When some one person takes it all in, doesn't just flush it away.

Remember, this film is a bit of a fantasy—a revenge fantasy, to be exact. It made us think of one of the best books we've ever read—Eleanor Estes' 1945 Newbery Honor book, The Hundred Dresses, the best examination of moral experience we think we've ever encountered.

Promising Young Woman doesn't exactly "make sense" out here in the real world. For us, it made a tremendous amount of sense in the realm within which it dwells.

When a person dies, "what has gone is not nothing." Yevgeny Yevtushenko said that!

Disappointing disclosure: In our view, the leading authority on The Hundred Dresses misstates a key part of the lesson it teaches.

After Wanda Petronski moves away, do the girls who teased her "feel remorse and want her to know this?" Actually, only one of the girls understands what a terrible thing they've done. All in all, the other girls really don't understand.

Only one person understands. So too in Promising Young Woman.

  1. Glad you had the funds, the time, and the comfy abode to fire up your On Demand.

Here’s a list of mentoring programs in the Baltimore area:

Maybe you’re already involved, in between watching movies, reading the newspaper, attacking liberals, and hate-watching Maddow.

    1. Right, wouldn't catch Cecelia mentoring kids. It's wrong even to suggest such a thing to a conservative!

I wonder if Somerby is aware that MLK Day is a national day of service in most communities?

    2. Helping other people is a way to relieve depression -- Somerby certainly sounds depressed a lot of the time.

    3. I’m not allowed to mentor kids. Court order.

    4. You perhaps think that's funny...while conservatives are accusing liberals of being pedophiles.

    5. Oh, no, I don’t think anything is funny. Ever.

Everything is awful, all the time.

Now excuse me as I get back to not reading you.

    6. Yes, run away, run away. It isn't fun taking potshots if people answer back, I guess.

"What's the matter, can't you take a joke?" The response of every bully.

    Who would say otherwise?

  3. I haven't seen this film, but here are some reviews by women who have:

Stephanie Zacharek, Time Magazine (on Rotten Tomatoes):

"This is lip-gloss misanthropy packaged as feminist manifesto, clever but not smart, cynical without being perceptive or particularly passionate. Women are angry for good reason. They also deserve better movies than this one."

    Candace Frederick, Elle:

"Promising Young Woman is more profoundly a devastating reflection of a woman consumed with grief."

Quite a few of the reviewers (male and female) thought this was a comedy, but how can it be? (I've never liked comedic films about the holocaust either.)

There are men who get off on women committing violence. One of them is named Tarantino. Somerby may be another. If women could fight back against a power differential, there wouldn't be a need for films like this one. Somerby has said before that he thinks women who drink too much, get what they deserve from random men who take advantage of their state. Does he similarly believe that the men in this film deserve what they get? Does he think this is any kind of solution to misogyny -- hand it right back? He is too much of a coward to even describe what the film is about.

I challenge Somerby to watch and then review The Accused, the film that Jodie Foster won an oscar for. Then he'll have some claim to taking this subject seriously.

  4. The Hundred Dresses isn't a revenge fantasy at all. It is very odd that Somerby thinks of it that way.

The Hundred Dresses is about protecting yourself and succeeding despite the opinions of others. Gaining independence from peer criticism. Promising Young Woman is very different because the victim becomes a predator and takes revenge repeatedly, without it satisfying her, for an actual physical wrong done to her (not teasing but assault). Sensitive children can have their feelings hurt by bullying but that is not equivalent to trauma.

I am so glad that Somerby is not working with children. His inability to navigate moral situations and understand other people's experiences would make him unhelpful to them. It is both confusing and upsetting when you read a powerful book as a child and then encounter some adult who misreads it in significant ways. It may be good to know that other people think and feel differently from you, as a child, but it is also isolating and invalidating and gives rise to doubts about your own thoughts and feelings. And Somerby is so off-base compared to more sensitive people that he shouldn't be a young child's barometer before he or she has learned to trust their own reactions to life.

  6. "All in all, the other girls really don't understand."

Does Somerby think that if the apology from that one girl had been received, Wanda would have felt bad because the entire class hadn't apologized? Somerby is such an ass.

  7. Somerby apparently thinks violence against women is a big joke, and if women don't like it, they can just fight back. Here is a story from Puerto Rico (from Daily Kos), but the situation is much the same all over the US:

"The night before Suliani Calderón Nieves was murdered, she drove to her mother’s house in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, to drop off her two kids. The 38-year-old health care worker had begun rediscovering her freedom after a contentious divorce and was headed to an event in town, where she was going to read a poem she had written. As she was leaving the house, her mother, Sonia Nieves, took a moment to admire her daughter’s long black hair, signature red lipstick, and bright smile. “You look very beautiful today,” her mother said. “Yo sé que estoy bien buena,” Suliani cheekily responded. “I know I’m hot.”

When Suliani returned to pick up her kids on the evening of May 17, 2018, the lightness was gone. Her ex-husband, José Vega Nieves, had shown up unannounced at the end of the reading, one of the many times he would harass her following the end of their tumultuous 16-year relationship. Angry, Suliani fought with him over WhatsApp messages, but her mom encouraged her to drop it. In the heated exchange, Suliani threatened to call the police on him.

That night, after she returned to her home with her children, Suliani logged into Facebook and posted another poem. “La vida te golpea… Life hits you, you think you learn the lesson and it hits you again. When the river of misery leaves its channel, it never returns to its current. The stones are painful episodes, more if you get used to their stumbling, you will only allow more sorrows. No one owns our life, and I just want to live it.”

Suliani was shot the next morning, by her ex-husband, in front of their children. Vega Nieves then killed himself."

Laws to help women deal with such situations are not well-enforced. Somerby's movie (ha ha ha, violence against women is so funny) provides no realistic picture of what women can do about crimes against them. Not only do women not want to behave like that movie's main character, but it is illegal to engage in vigilante behavior. But Somerby liked the film. That, in itself, is enough to tell you everything you need to know about Somerby and his problems with women.

And he pretends to admire Malala.
