CRITICAL MATTERS: Telling the story The One True Way!

TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2021

Anthropological insights: As we noted yesterday, critical theory is hot.

More specifically, a hot discussion now surrounds the teaching of America's racial history in our public schools. How should that brutal history be taught, and should "critical race theory," whatever that is, be somehow involved in the process?

These questions are very hot. Because the primary question is very important, there's no reason why they shouldn't be.

That said, a certain problem has appeared in Our Town, according to leading top experts. As this general topic is discussed in our leading newspapers, Our Town's thought leaders are all telling the story in Exactly The Same Approved Way.

"This is typical human behavior," one despondent scholar told us. "Our brains are wired to induce us to behave in such unhelpful ways."

This anthropologist then disappeared into his cave; loud moaning would soon emerge. This very morning, another column in the Washington Post illustrates what this skilled expert said.

The column was written by Gene Robinson. It's the fifth Post column in recent days to focus on the general question of teaching racial history in the public schools.

Yesterday, we noted the fact that all three columns in Saturday's print editions dealt with the American history / critical theory question. As of today, the number has risen to five. We offer all five links:

Colbert King (June 26): In D.C., critical race theory is simple truth-telling

Alexandra Petri (June 26): I'm for free thinking...about the things that I believe are correct

Alyssa Rosenberg (June 26): Ken Burns is an optimist. But he's very worried about America

Karen Attiah (June 28): The challenge for educators: How do you fight hot air?

Gene Robinson (June 29): The truth about the GOP and critical race theory

For the record, all five writers are regular Post columnists. There's not a guest essay in the bunch!

Everyone's offering his or her thoughts about critical theory and the schools. The problem is this, according to experts—to the extent that their thoughts can be said to be thoughts, their thoughts are all just the same.

As is often the case at such times, Our Town's thought leaders are all saying the exact same things about the current dispute. At the Post, they're all saying this:

There is no possible problem here. The whole thing's a GOP scam.

To what extent are the Post's thought leaders working from tribal script? We've shown you the headlines on their columns as they appeared in the Post's print editions. But here are the headlines on the most recent columns, as they appear on line:

Karen Attiah (June 28): The challenge for educators amid the critical race theory backlash: How do you fight hot air?

Gene Robinson (June 29): The cold truth about Republicans’ hot air over critical race theory

Every day, subscribers are hit with the increasingly undisguised mandated tribal assessment. The controversy is a bunch of "hot air" from The Others. It's a bunch of hot air, full stop!

Almost surely, there is a certain amount of hot air coming from Republican pols with respect to the current debate. But as Robinson starts his column today, he displays the air of total certainty with which this belief is being asserted here in the streets of Our Town.

His column starts like this:

ROBINSON (6/29/21): Republicans’ hissy fit over critical race theory is nothing more than an attempt to rally the party’s overwhelmingly White base by denying documented history and uncomfortable truth.

This manufactured controversy has nothing to do with actual critical race theory, which, frankly, is the dry and arcane stuff of graduate school seminars. It is all about alarming White voters into believing that they are somehow threatened if our educational system makes any meaningful attempt to teach the facts of the nation’s long struggle with race.

The Republican state legislators falling over themselves to decide how history can and cannot be taught in schools—and blowhards such as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), who warn that children are being taught “every White person is a racist”—know exactly what they’re doing. They seek to create a crisis where none exists in hopes of driving up GOP turnout in next year’s midterm elections.

It’s a cynical ploy...

Concerns and complaints being voiced by The Others are just "a hissy fit." The debate's a "manufactured controversy," but also a "cynical ploy."

The Others "seek to create a crisis where none exists"—and they  "know exactly what they’re doing." They're trying to "drive up GOP turnout in next year’s elections." They're just trying to rally the GOP’s overwhelmingly white base

Given the way those voters are, the pols  can do this by staging a fit any time our public schools "make any meaningful attempt to teach the facts of the nation’s long struggle with race." And that's all there is to this debate, full and complete total stop.

There's no suggestion in Robinson's column that there could be any valid concern about the way history is possibly being taught in the public schools. The whole thing's a cynical ploy. There's nothing more to notice.

Human tribes have always thundered in such ways as they've made their way towards war. Or so we're told by the despondent experts with whom we consult most nights.

Robinson thunders loudly today. In some ways, Karen Attiah's Monday column offered some comic relief.

When she offered her overview, she started where these columns always do—with the observation that the dummies in the other tribe don't even know what CRT is!

To the extent that it matters, that certainly could be accurate. But Attiah provides some comic relief as she continues from there:

ATTIAH (6/28/21): For all the conservative outrage about critical race theory, few GOP lawmakers can define what it is. It’s not as if the theory is widely taught in the K-12 schools—we’re talking about an advanced framework developed by scholars interested in interpreting America’s systems through the lens of race and civil rights. The Texas law doesn’t even use the words “critical race theory.” The vagueness is clearly intentional, as is the paranoid bluster that critical race theory is not only unpatriotic, but also designed to make White kids feel bad for being White. Fighting it is like fighting the hot air of this blazing Texas summer.

Very few of The Others even know what CRT is! Making matters even worse, they didn't even mention CRT in the proposed state law against which Attiah rails—and as usual, the ploy was intentional!

The Others are danged if they mention it, danged if they don't! This is the way we humans have always behaved, disconsolate experts insist.

The New York Times has also been offering columns about this topic. Three regular columnists—Douthat, Krugman and Goldberg—have tackled this topic in recent days. In the process, Times subscribers have been offered much more balanced fare than their counterparts at the Post.

This morning, Michelle Goldberg even suggests that there may be a tiny germ of a minor problem floating around in this stew. She spends a few paragraphs floating this thought, then finds her way back to her senses.

Tomorrow, we'll show you how the tribal imperative conquers all, even in a column like this. But could there possibly be real problems, or valid concerns, lurking inside this tribalized food fight?

Readers, please! Of course there could! To her semi-credit, Goldberg tiptoes toward that fact today, even as the proselytizing continues at the Post.

Tomorrow: Ever so briefly, she swerves off the road

Still coming: Complaints from an actual school

  1. "These questions are very hot. Because the primary question is very important, there's no reason why they shouldn't be."

Actually this statement is not true. First, these so-called questions are only hot because conservatives have made them the latest focus in their culture wars. That makes these questions a distraction from more important political issues. It makes a great deal more sense to ask what conservatives are trying to distract attention from in the runup to midterm elections.

Second, these questions concern curriculum and are better left to those who are professionally involved in education. Keeping politics out of our schools seems like a better idea than getting all huffed about CRT, which isn't even on the radar of anyone involved in teaching.

Third, our racial history is part of our national history. It must be taught, just as it would be educational malpractice to skip telling kids about the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the acquisition of Texas, the Japanese internment camps, our role in denying entrance to Jews fleeing Hitler's Germany, the McCarthyite witch hunts, and other shameful incidents. We already teach the proud moments. Modeling for kids that no country is perfect but ours has strengths and weaknesses seems like a positive approach to me. Conservatives prefer jingoism. That has always been true. There is nothing unique or particularly timely in this recent focus on how such incidents are taught in public schools.

Somerby joins conservatives in running in circles with a dishcloth over his head, screaming that the sky is falling. That's because his purpose here is to further conservative talking points and memes, not to critically examine the press or any aspect of education. He misrepresents himself as a liberal when he is not one, and he pretends to criticize the left from the left. But I don't believe he has ever supported a progressive cause, other than to state that he preferred Bernie over Hillary -- a brave stance for a misogynist of Somerby's ilk (sarcasm).

There is no urgent need to examine public school teaching of math or any other subject. There IS an urgent need to examine why Somerby never gets around to telling any of us what Wittgenstein ever said. My suspicion is that Somerby has never read him.

True. Educators are doing a brilliant job of churning out leftists and SJW's, so let's just hand them complete control. What could go wrong.

CRT exists only as an obscure legal theory from the 1970s, taught in graduate programs, not as anything guiding K-12 school curriculums. You are too ignorant to participate in this discussion.

    5. Anonymouse 11:07am, yes, I know. CRT is both critical to Western progress and you’re a racist and a literal whitewasher of history for opposing its tenets, yet CRT only exist as a theory in scholarly graduate programs among experts in Ivory Towers who head the development of academic curricula.

Same logic as in used in the argument that lowering the standards for entrance into programs for the academically gifted has nothing to do with doing away with gifted programs.

    6. David, don't be obtuse. Jim Crow is rarely taught. The triangle trade is rarely taught (slavery is one branch of it). People think Lincoln freed the slaves, when he didn't do that. In fact, people don't know about Lincoln's desire to remove the slaves to Africa, his belief that they could not mingle freely in American society. Slavery was frequently taught, but as a happy institution for both master and slaves. That is a distortion too. It is never taught that Texas became part of the US because of its insistence on maintaining slavery (against Mexican law).

No one is saying that slavery isn't taught. They are arguing about other neglected facts surrounding racial history and HOW slavery is taught.

  3. "We offer all five links"

What good is a link that is behind a paywall. Don't take Somerby's word for the content of any article. He often leaves out whatever doesn't support his thesis. He is not a reliable source when he summarizes other people's ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  4. "The problem is this, according to experts—to the extent that their thoughts can be said to be thoughts, their thoughts are all just the same."

In most contexts, this would be called consensus and it would be indicative of an approximation to truth or shared knowledge. Somerby takes it as conformance to a political point of view.

In science, consensus is important. When many studies all point to the same result, it suggests that result is more reliable than one where there are conflicting outcomes. What gets taught in college level science courses, what is included in textbooks, are the findings that have resulted in scientific consensus, the ones considered most likely to be true by a wide range of scientists. That is how science works, even social science.

Somerby however says that when there is general agreement about something, that makes it suspicious, more questionable, unreliable. That's because Somerby is arguing a different viewpoint, one that is not shared by those Post columnists and not shared on the left either. Somerby is advancing the right wing view but pretending that the agreement on the left represents bias, conformity, propaganda, not genuine agreement. He doesn't offer any proof for his view, of course, just the fact of agreement. But this is just another aspect of his "anything can be false" because we do not have perfect access to truth attitude, his attempt to undermine faith in expertise and knowledge.

And what more perfect situation in which to undermine that faith than a discussion of what knowledge should be taught in our schools. I think the consensus views of experts in history should be taught, not Somerby's politically tainted conservative cherrypicking of just the pleasant and self-enhancing portions of America's past. But Somerby doesn't care about truth. He doesn't believe in it. He wouldn't recognize it if it stomped on his foot.

  6. "To what extent are the Post's thought leaders working from tribal script?"

You cannot evaluate this simply by showing that several hand-picked essays are coming to similar conclusions or advancing similar arguments. You need to show coordination to suggest that they are "working from the same script" or colluding. Otherwise, the same script they are advancing might just be common sense and shared knowledge arising from participation in the same culture.

Somerby, of course, has no evidence that this is some kind of political plot (as it is on the right, coordinated via both Fox News and circulated GOP talking points). Instead, Somerby just assumes that those on the left (assuming these journalists are liberal, which they may not be) function the same way as those on the right. That is not a correct assumption.

Journalists are all saying that this is a scam because it IS a GOP scam and because members of the GOP have said so, and because there is no evidence of CRT in the schools beyond what the GOP has cooked up. Journalists are saying the same things because they are all working off the same script, but that script is called reality.

The memo that Jim Banks, Republican head of the conservative congressional caucus, sent to 154 colleagues tells them to use CRT as a culture war issue in the midterms. Here is where you go astray. There is no one running for office who calls any prospective voter racist or places racial issues ahead of economic ones. When you look at campaign materials and ads, none of them are about racism. They are all about changing people's lives for the better by providing access to health care, creating better jobs, and so on.

You are confusing internet discussions in blogs with actual campaigning. The two are very different and things said online do not reflect anyone's campaign on the left.

Voters, when they make their decisions, do not necessarily respond to programs designed to help them. They are blaming black people for their job limitations, or being told that someone is going to replace them (most likely an immigrant) or that black people are getting something for nothing and being lazy on their tax dollar -- because that is what they hear on Fox News. And they think the left is always talking about race, because that is what Fox tells them too.

If this guy is the paragon you describe, he isn't going to buy that shit and will listen to the plans and programs of the candidates and not the appeals to bigotry and fear heard from the right.

  9. This is what Goldberg says:

"My own position is basically anti-anti-critical race theory, in that I disagree with some ideas associated with C.R.T., especially around limiting speech, but am extremely alarmed by efforts to demonize and ban it. "

She then goes on to say that she is concerned about the specific incidents and allegations of misconduct made by Republicans against school districts, without any critical analysis of whether those anecdotes are true and whether the outrage among parents is manufactured (e.g., whether the parents making accusations may be Republican operatives and not spontaneous objections expressing concern for their kids).

The examples cooked up by Republicans are not always genuine. Nor are they representative of widespread practice in schools. Goldberg never deals with that problem but seems to uncritically accept Republican complaints. That shouldn't be done given the Republican track record for manufacturing such "evidence" that a problem exists. Her concern is misplaced.

Will Somerby discuss that? Of course not.

If Somerby thinks Republicans have or sort of have a point, he ought to show examples, and not isolated, questionable examples, but convincing ones that might show some sort of more or less widespread attempt by liberal educators to indoctrinate their students in some sort of nefarious liberal ideology. He owes that to his readers.

It’s also a rather long distance from ‘having a valid concern’ about something to passing draconian laws to outlaw that something. And that is more than Republican hot air. You may disagree with ‘CRT’ or certain ideas about teaching, but still object to the criminalization of those ideas.

Next, it is a legitimate exercise for a columnist to point out when politicians are engaging in coordinated, bad faith, cynical ploys. Somerby can’t have missed the top-down, coordinated messaging coming from the GOP, leading to the enactment of these laws in dozens of states.

Somerby complains that the GOP is ‘danged’ if they mention ‘CRT’ and ‘danged’ if they don’t. Does he seriously think the laws being discussed aren’t all about ‘CRT’, and how that term is just a conservative shibboleth, a catch-all for the same set of objections? It would be negligent for columnists not to point this out, or to pretend that this anti-CRT furor is just a spontaneous eruption of grass roots concern and not heavily manipulated outrage driven by cynical right wing media and political sources, just like the Koch-backed Tea Party movement.

Somerby acts as though Republicans may have a point, but liberals never do. He finds cynicism only on the Left.

    1. mh, we long ago made it a civil infraction to teach racism, sexism, and even religion in public schools, and we withhold federal money from private institutions that do that.

People, including Republicans, forget that there are existing laws that are punitive for teaching that certain negative characteristics are inherent via race.

  14. Bob, I know that you do not give a shit, but yesterday in your hometown a 20 something PhD stole a van, ran it into a house, got out of the van and walked down the street.
He walked by many white people but when he encountered 2 black people he shot them dead.
One was a retired Cop (36 years in service). The other was a female military retiree.
I know that you, DinC, Cecelia and Mao are rejoicing today.

As I told you a week ago your compadres may not be fighting to restore slavery; but they have no compunction about murdering black people.
