Bret Stephens on DEI: Gail Collins says she went to the Dylan film—but in her new Conversation with Bret Stephens, she doesn't say whether she liked it.

Stephens says he's planning to see the film. But in his new Conversation with Collins, he spends a substantial chunk of time saying what he doesn't like about the Trump White House sequel so far.

What doesn't Stephens like? "The list is so long," he says. Then he provides this list:

Bret: The Jan. 6 pardons were awful. So was the pardon of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of an online drug market. Withdrawing Secret Service protections for Mike Pompeo and John Bolton and other former members of his administration is disgraceful and will haunt him if Iran makes good on its efforts to kill them. The sale of Trump crypto tokens is tawdry and unethical, at best, though very much on brand for the purveyor of Trump Steaks.

Gail: Love that one.

Bret: The effort to revoke birthright citizenship and overturn 160 years of jurisprudence on the 14th Amendment is abominable, though I was glad to see a Reagan-appointed federal judge immediately denounce the move as “blatantly unconstitutional” and temporarily block it. Looking forward to the Supreme Court following the judge’s lead, 9 to 0.

Gail: Yes! Yes!

Bret: We should not have Hegseth as defense secretary; in fact, we should never have a defense secretary who can’t get a single member of the opposing party to vote for him. And the idea that Elon Musk has an office in the White House when he has billions of dollars of business before the federal government is appalling.

I’m probably forgetting something, but yeah, there’s a lot not to like. And yet—

Gail: Oh, no, don’t “and yet” me.

For Stephens, a man of the center right, the list goes on and on. 

Awful? Disgraceful? Tawdry? Unethical? Abominable and appalling? 

Stephens, a man of the center right, finds a great deal not to like! And yet, by that time he assembles that list, he has already said this:

Bret: Any thoughts on Trump’s orders ending D.E.I. programming in the federal government?

Gail: The idea that government agencies should try to stress diversity, equity and inclusion in hiring decisions was heir to the historic fight for desegregation in civil service. Reformers argued that Americans of all races tended to do well if they came from middle-class families with ties to their communities and that the next step should be programs to open up educational and employment opportunities for everybody else.

Seems very appropriate that the administration pushing back is one that tends to regard political loyalty as the most important criterion for almost any job.

Bret: The central problem with D.E.I. is neither diversity nor inclusion. It’s the word “equity,” which in theory ought to mean simple fairness but in practice meant pervasive racial and gender gerrymandering based almost exclusively—and unconstitutionally—on considerations of group identity rather than individual qualifications. It also led to the creation of D.E.I. bureaucracies in thousands of institutions, from universities to corporations, whose employees too often acted as Soviet-style political commissars, enforcing all kinds of intrusive orthodoxies that tried to dictate not only how other employees or students were supposed to act but also how they were supposed to think and speak.

Anyone who has sat through a D.E.I. training seminar—by turns saccharine and scolding, treacly and tendentious—knows what I mean. It just turned people off, including a lot of well-meaning people who are all for inclusivity as a value. Trump getting rid of it is the best thing he’s done in office so far, as far as I’m concerned.

At this site, we've never "sat through a D.E.I. training seminar." But we've read the books and we've scanned the brochures. On that basis, we feel fairly sure that we know what Stephens is talking about.

In that exchange, Collins offers the lofty ideas behind the fundamental concept of "DEI." Stephens moves in a different direction. In effect, he's saying something like this:

There's no such thing as a good intention which can't be unwisely pursued.

For ourselves, we wouldn't know how to evaluate an order as sweeping as the one Trump has issued. How many good programs are possibly being thrown away, along with some which may resemble the portrait Stephens offers?

That said, we'll take a guess:

Blue America almost surely lost quite a few votes thanks to some of the dumber applications of this theoretically good idea. Simply put, we Blues aren't anywhere near as smart as we persistently claim to be. We've proven this again and again with respect to these topics, and we continue to do so.

Before the week is done, we'll offer a brand-new example. Every time some of this unhelpful folderol hits the fan, a Trump voter gets his wings.

It declares a policy that no court ever found in violation of the law "illegal," so it's a fucking lie to call DEI programs that. A president cannot just say something is illegal and all of a sudden it is. That's not how government works (or, at least, used to work). It casts doubt on the hiring of anyone who is not white, male, and abled, claiming that diversity was more important than safety, which is also a fucking lie. It mocks anyone who belongs to diverse groups when it says that some people wanted jobs but "lack a requisite disability or skin color." And it implies that when diverse candidates are hired, they do not "have the ability" to do their jobs well, which is, again, a fucking lie.

      The Trump administration's approach to DEI efforts is akin to the insanity over Communists in the government during the era of Joe McCarthy. In fact, you could replace "DEI" with "the Communist Party" in most of these statements, and it would pretty much sound the same. The most comprehensive of the executive orders starts with maliciously discrediting the entire attempt to make the federal workplace less discriminatory: "In case after tragic case, the American people have witnessed first-hand the disastrous consequences of illegal, pernicious discrimination that has prioritized how people were born instead of what they were capable of doing." Again, this just simply is a lie. Unless you can point out how, say, an incompetent Black woman was hired over a more qualified white man and that that hire would have stopped, say, a fire tornado in Los Angeles, then you don't have an argument. You have incitement, hyperbole, and all the -isms (race, sex, etc.).

    3. California is the 2nd largest economy in the world, per capita (5th overall).

      As a small business owner in LA, my DEI hiring is in full force and will remain so.

      It’s rare that I find a White person qualified enough to hire, but they typically are lazy and unfortunately I often have to let them go. I’m not opposed to hiring a White, but people of color tend to be better qualified and harder working, so that’s mostly who I employ.

      Gov Newsom has worked hard to isolate us in CA from Trump’s harmful policies, I am very grateful for that.

      Blue areas provide most of the labor and produce most of the gdp that red areas parasitically live off of, so Trump would be advised to not rock the boat, cutting off red areas from the hand that feeds them.

Why should those trainings be fun or interesting when you guys with there resenting the people on whose behalf they are being presented?   14. In my job they made me sit through training on how to handle dangerous chemicals, when there were no circumstances where I would need to be doing that. I resented the time I had to spend on it, until my supervisor told me I had to watch the videos or leave my job. Completion was mandated by govt contract. These videos on interviewing and hiring rules, sexual harrassment, racial discrimination, and the exercises that go with them, are no different than the so-called team-building we were required to do on my job. No one likes that stuff. But it is important to learn that you cannot ask a female job applicant whether she is married or how many kids she has, or someone with an accent what country they came from, etc. There are rules because companies can be sued for wrong behavior and that costs them money. Now that the govt is going out of the civil rights enforcement business, there will be way for minorities and women to protect their rights in the job market. That is a step backward that no one should be cheering just because they don't like to be reminded that fairness matters.

  15. D.E.I. initiatives have noble aims but executing them intersects too closely with institutional power and control. For the last group that tried it, wielding that power and control was way too much to handle. There was too much money and power involved to execute it effectively.

    In other words, the seminars mentioned about that taught people "to treat people with respect and not harass them" were boondoggles. That really tells you all you need to know. Obviously, no one needs a seminar to be told "to treat people with respect and not harass them". But they had seminars that did. Why? Because they were scams perpetrated by the people giving them. D.E.I. initiatives were a way for grifters to lighten the pockets of corporations and government.

    Why do companies and governmental organizations even have DEI training? As a way to mitigate against discrimination lawsuits.

    That's right. Employees who were black, Hispanic, gay, or female were targets of discrimination--typically victims of fellow employees or low-level managers. The workers who were discriminated against sued because the organizations did nothing to protect them--and they won big, fat financial awards.

    Top level managers, responsible for their organizations' profits and reputations were ordered by their boards of directors to tamp down the risk of big court judgments. So they hired companies to come in and teach employees how to behave themselves.

    So now the pressure is on to roll back DEI. OK. Just watch what happens next.
