Tapper to Arizona: We managed to make it through the full first hour of today's Morning Joe. For that reason, we got to see the videotape of the deeply sane Chloe Kim.
Kim, who was born in Torrance, California, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. For that reason, she's over in Italy now, where she defended an Olympic teammate who was criticized, very unwisely and in a dangerous way, by the sitting president.
Late in today's first hour, we got to see what she said. Right there on the videotape, we saw Kim say this:
KIM (2/10/26): My parents being immigrants from Korea, this one definitely hits pretty close to home. And I think in moments like these, it is really important for us to unite and kind of stand up for one another for all that’s going on.
And I think that I’m really proud to represent the United States. The U.S. has given my family and I so much opportunity, but I also think that we are allowed to voice our opinions of what’s going on. And I think that we need to lead with love and compassion, and I would love to see some more of that.
What has any American ever done to merit sharing citizenship with someone as sharp as that?
The videotape of that statement came late in the 6 o'clock hour. Watching Joe Scarborough at the start of the hour, it occurred to us that he needs to go somewhere and take a long rest, or perhaps get back on his meds.
For our money, Kim made a morally brilliant appeal. This morning, Scarborough didn't. He was still name-calling the others about the Bad Bunny halftime show—everyone who isn't reciting the same scripts he's being paid to read.
In our view, what follows is ugly stuff. Joe was chronicling negative reaction to Sunday's halftime show:
SCARBOROUGH (2/10/26): My favorite—and it was said in racist neighborhoods across America over the past couple of days:
"He's not even American! Why aren't we having an American here?"
[He's] more American than U2! More American than Paul McCartney! More American than—go down the list!
It's OK—if they just want to admit that they're bigots, they can always just say, "We don't like brown people doing our halftime shows." They might as well say it
For the record, U2 and Paul McCartney were past halftime acts. (So was Kid Rock, back in 2004!)
At any rate, that's the way Morning Joe started. In our view, that's ugly stuff, but also supremely stupid:
Somehow, the star of the show was able to report what was said, the past two days, "in racist neighborhoods across America." It was being said in those neighborhoods by the "bigots," he reported (but also, we'll guess, by the deplorables.)
(Willie quickly voiced agreement, as he's required to do. Cable news has largely transitioned into tribal reassurance services at this point in time. No complexity need apply!)
In our view, that was ugly stuff—ugly, but also stupid. After the tape of Kim's remarks, Lemire got things back on track with this ridiculous comment, suitable for tribal consumption:
LEMIRE: When you perceive a halftime act as saying, "Our message is love," and you perceive that as an attack on you—well, you're sort of telling on yourself.
Seriously, that's what he said! But what if you didn't perceive the halftime act as saying, "Our message is love?" If you didn't perceive the act that way, is it OK to think the act might have been poorly suited for this particular occasion?
Full disclosure! Normally, we don't watch the Super Bowl halftime shows. We clean house for maybe three hours, then return for the second half.
On this occasion, we did watch the halftime show, intrigued by all the hoopla. For ourselves, we didn't think the act was perfectly suited to the occasion. That has nothing to do with Bad Bunny himself, or with Bad Bunny's music.
At any rate, Joe was trashing the bigots again. Over here in Blue America, it sometimes seems like that's the only reaction we have.
Meanwhile, there was Kasie Hunt—a good, decent person with a winning demeanor—hosting her 4 p.m. CNN show, which has been scoring good ratings. Yesterday afternoon, she had an hour with which to survey the world.
Many events take place in the world. This is the way she started:
ANNOUNCER (2/9/26): This is CNN breaking news.
HUNT: Hi, everyone. I'm Kasie Hunt. Welcome to THE ARENA. It's good to have you with us on this Monday.
Right now, as we come on the air, we are covering a new video that was just released ahead of the new deadline in a desperate search...
At this point, she played videotape of Savannah Guthrie, then summarized the basic events of the search for Guthrie's mother. Eventually, Hunt said this:
HUNT: As of today, as the search enters its ninth day, police still say they have no suspects or persons of interest. Law enforcement officials were seen at Nancy's home on Sunday. They were also seen at the home of her daughter, Annie, late Saturday.
Let's get off the sidelines, head into THE ARENA.
My panel will be here. We're also joined by CNN senior national correspondent Ed Lavandera. He's outside Nancy Guthrie's home in Tucson.
Ed, can you bring us up to speed with the latest on the ground? This shift in tone from Savannah just now? Pretty remarkable.
Lavandera was on the scene in Tucson. Hunt's panel was there on the set.
By the time the hour was done, her panelists seemed to number in the thousands. Eventually, at 4:22, she even surprised us with this:
HUNT: We're going to continue covering this throughout the hour here in THE ARENA. Don't go anywhere.
We have much more breaking news. Our Jake Tapper is on the scene in Arizona. We're going to check in with him live when we come back.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
Say what? Tapper was also in Arizona? After the commercial break, he was introduced by Hunt as CNN's "chief Washington correspondent!"
Morning Joe was trashing the bigots. CNN was chasing true crime again, to the exclusion of everything else.
Everything else had disappeared from the coverage on Hunt's show. And that night, on the Fox News Channel's Gutfeld! program, the cable star opened with this:
GUTFELD (2/9/26): Good evening, everyone! So during the fourth quarter of last night's Super Bowl, a half-naked male streaker ran onto the field.
He left his pants on, leading everyone to believe that he has a small penis.
TYRUS: Wooooo!
It's all this tragic nut-ball has. His next three jokes asserted these themes:
Don Lemon likes getting oral sex from men. Hispanics can't stop having sex. The NBA is crawling with criminals.
That's the way the game is now played on the so-called Fox News Channel. Family values have left the stage. A garbage can has been rolled in.
The Ghosts of True Crime Rampages Past have been evident at CNN and on the Fox News Channel. As panelists kill endless time pretending to discuss the search for Nancy Guthrie, everyone avoids a blindingly obvious question:
Why did "law enforcement officials" spend almost three hours taking a special type of photo inside Annie Guthrie's home late Saturday night? (See Hunt's text, above.)
Whatever the answer to that question might be, it's the world's most obvious question. Every expert has spent the past three days being careful not to ask it.
"The American people are pretty sharp!" It's long been a bromide on broadcast news, voiced by pundits and pols alike. But actually, no! We just aren't especially sharp, and neither is anyone else.
The ghosts of true crime rampages past seemed to haunt our dreams last night. Other topics had largely disappeared on two of our cable news channels.
Over where the Good People live, we Blues were hunting the bigots again. In the end, is that all we really have?
We're seeking "proof of (intelligent) life" in our reports at this site this week:
Chloe Kim is 25. How did she get to be like that? What explains everyone else?
Tomorrow: When a true crime rampage starts, nothing beside remains
“New Docs Show Trump Called Police About Epstein in 2006: ‘Thank Goodness You’re Stopping Him’”
ReplyDeleteInteresting that the report doesn't say Trump called to report Epstein to the police, like a decent person would have done.
DeleteRather, he seems, in the wording of the headline, to have phoned the police once an investigation had already been opened.
Exactly, Hector. Classic chickenshit move
Delete"Hi I'm calling to report rumors that Jefferey Epstein is pimping underage girls." Democrats are stupid.
DeleteTrumptard says what?
DeleteSo Trump is no longer accused of having sex with children. He accused of doing something to end that practice, but not doing as much as he should have done.
DeleteThe important thing politically is that the Dem/media smear campaign is working. Regardless of the facts, a lot of Americans believe that Trump did have sex with children or, at least, that he might have.
Dickhead, did you know that snitches in the mob are still guilty of mob crimes? You fucking trump lickspittle.
DeleteYes, trumptard, orange abomination still stands accused of raping underage girls.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
Delete“ Trump is no longer accused of having sex with children. ”
DeleteWho says?
How is it that Trump supposedly turned in Epstein to the FBI in 2006 and yet had Thanksgiving dinner with him in the White House in 2017 and partied with Trump and his sons at Mar a Lago at Christmas in 2018?
Delete"He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
DeleteNudge, nudge. Wink, wink.
aye yai yai....the copium...
Deletehttps://youtu.be/4RXV-p_Ec6Q?si=5AjZMmrZmdbg-OXW
Trump has had a friendly history with the Palm Beach police chief Reiter. Reiter was interviewed in 2019 by the FBI when he supposedly claimed that Trump called him in July 2006 and expressed concern about Epstein. That is the only evidence for this claim. Supposedly Trump said "Thank goodness you're stopping him", which sounds nothing like Trump.
Yeah, this likely never happened, this call from Trump.
But let's assume it did. The supposed call was in July 2006, but by May 2006 there already was a grand jury convened to prosecute Epstein. So if this call is real, which it probably is not, then it was most likely a case of Trump "working the ref", trying to mitigate any negative perceptions about his own connections to Epstein.
What happened next was that the local US Attorney Acosta gave Epstein a "sweetheart deal", a slap on the wrist for a truly repugnant crime, and then Trump rewarded Acosta by appointing him as Sec of Labor. Acosta had zero qualifications for, and no history in, labor issues.
The narrative of Trump expressing concerns about Epstein in 2006 runs counter to the idea that he would later appoint Acosta, who offered Epstein a lenient plea deal. This suggests a lack of genuine concern about Epstein's activities.
Indeed Trump remained friendly with Epstein all the way up until his 2019 arrest. And that is when "news" of this supposed phone call came to the attention of the FBI.
Trump was trying to control the narrative, he knew there was trouble for him brewing, considering his long and close friendship with Epstein.
So, the call probably never happened, but if it did, it in no way is exculpatory for Trump, it actual further implicates him in the whole mess.
The whole Epstein Files narrative never made sense. There was always something fishy about Republicans having a problem with child rape.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThe way Republicans are doubling down on defending Trump being accused of sexually assaulting many women and even minors, seems misguided since Trump is now so deeply unpopular. Trump tanking the economy and engaging in wars all over the world is bad enough, but with Trump being implicated in the Epstein files, that is a bridge too far.
DeleteSome Republicans are waking up to this and are no longer defending Trump; these are the ones that can see the writing on the wall.
For those that are doubling down, none of us will forget that, such people have lost any credibility.
"Hi I'm calling to report rumors that Jefferey Epstein is pimping underage girls."
DeleteIt wouldn't be rumors. It would be personal knowledge, based on a dozen or so years of being close friends with Epstein. However, there's nothing wrong with relaying hearsay information to the police either.
The important thing politically is that the Dem/media smear campaign is working. Regardless of the facts, a lot of Americans believe that Trump did have sex with children or, at least, that he might have.
DeleteThat is a good thing, isn't it, David? As JD Vance would put it: this is helping us to get at the larger truth. Nothing wrong with that.
As others have noted, this phone call is probably a work of fiction.
Delete12:18 does an excellent debunk of all this.
Delete“So Trump is no longer accused of having sex with underaged girls.” Hahahaha. If Maxwell’s attorney gets her clemency from the pedo/racist/fraudster he will definitely be exonerated.
Delete“So Trump is no longer accused of having sex with underaged girls.” Hahahaha. If Maxwell’s attorney gets her clemency from the pedo/racist/fraudster he will definitely be exonerated.
DeleteYeah, nice job 12:18.
DeleteAs others have noted, this phone call is probably a work of fiction.
DeleteNo, this phone call is more than likely a lame attempt to create plausible deniability. If nothing else, this phone call takes place a couple of years after Epstein and Trump had a falling out because of the real estate deal. So, Trump is feigning outrage, years after he knew what was going on.
Heads are rolling everywhere in the world, because of Epstein's connections -- except in the US and maybe in the oil countries. These are the two places where incredible wealth gives one a near total immunity.
Plausible deniability for what?
DeleteTotal immunity from what?
So, in 2006, Donald Trump, a private citizen foresaw that there would be big political scandal over Epstein and 20 years in future he would benefit from an CYA communication. Really?
DeleteIt is highly doubtful that call took place.
DeleteThe police chief's "recollection" occurred after Epstein was arrested, so I agree with the others, it was a phony story meant to provide Trump some plausible deniability from his long connection with Epstein and Epstein's illegal activities.
Yes, sadly, really.
DeleteEpstein has driven people out of their minds and made them abandon rational thought.
Ilya,
DeletePlausible deniability for what?
Total immunity from what?
What connections did Trump have to Epstein's illegal activities? Be specific.
DeletePlausible deniability for what?
DeleteThat Trump -- and others -- were aware that underage girls were being exploited. It's quite possible that some or most didn't know. Trump was Epstein's friend for about a dozen years or so. Spent a lot of time with him.
Total immunity from what?
Political/business consequences, such as what Mandelson is facing in Britain; the princess of Norway is facing in Norway. I guess some wealthy/prominent Americans have faced some consequences. However, Lutnick hasn't.
What did they do to suffer those consequences? You're pining for consequences for merely associating with Epstein, or are there specific crimes for which they deserve these consequences?
DeleteYou're in favor of guilt by association, in other words.
DeleteYour pining for an easy political win based on hysteria over factual evidence. That makes sense.
Delete3:29
DeleteWhat connections did Trump have to Epstein's illegal activities? Be specific
Easy political wins based on hysteria and guilt by association over factual evidence is basically what this whole thing has been about, politically speaking and anyway.
DeleteIlya, what consequences are you pining for Bill Clinton to suffer? Be specific.
DeleteIf you squint hard enough, you can miss the connections between Trump's money-laundering operations and Epstein's blackmail program.
DeleteTo the surprise of no one, the Epstein Files are a Who's Who of the Republican Party.
Delete
DeleteIt's more than "easy political wins based on hysteria". The fact is that the Democrat party is the main proponent of normalization of pedophilia.
It's aggressive projection, thief crying "stop thief!" That's what it is.
What Epstein blackmail program? Be specific.
DeleteWhat Republicans are incriminated in the files? How are they incriminated? Be specific.
DeleteIlya, what are the exact crimes that these Americans need to suffer consequences for? Be specific.
Delete3:29
DeleteWhat connections did Trump have to Epstein's illegal activities? Be specific
Trump played a pedophile on "The Apprentice", so of course he is one.
DeleteIlya, what are the exact crimes that these Americans need to suffer consequences for?
DeleteYou're pining for consequences for merely associating with Epstein
DeleteYes, particularly associating with him after his convictions, even if they claimed they knew nothing of the nefarious goings-on. The other thing to keep in mind, as the NY Times has explosed: Epstein was nothing but a conman and a fraudster. Again, something that should've been well-known.
For Clinton? Same as for Lutnick: I don't want him occupying the highest levels of government. Other than that, Clinton is a private citizen. If someone wants to take him off the board of their foundation or whatever, I couldn't care less.
PS: Let's consider how many "little" people lost their jobs when they posted something on social media about Charlie Kirk, which the right wing orthodoxy found unacceptable.
So you do believe in guilt by association and symbolic punishment. And you recognize that you are pining for this to happen to people who have not committed any crimes. That's what I thought.
DeleteYou can look back at this one day for proof that you became enmeshed in a mass moral panic and temporarily lost your mind.
Delete3:29
DeleteWhat connections did Trump have to Epstein's illegal activities? Be specific
"Let's consider how many "little" people lost their jobs when they posted something on social media about Charlie Kirk, which the right wing orthodoxy found unacceptable"
DeleteI would be glad to. How many? Be specific.
Ilya, what tenets of the Democratic party and progressive movement may be at odds with demanding extreme political and professional consequences for for merely associating with Epstein?
DeleteCan you think of any?
Anon@6:47 -- Are you denying that there were such people? If not, you're welcome to look for yourself. To note the most obvious example: Jimmy Kimmel was taken off the air for a little while. Teachers, nurses, professors and others lost their jobs of criticizing of Kirk after his assassination.
DeleteGuilt by association is how you describe it. Others would use a less charitable description: a profound failure of character and judgement. Essentially, Lutnick dug his own grave when he said that he immediately saw that Epstein was a horrible person. But then he continued to hang out with him.
Ironically, Trump was more than happy to jump on the "Epstein was a creep" bandwagon. He said that he distanced himself from Epstein when saw that Epstein was a "creep". So, did Lutnick not see it? Did he not care? Would it have been too much to expect Lutnick and others to distance themselves from Epstein? These were all very transactional friendships.
It's not like Lutnick is one of a kind and no one else could possibly do his job. It was always understood that people seeking high positions should exhibit some modicum of good judgement and character.
No, you wanted me to consider how many little people were fired. How many? Be specific.
DeleteNot just the little people like Jimmy Kimmel 😜
DeleteBut you're pining to have anyone who associated with Epstein suffer consequences. Would you rather change the topic from that to focus only on Lutnick?
DeleteWhat about Epstein's maids for instance? What consequences may they suffer staying in employment after his conviction?
DeleteTheir names are available. We could find them and ensure they suffer consequences. Is that something you would like? If not, where do you draw the line?
And what Democratic Party and progressive tenets would support bringing such consequences upon them?
DeleteIt's good to know that progressives and Democrats now call for administering consequences for failures of character and judgement.
DeleteIt's a little surprising but good to know. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteYes and you fail at that too.
Bob quotes Kim, who said the most cliched and common thing tons of people have been saying forever, yet Bob treats it as revelatory.
ReplyDeleteGet over yourself Bob, you are so out of touch.
Then Bob pretends that racism is no longer a thing, that Republicans have legitimate reasons for oppressing people of color.
Wow! This is Bob saying he is racist without saying he is racist.
Good to know, Bob.
Agree.
DeleteSomerby is not just an asshole, he is a racist asshole.
Yep. There was nothing particularly profound there. Seems like what every normal human should understand. On the other hand, in today's environment, such statements cannot be repeated often enough.
DeleteIt IS revelatory because she’s not righteously calling everyone names.
DeleteWho said racism is no longer a thing and that Republicans are OK?
DeleteSomerby? Exactly where?
I admire athletes and performers who use their celebrity to advance things they believe in, instead of flattering those in power. There is an Olympic tradition of calling out and boycotting racism and evil.
DeleteKim is speaking to Trump in a kind and gentle way that will go right over his head. Meanwhile, who can object to unity and love? Well, those criticizing Bad Bunny perhaps. So ask yourself why Somerby likes that message coming from Kim but not from Bad Bunny?
Note that Somerby is today implying that blue America is bad because we care about racism and ICE whereas those who just generically mention love are fine, as long as they include lots of praise of America in their model minority statements.
Somerby is an asshole for not perceiving why Kim's subservience makes many of us queasy while we celebrate Bad Bunny's pride in his heritage.
@1:55 Strawman much?
Delete"I have a question: has anyone from the mainstream press ever called on Donny to resign? there are plenty of reasons for Donny to be told to resign: he’s lawless, he’s a monster, he’s too fucking demented to do his job — and he’s got a serious dead pedo bestie problem. so where is the press?
ReplyDeleteI seem to recall that every time Joe Biden stubbed his toe, newspapers from coast to coast would demand that he step down, ‘for the good of the country.’
why does Donny get a free pass?
of course, Donny would never ever resign, not for any reason, not for a million years — that’s not how Mad Kings roll. but shouldn’t the media be calling for it? didn’t that used to be the job of a free press, to demand accountability?" [Tiedrich]
---------------
Why is Somerby discussing Bad Bunny when the Epstein files are revealing 9 year old victims and a Saudi who thanked Epstein for sending him a torture video? It is time to get serious about holding these assholes accountability. Meanwhile, Trump says he is going to make a bombshell speech about UFOs -- to distract from the Epstein Files of course. Crickets from Somerby. Is he busy with shoulder surgery again?
In 2002, Kid Rock was singing about having sex with underage girls. Perhaps he would have been a more appropriate half-time act, given Trump's dead pedo bestie problems this year?
Meanwhile, Somerby in his essay plays the same game as Gutfeld does on his show. And he keeps using the tasteless phrase "proof of life" with his own special meaning, ignoring the pain of those whose loved ones have been disappeared without a trace. Yes, Guthrie, but also the many (70,000+) snatched from the streets by guys in masks, with weapons, and apparently no interest in seeing anyone's documentation (at least, until they beat them up, shoot them, or terrorize their kids). Crickets from Somerby about that -- and Guthrie's disappearance is just another true crime show to Somerby, a way to bash CNN.
Epstein Epstein Epstein.
DeleteIs that all there us? What a creepy obsession.
“Is”
DeleteFreudian slip?
DeleteNo, tiny keyboard trying to quickly address the mindless mob around here.
DeleteI agree. We should be spending much more time scrutinizing Trump policy and the wreckage it has left behind in trade, relations with western allies, human rights in this country, decimating funding for the sciences, etc.,etc.,etc.
DeleteOr the national debt.
DeleteHandwaving one of the most notorious sexual predators in history, is not a good look.
DeleteAnd it was the right wing that was so obsessed with this, until they found out it implicated Trump and his gang.
DeleteTrump might have hung-out with Epstein, because they are both white supremacists.
DeleteNot because Trump, the self-proclaimed sexual predator, was involved with Epstein's under-age girls.
"Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick faces zero consequences for lying about his contact with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The files reveal family trips, business deals, and charitable donations between Lutnick and Epstein, contradicting his claims that he cut off contact with him in 2005." [Sam Stein, Catharine Rampell]
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile Raskin said:
"“I think that the DOJ has been in a cover-up mode for many months and has been trying to sweep the entire thing under the rug … there’s no way you run a billion-dollar international child sex trafficking ring with just two people committing crimes.”
Epstein had staff and accomplices. Why don't we know about them? Why aren't they being tried and jailed? Why don't Republicans care about this?
Once Trump was implicated in the Epstein files, Republicans stopped caring.
DeleteMost of his accomplices were women btw — who but for Maxwell all turned on him and are now oh so righteous.
DeleteThis implies the women could give consent. Being underage means you are incapable of doing so, legally and according to developmental psychology. Do you suppose someone being tortured has given consent? Consent obtained under coercion is also not legally consent. Accomplice does not mean the same thing as victim, in this context.
DeleteThis is what rapists always say. She wanted me. She enjoyed it too. She knew what she was doing. She led me on. Etc etc. They say this about children too.
The video of the Obamas that Trump posted was clearly racist. It appealed to a significant part of his base, which makes them racist.
ReplyDeleteIs there a significant number of people who dislike Bad Bunny because he’s Latino and “not from here”, despite being from Puerto Rico? Of course.
Is there a significant number of people who want Hispanic immigrants gone because they dislike Hispanics? Of course.
This is who Scarborough is talking about.
And Somerby gets offended at this truth.
Also, he asks “ is it all we really have? “ if Somerby paid attention to what Democrats are actually saying, including those winning in red districts right now, he wouldn’t ask this question. Nor would he assume that Joe Scarborough speaks for “us.”
"At any rate, Joe was trashing the bigots again. Over here in Blue America, it sometimes seems like that's the only reaction we have."
ReplyDeleteConflate much?
Somerby doesn't grasp that if you are going to be a bigot, you are going to criticized for it by non-bigots (or people with different targets for their bigotry).
DeleteYou fight racism by calling it out. As we can all see, Somerby doesn't like that when it happens to him. That tactic was successful in reducing racism in our culture (prior to Trump's election), including hate crimes. Somerby think Trump gives him permission to be bigoted. It doesn't. Anti-racists are still going to call bigots what they are. Two steps forward and one step back, but we are still going forward with this, especially after Trump leaves office.
Calling someone a “bigot” when they say that there could have been better Super Bowl bookings than Bad Bunny is exactly the problem.
DeleteNo, letting someone say that there were better bookings when the guy just won 3 grammys, including Best Album at the Grammys, overlooks the racism inherent in saying someone else was better. There was just a contest to see who was best and he won it. So, what other criteria are being applied? The most obvious one is race.
DeleteWhen Somerby doesn't specify what exactly he finds unsuitable about Bad Bunny, he leaves himself open to the most obvious conclusion. That is bigotry.
So now questioning Bad Bunny and saying that other acts might have been a better choice there is racist?
DeleteSounds like the people who called Hitler "anti-semitic", just because he killed over 6 million Jews.
Delete“When Somerby doesn't specify what exactly he finds unsuitable about Bad Bunny, he leaves himself open to the most obvious conclusion. That is bigotry.”
DeleteSo that’s the level of argument now? An automatic default to “ You’re a bigot!” ?
Which btw is exactly the kind of mindless self-righteous name calling that Somerby is talking about.
How about that Bad Bunny’s work is kind of dumb and shallow and audience-limited? I can think of a dozen acts that would have more popular appeal.
Nothing wrong with him being there, but nobody can even question it? Or else…?
Yes. Especially when you give no reason why a different act would have been better. Especially when the same argument isn't used with other artists. Given that tastes vary, why should your taste in acts prevail over those of other people? Recall that Bad Bunny won Album of the Year, implying that he was considered the best by those giving out that award (presumably musicians). So what makes your taste superior to theirs? You still haven't explained.
DeleteThe clue is that Somerby claimed yesterday that Bad Bunny’s halftime show might have caused a few percentage points to swing back in Trump’s favor. So it is illogical to assume that that swing was simply because the people don’t like bad bunny’s music. Somerby made it political, and it is political because those people must have objected to bad bunny himself.
DeleteCecelia’s Old Man, “conflate much”? We have ten kids together.
DeleteWhenever Gutfeld makes some sexist/misogynistic remark, Somerby attacks the “blues” for not calling it out.
ReplyDeleteYet, when “blues” do call out misogyny, Somerby accuses them of dropping the “m” bomb and asks “ is this all we really have? “
Excellent point.
DeleteSomerby is not dumb, there is some reason he makes such obvious logical fallacies.
You can not take Somerby's words at face value.
DeleteSomerby does not want things like sexism and racism called out, he wants Gutfeld called out for negatively impacting Republican branding.
The problem is that when you call everything you don’t like “misogyny” and “racism” there’s not a whole lot of critical thinking going on.
DeleteWho called tapioca pudding "misogyny" and/ or "racism"?
DeleteI must have missed that.
They still haven't explained how posting photoshops of Obama with a bone through his nose is the least bit racist.
DeleteFuck off
DeleteAsk Tim Scott.
DeleteThe problem when you call out sexism and racism, is that it hurts sexists and racists.
Deletewomp womp

Delete“ 4 months after Trump pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, Forbes reports that Binance now holds $4.7 billion of the $5.4 billion supply of Trump’s World Liberty Financial stablecoin. That is 87%. It is the largest corruption scandal in the history of the US presidency.”
ReplyDeleteNeither Somerby nor DiC mention this sort of thing, ie, Trump’s corruption.
It’s all over “blue” media.
DiC is a foreign troll, he only mentions what is in the scripts he is handed.
DeleteWhen balance sheets and P&L statements are calculated using snowflakes whining about losing their white privilege, and not basic math, corporations will become biased towards the Right.
DeleteBet on it.
Bad Bunny won three grammy awards, including album of the year, but he isn't fit to do the Superbowl halftime show, but that's got nothing to do with racism according to Somerby?
ReplyDeleteAll of the recent halftime shows have included lewd dancing because that is what such shows do now. The dancers did not have revealing costumes and there were scenes of Puerto Rican village life (cafes and markets), a wedding reception, a family and young child who was presented with Bad Bunny's grammy statue, and mostly Bad Bunny in a white suit singing his famous songs to the camera. There was nothing remotely untasteful in his act, although some would consider the fact of his being Puerto Rican political. So, on what basis does Somerby call his performance unsuitable? He doesn't say, which means we must guess and there are no good answers that don's show Somerby to be xenophobic and anti-Puerto Rican. And no, that is not an OK viewpoint. It is anti-American to single out a group in our culture and cell them unsuitable to perform after being awarded such accolades and being immensely popular. So, Somerby is a racist, doesn't explain, and expects others to share his views. How cutely right wing is that?
You don't have to like Bad Bunny's music, but saying that he shouldn't be performing under the circumstances is ludicrous and has no clear explanation, nor does Somerby offer one. Bigots seem to always assume that it is normal to be bigots like themselves. It is creepy and wrong.
Perhaps Southern good ole' boys think they own football, but both of the Super Bowl teams were from the north, blue states (Seattle and New England). Country music would have been inappropriate, in my opinion. The South seems to think that their culture is the only one that matters. But 38.9% of US residents are from Southern states, which makes them a minority. In contrast, 20% of US residents are Hispanic (not immigrants) and speak Spanish, and 37% of all Americans are hiphop fans compared to 41-52% who like country music.
DeleteI don't think Somerby has much of an argument about the suitability of Bad Bunny. If Somerby didn't watch the halftime show, then he missed out because the game itself was pretty boring (in football terms). That makes him like the 20-40% who say they watch primarily for the ads.
We went to a super bowl party with family and neighborhood friends and their kids. It was a lot of fun. I weep to think about solitary Somerby cleaning his house (for 3 hrs?) during halftime because he doesn't understand what the game is all about. What does he do for Christmas?
No one said he “shouldn’t.” Somerby didn’t. There could have been better acts.
DeleteHow is there a better act than the guy who won Best Album of the year at the Grammys?
DeleteMany people go to see a show because they haven't seen it before and want to experience something new and interesting. Bad Bunny was that for many people, who enjoyed the show because it was new to them. Novelty is a valid criterion too.
DeleteI can think of a lot that could be better. Whatever, let him perform. He was OK.
DeleteBut when simply questioning his selection or style is immediately viewed as racism and bigotry then things have gone too far. There’s no debate allowed — just bullying from the mob.
Somerby’s completely correct about the constant name calling and how annoying/counterproductive it is. It’s also stupid.
They should have had Senator Warren perform the halftime show.
DeleteNot everybody who criticizes the choice of Bad Bunny for a Super Bowl halftime show is a bigot.
DeleteEvery Republican voter is a bigot.
If you can't see the difference, I'm not sure what to tell you.
So, you are saying there is a difference between a killjoy and a bigot?
DeleteIf Bad Bunny had not just been acclaimed by the Grammy's you might have a point that this is just a matter of taste, but that is not the case. Out of all the music up for consideration, Bad Bunny was voted "Best". It is fine to say you don't like hip hop, but you don't get to say anyone else was better after that decision. That's what makes it racism. Race trumps talent. It shouldn't be that way.
DeleteHere is a reasonably open-minded review of the TPUSA halftime show:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.dailykos.com/stories/2026/2/9/2367934/-Let-s-talk-about-that-weird-other-halftime-show
"Unfortunately, Barrett’s medium high point was followed by Lee Brice, who performed his brand-spanking new single, “Country Nowadays"—a whiny anthem about a middle-aged right-winger lamenting his oppression by wokeness, all while pretending to be totally unbothered by it all, and it has weird anti-trans lyrics like:
I just want to cut my grass, feed my dog, wear my boots
Not turn the TV on, sit and watch the evening news
Be told if I tell my own daughter
That little boys ain’t little girls
I’ll be up a creek in hot water
In this cancel-your-ass world
Finally, it was time for headliner Kid Rock to perform his 1999 hit “Bawitdaba.” Rock appeared in jorts and lasted approximately two minutes, intermittently lip-synching poorly over a prerecorded track of his song.
Rock then took an extended break while a string duo filled the void, before returning in slacks and being reintroduced as Robert Ritchie. He followed this metamorphosis by performing a cover song of Cody Johnson's 2021 hit "Til You Can't."
The “All-American Halftime Show” ended with a memorial tribute to Charlie Kirk. Adding to the weirdness of it all was the absence of Kirk’s widow and current CEO of TPUSA, Erika Kirk, who never appeared. Maybe she was busy watching Bad Bunny. "
I suppose Somerby thinks that was more appropriate?
The Right are the snowflakes they warned us about.
DeleteJanuary 2026: worst layoffs since the Great Recession.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Trump.
"MILAN (The Borowitz Report)—Donald J. Trump celebrated at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday after winning the gold medal in the downhill presidency.
ReplyDeleteTrump beamed as he stood on the winners’ podium, boasting, “Obama never won this.”
Notching a historic win, Trump set a new speed record for driving the world’s strongest economy into a ditch.
Despite his victory, he remained bitter about the Super Bowl halftime show, telling reporters that “Bad Bunny took a job away from an American bunny.”
Andy Borowitz shows Somerby what political humor is like when well done.
Unfortunately, this is read, not humor:
ReplyDelete"On Thursday morning he [Trump] gave a crazed speech at the National Prayer Breakfast, telling attendees, among other things: “They rigged the second election. I had to win it. I had to win it. I needed it for my own ego. I would’ve had a bad ego for the rest of my life. Now I really have a big ego, though. Beating these lunatics was incredible, right? What a great feeling, winning every swing state, winning the popular vote. The first time, you know, they said I didn’t win the popular vote. I did.”
It should go without saying (but I’ll say it anyway) that anyone with a mental or personality disorder merits our compassion. But compassion doesn’t necessarily extend to putting such people into positions of high governmental responsibility, or keeping them there. The 25th Amendment was enacted to allow their timely removal from office." [Robt Reich]
real (not read -- typo)
DeleteIt’s fucking disgusting what he has done to the prayer breakfast which had been totally non- partisan. You should read what he said about democratic voters.
DeleteAll of the govs are now refusing to meet with Trump in Washington, because he has excluded Democrats. Good for them!
DeleteTrump supporter and friend of Trump Kid Rock wrote a song about his love for children, here are the pertinent lyrics:
ReplyDeleteYoung ladies, young ladies
I like 'em underage, see
Some say that's statutory
But I say it's mandatory
This dovetails well with Trump's history of sexual assaults on minors.
At this point, if you support Trump, you are deeply immoral.
Fox News host Greg Gutfeld has called for a Jewish Super Bowl halftime show that would culminate in a “live circumcision.”
ReplyDeleteNo ethnic cleansing of entire populations?
DeleteThat seems anti-semitic.
A Jewish halftime would run longer than Israel's so called ceasefire.
DeleteWeddings are joyous shared occasions. A circumcision is a solemn religious ceremony in which an infant boy is accepted into his faith community:
Delete"Jewish circumcision, known as Brit Milah (or bris), is a foundational religious ritual and commandment (mitzvah) performed on infant boys, usually on their eighth day of life. It symbolizes the eternal, physical covenant between God and the Jewish people, originating with Abraham. This act represents a commitment to Jewish identity, faith, and the, with the removal of the foreskin serving as a marker of sanctification and a dedication of the child's life to God." [AI]
In contrast, non-Jewish infants are circumcised in the hospital as a medical procedure at birth. Gutfeld is 1/4 Jewish on his grandfather's side, but considers himself non-religious. Until he mocks Christians on his show, I believe he is showing anti-Semitism via disrespect for a solemn ceremony with religious meaning, that is not the least bit funny.
Men tend to laugh at circumcision jokes because the thought of losing part of their penis is terrifying to them (symbolizing a loss of manhood, power, authority). Castration is a metaphor in their lives for anything that diminishes them personally. Their fear of women is expressed by the vagina dentata, a set of teeth that would bite off the penis, according to Freud. So Gutfeld's "joke" actually expresses his own insecurities, as it does anyone who laughs at it.
They laugh because it’s funny. Nobody’s terrified.
DeleteNo normal, healthy person laughs at Gutfeld.
DeleteRepublicans suffer from shame about having undersized penises.
They mask this with edgy humor.
Sad.
@1:44 Some people study what makes something funny to those who laugh. Freud's speculation that there exists an unconscious part of mind has been supported empirically. That means, a person can be terrified unconsciouslly and not realize they are terrified, but it shows in their behavior, such as laughing (which is a release of tension) and choices people make.
DeleteThis is why Somerby should have studied some psychology at Harvard. People know so little about their own minds and it makes them misunderstand a lot of what happens in life.
"but it shows in their behavior, such as laughing"
DeleteHow exactly do we know that laughing reflects terror?
The idea is that there is tension, anxiety, around topics like sex. Laughter releases tension, and that release is pleasurable which reinforces the laughing, so people repeat the behavior of laughing. So people are more likely to laugh about things they have tension over. Little kids who are growing and gaining control over their bodies laugh when others fall down. Social awkwardness, inclusion and embarrassment are of concern to teens so the jokes are about that. People who worry about bodily functions laugh at poop and fart jokes. You can tell what people worry about by what they laugh at.
DeleteIt is a generalization that right wingers have more fear of death than the left, so they will laugh at Biden-is-old jokes because of anxiety about aging and death. And they worry about manliness and rejection by women, so more fat jokes to cut women down to size and digs at what they fear in themselves (girly men). Gutfeld reflects all the right wing anxieties.
Somerby didn't think the act was perfectly suited to the occasion. Note the weasel word "perfectly". It makes his statement meaningless, because what is ever perfectly suited to anything and what exactly was the nature of the occasion? And yes, people are allowed to disagree in their reactions to the show. But when Somerby calls Bad Bunny unsuitable, he is being racist and he should be willing to admit his own racism, under the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way someone could have missed Bad Bunny's message of love because it was spread across the jumbotron at the field and repeatedly shown in the coverage of the show for viewers at home. There was a wedding on stage, which is an act of commitment out of love for another person. There were people showing love of their village and neighbors. There were people showing love of a child (who Bad Bunny gives his grammy to). And then there was a scene where everyone on stage showed love of America (listed all the countries comprising our continent) and spiking a football that had a message of love written on it (together we are America, note the word together). There had to be something wrong with a viewer who didn't see the messages of love throughout the show and explicitly spelled out for those who can read.
So what was wrong with Somerby that he couldn't see this? He had to be deliberately not trying, to miss it. He had to have hate in his heart, which is the essence of bigotry. And how on earth is this unsuited to the occasion? We are in a period of division where half our country hates the other half along several dividing lines. We need more togetherism, not less. But Somerby pushed away the opportunity.
And this is yet another reason why I dislike Somerby. His smarmy praise of Chloe Kim is offensive. Americans have been embracing Korean culture, just as they have embraced so much that is Puerto Rican (see the dance episode of Will Trent, about Salsa in Atlanta, GA). Somerby's white supremacy is obsolete and the American people are leaving him and his racism behind. Today, it is not perfectly well suited to our times. Perhaps it will be found entirely unsuited soon.
Well said.
DeleteIs this coming from a parody account?
ReplyDeleteWhile Somerby is not sincere in his writing, it is not parody nor satire.
DeleteSeveral days ago, Trump said he was just informed of a major break in the Guthrie kidnapping case, and that there would be an announcement about it shortly.
ReplyDeleteWell, days and days have passed and nothing came out.
Turns out Trump was full of bluster once again, this time cruelly giving false hope to those suffering already.
Instead of noting this Trump fumble, Somerby prefers to hint at Annie Guthrie somehow being involved.
Somerby weirdly refers to a "special type of photo inside Annie Guthrie's home", says it is discussed in Hunt's show - "See Hunt's text, above." - but Hunt in fact never discussed any "special type of photo".
Somerby seems as out to lunch as Trump does.
On Ari Melber today, they discussed the alleged phone call to the Miami Beach police chief where Trump said of Epstein 'everyone knows he's been doing this' and that Ghislaine Maxwell was 'evil'.
ReplyDeleteThey then played a tape of Trump in 2019 telling reporters he'd known nothing about Epstein's sexual activity with underage girls.
How to square that circle? Any MAGA geometricians out there that can help?
