GENDER: She was 12, and her brother was 9!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2026

Ramaswamy moves in: Last evening, we were negatively impressed by the way Anderson Cooper reported the basic facts of the case—by the initial way he presented the latest appalling events from the gubernatorial race in Ohio.

When Lauren Fox reported live and direct from that state, her performance wasn't much better.

Later in the segment, it fell to former Republicans Gretchen Carlson and Alyssa Farah Griffin to build appropriate context around the appalling behaviors at issue. Freed up now to express his personal view of the events in question, Cooper also joined in.

There was no dispute about the squalor of the campaign ad at issue:

COOPER (10/20/26): I do want to just talk to the panel about this. I mean, this has got to be the most disgusting ad I've seen.

GRIFFIN: Honestly, the grossest ad I can think of. I was racking my brain for something worse. I don't—anyone behind it should be ashamed.

[...]

CARLSON: In the last ten years since MeToo has come to life, and as somebody who works in the sexual assault space, I've never seen anything like this.

On this morning's Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski spoke with outrage but also with control about the events in question:

"When you look at the whole story, it’s almost hard to believe how depraved this effort is," she said. Speaking of the campaign which created the ad, she added this:

“There seems to be no lie too ugly for them. No trauma they won’t weaponize. No line they won’t cross for power.”

But then, increasingly so it goes inside this endangered nation.

David Gilmour provides videotape of Brzezinski's full remarks in this report for Mediaite. (Three cheers for David Gilmour!) The headline on his report reads like this:

‘As Sick as It Gets!’ Mika Brzezinski ‘Shook’ By Ramaswamy’s ‘Depraved’ Attempt to ‘Dirty Up’ Rival with Her Past Trauma

For the New York Times account of this matter, you can just click here.

The background to this event looks like this:

Dr. Amy Acton, 60 years old, is the Democratic Party's nominee in the current race for governor of Ohio. She's a former director of the Ohio Department of Health.

Dr. Acton has earned the right to be held in high regard. It isn't clear that her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, still just 41 years of age, rises to that level at this point in his noisy, loud, boisterous life.

The backstory here involves a basic set of facts. We're sorry to report this fact:

Dr. Acton's stepfather was indicted for raping her when she was 12 years old. (And yes, that's right—indicted.) We'll let this Associated Press report present the other basic facts about Ramaswamy's appalling new ad—and yes, that astonishing headline is accurate:

Ramaswamy takes responsibility for ad with Amy Acton’s mother and will spend millions to promote it

[...]

The advertisement features Acton’s birth mother, Donna Arthur, calling her “a liar” and insinuating she has mental health issues. Acton, Ohio’s former public health director, has made no secret of facing homelessness and abuse as a child. Arthur lost custody of her children after their stepfather was indicted for raping Acton.

[...]

Acton spent Tuesday condemning Ramaswamy for the ad even before his campaign confirmed its provenance.

“I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about, who today just released an ad using my birth mother, who I was removed from at the age of 12 for severe abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse,” she told Spectrum News, a cable news outlet in Ohio.

[...]

Acton’s campaign released a statement from her brother, Philip Stearns, who said the two were removed from their mother Donna Arthur’s custody as children after their stepfather, Arthur’s husband, was indicted for raping Acton as a child. Acton has not seen Arthur, whose last known address was in Pennsylvania, since they were in a courtroom together in 1978.

Later Tuesday, the Acton campaign released a video featuring Stearns, who recalls his older sister taking “the worst” of the abuse they faced as children in order to protect him and disparages Ramaswamy and his allies for exploiting the situation.

According to police and court documents obtained by The Associated Press, Cledith Arthur was arrested and charged with the rape of his stepdaughter, then 12, in July 1978, after Acton’s biological father reported him to authorities. The abuse allegedly happened from December 1976 to April 1978.

Cledith Arthur pleaded not guilty. He was indicted by a grand jury that September, but failed to show at a court hearing and remained a fugitive until at least 1981. He has since died.

Out of the gloaming came the man Ramaswamy, running well behind in the polls and hoping to turn things around.

Pity the state of Ohio! In 2024, it was Ohio which JD Vance used at the set for his astonishing claim—he later acknowledged that he'd known it was false—that Haitian guest workers were eating one city's pet cats and dogs.

This week, along comes this other being with this ugly, deranged campaign ad.

That said, our nation exists in a world of such hurt in this, the age of Trump. And that president; whose behavior is plainly stranger by the day, is going to be in office for two more years plus two more months after the events of November 3.

“I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about," Acton said.

Last evening, on a Fox News Channel "cable news" program, a 61-year-old San Mateo boy—a San Mateo child who has long needed help—decided to offer this otherwise puzzling joke:

GUTFELD (10/20/26): A new study shows that children who grew up with positive experiences have a lower risk of depression when they get older.

And an earlier study shows that children who grew up with negative experiences should just keep their traps shut.

We don't know why this misogyny-adjacent nutcase decided to go with this "joke." Is he nutty enough to have been aiming at Acton?

Yes, he actually is—and no one in all of Blue America is willing to discuss what he and his various stooges do on his nightly primetime program.

Our country currently lives in a world of deeply threatening hurt. The people who get sold to us Blues as reporters and commentators are an ongoing part of this problem.

Tomorrow: Back to The Five (we hope)

    26. Anonymouse 3:19pm, you’re supposedly the expert here as to this matter, even as you accuse others of ignorance. Here what AI says as to Mama Acton:

No public court records or investigative reporting show that Donna Arthur (Dr. Amy Acton’s birth mother) was ever criminally convicted of child abuse or neglect. However, there is some ambiguity in the historical record regarding whether she was initially arrested or charged alongside her husband.
Publicly available records and statements outline the following:
      • Arrest and Custody Loss: In 1978, authorities legally removed Amy Acton and her brother from Donna Arthur's custody. This action followed a grand jury investigation into severe child abuse and neglect in the home.
      • The Stepfather's Charges: Court documents confirm that Acton's stepfather, Cledith Arthur, was arrested and indicted on criminal charges for sexually abusing the 12-year-old Acton. After pleading not guilty, he posted bond and fled the state, remaining a fugitive until his death.
      • Conflicting Reports on Initial Charges: Dr. Acton recently stated in interviews that both her mother and stepfather were initially arrested and that her mother was "charged in the rape case" before the couple fled to Pennsylvania. However, public legal databases do not contain an active or resolved criminal child abuse conviction for Donna Arthur. Her loss of parental custody was permanent because she chose to stay with her husband rather than protect her children.

      Delete
    27. Trump has yet to be convicted on most of his crimes too.

Some of his crimes involve sexually assaulting minors.

To be fair Trump has said he draws the line at age 12.

I'm old enough to remember the White killers of Emmett Till getting off scot-free.

Here is what AI says about the mom Donna Arthur:

The mother would have been charged with endangering children under Ohio Revised Code § 2919.22(A). She was the children’s parent, the stepfather sexually abused them, she knew and did nothing, and the children suffered severe abuse and neglect. Her failure to protect violated her parental duty of protection and created a substantial risk to the children’s health or safety. Her inaction would not be treated as legally irrelevant simply because the stepfather was the person who directly abused them.

The flight with the stepfather would be an additional charge: obstructing justice under § 2921.32. That statute covers knowingly providing transportation or other means to help someone avoid discovery or apprehension, as well as harboring or concealing that person, when done with the purpose of hindering discovery, apprehension, or prosecution. The statute expressly allows prosecution even if the person helped is never apprehended, charged, or convicted.

AI's conclusion: The reasonable conclusion is that the authorities did not regard her as merely an uninvolved parent. The children’s permanent removal indicates authorities saw a case serious enough to pursue both criminal accountability and permanent protection of the children. The mother’s inaction supports an endangering-children prosecution; her flight with the stepfather to avoid prosecution supports an obstructing-justice prosecution. The clearest inference is that authorities intended to prosecute both parents.

This aligns with what Dr. Acton says which is that both were arrested and charged but then they fled to another state to avoid prosecution.

  5. I object to this statement by Somerby:

"Last evening, we were negatively impressed by the way Anderson Cooper reported the basic facts of the case"

There is no wrong way to report basic facts and Anderson Cooper is right to be emotional about what should be emotional for all of us, the rape of children.

If Republicans vote for the guy attacking a survivor of rape because of such ads and accusations, they are joining the other Republicans who are colluding to conceal the Epstein Files and who are supporting Trump despite his being named repeatedly in those files, including by survivors who say they were 13 when he raped them.

Republicans should not be supporting child rapists. That is the position the Republican attacks have put their voters in, having to vote against a wronged person and support the party that now stands for and excuses child rape.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The Republicans are an entire party of men and voters who are suppressing the Epstein files in order to protect the perpetrators of child rape. Several of Epstein's victims have accused Trump himself of raping them at age 13. I am sure the Republicans wish that all of these then-children would keep quiet about what the president, Epstein and his various other clients did. Epstein was protected and Trump is still being protected by men in his party. (Some Republican women, such as MTG voted to release the files.)

It is entirely consistent that Republicans would now be telling Acton to shut up about her past abuse, after making a commercial that accuses her of being mentally ill. But this is a bad look for the right. It puts empathetic conservatives in the difficult position of voting for a Democrat or voting for pedophile protectors. There are some right wingers who won't be able to stomach what is being done to Acton, in the name of winning a race they can't win on their own merits.

"Last evening, we were negatively impressed by the way Anderson Cooper reported the basic facts of the case..."

But Somerby never quite gets around to telling us what Cooper said that was wrong. And why single out Cooper for saying what nearly everyone else not Republican was already saying? I suppose Somerby might be complaining because Anderson Cooper didn't discuss Gutfeld, but why pick on Cooper if no one was discussing Gutfeld? This, coupled with years of Cooper-bashing, makes me suspect that Somerby is once again chiding Cooper because he is gay (like other Somerby targets Rachel Maddow, Don Lemon, and Charles Blow).

If Somerby is going to call out a specific journalist for wrong doing, shouldn't he at least quote (preferably) or describe what that journalist did? It seems only fair.

The woman continues a successful career as a researcher at MIT, the man was fired from MIT and could only find work in the private sector.

This was not a case of false allegation.

A survey done by their employer found multiple women complaining of sexual harassment from the man: "Sabatini either personally engaged in sexually explicit and inappropriate discussions or fostered an environment that tolerated—or promoted—such inappropriate discussions and that he threatened those who might report his conduct."

A further official internal investigation came to the same conclusion: "The investigators determined, that Sabatini had "engaged in and otherwise tolerated sexist and sexualized work discussions with his lab," and that engaging in such discussions "was an implicit part of succeeding in" Sabatini's laboratory. They also concluded that there was a "culture of fear and retaliation" within the laboratory. They reported that Sabatini had "engag[ed] in sexual relations with a Whitehead Fellow" and violated several Whitehead policies, including its sexual harassment policy."

The man was fired. He tried to sue the institution but it was dismissed. Again, his civil case against the woman will likely be overturned.

He has since been backed by right wing billionaire Bill Ackman.

  9. This one's for DiC:

ABU FALAH, West Bank, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Clad in black and their faces masked, dozens of militant Israeli settlers burned olive trees and threw rocks at Palestinians in a coordinated attack on Friday on a village's harvest in the Israeli-occupied West Bank that injured at least two people, including a journalist.

Some 80 settlers, ‌some of them carrying gas canisters, descended from a hill above a terraced olive grove where villagers from Abu Falah had gathered to pick ripe fruit, a cherished annual tradition in Palestinian life, Reuters witnesses said.

The settlers took positions in front of the terraced lanes of olive trees. Some of them used slings to launch rocks towards Palestinian villagers, who descended towards the bottom of the hill before picking up and throwing stones to defend themselves.

"The settlers want to attack us and force us from our homes," said Moutaz Abdelhadi, 42, a farmer who witnessed the attack in Abu Falah.

Partway through the attack, at least two Israeli military jeeps sped through the area, kicking up dust as villagers ran out of their way.

The attack continued after the military's arrival, with Israeli soldiers firing tear gas in the direction of the Palestinians who had dodged the jeeps. The sound of live gunfire could be heard in the area, and a Reuters photographer saw at least one armed settler fire a gun.

But you don't so you joke about rape.

You know nobody likes you, so being edgy is all you have, you can not engage in good faith discourse.

    14. Anonymouse 6:11pm, well, you’re fatuous and everyone knows you’re part of an organized group of fatuous people. So there…

    17. No one thinks you are so delusional as to be unaware that no one here respects you Cecelia.

Recognizing you fail to gain respect, you lash out with pathetic edginess and lunacy.

In reality, we all get little pleasure out of observing you squirm and twist yourself into pretzels. Like an upside down beetle, low on energy and only struggling performtively. But we get a little pleasure. A chuckle here and there.

    2. It is antisemitic to conflate Zionists with Jews.

Zionism is a notion developed by Christians as a way to purge their countries of Jews.

Zionism is both racist and antisemitic.

  12. Why would blues complain about Gutfeld?

The only significant consequence of Gutfeld is that he makes Republicans look bad.

That is why Somerby complains about Gutfeld.

    1. Anonymouse 6:03pm, the same reason for Bob complaining about Rachel and others in blue media too, huh?
