HAPPINESS: Maybe by the end of the week!

First, though, INABILITIES: Say what? Shine on me, sunshine? Walk with me, world?

In our view, it was a good way to start a song. Sacred Thoreau was in a similar place when he penned the following words on the shore of Concord's famous Barron Pond.

It's the start of the fifth chapter in his famous book, Barron. For the original text, click here:

Solitude

This is a delicious evening, when the whole body is one sense, and imbibes delight through every pore. I go and come with a strange liberty in Nature, a part of herself. As I walk along the stony shore of the pond in my shirt sleeves, though it is cool as well as cloudy and windy, and I see nothing special to attract me, all the elements are unusually congenial to me. The bullfrogs trump to usher in the night, and the note of the whippoorwill is borne on the rippling wind from over the water. Sympathy with the fluttering alder and poplar leaves almost takes away my breath...

The writer felt "sympathy with the poplar leaves!" This is widely viewed as an excellent place to be.

But also, "Shine on me, sunshine / Walk with me, world!"  In our view, it was a beautiful way to start a song—a song which went to #1 on the country charts in 1972. We heard it again on the road back from Durham, years ago, after watching a certain second grader take part in a schoolwide spelling bee. At the time, she was the greatest kid in the world, tied with her younger sister, who was also the world's greatest kid.

We'll refresh you on the song by the end of the week. But also, we'll offer some thoughts on its relevance.

(At one time, the pond was known as Walden Pond. We've linked you to Thoreau's original text, which did include the word "trump.")

That song was a portrait of happiness. First, though, a different focus. First, we'll look at the inabilities which currently put us in danger.

We'll start today with an aggressive challenge to Bill Maher. It's voiced in an opinion piece by Mediaite's Michel Luciano.

As readers know—as we've often said—we've always admired Bill's enormous achievement. Today, though, Luciano can be spotted offering this, unflattering headline included:

Bill Maher Is Dining With Trump Again Because He’s a Willing Dupe

Bill Maher is heading to the White House to meet with Donald Trump again partly because, in Maher’s words, “he was like, really nice.”

The last time the ostensibly liberal Maher made the pilgrimage to D.C. to meet with Trump, he indignantly lashed out at those who criticized him for doing so. Speaking on HBO’s Real Time after the summit in April 2025, Maher noted that Trump has been engaging in a “trade war and disappearing people, ruling by decree, threatening judges, gutting the government with glee.”

But despite these actions, which Maher himself said he is disturbed by, Trump still managed to impress him.

“Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher told his audience at the time. “And why he isn’t that in other settings, I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer.”

And so on from there. Now for a bit of background:

Last week, during a Club Random chat, Bill said that the president has offered another dining invitation and that he's going to take it. At some length, Luciano says that Bill is wrong to do that.  He says that Bill is making himself "a willing dupe of a malevolent president."

We can't necessarily say that Luciano is wrong. For ourselves, we're going to focus on this part of Bill's statement from last year:

“Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher told his audience at the time. “And why he isn’t that in other settings, I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer.”

In our view, Bill was flat-out wrong about that—though also, stone-cold wrong. In our view, it is his place to try to answer that deeply consequential question. We'd even say it's been his responsibility to try to fashion an answer.

Why does the sitting president do the things he does? It's too late to avoid the disasters which may follow November's mid-term elections. But Bill was saying he doesn't know, and that "it's not his place to answer."

We're in awe of what Bill has achieved. But we'll call that spectacularly wrong.

We'll discuss INABILITIES all week long. Tomorrow, we'll start right there, with that.

Tomorrow: What, him interview a specialist?

Right, spectacularly... Bob and his fellow retarded Dumbocrats found one Dumbocrat not affected by TDS.

And they are shocked, their whole worldview is shattered!

    Funny...

  3. How would Maher know why Trump is the way he is? If there is actually something wrong with Trump, it seems to me the primary responsibility falls on those who work closely with him and observe him close up to inform the press and the rest of us.

  4. At this point, Trump’s approval rating indicates that the public has judged Trump’s value for itself, without the aid of “specialists.”

IMO going after Trump’s lying and corruption is the more effective strategy than endlessly speculating about his mental health and pitying him, for God’s sake.

  5. Who cares whether Trump was nice to Maher at dinner? That changes nothing about who Trump is or what a political humorist should say about him.

Is Maher so easily flattered, so easily manipulated by a total asshole, just because he is well treated at dinner? It is the tragedy of the narcissist that all someone needs to do is flatter him, pay attention when he speaks, offer him the best wine, and he will eat out of your hand, without concern about whether it is Putin or Natalie Harp doing the flattering.

Somerby is a narcissist who will praise Maher to heaven if Maher just treats him like he matters. Maher is a narcissist who will change his mind and adore Trump if Trump treats him like he matters. Trump is of course a narcissist who will sell out everyone and everything just to be remembered after his death, even while those with any sense mock him and he destroys the nation to fulfill his own gradiose fantasies. Too many narcissists.

  6. Maher and Trump both like women on the young side:

"It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side,” Trump said about Jeffrey Epstein.

Bill Maher is single but has always dated women decades younger. "Maher has stated that his dating life is "not age-appropriate" and dismissed conventional relationship norms." As with all of these assholes, the age imbalance is always with themselves as the oldie and the women much younger, not with themselves dating older women. The function of the woman is to show the world that they are men who can attach a status symbol to their arm. It is the tacky gold trim Trump has decorated the oval office with, a visible signal of their own worth, bought by being a little bit gracious and throwing some money around.

Maher and Trump clearly have a lot in common and much to talk about at dinner.

Bill Maher seems to be auditioning for membership in the Epstein class, seeking an invitation to do ketamine with Elon while smirking at the peons.

And Somerby today applauds and says Maher has achieved remarkable things. And Somerby had the nerve to hint about character a few days back, as if he could recognize values or their lack himself. These guys deserve each other. Somerby has nothing to say on any of these topics, so it is just as well he is in a nostalgic haze today.

  7. While Somerby quotes Thoreau on the beauty of trees, Trump broke a court order to cut down 500+ trees on the Washington DC public golf course. Trump destroys everything he touches while Somerby moons over Thoreau, ignoring the destruction of the beautiful old trees that were part of our national heritage.

Along with the trees, Trump destroys our democracy while breaking his oath to protect the Constitution, by thumbing his nose at the courts who told him not to make any changes without informing the court. He broke the law by defying the court and cutting down those trees. But that is just another crime to the wealthy men who don't understand how long it takes to grow a tree or what function trees serve to those who can appreciate their beauty.

Somerby seems to write off everything Trump does that is evil, by attributing it to mental illness that is the fault of those who will not diagnose him (in public). Nothing is ever Trump's fault in Somerby's world. If Somerby cares so much about Thoreau's appreciation of nature, why is he not discussing that stupid idea of putting a ballpark in the Grand Tetons, a strikingly beautiful and different set of mountains, trees, valleys of Elk and buffalo? Why is Somerby not discussing Trump's inability to see the beauty in green nature, only gold, oil, and crypto? The comparison between Trump and Thoreau is so stark, but so is the comparison between Somerby and Thoreau, Somerby's pretense to admire nature while saying not a peep about Trump's desecration of Bears Ears or our other sacred places.

  8. Any asshole can be gracious and measured while trying to get something from another person. Maher doesn't see when he is being manipulated by Trump because he is blinded by his own narcissism, accepting the fawning as his due. Normal people would have alarm bells ringing loudly if someone were being extra special nice to them without any reason. They would wonder what that person was after, what they were up to, what they wanted. Trump clearly wanted Maher to admire him, to find nice things to say about him, after calling him orangutan spawn:

"In January 2013, Bill Maher joked on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that Donald Trump should provide a birth certificate to prove he was not the "love child of his mother and an orange-haired orangutan," noting that Trump's hair and an orangutan's fur shared the exact same shade."

Trump wanted Maher to take it all back (after losing a lawsuit for that purpose). And Maher dutifully did. He returned from their dinner with specious compliments about Trump, visibly changing his mind and all but endorsing him. And now he is going to do it again, while Trump is in a bind over the midterms. Maher is rescuing Trump with the bros in his audience, who might have been drifting toward sanity.

This is all so obvious. Can Trump be measured when he wants something? Look how Trump fawns all over Xi, Kim Jong Il, Putin, the dictators he admires. Of course Trump can be nice. He had to appease his father before him and learned suck up skills at home. Maher should see through this but his own hubris prevents it. Apparently Somerby is blind to it too.

  9. Here is another bit of background on Bill Maher, from People Magazine in 2020:

"Rose McGowan has come forward to accuse Bill Maher of impropriety.

McGowan, a leader of the #MeToo movement, tweeted on May 9 about an alleged interaction she had with Maher during an appearance on his late-night talk show Politically Incorrect in the 1990s.

"@BillMaher Here's a memory I'd like to share with you," she began. "I bet you don't remember, but I sure do. I was so excited to be on your show & get to flex my mind instead of my face. Here's what happened. All I can say, Bill, you got the face you deserved."

The actress, 46, attached the text to a Twitter draft, detailing the allegation.

"I was on your show Politically Incorrect in the late 90s — as the show returned from a commercial break, you leaned over to me & whispered in my ear, 'my parents didn't give me a good face, but they did give me a huge c---,'" she claimed. "I could feel your hot breath on my ear as an image of both your hideous face & alleged big c--- flashed in my mind. Both turned my stomach. I've always wondered what you say & do to the girls that aren't famous?"

Maher, 64, has not responded to McGowan's tweet. His rep did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment."

Somerby has several times said that #metoo is dead, no longer a thing. That is wishful thinking. The intersection between Maher, Trump and Somerby is dislike of women and a desire to remake "sexual politics" in their favor, as if it weren't already skewed that way. This is highly relevant to Somerby's inability to discuss the Cornell rapes with any clarity, beyond saying Robert Redford was nice to Scarlet Johanson when she was 13, showing respect for her and her horse because he didn't try to rape either of them.

  10. Tiedrich notes Trump's interest in men's bodies. At his Ohio rally yesterday, Trump said:

"“I don’t do this with men very often. I started examining his body, because I didn't know he was a great athlete. And I looked, and I watched up on down, and I looked at his ass.”

Fact check: Donny does do this with men, more and more. He drools over their bodies. It’s downright creepy. Remember during the 2024 campaign, when Donny never stopped salivating over the apparent ginormity of the 9-iron in Arnold Palmer’s pants?"

Trump was talking about Ohio Senator Husted, who was a Division II football player back in the day.

This is bizarre. Almost as bizarre as Somerby's discussion of sacred Thoreau and the trees.

Why is anyone pretending we need a specialist diagnosis of Trump's mental disorder? We need to get that guy out of office ASAP because he is dangerous to trees and to other living things.

  11. The fact that Trump was "gracious and measured” with Mahar suggests that when his behavior is the opposite, that was a choice. Something he can voluntarily turn on. His odd behavior is not mental illness; it's an intentional.

Why does he sometimes choose to be ungracious and unrestrained? I can only guess at possible motivations. I suspect it's a way of getting attention. Getting attention was a strategy that worked for him It got him elected as President.

    2. DiC, you seem to misunderstand the nature of his mental illness. As Bob points out, often quoting from Mary Trump, Trump has personality disorders, such as narcissistic personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder (which is sometimes called “sociopathy”), which are classified as mental illnesses. These lead him to crave attention and to manipulate people by lying or flattery, and can be expressed as cruelty.

      Delete
    3. I don't believe Trump has any control over his cruelty and obsessions.

We already know that Trump responds to flattery. Maher is not reporting the flattering things he had to say to Trump to get that gracious response from him. Many of us would feel demeaned by having to flatter someone's grandiosity like that.

Thump loves to be treated like a king or emperor-god or superhero. It is right there in the memes he posts on Truth Social, created for him by minions. When he is gracious to Maher, he is playing a role, being that beneficent, all-powerful figure. Maher groveled and Trump was gracious. That isn't how a president is supposed to relate to the people who put him in office, the people the president exists to serve.

Here’s how one Greek politician described the job the just-resigned Ambassador Guilfoyle has been doing:

“Guilfoyle is the export product of Trump’s America,” said Gabriel Sakellaridis, leader of the New Left party.
“It is the notion that “you all belong to us, and we will do whatever serves our interests in the energy sector—and even though it is at the expense of the overwhelming majority of the Greek people, you won’t say a word and will simply say thank you.”
