BREAKING: Life for some kids at one middle school!

TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2018

Good old P.S. MS-13:
On this morning's front page, the Washington Post offers a brilliant, 3000-word report on life in one middle school in the DC area.

Apparently, MS-13 is infesting the school. Congratulations to Michael Miller for a superb report.

Some kids are deeply afraid of going to school. To teach yourself to pity such children, you can just click here.

  1. What's with this constant think-of-the-children bs, Bob? Don't you ever get tired of it?

In this particular case, is it the problem that 'some kids are deeply afraid' (deeply! - yeah), or that gangs exist and operate with impunity?

    2. Mao is not a serious commenter, Mao does not believe any of his/her comments, they are drenched with irony and sarcasm. Mao is a laugh for progressives and liberals. Mao provides entertainment for Democratics. Mao's act is old and stale. Mao's lack of creativity indicates despondency.

Mao gets additional pay for every response Mao generates.

Enjoy a dinner out on me, Mao. Or a pee hooker if that floats your boat.

    3. Mao has been trolling on progressive blogs for years, and seems to have settled here after being banned at Crooked Timber. I usually just ignore him, but, sometimes I take pity on him for his hikikimori lifestyle.

    4. Yes, Mao. The GOP is the party of "Fuck children."

Which makes their accusation that Clinton was running a pedophile ring out of a DC area pizza parlor, just one more instance of Right-wing projection.

    5. Of course, all Right-wing accusations are confessions.

    6. Mao sounds much like my sociopathic brother. His greatest pleasure in life is engaging in argument (which George Lakoff compares to war) and trampling his opponent in humiliating defeat. Some times he signs off: Game, set, AND match AND THE WAR to JAKE!!!
Like Lex Luthor but without the brains.

  2. Some Democrats foolishly defended the MS-13 gang when Trump called them "animals". It's a mistake to reflexively dispute every single thing Trump says. Sometimes he's right.

    1. If you listen carefully to what Trump said about “animals,” it isn’t clear that he is referring to MS-13. In fact, it isn’t clear what group at all he is comparing to “animals” because his comments don’t follow what was said before him by his interlocutor and don’t make any sense in the conversation. This is another example of President Magoo making ill-defined, sweeping, and confusing statements, and then people projecting what the think Trump “means” onto them like a Rorschach test.

  3. hardindr - both CNN and AP --no friends of Trump -- acknowledged that Trump was talking about MS-13

CNN: As reported in the article above, Trump’s remarks late Wednesday were in response to comments about members of MS-13 and other undocumented immigrants who are deported for committing crimes.

The Associated Press: AP has deleted a tweet from late Wednesday on Trump’s “animals” comment about immigrants because it wasn’t made clear that he was speaking after a comment about gang members.

    1. Does it matter?
      H. R. McMaster, Trump's former National Security Advisor, and no friend of liberals, acknowledged that Trump is a "fucking moron" with "the brain of a kindergartner".

To be reading the tea leaves about what Trump really means is an obvious waste of time.

    2. This is what Trump was going for in his "remarks":

"A judge (Ricardo S. Martinez) tore into ICE for lying, ordering the government to restore Ramirez's DACA status and barring it from claiming that he was "gang-affiliated." He slammed ICE's case as

      •“completely contradictory"
      •based on "no evidence"
      •"most troubling"
      •"arbitrary and capricious"

The judge, a [George W.] Bush appointee, also found that ICE had egregiously violated Ramirez's right to due process.

When [ICE director Thomas D.] Homan praises officers who "defend this nation," he's talking about people like this—ICE agents who set up innocent people and lie in court." - Mark Joseph Stern, Slate - May 16, 2018 (via Twitter).

  4. If you read the transcript, which apparently nobody bothered to do, it is not clear who Trump is calling “animals.” His response after Sheriff Mims short statement do not follow what the Sheriff said and seem tangentially related, at best.

  5. It seems pretty clear that Trump was not specifically referencing MS-13, indeed he says who he is referencing:

    "people coming into the country"

Sheriff Mims does reference MS-13 and Kathryn Steinle as well. Trump and the sheriff seem to be misguided about the "people coming into the country", the immigrants coming into the country have a lower crime rate than even native born people, also the immigrant involved with the Kathryn Steinle incident was acquitted.

WSJ The Mythical Connection Between Immigrants and Crime

    Shooting of Kathryn Steinle

    THE PRESIDENT: Okay, Margaret?

SHERIFF MIMS: Thank you, Mr. President. You know, sheriffs in California are now in an untenable position when it comes to trying to figure out — now, we have state law, we have federal laws, and here we are stuck in the middle. Sheriffs, especially, because most of us run our county jails.

When there became a legal challenge to the 48-hour holds for ICE, it was very frustrating for us. So what I did is I invited ICE to put their officers in my jails so they’re able to do their work. We didn’t have the staffing to be able to help figure out who they wanted to talk to or didn’t. I said, come on in, work with our people to keep our community safe. Two weeks later, Mr. President, Kate Steinle was murdered.

Now, I wasn’t the only sheriff to do that. Sheriff Youngblood did, Sheriff Christianson. And it was perfect — because we didn’t have to take our time, with our staff, to do anything. ICE was in there doing their work in a safe, controlled, environment. And then, the initiatives started happening — the TRUST Act, the TRUTH Act, and finally, SB 54, the Values Act. And that is causing us all kinds of turmoil.

So here we are, stuck in the middle, trying to decide. We have federal law, we have state law. And that’s why I welcomed Attorney General Sessions’s lawsuit, because that will provide us the clarity that we need and direction that we need. What do we do? Because here we are.

And I appreciated Mr. Homan and ICE. We had a great relationship; we still do. But now ICE is the only law enforcement agency that cannot use our databases to find the bad guys. They cannot come in and talk to people in our jail, unless they reach a certain threshold. They can’t do all kinds of things that other law enforcement agencies can do. And it’s really put us in a very bad position.

    THE PRESIDENT: It’s a disgrace. Okay? It’s a disgrace.

    SHERIFF MIMS: It’s a disgrace.

THE PRESIDENT: And we’re suing on that, and we’re working hard, and I think it will all come together, because people want it to come together. It’s so ridiculous. The concept that we’re even talking about is ridiculous. We’ll take care of it, Margaret. We’ll win.

SHERIFF MIMS: Thank you. There could be an MS-13 member I know about — if they don’t reach a certain threshold, I cannot tell ICE about it.

THE PRESIDENT: We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in — and we’re stopping a lot of them — but we’re taking people out of the country. You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people. These are animals. And we’re taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that’s never happened before. And because of the weak laws, they come in fast, we get them, we release them, we get them again, we bring them out. It’s crazy.

  6. Here’s what Trump said:

We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in — and we’re stopping a lot of them — but we’re taking people out of the country.  You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are.  These aren’t people.  These are animals.

This was after a lament by a California Sheriff that California law limited his ability to work with ICE, the American Kripo. MS-13 was mentioned in passing. Now we do have people coming into the country (or trying to come in), and Kripo is stopping a lot of them and making sure they’re taken out of the country. Sometimes this amounts to puncturing water jugs left in the desert by humanitarian groups. Most of those ICE catches aren’t MS-13 or bad people.

Whom was Trump talking about? The grammar of his sentence refers to those crossing the border illegally. The context could imply that he was talking only about gang members. He has a habit of not making the distinction.

We know that Trump’s attention span, intellectual grasp of any subject, and social censor are in a race to the 0th percentile. This makes it hard to figure out what he’s thinking. But the Tiki-Torch Nazis and their sympathizers hear a clear message. And the ambiguity provides cover for people like our own moral and intellectual idiot from Cal to bleat excuses for the inexcusable and defense of the indefensible.

  7. deadrat: We know that Trump’s attention span, intellectual grasp of any subject, and social censor are in a race to the 0th percentile

If Trump was talking about gang members, his comment makes sense. If he was talking about all illegal immigrants, his comment makes no sense, unless you think he's horrendously prejudiced against all illegal immigrants. To me, that seems unlikely, since he married an immigrant.

I disagree with deadrat's comment. I do agree that Trump often speaks in a way that gives this impression, but his many impressive successes show me that his grasp of subjects is far from weak. Two other Presidents who spoke in a way that made them sound less intelligent than they actually were would be G.W. Bush and Eisenhower. They hid their education and sophistication, and the public loved them. OTOH Mitt Romney showed off his intelligence and education and lost the Presidential election.

So all you have to do to get hoards of republicans and a good measure of others to vote for you is to say stupid shit and act unintelligent. Have you thought about throwing your hat into the ring?

  8. Trump doesn't need to be "horrendously prejudiced against all illegal immigrants", to make a statement like that. He could be playing to his base.
    ------------
Trump's "many impressive successes" must entail his follow-through on his campaign promises.
    Let's see:
He ended up larding his cabinet with Wall Streeters, despite making a big deal about how they rigged the economy.
He has delivered NO alternative to ObamaCare, never mind something "better and cheaper".
Mexico has not payed for his wall.
    ---------
Agree that Trump might be just acting like a moron, because he (again) is playing to his base of morons and racist ignoramuses.
OTOH, his former National Security Advisor, no friend to liberals, says Trump is a "fucking moron" with "the brain of a kindergartner", so that does seem the prevalent opinion.
