Where do ugly claims come from?

MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2023

In part, from doctored edits like this: As you may know, Karine Jean-Pierre is the current White House press secretary.

Last week, she was accused—she was rather widely accused—of antisemitism on various Fox News programs. Below, you see the full exchange which gave rise to the charge:

JEAN-PIERRE (10/23/23): Go ahead, M. J.

M. J. LEE, CNN: Was the President briefed on Samantha Woll, the leader of a synagogue in Detroit who was stabbed to death?

JEAN-PIERRE:  So, obviously, our hearts go out to—to the family—to the families there.  It’s a devastating, devastating news story.

The President obviously is—is—just like everyone else is paying close attention and saw those reports.  I don’t have anything else to add.

Obviously, the investigation continues, and we are willing to assist in any way.  I just don’t have anything else beyond that.

LEE: What is his level of concern right now about the potential rise of antisemitism in light of everything that’s going on in Israel?

JEAN-PIERRE:  So, a couple of things. Look, we have not seen any credible threats. I know there’s been always questions about credible threats. And so, just want to make sure that that’s out there.

But, look, Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim have endured a disproportionate number of hate-fueled attacks. And certainly President Biden understands that many of our Muslim, Arab—Arab—Arab Americans and Palestinian American loved ones and neighbors are worried about the hate being directed at their communities.  And that is something you heard the President speak to in his—in his address just last—last Thursday.

And so, one of the things that the President has done is directed his team—Homeland Security teamto prioritize prevention and disruption of any emerging threats that could harm the Jewish, the Muslim, Arab Americans or—or any other communities.  And that is something that the President has sought to do and—and since day one.

As you know, the President ran on—on—on, you know, bringing communities—protecting communities, obviously, but bringing people together, the soul—protecting the soul of the nation.  And so that is something that the President takes very, very seriously.

And we—you know, we’re going to continue to denounce any sort of hate towards any American here.  And so, that’s what we’re going to continue to be steadfast on.  Again, he has—he has advised—directed his Homeland Security team to make sure that they’re on top of this.

That was the full, two-part exchange from which the charge of antisemitism was born.

During the exchange, Jean-Pierre denounced "any sort of hate towards any American." When she said that President Biden has prioritized the disruption of threats that could harm any community, she named the Jewish community first.

Has Jean-Pierre trafficked in antisemitism? It's an extremely serious charge, drawn from a strikingly slender bit of pseudo-evidence. Unless you choose to edit Jean-Pierre's statement the way Howard Kurtz chose to do on yesterday's MediaBuzz program:

LEE: What is his level of concern right now about the potential rise of antisemitism in light of everything that’s going on in Israel?

JEAN-PIERRE: Look, we have not seen any credible threats. But look, Muslim and those perceived to be Muslim have endured a disproportionate number of hate-fueled attacks.

As you can see by clicking this link, that's the way Kurtz presented the exchange to his Fox News viewers. Th rest of the exchange was disappeared.

If that had been the full exchange, we wouldn't use it as the basis for such a deeply serious charge. But that was a heavily doctored version of the full exchange.

Kurtz is much too smart not to know that. In a slightly better world, his ascot would be off the air.

Dropping bombs on people is easy and fun. Increasingly, both major tribes seem to know that.

  1. Bob will often disparage MSNBC for its high salaries given to its on air reporters ( call them stars or personalities if you want), and that’s
not to mention the frequent plugging of books and other outside projects. This is fair enough.
I cannot recall Somerby ever applying this same critique to Fox, where it is likely to be an even more pronounced corrupting factor. No doubt, some of them are sincere creeps with zero ethics, but that is unlikely the case with Kurtz. No offer from Newsmax is waiting in the wings equal to what Fox is paying him, so Howard knows he must toe the line.
This may have been a contributing factor in Fox’s massive libel pay out, but Bob has found it easy enough to avoid the subject.,

That’s quite an endorsement of Kurtz and of Fox News.

  2. IMO Jean-Pierre's response was bizarre. She was asked about anti-semitism, but she had nothing specific to say about it. OTOH she did specifically address Islamophobia, which was not even part of the question. It's pretty clear that Muslims rank higher than Jews in today's White House.

BTW I don't think Jean-Pierre or Biden knows that there are there are more instances of anti-semitism than of Islamophobia. Contrary to her answer, there have been a number of anti-semitic events. So much so, that Jews were advised not to go out on the street. As a Jew, I do not feel that the Biden Administration has my back. See

    3. Thanks for all that information, mh. I wish you had been giving that press conference instead of Karine Jean-Pierre.

i personally do not favor restrictions on social media. To me, it's like the telephone. The phone company can't monitor every call and censor the bad ones. There are too many calls. The same is true of social media.

Also, I don't trust social media to censor appropriately. E.g., we saw how vital information about Hunter Biden's laptop was inappropriately withheld from the public before the 2020 election.

    6. Plenty of media outlets that had no concern over chain of custody shared Hunter's dic pics, along with a Congresscritter waving it on the house floor. When asked about the large size, President Biden said, "that's my boy!"

  5. There is every reason for blaming the elite for hate crimes as they look the other way when they are done to acceptable nations. That constant high pitch screeching in politics is coming from the huge American intellectual -manager caste, entirely self aware. The one that drowns out intelligent thought so people only think in black and white.

The Communists have to perish before we can risk a national healthcare plan.
The Palestinians have to be absent before we can take a sigh that the Third Reich fell. And the third Reich said they were needed world could be safe. Turns out America agrees that they should move there too, "for their own safety" and reasons Joseph Biden says are extremely close to what our imagination "invented." (Asian-Arab-Black Cross culture Independence organization threatened profits in 1950-1970 after which US adopted the military that's committing genocide right now in 1973 for profits pretending to be humanitarian interest). The rationality is not in the shop so nobody can buy it in the first place.

Rather than see this greedy hysterical , solipsistic grudge nursing as a threat to people by instigating and escalation it's simply called "the good kind of discrimination."

We can't breathe and walk at the same time let alone chew gum. We have to wait for the tears to come before we even show humanity. Are you proud that you need that? Is that the best America can do?

  6. "Dropping bombs on people is easy and fun. Increasingly, both major tribes seem to know that."

This is an unfortunate choice of words for Somerby to use, given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. No one thinks real bombs are easy or fun. So why frame the dishonesty of Fox News in such terms?

And then Somerby blames the dishonesty at Fox on "both major tribes" without providing one shred of evidence that MSNBC misleadingly truncates quotes to distort the meaning of what someone has said.

However, I have seen Somerby pull this trick himself. He does it today with MLK's quote, taken out of context and without the subsequent explanation of what MLK means when he asks people to serve.

Every journalistic crime that Fox commits is also attributed to other cable news stations without any evidence at all. That is dishonest.

  7. US House Republicans plan to give Israel $14.3bn by cutting IRS funds
One of the first policy actions under the new speaker Mike Johnson is a partisan bill despite Joe Biden’s request for $106bn in joint aid

As David in Cal said, watch what Mike Johnson does, don't worry about who he is.

    1. Yes indeed. Those IRS funds in substantial part are aimed at revenue enhancing policing of high end tax evaders. So the republicans get to signal to their donors that they've got their backs with a bill that would worsen the debt, and simultaneously stick it to lower income citizens by eliminating a free tax filing part of that bill. Of course they know it won't get past the senate, so it's a typically cynical gesture. How about this idea: ask Israel, with universal health care and free secondary education to pay their own bills and borrow the money, insofar that we have neither and are paying for theirs with our hard earned tax dollars, money being fungible and all. They were told that building settlements on the West Bank was not in the interest of peace, by the US and EU, over and over. The marked increase in hostility and violence to West Bank Palestinians over the past year by Israeli settlers certainly played a role here. Now US bases are being shelled while Netanyahu and his ministers go on air proclaiming what a good friend they have in the US, having never paid heed to us, and with no intention to consider the two state solution advocated by the US, Europeans and others. As civilian casualties continue to climb in the thousands and Gaza is reduced to rubble, the humanitarian disaster will be placed in larger focus and our unconditional support for Israel, no matter what they do, will place US interests and citizens at risk. The barbaric atrocity of October 7 is a reminder of 9/11, and should be frightening for what may come.

    2. Bebe Netanyahu had complete and unfettered control over the Israeli government and security for 16 straight years. His head got so big that the country of Israel was not big enough for him so decided to stick his nose into our own domestic politics.

    3. 10:50. Agreed. I am surprised at how congenial Biden has been to Netanyahu after the stunt he pulled to try and embarrass Obama in 2016. It was a real breach for a head of state to go directly to the Republican based congress to issue his criticisms of a sitting president. Would never happen for a US president to show up in Israel and pull a stunt like that with an opposing party. Meanwhile in 2019 he was advocating for the funding of Hamas. And at one point released 1,000 Hamas prisoners in exchange for 1 Israeli soldier. What a corrupt and dangerous politician he turned out to be.
