BREAKING: Temporary suspension canceled!

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 2024

Services should resume: After a long afternoon off-campus, we returned to this nesting spot during a very dark 6 o'clock hour last night.

There may be a slight delay today. But services will resume.

Needless to say, our car doors are frozen shut this morning. (Yesterday, it served us well.) We've had the car for twenty years and this has never happened.

And no, it isn't an electric carPower locks to the people!

Update—why we mentioned the frozen car doors: We had to walk a few miles to fill a prescription this morning. As we told the worried analysts:

If it was good enough for Abraham Lincoln, it's good enough for us!

    1. At this point, I think I’m finally ready to agree with Bob about Trump.

    2. He probably meant Pelosi when he said Haley.

      Delete
    3. And he probably meant Biden when he said Obama too. We all know what the actual statement should be and that isn't the point. Trump is speaking in front of groups and he should be able to get these things right, as he was able to do the last time he ran for office. That's why people are pointing to this as a cognitive decline.

    4. And he thinks Pelosi is his opponent in the Republican primary.

    5. Trump also looks physically depleted via campaigning.

    6. Trump is neither physically nor mentally fit.

    7. Trump has only barely started campaigning. I'll bet he is depleted by the lack of sleep and having to deal with his various trials.

  2. In Boston, some black residents will soon have to walk longer distances to fill a prescription. See

    1. You do realize that Somerby is not black, right?

    2. And Somerby lives in Baltimore, not Boston.

    3. The right is blaming "rampant shoplifting" on CA state law that makes theft under $980 a misdemeanor instead of a felony. The right is making this sound like a new development but this has always been the law in CA, since I was a child growing up there in the 1950s. The right is claiming that businesses do not bother to prosecute shoplifters, but I grew up with signs in stores saying "Shoplifters will be prosecuted." If stores have discontinued that policy, it is not the fault of the law or the State of CA. Most stores have had security guards whose job is to detain and prosecute shoplifters among other offenses.

      And then there is this:

"Shoplifting in San Francisco is on the decline, according to a new study from the Council on Criminal Justice. The study covered reported shoplifting incidents from 2018 through the first half of 2023 in large metro areas, and it showed a 5% drop in San Francisco."

David, this is what disinformation looks like. You are a fool to believe what you heard on Instapundit and your other right wing propaganda outlets.

    5. @11:47 As a practical matter, under today's law, it's legally risky for a store security guard to detain a shoplifter.
The scope of a store security guard’s authority is also much different than that provided to a police officer. In general, a store security guard can only detain a suspected thief if they have probable cause that a theft crime, such as shoplifting, was committed.

In addition, store security guards may physically remove people or ask them to leave the premises, but only from the private property (i.e., the retail store) for which they are employed to protect and prevent the occurrence of theft crimes. If a store security guard goes as far as to physically remove a suspect from a retail store, they must do so with the amount of force that corresponds to the situation at hand. Otherwise, they may be held liable for damages.

    7. Americans have been shoplifting and rioting since Billy the Kid

    8. @8:51 - Cameras can help, but in some jurisdictions the police won't prosecute the shoplifter.

@2:09 - Yes there's nothing new about shoplifting, but magnitude matters. "Shrinkage" of 1% of sales may be affordable, but 5% might put the store out of business.

    9. The magnitude of shoplifting has been decreasing not increasing. This is part of the right wing attack on blue cities, partisan propaganda, not any real concern about crime.

    1. Israel is supposed to conduct a war -- a war they didn't start -- without bombing live people. Now, Israel isn't even supposed to bomb dead people.

    5. Palestine didn't exist when the Jewish state was founded by the United Nations and others administering for the Palestinian Mandate (a part of the defunct Ottoman Empire). There has never been a modern Palestinian state or nation.

Surrounding Arab nations, together with Palestinians living in Israel, attacked Israel the day after it was founded.

  4. Somerby is walking miles in absolutely frigid weather.

I would very likely keel over doing that and I don’t have any health issues and I’m younger.

Bob played basketball in school, so he is likely gifted with an athleticism above the norm.

    1. There are taxis and ubers and lyfts for that. Many pharmacies deliver. The main problem is not cold (it was in the low to mid-20s) but ice and risk of falling. If there was no ice, then there was no big deal walking that far. You don't need "athleticism" or basketball to walk a few miles at age 70, nor to be "gifted." If Somerby had a knee or hip replacement, his doctors may be urging him to walk.

Cecelia, if you would keel over, I suggest getting your doctor to recommend some exercise regimen. Mobility is the #1 predictor of mortality. You need to take it seriously and stay active.

I am taking the time to explain this because unrealistic attitudes about aging and what old people can do may affect people's assessment of Biden's capabilities. He rides a bike at age 80.

  6. At a town hall, Trump was ask a question about social security and spent 3 minutes talking about EVs. This is the guy who doesn't know the word climate (he calls it "clime") and thinks windmills are killing whales. He seems to have whales on the mind lately.

This man is unfit to be president.
