He was also a musician. He worked with Joan Baez, wrote film scores, and played basoon. He also hosted a public radio program about classical music. A versatile guy.
Every person has their own health circumstances. Biden has manifestly NOT had more medical problems, especially compared to men his age. Trump hides his personal medical history and does not explain when he has medical emergencies, such as the one that resulted in his taking a cognitive competency test after being rushed to the hospital.
Age is not the best determinant of health. Look at FDR and JFK who both had serious medical problems while in office (FDR died of his). And they were relatively young men.
There are llots of young people with medical problems who die before retirement age. So what? All that matters is what the health is of the person running. Look what Jimmy Carter was doing at Biden’s age.
Thanks for your responses. For me, the key is that we're projecting the future. The next President's term won't end until January, 2029. I don't want to bet that men as old as Trump and Biden will still be fully functional five years from now.
David, this is why we also elect a vice president. No one, no matter what their age or health, can say with certainty that they will live to finish their term.
More seriously, that's why some here think you're a guy - they can't believe that a woman would make bawdy jokes. Obviously, they don't hang around women very often.
When you try to embarrass grown men by calling them “teenage girls”, as Cecelia did yesterday, it reveals a stereotyped thinking that dates from 1952. Girls mature faster than boys, and I know many teenage girls who are more mature than supposedly grown ass men. It would be more embarrassing to compare grown men to teenage boys, or just … men, since they are far more likely to commit violent crimes. Cecelia’s humor reminds me of some puerile skit on Saturday night live.
This isn't an example of "wokeness" but it is an example of someone using charges of sexism to defend against legitimate criticism of someone's job performance. Not every accusation of sexism is valid. And no, the left isn't the one always using sexism as an excuse. This example comes from the right wing, cynically using a real problem for personal gain:
"Donald Trump's lawyer, Alina Habba, has been the target of mockery due to her combative style and court procedure flubs since she began representing Trump in his New York defamation case this week. But, according to New York federal attorney Colleen Kerwick, people are "nitpicking" her performance simply because she's a woman.
"Female lawyers already have an incredibly hard task of avoiding appearing too soft or too strident and too aggressive or not aggressive enough, so I'd rather herald her meteoric growth as an attorney than nitpick at her opportunities for further growth as an attorney and counselor at law," Kerwick told Newsweek.
Kerwick added that Habba "was adequately handling run-of-the-mill cases such as uncontested divorce, foreclosure, and slip-and-fall accidents before working her way into Donald Trump's circles."

How can you tell real sexism from self-serving excuse? Look at the context and the details of the charges. A bank robber gets caught trying to steal from a bank. He happens to be black. Can he legitimately claim "You are just locking me up because I'm black." Of course not -- the charges against him are true and he was caught in the act. In this case, Alina Habba has been criticized by right and left and by the judge himself for being unable to follow routine court procedure, being unable to rephrase objections and do a competent cross-examination of a witness. And she has not followed court procedure in addressing the judge. However she is good at some things that Trump has asked her to do. For example, she was a good fixer (in the sense that Michael Cohen was):
"In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in New Jersey's Middlesex Superior Court, Alice Bianco said attorney Alina Habba acted unethically by portraying herself as a friend and "neutral" ally after she learned that Bianco had alleged her boss was harassing her at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. Habba began representing Trump publicly soon after the NDA was signed in August 2021, according to the suit.
Habba on Thursday denied the allegations against her in the lawsuit, which was first reported by Politico.
"I always conduct myself ethically and acted no differently in this circumstance," she said in a statement.
Bianco said in a statement through her lawyer: "I didn’t know my rights. I didn’t know Alina wasn’t supposed to discuss a case with me without my lawyer. I didn’t know New Jersey had banned non-disclosure agreements for victims of sexual harassment. All I knew was that the person claiming to be my friend and advisor threw me in the trash as soon as she pressured me into silence.”
Habba's case is a complex mix of professional competence and potential sexism, the hypothetical scenario is about a clear-cut criminal act where race was not a factor in the person's guilt.
The bank robber being caught cold in the act and Alina Habba's situation are not the same kind of problem. The bank robbery case is clear-cut with objective proof. Accusations of racism would be quickly dismissed. Habba's case is subjective and open to interpretation with complications absent in the crude analogy of the the bank robber.
Whether Habba can address the judge according to custom and whether she can properly phrase an objection is NOT subjective and not open to interpretations, especially when the judge must chastise her for her behavior and when she talks back to the judge.
You are right - some aspects of professional conduct in a courtroom (like addressing the judge and phrasing objections) are governed by clear, objective standards. I was just pointing out the inappropriateness of comparing her situation to a completely different and unrelated scenario (the bank robber) which did not consider subjective perceptions that need to be considered in allegations of sexism (gender roles etc).
Peter Schickele has died.
ReplyDeleteDo you know who he was? I doubt it.
DeleteHe's the musicologist who discovered JS Bach's forgotten son, PDQ Bach.
DeleteNone of that is true. He was a comedian who wrote and conducted musical jokes attributed to a fictional son of Bach.
DeleteHe was also a musician. He worked with Joan Baez, wrote film scores, and played basoon. He also hosted a public radio program about classical music. A versatile guy.

We old folks have more medical problems. That's why the two candidates are not optimal.

Somerby is in worse health than I am and we are both the same age. I guess that means Somerby shouldn't be wrtiting this blog and I should, huh?

DeleteTrump is not fully functional as we speak.
Delete“Fully functional” means capable of a firm, sustained erection.
DeleteHe should be able to write his name on documents that require his signature.

In the Bible, women never make bawdy jokes. Come to think of it, men don’t, either. Bawdy jokes are unbiblical.
DeleteWomen I know are not like Cecelia.
DeleteCecelia, please post a nude pic of yourself.
DeleteA nude selfie.
DeleteNo wonder the right has way more sex scandals, if this is what they consider humorous.
DeleteI am a Christian conservative, and I think this is humorous.
DeleteThis is a hoot considering they were on me last night over gender stereotyping.

There is more than one anonymous commenter in the world. You need to go away.
