NOW TOO MUCH FOR US: We Americans, badly in need of a guide!

MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 2026

A road back out of all this: "Back out of all this now too much for us?"

We've cited the line several times before. It's the opening line of a puzzling poem by Robert Frosta poem which starts like this:

Directive

Back out of all this now too much for us,
Back in a time made simple by loss
Of detail, burned, dissolved, and broken off
Like graveyard marble sculpture in the weather,
There is a house that is no more a house
Upon a farm that is no more a farm
And in a town that is no more a town...

Say what? Already, the poem may seem to be a bit hardand, as the poem continues, its difficulty seems to grow:

(continuing directly from above)
The road there, if you'll let a guide direct you
Who only has at heart your getting lost

May seem as if it should have been a quarry
Great monolithic knees the former town
Long since gave up pretense of keeping covered....

In that passage, the poem cites "the road there"some road which would lead you back to "a time made simple by loss of detail."  That road is a road you might find, and even proceed along, "if you'll let a guide direct you who only has at heart your getting lost."

At this point, matters get worse:

That roadthis route of escape"may seem as if it should have been a quarry!" Meanwhile, go ahead and try to decipher the reference those great monolithic knees!

Critics and scholars seem to agreethis is a difficult poem. We've cited it because of the contemporary relevance of that opening lineof that instant reference to "a time now too much for us."

We Americans, Red and Blue alike, currently seem to be caught in such a time. We're caught in a timein a cultural situationwhich plainly seems to be "now too much for us."

Actually, to our eye and to our ear, it's substantially worse than that. To our eye and to our ear, the current situation seems to be vastly too much for us.

Beyond that, the situation seems to be sliding downhill in rapid fashionas, for example, with the fatal shooting of Renee Good last week, or as can be seen in these recent headlines from Mediaite:

There's much, much more where those items came from. As a further marker of the times, we include this relatively innocuous report from the New York Times:

The Next Phase of Trump’s Renovations: A New ‘Upper West Wing’

It turns out there was another reason President Trump was memorably “taking a little walk” along the White House roof in August: “I was looking at doing office space.”

After tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build a lavish new ballroom, Mr. Trump is turning his sights to a more famous section of the White House. He wants to build a second level on top of the colonnade that connects the West Wing to the White House residence.

In an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday evening, Mr. Trump said that he was calling the project the “Upper West Wing.” He said that it was currently under design and that if he liked what he saw, he would move forward. He said that West Wing aides could have additional office space there, or that it could be “first ladies’ offices for future first ladies.”

Later, during a tour of the White House residence, he said he planned to tear up the brick walkways in Lafayette Park and replace them with granite.

[...]

During a nearly two-hour interview, Mr. Trump described not only his plans for a large ballroom that has more than doubled in size since it was first proposed, but also his ideas for more building projects. Those include the renovations of the West Wing and Lafayette Park, as well as Washington Dulles International Airport, and the construction of a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery and a national garden of American heroes on the Potomac River.

Beyond this, he's placing his name in various entities, including the Kennedy Center. With respect to his plans for Greenland, this is the headline which appeared in the Times:

Trump Threatens to Take Greenland ‘the Hard Way’

There's much, much more where those items came from! We see a dangerous pattern in this. That said, many, many peoplemany millions of peopledisagree with that assessment.

"Back out of all this now too much for us?" In our view, we Americans are now caught in a timein a cultural situationwhich exceeds "our poor power to add," though not so much to detract. We've divided into rival tribes, neither of which seems to be pointing the way out of the current chaos.

We stress this significant point:

In our view, it isn't just Red Americathe Red America of Trump and Vance and Noem oh mywho are way in over their heads, and way out over their skis, in the current situation. In our view, that's also true of our own Blue Americaand we're willing to say that even after watching the jaw-dropping agitprop of Fox & Friends Weekend and The Big Weekend Show over the past two days.

At this site, we regard Red America as being almost completely lost at this point in time. (Many millions of people disagree with that assessment.)

We regard Red America as being almost completely lostbut our own Blue America is struggling rather badly too. We see no sign that our own Blue America, as currently constituted, is likely to serve as a guide to a road "back out of all this [mess]."

In the aftermath of Renee Good's death, we're recommending Frost's puzzling imagery for a reason we've tried to explain before. In our view, those of us in Blue America badly need to take a step outside the hourly turmoil of the time.

We need to take a major step back! We need to seek a better way to understand this timeand to understand our own Blue America's role in the endless turmoil.

Hoping to serve as a bit of a guide, we'll be trying to take a step back all this week. At this site, we think we Americans, such as we are, are currently living in a very dangerous time:

Friend, do you think, as we do, that the madness is all around usand that this is a time of great danger? If so, how might we, as Blue Americans, help find a way back out of this mess?

Tomorrow: As heard on Fox & Friends Weekend

"Bizarrely"? Ever heard the "tongue-in-cheek" expression, mediaite idiots?

Jeez, Bob, what was that all about?

I know, everybody knows, that you and all of your BlueAnons conrades are sufferings from TDS. No need to type all that to confirm it.

Chances are, you're not going to recover, you poor thing. But good luck anyway.

      Padam
    5. Perfect Democrat solution. The first thing we do is we let all the fentanyl in and let all the addiction happen and then we rob taxpayers to treat them in between their overdoses and crimes which fails.

      Padam
    6. The border patrol stops smugglers. No one is saying that should change. But if there were less demand there would be less smuggling. Trump lied about the source of Fentanyl which comes in via Mexico not from Venezuela. Telling lies doesn't stop drug addiction.

Of course Trump and his lackeys (like Joe Rogan) take credit for Biden's work, since killing random fishermen off the coast of Venezuela does absolutely nothing.

Biden understood this not as a law enforcement issue but as a public health issue, and addressed it accordingly - that is why it is working.

  2. "We've cited it because of the contemporary relevance of that opening line—of that instant reference to "a time now too much for us."

In other words, Somerby has a thought. Then he remembers a poem with a line that contains that thought -- never mind that it is about something else. Then he quotes that and calls the rest of the poem, about something else, "difficult" because it doesn't fit his purposes. That isn't how literary criticism words, but never mind. He then builds his column around the line. It would be more straightforward to simply state his own thought -- that the left is not coping well with Trump's nonsense -- instead of obfuscating with a bunch of words about quarry and shoulders that Somerby himself says he does not understand.

    BalasPadam
  3. Somerby says we do not have a way out of the current situation. That is not true. We on the left have a plan. First, it is to try to hold Trump in check by filing lawsuits against his illegal acts. Second, it is to build political power in as many areas as possible to gain house and senate seats during the midterm, if not take control before then via the loss of Republican seats due to resignations on the right. Third, it is to use the checks and balances built into our Constitution to remedy the wrongs that the right has refused to deal with. When that happens, Trump may be impeached again, perhaps even removed from office. Laws can be enacted to protect the nation against Trump's many abuses. The left has both the means and the will to do this. It does not yet have the votes in Congress, but it will very soon. Even Trump knows this and has been telling his supporters that he must win the midterms or he will be impeached again.

I do not understand why Somerby does not recognize this and acknowledge it. I do understand why he will not urge his readers to vote Democratic in the midterms. He is not that opposed to Trump, despite calling him mentally ill. The last time Democrats tried to impeach Trump, Somerby argued against it, claiming it would overturn the will of the people.

Today, Somerby appears to be trying to convince prospective voters that all is lost, that there is nothing they can do to fix anything Trump is doing, and that the left is as bad as the right when it comes to letting Trump run loose. In the face of last weekend's large protests nationwide, that is far from true. There is another march planned for Jan 20. I suggest that we all join it, to show Republicans that we have had enough of Trump's destruction and want it to stop. That IS something we can all do, while waiting for the elections that can and should stop what is happening.

    9. It's clear that Somerby writes in an indirect manner. He rarely makes bold statements. He uses this style to inject an ominous tone about the direction of our politics. Much of what Trump has done such a attacking weak nations has been done by other presidents. His threats against Greenland do qualify as ominous. If he invades it he would destroy the NATO alliance and make the US a pariah state. As for impeachment, its not an effective means of removing a president. Both Clinton and Trump were impeached, but the Senate votes to remove them were not there and they still aren't. Clinton left office with high approval ratings.

  5. "In the aftermath of Renee Good's death, we're recommending Frost's puzzling imagery for a reason we've tried to explain before. In our view, those of us in Blue America badly need to take a step outside the hourly turmoil of the time."

A step back, in the context of marches all across the country. Is Somerby hinting that we blues should not be protesting atrocities like Good's death? How does it help anything to let ICE get away with murder? Danger, danger, cries Somerby. Of course there is danger from ICE. That is the point -- and we cannot "take a step back" to our own safety while letting our government shoot citizens in the face for doing nothing wrong. Somerby hints there is more danger if we go forward. If so, our way is to oppose it, not to shrink into our homes and hope the shadow will pass us by and target someone else instead. Our way is not to let Trump and his gestapo push us into an authoritarian rule in which even the White House cannot be protected from "remodeling". There is Somerby's metaphor -- not some lame Robert Frost poem nostalgic for a depleted quarry.

The danger of our times is the point. It should not be dangerous to observe and document ICE at work. Just as it should not be dangerous to protest Good's death and object to Trump's threatening of international allies, his grifting and looting of natural resources, his undoing of the work done by previous presidents, his theft of the aid allocated to the poorest among us. We have a great deal to protest. If it is "dangerous" to do so, that is one more item on our list of grievances as we continue to march.

Meanwhile, I am donating money to Democratic candidates, contributing to my local food bank and non-profit organizations that have taken up the slack to help others, and I am rewatching Ken Burns' documentary on The American Revolution, because it reminds me of the courage needs when we first established our nation's freedoms -- the ones Trump is now threatening. It helps stiffen my resolve, as Somerby tells us to run home and hide under our beds, because times are in turmoil. The way out is not that direction. It requires that we join our neighbors on the streets and protest, not cower and hide.

  9. "We regard Red America as being almost completely lost—but our own Blue America is struggling rather badly too. We see no sign that our own Blue America, as currently constituted, is likely to serve as a guide to a road "back out of all this [mess]."

With this paragraph, I think Somerby is calling for more leaders like Mamdani. Also, Newsom, who is proving that he can operate on a national level to protect the nation from Trump, as he has been doing in CA.

It is sad that Somerby feels he must abandon blue leaders like Tim Walz (who Somerby keeps trying to torpedo by repeating Gutfeld's stupid "Tampon" jokes). The vicious right wing attack on Minnesota as a state should cause all of us to have second thoughts about letting Trump off his leash. The unfairness of what MN has suffered with the assassination of Democratic leaders, the targeting of Somali immigrants, and now an influx of more and more ICE agents to harrass blond mothers of three who are citizens, should not be tolerated by any fair-minded person. That leaves me to wonder what is wrong with Somerby.

Somerby urges blues (who he calls himself one of, while obviously touting red views) to walk back turmoil, when it is not us inflicting such acts on ourselves, but Red American and Trump doing this to their political opponents, because Trump has told them to go ahead and act upon their worst impulses. Noem has always been a horrible person, but Trump gave her permission to shoot people instead of puppies. We blues didn't do that, so how do WE go about walking it back? Somerby is blaming the victim, just as red America does routinely. And that is how we know he isn't one of us. We can tell who is who in this struggle. Somerby cannot.

    1. You're not going to believe this, but most Americans do not think that agitators who run over law-enforcement officers with their SUVs should be permitted to menace the rest of us in a civil society.

      Padam
    2. Who, specifically, ran over any law-enforcement officers?

      Padam
    3. Think for a moment. If you have to tell lies to have the moral high ground you may be on the wrong track. No one ran an SUV over a law-enforcement officer because ICE is not law enforcement, and the SUV was aimed to avoid the agent, who called the dead woman a "fucking bitch" after shooting her 3 times in the face. So, you are right, I don't believe a word you say. Fortunately, most Americans are not anything like you.

  11. I think Gavin Newsom should be our guide over here in Blue America, where Somerby does not reside. If Somerby were really Blue, he wouldn't think such guides are in short supply. He would be supporting one or another of the younger guides trying to keep Trump honest (an impossible task, but someone's got to try). Hakeem Jeffries, Eric Swalwell, AOC, Jasmine Crockett. We have lots of guides.

It infuriates me that the right was able to plan and execute a plan to take out Tim Walz, who wasn't even planning to run for president in 2028. They've been targeting him ever since he joined the ticket with Harris. They aren't bothering to attack Harris, because sexism, but targeting a guy who had the misfortunate to have four Democrats killed by a Republican nutcase on his watch, by inventing a non-scandal involving Somalis and referring to Tampons (a non-issue that allows them to engage in juvenle name-calling) when he wasn't even running for anything but governor, is about as low and mean-spirited as it gets. If he runs, he will get my sympathy vote, but they pushed him out of politics for no good reason.

I hope Newsom does run and I look forward to his vigorous campaign, because he brings the fight with him and he will smear those assholes like no one has ever seen before. If the Republicans take out the good guys, that will leave all lot of angry voters with champions from the major leagues, like Newsom. They'll get what they have dished out, and that will be fun for those of us who are upset over this never ending stream of right wing atrocities.

For purposes of this section, "menstrual products" means pads, tampons, or other similar products used in connection with the menstrual cycle.’
