WEDNESDAY: As we "plunge to new depths of national madness"...

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2026

...our journalists refuse to perform: It's very, very hard keep pace with the madness of the present day.

The constant flooding of the zone is stunningly effective. We're thrilled to see this stark citation in Michelle Goldberg's new column:

The Resistance Libs Were Right

For the last decade there’s been a debate, among people who don’t like Donald Trump, about whether he’s a fascist.

[...]

It’s striking how much the arguments that Trump is not a fascist have suffered in just the first few days of this year, in which we’ve plunged to new depths of national madness.

We've plunged to "new depths of national madness," Goldberg writes. Her formulation is colloquial, but it's also stunningly accurate.

We'll add a further thought:

Plainly, the driver of this national madness sits in the Oval Office. And at this point, does anyone doubt that the sitting president's form of "madness" does, in fact, involve diagnosable medical infirmities?

The safer way to picture this "madness" is as a form of cognitive decline. Our journalists will sometimes dare, though very rarely, to directly suggest some sort of cognitive issue.

Almost no one will ever suggest the presence of a (serious) "personality disorder." That's the technical medical term for what is sometimes still referred to as a type of "mental illness."

Our own guess would be that the president may be suffering some sort of cognitive decline, layered on top of the circumstance his niece described in her 2020 book. With apologies, here's her assessment again:

MARY L. TRUMP, PH.D. (pages 12-13): I have no problem calling Donald a narcissist—he meets all nine criteria as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)—but the label only gets us so far.

[...]

A case could be made that he also meets the criteria for antisocial personality disorder, which in its most severe forms is generally considered sociopathy but can also refer to chronic criminality, arrogance, and disregard for the rights of others...

The fact is, Donald’s pathologies are so complex and his behaviors so often inexplicable that coming up with an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis would require a full battery of psychological and neuropsychological tests that he’ll never sit for.

With apologies, there it is again! But as our nation unmistakably "plunge[s] to new depths of national madness," and as the president's behavior seems to become more erratic and more manic, our journalists and our academics still refuse to go there.

They insist on averting their gaze from these medical possibilities! As we experience new depths of national madness, we'd say that this is one of the great abdications of duty in the history of that pair of Blue elites.

The madness is general over America, and we all know where it starts. Then too, there is the difference between the kinds of representations to which we the people are exposed in our dueling pair of America.

Red Americans hear the darnedest thingsbut is it possible that those representations are sometimes true? We refer, for example, to yesterday's exchange between the Fox News Channel's Dana Perino and Tricia McLaughlin, the Department of Homeland Security’s primary spokesperson.

The exchange was triggered by Joe Rogan's use of the G-bomb"Gestapo." As reported by Mediaite, Perino tossed this question at McLaughlin, and McLaughlin replied with a specific number:

PERINO (1/13/26): So I know you and I talk a lot about communications and PR, and how would the department respond to that concern that he raised?

MCLAUGHLIN: Well, this answer is very straightforward. If Tim Walz or Mayor Frey would let us in their jails, we wouldn’t have to be there at all.

Currently, there are 680 criminal illegal aliens, Dana. That includes murderers, that includes rapists, child pedophiles—people who, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, you would never want these people on your streets or as your neighbors.

That’s the people who we are targeting, and we are trying to get out of Minneapolis. Because we don’t have state and local law enforcement’s cooperation, we do have to have a physical presence on the ground there.

That's the sort of thing Fox viewers hear all the timebut how about it? Are there really 680 "criminal illegal aliens"whatever that phrase is supposed to meancurrently housed in Minnesota's prisons and jails?

If so, how many of those 680 "criminal illegal aliens" are murderers, rapists, child pedophiles and the like? Because McLaughlin made it sound like The Minnesota 680 are pretty much all cut from that cloth.

Such claims are made on Fox all the time. Blue America's journalists never report or fact-check these claims, which may sometimes even be accurate.

There seem to be two basic rules in play as we continue to "plunge to new depths of national madness:"

Our journalists won't discuss the president's medical state. And our journalists refuse to report what happens on the Fox News Channel.

"New depths of national madness?" Goldberg gets it right!

    Good. Democrat squealing is good.

Squeal harder, Democrats, so that we know things are going well.

And, as usual, thank you Mr. President for draining the swamp. Keep draining the swamp, please.

"“OK. And what location is your preference?” After some dithering, I settled on my home state of New York. That was the last question; the entire process took less than six minutes. The woman took my résumé and placed the form she’d been filling out on top. “They are prioritizing current law enforcement first. They’re going to adjudicate your résumé,” she told me. If my application passed muster, I’d receive an email about next steps, which could arrive in the next few hours but would likely take a few days. I left, thanked her for her time, and prepared to hear back never."

The agent took the opportunity to gush about ICE’s new state-of-the-art semi-automatic tasers and brand-new pepper-ball guns. “It’s mostly very liberal cities—San Francisco, Los Angeles—where groups will come and try to stop ICE officers from arresting somebody. They’re like, ‘We’re going to form a human wall against you,’ ” he said. “When they do that, you can just pop ‘em up. Let them disperse and cry about it.”

When Donald Trump took office, ICE numbered approximately 10,000. Despite this event’s lackluster attendance, their recruitment push is reportedly going well; the agency reported 12,000 new recruits in 2025, which means the agency has more new recruits than old hands. That’s the kind of growth that changes the culture of an agency.
Trolls, do go yawn about professionalism. So boring.

  5. CBS New has tweeted that Ross was treated for internal bleeding. He was released from the hospital that night so it could mean heavy bruising. This info came from two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition.

    1. Ignorant troll. Go play in the sewers where your ilk hang out. We all saw the video you refuse to comment on, nasty asstroll.

      Padam
    2. Anonymouse 4:48pm, oh, yeah, you know how I refuse to comment on things. You’re really getting loopy.

      Padam
    3. Right just read it. He was evaluated. They found nothing. There's no mention of a CAT scan or anything. There are no pictures of any bruises. Are you following me, Cecelia? Or should I lay it out in simpler terms? Yes, they sent him to the hospital to provide a fig leaf for their blatant lie.

      Padam
    4. Ilya, actually, you’re following me by reading a post I made. No one made you do that and I specifically said that the injuries could have been bruising. As to you declaring the information to be a ruse, we’ll run that up the flagpole as we do with all your declarations.

      Padam
    5. Good's vehicle did not hit Ross, when Ross shot Good her vehicle was barely moving so even if it did hit Ross it would not cause even minor internal bleeding.

We have all seen the video, you can not gaslight us, if there is any truth to this - which is doubtful - maybe Ross got minor internal bleeding (a bruise) by the recoil of his gun.

Ross calmly walked away from the scene, obviously uninjured, other than his pride (which he sure did fix), he was only briefly at the hospital, leaving the same day, which is routine for any officer-involved shooting.

More likely, Trump is trying to con the rubes, using corporate media, since CBS is now essentially a propaganda wing for the Republican party, it is owned by a Trumper and CBS News is run by another Trumper.

It is wild how blindly faithful Trumpers are to Republicans regardless of the evidence. If a Democrat were in office during a similar incident, Republicans would adopt a more critical stance. This inconsistency illustrates how political narratives are often influenced by the party in power rather than the actual events.

What a strange hill to die on.

      Here is AI's take:

      Changes in Public Sentiment
      Factor Details
Polls and Approval Ratings Recent data showing a 30+ point drop in ICE approval signals widespread dissatisfaction with its operations and practices, particularly among constituents who previously supported strong immigration enforcement.
Abolition Support A 20-point increase in support for abolishing ICE indicates a growing call for reform or a complete overhaul of immigration enforcement, reflecting changing perspectives in a more progressive demographic.
      Implications for Republican Strategy

Re-evaluation of Positioning: Given these shifts, Republicans may need to re-evaluate their hardline stances on immigration and law enforcement. Continued adherence to policies that are losing public favor might isolate them from key voter groups.

Responsive Messaging: The pressure to adapt messaging may push Republicans to focus on reform rather than strict enforcement, seeking to address the concerns raised by constituents regarding ICE's actions.

      The Impact of Events

Polarizing Incidents: The incident involving Jonathan Ross may highlight existing tensions between community members and law enforcement. Events that reinforce negative perceptions of ICE can mobilize public support for alternatives, complicating political narratives.

Response to Grassroots Movements: Increased calls for reform often stem from grassroots movements advocating for immigrant rights, reflecting changing cultural values that both parties may need to acknowledge to remain relevant.

      Conclusion

The declines in ICE's approval ratings and rising support for its abolition present crucial considerations for Republican partisans. Ignoring these trends could further alienate constituents, especially as immigrant rights become an increasingly prominent issue in American politics. Political strategy may need to evolve in response to a shifting landscape, balancing enforcement with justice and reform to meet the demands of voters.

    6. Everyone should be able to agree that if Ross had simply taken a step to his right, there would have been no chance of contact with the car.

Instead, in a supposedly life-threatening situation he chose to devote his energy to drawing and shooting.

Which raises the question: what if Renee Good HAD actually intended to run him over? From that close a distance, how would shooting her have prevented it?

The car would have done what it does in all the videos: lurch forward in the direction in which Good was steering it.

So if the car had been aimed at Ross, shooting her instead of getting out of the way would have ensured his own death.

He only survived because Good meant him no harm; she was just trying to get away from the armed goons coming after her.

      Padam
    7. I didn't follow your post. I saw it my news feed earlier. It was immediately obvious that it was a flimsy attempt at a coverup. The story mentioned nothing about any diagnostic tests and what they showed. There was no mention of bruising. I can show up at my friendly neighborhood ER now -- and I am perfectly fine -- still they will be obligated to "treat" me. That's how it works. Glad I could help.

      Padam
    8. Hector, so now the compelling evidence has changed from Ross intentionally ignoring Good’s tire placement during that crucial moment to Ross being remiss as to having failed to take a small step to his right. Got it.

      Padam
    9. Nothing happened to Ross. He steadied himself and shot Good in the face through the side window. He didn't have to step away or do anything. Somehow, though, I doubt that you "got it", Cecelia.

      Padam
    10. Ilya, the ER must exam you. They are not obligated to give out false information to your family, friends, or play-by-plays to coworkers. CBS got this news from Ross’s fellow govt employees. You not obligated to believe it, but it’s not my job to protect you or anyone else from reported info (reported by a news network) that you think is bunk. I’ll link anything I wish to link, tough guy.

      Padam
    11. The more people like Cecelia try to push these false narratives, the more resistant the general public becomes.

They are shooting themselves in the foot.

In the real world, investigations show that there has been a pattern of behavior among these federal officers of intentionally positioning themselves in front of vehicles in order to then justify use of force, which is against their own rules. Ross himself has a history of similar behavior.

The Republican branding apparently now involves this motto "defend the indefensible".

      Padam
    12. ER simply said that he was evaluated for internal bleeding. Not that he had internal bleeding. It's unlikely that they would've let him walk, if he had suffered internal bleeding.
See, I happened to know about things like that. After my first shoulder surgery, I developed a deep hematoma in my shoulder, so they had to open me up again.
      Ross has no injuries. Period.

      Padam
    13. "...the compelling evidence has changed..."

I'm unaware of the rule that caps the items of 'compelling evidence' in a crime to one.

      Padam
    14. Agree with 5:21.

Doubling down is no longer working for Republicans.

When centrists like HCR says it is fascism, and right wingers like Rogan say they are like the Gestapo, the jig is up.

Apparently a Republican Senator recently said it is probably better if Dems take back Congress.

      Padam
    15. I’m sure the upcoming investigation (LOL) by the DOJ will provide truth and clarity. Its of no consequence that Trump and his DOJ have already declared Good a criminal, a domestic terrorist, and a lunatic. That couldn’t possibly affect anything could it?

      Padam
    16. Hector, yesterday the evidence was all about tire position, today we hear that he should have movies faster.THAT capped it,

      Padam
    17. Bruising=superficial injury that can be photographed.
Internal bleeding= not visible at the skin surface.
You can have one, or both. You cannot have internal bleeding from being hit by a car without bruising. You can have internal bleeding after trauma from severe contracoup type organ displacement like splenic rupture or kidney trauma. Anyone who experiences such an injury is not briskly walking along a road after the event. The administration's narrative here is bullshit. Their goal is for their bullshit to be echoed by either fools and/or collaborators. That is where Cecelia comes in.

      Padam
    18. Cecilia,

both of these things can be true:

      1. Ross should have noticed Good's tires turning away from him, and

      2. Ross could have avoided the entire problem by stepping to the side.

These 2 things are both true and not contradictory of one another.

So as usual with you, I have to ask: what exactly is your point?

      Padam
    19. Hector, and Tommy should have seen the Orange Crush on the floor in the soda aisle before he slipped on it. With “truth” like that, we’d put all the lawyers out of business.

      Padam
    20. Renee Good was shot because she was insolent, not because she harmed Ross. Its all gaslighting all the time with your tribe, Cecelia.

      Padam
    21. Anonymouse 10:25pm, no, I think this ought to be investigated before you and the boys go hang Ross and any other doubter.

      Padam
    22. "Orange Crush"

Well, Ross was standing directly in front of Renee Good's car. His body cam video shows her in the center of the screen, energetically turning the steering wheel with the tire-turning clearly visible.

So it would be hard to believe he wasn't aware of it, and Tommy-slipping-on-a-soda-can seems a deliberately misleading analogy.

You wouldn't be deliberately misleading, would you?

      Padam
    23. Hector, it’s extremely easy to believe he wasnt aware it. It’s interesting to me that Ross is supposed to have complete clarity in all that confusion and noise, but every day things such as not having your car sideways in the road, not disobeying commands from officers, and not trying take off like a bat out of hell with a slew of people around you are all okey dokey.

      Padam
    27. Cecelia,
Relax. There's nothing to the Haitian immigrants eating our pets story, that can't be easily explained by the blatant bigotry of the Republican Party and their fascist voting base.
BTW, I can stop mentioning the blatant bigotry of the Right-wing any time I want. I hope you'll read my comments on TDH every day ,so you can witness it when I finally do so, maybe.

      Padam
    28. Please stop hurting Cecelia's precious snowflake feelings by continuously bringing up the fact that the Republican Party is a bunch of fascists who lied about Haitian immigrants eating our pets because their voting base cares about nothing but keeping minorities down.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

      Padam
    29. "it’s extremely easy to believe he wasnt aware it"

Only seconds before, Ross had done a complete 360 around the car, filming it with his phone. He then planted himself directly in front of the car as if to prevent Good from leaving.

Then 2 other ICE officers drove up and strided toward Good's car (the one that was directly in front of Ross) and started yelling and cursing her and one yanked on the car door.

So all that noise and confusion you reference was all centered around Good's car.

Now as the car started forward, it was putting Ross' life in danger, no? Self-defense? Yet he didn't notice whether the tires were pointed at him or not? In other words, he didn't notice whether he was going to get run over or not?

What was he noticing? Was he just in lu-lu land? Was he thinking how unfair it was Trump hadn't won the Nobel? You must have some theories.

      Padam
    4. No, Ilya, you’re concerned that it be your way or the highway to the point where you get angry at a link to a CBS News piece. As though anyone here is supposed to run info thru you before posting something that’ was on a national news network.

      Padam

      Padam
    8. Anonymouse 6:07pm, is that what Ilya did? He researched it? Asking because I believe he said that he read the news report and discerned the piece was bunk. 9. CBS? Trump said to Doukoupil that he wouldn’t have his anchor job if Harris had won. Hmmmm..

      Padam
    10. Anonymouse 6:20pm, in other words, you do have to pretend that linking to a story about Ross’ condition via CBS News is the same as linking to Newsmax.

      Padam
    12. Anonymouse 6:58pm, we know your math. Your “math” demands that Bob call the NYT red media.

      Padam

      Padam
    14. Anonymouse 7:16pm, what do you mean “no one”? That’s been said repeatedly thru the years. The anonymouse gauge for the NYT runs from maroon to red.

      Padam
    15. No one is demanding anything of you. If pointing out the obvious places demands on you that you find onerous, that is your problem. There is zero evidence that Ross was hit by the car at all, but you show up here parroting administration bullshit. Trump said she ran over him. Why not go with that? At least such an event could have produced internal bleeding. I'm not demanding that you modify your narrative. I find it amusing and illustrative. You are comical. Don't change.

      Padam
    16. Cecelia -- I didn't say that the report was inaccurate. The report did say that Ross had any injuries. Only that he was evaluated. How hard is it to process two sentences? Ross was not injured. The CBS -- the newly minted propaganda outlet -- didn't say that he did. End of story. See if you can grasp this simple factoid.

      Padam
    17. Anonymouse 7:24pm, oh.you do make demands depending upon sources, You demand that we hold CBS News and the New York Times as carrying water for Trump. That’s a “load” to carry. And we’re supposed to ignore— not post these news items based upon no current evidence that they’re of no value, but merely upon your demands.

      Padam
    18. Ilya, I don’t if Ross actually has injuries or not. What I do know is that CBS News said that two Trump team members claim that the hospital personnel told them that Ross had internal bleeding. They could all be lying but it’s a new story from a prominent media entity and that is worth linking whether you think so or not.

      Padam
    19. They did not say that he had internal bleeding. The used weasel words: he was treated for or evaluated for. Ross has nothing.

      Padam
    20. What a tool you are, Cecelia.

      Padam
    21. Don't feed asshole trolls. Simply tell them to fuck off. No talking reasonable to unhinged jagoffs. Look at me!

      Padam
    22. Ilya, would it be crossing your line as to what media we are allowed to link here if you posted something that reported the actual “weasel words”?

      Padam
    23. Anonymouse 9;29pm, .talking or not talking to me won’t help you.

      Padam
    24. You’re the one who needs the help, Cecelia.

      Padam
    25. Anonymouse 10:20pm, you’ll have to live with that.

      Padam
    26. 10:30,
      Be careful.
That's what they said about Charlie Kirk's racist propaganda.

      Padam
    27. “CBS News said that two Trump team members….” OK you can stop there. This is ludicrous. If an assessment for internal bleeding takes place in the ER of a hospital via CT angiography or a bleeding scan and is positive the patient is admitted to the hospital and either 1) monitored for spontaneous cessation of bleeding with serial imaging studies, 2) the bleeding treated via interventional radiology (embolization), or 3) he goes to the OR for exploration. Under no circumstances does a patient assessed to have internal bleeding get released home from the ER. So, yeah, it is layers upon layers of bullshit coming from the Trump team, to be passed along by tools like Cecelia, as if CBS reporting their bullshit gives it some shred of legitimacy.

    Hot tip: could be both.

    Mind blown.

Trump is little different than he has been his whole life, perhaps with somewhat less of a filter these days, emboldened by the power of his position.

Trump's whole life he has been corrupt and a criminal.

Somerby ignores all that and instead wants to noodle around the exact proper way to diagnose Trump. Somerby is a poor thinker but he tries to be clever, this noodling is a way to muddy the waters.

    1. Trump is certainly a narcissist, possibly some form of sociopath. That does not equate to “mental illness”, it does not justify pity, it does not take him off the hook for his actions, nor does it disprove the clear authoritarian plan he is pursuing.

      3. Therefore they are hypocrites.

Stated more generally, organizations may change, may even engage in thuggery or murder, but Dems may not change their opinion of those organizations. Or else face Cecilia's wrath.

      Padam
    17. Anonymouse 7:29pm, you were certainly buying into the FBI when McCabe and company were going after Trump.

      Padam
    18. Nice try regarding McCabe. You played your hand here. You have zero credibility in suggesting what my view is of him nor Comey at that time. But let's hypothetically posit that at a time when a politician was publicly soliciting help from Russia in his campaign, that Russia was found to be assisting his campaign. Purely hypothetical of course. Do you think the FBI would be appropriately accused of "going after" that politician for investigating his conduct? McCabe, who may have lied to congress under oath was doing so about a leak that ironically favored Trump. And was of course never charged with anything by the litigious clown and his minions.

      Padam
    19. Anonymouse 8:20pm, Russia assisted Trump in order to hurt Clinton. She was who they thought would win. Of course I think the FBI was going after Trump and I know that they put FALSE info on a FISA warrant in order to wiretap him. That means that they listened in on several tiers of people. They listened into Trump, anyone Trump called, anyone those people called. That’s quite a lot of wiretapping and hours, days, weeks… Yeah, they went after Trump.

      Padam
    20. Ilya, no, you’re dealing with millions who have a different opinion. I get that you find that the same as being crazy.
      1. Millions of them are QANON. That's crazy, right?
      2. Less obviously -- and David is one of them; not sure if you are -- they have become convinced that undocumented residents, many of whom have lived here for years and decades, represent an immediate existential threat to the people in this country. So much so that nothing but the most brutal and inhumane tactics will do.

Not to mention what Quaker mentions above: Trump is an obvious -- really obvious -- conman, who has done nothing else in his life. To imagine that the aforementioned conman loves this country and has your best interests at heart is nothing short of derangement -- let's call it TDS.
      That's the mental illness.

      Padam

      Padam
    26. “Illegals” have undergone more, risked more to get here, and worked far harder than millions of American citizens. They do it for the belief in the American ideal: give us your tired, your poor, etc. you know, that stuff you and your tribe regularly mock, Cecelia. They are not a threat merely by being here “illegally.”

      Padam

    30. 8:47. Sorry, dear, you once again have your facts wrong. The FISA warrants you complain about were aimed at Carter Page and not Trump. With that warrant the Feds could listen in on Carter, the people Carter spoke with, and the people that THOSE people spoke with. Those tiers of people are called “hops”.That would have included anyone from Trump, to Steve Bannon, to Jeff Sessions, etc.And any other people who spoke by phone with Page. That’s why they obtained a FISA warrant.by hook or by crook.

  10. On the same day as her interview with Dana Perino, Tricia McLaughlin was quoted in a news release from DHS:

“Governor Walz and Mayor Frey REFUSE to cooperate with ICE law enforcement and have released nearly 470 criminal illegal aliens back onto the streets of Minneapolis. We are calling on Walz and Frey to stop this dangerous policy and commit to honoring the ICE arrest detainers of the more than 1,360 criminal illegal aliens in Minnesota’s custody,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “It is common sense. Criminal illegal aliens should not be released back onto our streets to terrorize more innocent Americans.”

I can't tell you why there's a difference in the number of "criminal illegal aliens" McLaughlin cited in the two statements.

Nevertheless, is it true that Walz and Frey refuse to cooperate with DHS? Do they really not allow DHS into Minnesota jails?

Short answer, no. It isn't true.

What McLaughlin is referring to is a disagreement over whether Minnesota jails and prisons should honor DHS detainer requests. A detainer request is exactly what it sounds like: a request for a jail or prison to hold a person, even if that person has made bail, been paroled, or completed their sentence. A detainer is not a legal order. It isn't a warrant. It does not require a judge's approval. It is a request.

Minnesota state law and court decisions have held that jailers do not have the authority to hold a person only on the strength of a detainer request. What McLaughlin is asking is for Walz and Frey to violate state law so ICE take a day or two to take custody of a person who can't legally be held for any other reason.

Our Host's instincts are correct in questioning what, exactly, McLaughlin means by "criminal illegal alien." While she is quick to list the offenses of a few of the offenders, she's suspiciously quiet on the details. One needn't look far to find examples of DHS officials referring to a wide swath of people with this term. Some are people with legal status who have been charged with a criminal offense. Others are people who are in the country illegally but who have no other criminal record.

McLaughlin also pointedly references people who have been released from jail She doesn't give us any idea why they were released. Regardless of the reason, an ICE detainer isn't sufficient to continue holding someone according to both state law and the courts.
