WITNESSED: The New York Times takes a new approach!

TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2026

Reports what they're saying on Fox: To the naked eye of an unskilled observer watching via videotape, the latest fatal shootingthe fatal shooting of Alex Prettilooks like nothing so much as an outtake from a Martin Scorsese crime film.

We're thinking of a film like Goodfellas, or of a scene from Casino

In the scenes we have in mind, Joe Pesci and Robert de Niro are whaling away at a helpless victim who is now down on the ground.  In the case of the fatal shooting of Pretti, something like half a dozen additional agents are whaling away at the victim.

The invention of the cell phone has allowed us the people to witness such public events. This morning, the New York Times has gone all in with respect to its reporting of this widely witnessed event.

The Times is treating this as the major event it surely isand the paper isn't being kind to the current administration. In print editions, the headline in the upper-right hand corner of the front page offers this punishing overview:

Trump, Under Pressure, Retreats From Smears In Minneapolis Killing

That isn't a friendly headline. Three different reports about this matter appear today on that same front page. Online, these are the headlines which sit atop those three front-page reports:

A Crisis of Confidence for ICE and Border Patrol as Clashes Escalate

Crackdown Chief to Leave Minneapolis as White House Distances Trump From Uproar

Alex Pretti’s Friends and Family Denounce ‘Sickening Lies’ About His Life

The headlines don't just speak of "smears," they also speak of "sickening lies." Inside the paper, seven (7) additional reports concern this fatal shooting and what has followed. On pages A10 through A13, here are the headlines which sit atop four of those reports:

How the Trump Administration Rushed to Judgment in Minneapolis Shooting

Border Patrol Official Gregory Bovino Is Set to Leave Minnesota

They ‘Had Done Everything Right.’ ICE Detained Them Anyway.

Parts of Minneapolis Carry On, but Talk of Killings Is Everywhere

This isn't friendly coverage. Scanning those headlines, a reader might easily formulate this general picture of what happened in the wake of this latest "killing:"

The Trump administration rushed to judgment, issuing a set of smears ad "sickening lies"

Our own assessment would be this:

Whatever else may turn out to be true, that overview won't be far from the truth.

Indeed, as a simple matter of historical witness, news orgs should carefully assemble a catalogue of the inexcusable, crazy claims issued by Noem and Bovino and Miller and others in the immediate, split-second aftermath of this latest shooting. A careful record of this ludicrous conduct by major officials should be assembled and saved.

In various ways, the New York Times has already gone all in with respect to its coverage of this fatal event. That said:

Late yesterday, we stumbled upon a news report which represents a whole new approach from this hugely important newspaper.

In all honesty, this new type of news report may come and go with zero follow-up. It may prove to be a harbinger of exactly nothing. The world may little know, nor long remember, the fact that it ever appeared.

For the record, it's hard to find this news report within the endless catacombs of this sprawling newspaper. Yesterday, we stumbled upon it only while googling some related topic.

This news report is hard to find. That said, remarkably, the news report starts like this:

Most Fox News Reporting on Minneapolis Shooting Supports Official Version

On Sunday morning, reporters on many TV networks were poring over multiple videos of the shooting over the weekend of a protester in Minneapolis by immigration agents, trying to understand what happened from slow-mo footage and freeze-frame images.

But on Fox News, the nation’s top-rated cable news network, there was little of that kind of analysis. Instead, most of its hosts, reporters and guests appeared laser focused since the shooting late Saturday morning on supporting the Trump administration’s official narrative: that Alex Pretti, a 37-year old intensive care nurse, brought the violence upon himself.

“Only one person could have prevented this from happening and it’s Alex Pretti,” said Charlie Hurt, co-host of “Fox & Friends Weekend” on Sunday morning. “He should have not been there.”

And so on from there, at relatively modest length. To his great credit, the New York Times' Ken Bensinger wrote this reportand some editor let him do it and put his report in print.

That quoted statement by Charlie Hurt? It's part of what we were referring to in our own (extremely rare) Sunday morning report. In that report, we mentioned the striking coverage we had seen on Fox & Friends Weekend that very morning.

As always, there we sat, bearing witness, during Sunday morning's 6 o'clock hour. Later that morning, here's part of what we wrote:

There are many problems to be examined in the wake of the latest fatal shooting. For one example, you need to see the way the fatal shooting was described by all three co-hosts on this morning's Fox & Friends Weekend.

It was Charlie and Rachel and Griff oh my! The agitprop was general over the broadcast. The thumbs on the scale were endless.

That's the way their presentation had looked to us. Yesterday, in a buried report for the New York Times, Bensinger reported some of what the three co-hosts had said.

We've complained and complained and complained ad complained about the failure of the New York Times to present this type of reporting. The American discourse could end up being massively better if this hugely important American newspaper continues along this path.

We live in two Americas nowRed as well as Blue. Just a guess:

Most of us in Blue America have little idea what's being said, and what's being heard, over in Red America. Citizens of Red America are similarly under-informed.

As he continued, Bensinger reported some of what has been said on Fox about this latest fatal shootingand by far, Fox is the most heavily watched of our three major "cable news" channels.

In our view, some of what is said on Fox is clownish / inane / inexcusable. On the other hand, some of what is said over there may perhaps be more accurate than what we hear over here.

In our view, a great deal of what occurs on Foxand especially on its most-watched showsresembles a clownish parody of news reporting and analysis. That said, some of what occurs on Fox is very much worth consideringand where major claims on Fox are wrong, they should be publicly debunked.

(Do you know how to assess this report? We have no idea.)

Readers of the New York Times deserve to know what's being said in the other America. As Lincoln suggested, a major modern nation can't survive half Blue and half Red.

The Times should bear witness to what happens on Fox! More on this topic tomorrow.

Tomorrow: Here's what the three co-hosts said

  1. "Do you know how to assess this report?" -- the link doesn't work, Bob.

Anyway. Our Greatest President Evah appears to be compromising in MN; won't be fighting the insurrection there, it looks like. It's a UGE, UGE disappointment.

And it has to be a UGE disappointment for you too, Bob, because your super-hero Abraham Lincoln would have, without a doubt, sent an army there, to march to the Canadian border, leaving nothing but scorched earth behind.

    Oh well...

    5. Piss poor call to arms loser. Powell and all the President's Generals lost the wars on terror to the terrorists. The pussy Trump handed over 5,000 terrorists to the Taliban and negotiated with Pompeo the surrender to the Taliban and set the terms to evacuate that Biden had to follow or the victorious Taliban said they would start shooting again. America is a big loser spending trillions along with life and limb and gaining nothing but showing how weak our military force is. Haha.

Normie America has weighed in on mass deportations.

Per CNN between 55% to 64% want ALL illegals deported. No exceptions.

    4. Easy. You take illegal aliens and you deport them. Those who attack you, you shoot. All there is to it.

    8. "Obey or the deep state shoots you ten times in your back?"

Yes, retard, if you want to live, obey the cop on the street. And then sue.

Yes, this is the American way. If you don't like it, go back to Somalia.

      Padam
    9. Cool, 11:41. Slight problem: these “cops” (ICE/CBP) have “absolute immunity”, according to the administration. That means they cannot be sued.

      Padam
    10. The immunity is exactly why you obey, lady.

And when you sue, you don't sue cops, you sue the city.

Anyway, call a lawyer, they'll tell you what to do.

      Padam
    11. "This response will enrage you because you're deranged."

How to say you're a foreign troll without saying it.

This moron hasn't a clue about America, or its laws or how it operates. It can only watch from afar and make wrongheaded assumptions. It should be noted, this ignorance can be corrected, if one is open to being educated; crack a book sometime.

      Padam
    15. “you don't sue cops, you sue the city. “

The point being: if you keep messing with the cops and get shot, that's the end of you. Capeesh?

      Padam
    20. Yes. It's good that you understand. Stay safe, lady, obey the cops.

      Padam
    21. Ok, 12:35. If they order me to shoot you in the back, I guess I have no choice but to comply.

      Padam
    22. lawyer here. He's right, stay safe, do what they say, and if your rights are violated hire a lawyer and sue them.

      Padam
    23. You’re a lawyer, 1:19, yet you don’t know what “absolute immunity” means.

      Padam
    24. Troll lawyer here, da da da da da.

      Padam
    25. It was already explained to you, retard, that immunity has nothing to do with it. Cops have immunity, the entities they work for usually don't.

Are you only retarded or are you completely brain-dead?

      Padam
    26. Deporting undocumented immigrants is not "the law", it is in fact not mandatory, it is merely an option, an option that Republicans historically have not chosen, preferring instead to offer amnesty and paths to citizenship.

Trolls at best only know the local laws of their country of origin, they are laughably ignorant of US laws.

      Padam
    27. Deportation ("removal") of undocumented migrants is the law, Democrat. Federal law.

      Padam
    28. After being frustrated with how their racism against Black people was losing traction with voters, Republicans decided to start focusing on immigrants, particularly with W Bush, as a means to galvanize support from their base

Republicans made it such a central issue for them, that Obama then felt compelled to deport a record number of immigrants. This speaks a good bit towards Obama's misguided inclination towards acquiescence and centrism.

Obama, however, chose to focus on immigrants with a violent criminal record (being undocumented is merely a civil violation), and his deportations were executed carefully and without brutality. This was was framed as a compromise that balanced enforcement with humane treatment.

Trump deported less immigrants in his first term, because Trump does not care about law and order, and he does not care about undocumented immigrants one way or the other; he only cares about the immigration issue as much as it can help his electoral chances or his power grab efforts. Trump's approach was more about using immigration rhetoric to fuel his base.

As it turns out, in 2024 immigration was not a top priority for voters, and it was an even lower priority than it usually is.

Trump is now underwater on all issues, including immigration.

As Republicans double down on the immigration issue with cruelty and brutality, they are in reality hurting their own party. It is pretty wild to observe.

Biden inherited the Trump and Covid generated spike in immigration, but instead of mass deportations, he used other methods.

Biden's administration reversed many of Trump's immigration policies, focusing on more humane approaches. Initiatives included reinstating asylum processes, increasing refugee admissions, and ending the "Remain in Mexico" policy.

By the end of 2023, data indicated a sharp decline in unauthorized crossings relative to the spike. This was attributed to a combination of policy changes, diplomatic efforts with Northern Triangle countries, and increased border enforcement focusing on asylum processes rather than blanket deportations.

The Biden administration's focus on immigration reform rather than solely on deportations suggests a more sustainable approach. By addressing root causes and creating pathways for legal immigration, Biden's policies aim to stabilize and regulate migration rather than merely responding through enforcement.

Biden's proactive policy changes and addressing the underlying factors influencing migration led to more effective outcomes than purely punitive measures.

This is all easy to research and learn about, Bob's perspective on immigration has always been misguided and based on ignorance, but also seems to be based on xenophobia, perhaps Bob has had personal experiences where he felt intimidated by people he perceived as immigrants.

  4. Democrat women are editing Pretti's face to look like a Republican chad because they can't feel empathy for ugly men. That leaves them frustrated since there are no Democrat men and the result is the deranged plague of liberal women.

      Padam
    4. What is this about “editing his face?”

      Padam
    5. They think he was ugly so they AI'd his picture cleaned up his facial hair and shortened his face to look less Democrat. The new fake one barely resembles him but was displayed in New York City and on MSDNC and all over social media.

Emblematic of their entire fake empathy and astroturfed "protests" when the real goal is destruction and perversion motivated by hate and rage. The person they caused to get himself killed is now sliced up in the editing room and put back together to be even more useful to their sick goals. They hate everyone but if you're not one of them they'll shoot you and laugh when you bleed out of your neck but if you are they'll use your corpse for propaganda for their cause. Hate and destruction.

      Padam
    6. What evidence is there that “they” “AI’d” his picture?

      Padam
    7. This is a defense against the actual editing of an arrest photo done by DHS. Every accusation is a confession.

      https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/22/white-house-ice-protest-arrest-altered-image

Meanwhile, the right has no respect for a dead man. They posted an image of a man in a pink dress and are pretending it was Pretti:

"Is the image of a man dressed in a pink dress wearing a gold crown a real photo of Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old man shot and killed by federal agents in Minnesota? No, that's not true: The person shown wearing the pink dress is an altered image of Ben Taylor, a comedian who appeared on the reality show Fishtank. The image does not show Pretti."

      https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/fact-check-photo-man-pink-075337131.html

This is ugly, even for the right, which seems to have no restraint and no sense of decency. Not unlike Trump himself.

      Padam
    8. Here is MSDNC showing the fake Pretti. Democrat women would report the real one to HR if he complimented them at work so had to turn him into a man they didn't hate and would be flattered by.

      Padam
    10. Apparently, 10:24 the original commenter, is attracted to Pretti and is trying to cope with the cognitive dissonance by pretending that the photos are doctored.

That is what decades of moral panic over perfectly natural and healthy inclinations does to such a sad lost soul of a person.

    11. Pretti is a bit of a doppelganger of the doctor in "The Pitt." Trumpers are so fucking weird.

It is not working, though. Trump keeps sinking in the polls. The former consensus was that Trump's floor was around 30%, but it's looking like it might be in the 20s.

      Padam
  6. Somerby refers to Pesci and DeNiro wailing away at someone. This is an English mistake, as described in "Common Errors in English Usage," by Paul Brians:

    "wail / whale
One informal meaning of “whale” is “to beat.” Huck Finn says of Pap that “He used to always whale me when he was sober.”

Although the vocalist in a band may wail a song, the drummer whales on the drums; and lead guitarists when they thrash their instruments wildly whale on them.

Although this usage dates back to the 18th century and used to be common in Britain and America, it is now confined mostly to the US, and even there people often mistakenly use “wail” for this meaning."

It isn't surprising when Americans make grammar mistakes, but Somerby was a school teacher and should know better. Perhaps the numerous Eastern European troll farm trolls here will learn from his mistake.

    BalasPadam
    Balasan
    1. Somerby spends a lot of time criticizing journalists. One aspect of their job is correct use of language. Also, it is a sign of trolling when someone cannot get basic usage correct, since both bots and trolls are unable to grasp subtleties of usage.

Somerby had aspirations to be a journalist at one time. Today, this vanity blog is his attempt to mimic what writers do. My point is that he doesn't care enough to get such things right, which is odd for a former teacher and double-odd for an aspiring journalist.

You cannot come here year after year and rail at journalists for trivial mistakes while making them yourself, as Somerby does. He never proofreads and never corrects errors, but he expects journalists (especially female and black ones) to be perfect.

And if no one else benefits from pointing this out, perhaps the Russia-funded trolls on those troll farms will improve their simulation of American speech.

      Try and keep up, 11:08.

      Padam
    5. 11:12 shows us why Democrats believe the things they believe. He can't tell the image is doctored or find the real one, and can't be expected to analyze information accurately. that's why he's a Democrat.

      Padam
    6. Pretti is standing in front of a flag. It may be a photo taken for some official purpose, such as to post on the VA hospital staff webpage. That doesn't mean it was doctored by the left to make him more attractive. Accusations like this are intended to hurt people, Democrats, as part of partisan warfare and to protect ICE. This shouldn't be happening any more than those shootings.

Why does Somerby provide a forum to miscreants from the right (or worse, from Russia-funded troll farms)? Most other blogs are moderated. Kevin Drum used to moderate his blog. Why not Somerby? These cruel remarks increase the divide between right and left and create hate. Somerby talks a big game about being against such division, but he is fostering it by allowing free rein to miscreant trolls and right wing operatives here.

This is a perhaps unconscious effort by Somerby to distance himself from the reality of what is happening. The shock most of us feel when seeing that video is partly because it is real, not some movie footage. Here Somerby shows denial, a psychological defense against seeing what is actually happening to a real human being in an actual event. But letting oneself experience that event in its full meaning is part of understanding what is happening to other real people, those detained and harrassed by ICE in MN and elsewhere. As long as this is some cosplay exercise, a game, an abstract or theoretical mind exercise, there is no sense that real people are experiencing horrible things every day, at the hands of ICE.

  9. Somerby lauds the NY Times article discussing coverage of the ICE shooting, but no Fox viewers will be reading the NY Times. The effectiveness of the Fox propaganda effort rests on the fact that right wingers live in a media bubble where they won't see these analyses, even if they were more frequent and more prominent in the paper. There are plenty of opportunities for Fox viewers to gain a more balance view of political and current events -- they do not make use of them. That is not the fault of reporters or the NY Times, but of the right. Yet Somerby comes here day after day to blame blue America and the blue media for the actions of those right wing viewers with their heads in the sand, blindly following whatever Deal Leader tells them to believe. We didn't make them that way. That is their choice.

  10. Does anyone know where I can see videos that include whatever happened before Pritti was tussling with ICE agents? I have not seen any video's of what led up to the shooting. I read that Pritti interfered with ICE when they were grappling with two women. OTOH I read that ICE simple grabbed Pritti while he was demonstrating but was otherwise not involved.

Regardless of what led up to it, The ICE agents are responsible for shooting him. But, earlier video would show whether or not Pritti was blameless.

    13. Pretti had a previous encounter with jumping in on an ICE arrest and ended up with a rib fracture. Then he comes back armed? It’s like Hector’s argument that Ross should have jumped right or left depending upon which direction Good was coming at him.

      Padam
    14. No evidence he wasn't armed then too. An ICU nurse comes and goes at odd hours from work, perhaps in a bad neighborhood. He may have had the gun for self-defense, but whatever his reason, he is entitled to carry it and was licensed to do so before ICE arrived in MN. He obtained his permit three years ago.

As has been pointed out numerous times in numerous places, Ross was not endangered by Good's car and didn't have to jump away in any direction. Good steered away from him. There is video of that too.

Go away -- we don't need more lies here today.

    15. Anonymouse 4:06pm, I didn’t say Pretti was armed during his first encounter with ICE. I said he later came out in the midst of a protest with a gun after already being on their radar. As soon as they saw that gun they pulled up his picture and history.

Today, on media matters, there is this story:

After 36 hours justifying the killing of Alex Pretti, Fox News suddenly changes its narrative
    Written by Matt Gertz

    Published 01/26/26 12:40 PM EST

"On Sunday evening, Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin published a lengthy report detailing internal dissent among his federal immigration enforcement sources regarding the narrative pushed by Department of Homeland Security leaders after Border Patrol officers gunned down Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who had been videotaping their activities, in Minneapolis on Saturday morning.

Amid the several hundred words describing an internal schism over how DHS is messaging masked agents of the state opening fire on a man who had already been restrained, Melugin slipped in the following statement: “There is no indication Pretti was there to murder law enforcement, as videos appear to show he never drew his holstered firearm.”

Melugin’s stark acknowledgement was whiplash-inducing for anyone who had been following Fox’s on-air coverage of Pretti’s killing up to that point, and it marked the start of a dramatic shift in the network’s treatment of the case.

Fox spent Saturday and much of Sunday blaming the victim and local Democrats for his death while excusing and even valorizing his executioners. In doing so the network was following in the footsteps of the high-ranking administration officials who baselessly argued that Pretti was a “would-be assassin” engaged in “domestic terrorism.” Melugin himself was the vehicle DHS used to launder its excuse that Pretti “was armed.”

And notably, some Fox contributors repeatedly justified Pretti’s killing by going beyond the official comment to allege that he had drawn the gun he was reportedly legally carrying and that he even pointed it at the Border Patrol officers — the very claim Melugin said Sunday night had been disproved by videos.

The fallacy of the DHS smear of Pretti had long been clear to anyone who had reviewed videos of the shooting, triggering widespread outrage over his killing. But Melugin’s admission — and his reporting on a schism within immigration enforcement over the case — apparently provided his colleagues the permission structure they needed to abandon their narrative. "

If Somerby is going to claim that we on the left need to closely follow the machinations of Fox, then he needs to keep up to date himself. I don't see that happening here, aside from random Gutfeld jokes. I see no overview, no analysis from Somerby about Fox coverage, as occurs at these other sources. Even the podcasts like Meidas Touch and David Pakman and Pod Save America do a better job of summarizing right wing positions than Somerby does. His main goal does not seem to be to inform anyone of anything, but to chide the left and portray Democrats negatively, in service of Democratic vote suppression in the upcoming midterms. This bogus claim today is just another brick in that wall that Somerby has been constructing since 2015 when he joined team Trump.

  13. ICE is doing stuff like this, but we're supposed to worry about how many Blue Americans watch Fox News?

"Dozens of protesters in Phoenix, Arizona were hit in a drive-by mace attack Monday night by an apparent Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, Phoenix New Times editor Zach Buchanan reported.

“I've been sent video from the end of the ICE raid at the Zipps on 32nd and Shea,” Buchanan wrote in a social media post on X, alongside video of the incident.

“It shows protesters – on the sidewalk, impeding no one – getting drive-by maced by an ICE agent from a truck as it rolls away down the road. Hard to see how such tactics are justifiable.”

Stephen Miller, widely regarded as the senior asshole in the Trump administration, masterminded the sociopath substitution, White House sources said.

Minutes after the decision was made to swap psychos, Miller assembled an array of qualified miscreants in the White House Situation Room, including Kristi Noem, Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi, Karoline Leavitt, and Marco Rubio.

“Anyone who thinks this administration is going to run out of assholes any time soon better think again,” Miller told reporters. “We have a very deep bench.”

      Padam
    5. It seems to be taken for granted that Trump's father was abusive, but there is no evidence he abused Trump (who was his heir apparent and his favorite). Mary Trump's portrait of Trump's father concerns his abuse of her own father, who wanted to become an airline pilot instead of takeover the family business. Trump's father may have been an unpleasant person but he isn't here to defend himself and there aren't facts on the ground about him other than from some biased sources.

  15. The Trump administration is going to have to rewrite the story of the Boston Massacre. Colonists who were taunting and pelting British soldiers with rocks were fired upon by the soldiers. 8 colonists were killed. This incident was a key rallying cry for the move for independence.

The Trump administration is going to have to teach schoolchildren that the colonists were domestic terrorists who failed to obey lawful orders from government law enforcement officers.

  17. There has been dissenting -- that is to say non-lying -- commentary even on FOX. It may appear that this is a point of inflection. Myself, I don't see how the murder of Pettri is much different from the murder of Good. Nonetheless, it seems to have triggered some degree of reflection, even from the sycophantic cheerleaders on the right.

However, this is but a minor speedbump for this administration, which is still hellbent on some form of ethnic cleansing domestically. The only chance that we have at slowing down this lawlessness is to show up en masse, just like the people in Minneapolis did. Accurate headlines in the media are not going to help us; maybe only insofar as mobilizing decent people to join the protests.

  18. Somerby seems to think that the NY Times is reporting on Fox because what Fox has said is a story worth reporting. Actually, the story about Fox is being reported by the Times because it reflects Trump's policy with regard to ICE and Minnesota. It is not news that Fox is the right wing's propaganda mill.

Here is his incorrect assessment of Fox News, which he has been advancing for years:

"In our view, some of what is said on Fox is clownish / inane / inexcusable. On the other hand, some of what is said over there may perhaps be more accurate than what we hear over here.

In our view, a great deal of what occurs on Fox—and especially on its most-watched shows—resembles a clownish parody of news reporting and analysis. That said, some of what occurs on Fox is very much worth considering—and where major claims on Fox are wrong, they should be publicly debunked."

When Somerby claims that Fox is more accurate and worth considering, that is because he has bought into a Fox position and shares the political view expressed. Liberals do not typically agree that Fox has better info but recognize the made-up and distorted coverage.

Examples of past facts Somerby found to be more accurate on Fox included coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting. He thought the witness testimony that Zimmerman was being beaten by Martin was compelling and wasn't sufficiently emphasized outside of Fox. In general, the "better facts" reported on Fox are the ones that conservatives used to support their positions, which Somerby himself shared. Somerby appears not to recognize that his approval of some facts on Fox, is actually approval of certain political opinions he shares with the right, not new or better info.

Somerby is correct that it is difficult to discuss topics without having the same facts at hand, but even with the same facts, there will be differences in emphasis and interpretation. Fox promotes right wing lies and that discredits whatever facts they might also include.

This recent shooting shows the extreme distortion of reality presented by Fox in support of ICE, walked back when the administration realized it could not put over its false narrative with video of the shooting so widely circulating even on the right. This should be a moment of truth for Somerby, but it isn't. He doesn't say what fact about Pretti's death is more accurate on Fox, to the point that we should all rush to watch it. He just calls us all under-informed in the face of a major scandal in fake news coverage perpetrated by the right wing.

    1. "So, once again to Michael and Susan, when I talk to these parents, it's always in deep confidential conversation. In this one, though, Michael was very clear to me. He said, "Don't let them forget Alex's story.

The world knows how he died. He died at the hands of ICE agents on the streets of Minneapolis. They want us to make sure we said how he lived. So to Michael and Susan, our deepest sympathies, but you have my commitment to continue to tell that story.

So now we've got two Minnesotans dead, we didn't have time to start telling [Renee Good's] story of a poet and a mother and a bright spirit, and now we're telling Alex's story.

So my question is, what's the plan, Donald Trump? What is the plan? What do we need to do to get these federal agents out of our state? If fear, violence and chaos is what you wanted from us, then you clearly underestimated the people of this state and nation.

We are tired, but we're resolved. We're peaceful, but we'll never forget. We're angry, but we won't give up hope. And above all else, we are clearly unified. If it was the intention of Donald Trump to make an example of Minnesota, then I'm damn proud of the example that the world's seeing.

We believe in law and order in this state. We believe in peace, and we believe that Donald Trump needs to pull these 3,000 untrained agents out of Minnesota before they kill another person, and we're up here telling another story of a Minnesotan just trying to live their life without the interference.

To Americans who are watching this right now, and I don't know, maybe you're watching it with curiosity, bewilderment, horror, scorn or sympathy. I've got a question for all of you: What side do you wanna be on?

The side of an all-powerful federal government that can kill, injure, menace and kidnap its citizens off the streets? On the side of a nurse at the VA hospital who died bearing witness to such a government? Or the side of a mother whose last words were, "I'm not mad at you"?"
