Starting tomorrow, The word "segregation" forever! Do women, on average, get paid 80 percent as much as men for doing the same work?
A paradox lurks inside the answer to your question. In truth, no one believes that familiar old claim—but within our self-impressed liberal tribe, everyone likes to say it!
We've lost a lot of regard for Candidate Harris as we watch her "misspeak" all over the campaign trail, even as serious issues of corporate looting go unaddressed. In fairness, Rachel Maddow remains the all-time champion of this rolling gong-show.
Anthropologists tell us that this is what our species was like all along. We're not sure if these experts are right—but last week, our reports on the subject went exactly like this:
Tuesday, May 28: PolitiFact explains the pay gap again! Grim future scholars respond.Women get 80 cents for the same work! Our tribe loves to say it!
Wednesday, May 29: PolitiFact cast in the Sisyphus role! The long-suffering Fact-Checker's Tale.
Thursday, May 30: We've been reciting this fiction for years! Saving Cable Star Maddow.
Friday, May 31: Brilliant young scrionly bes maintain tribal script! Harvard, Yale crash and burn.
Our enduring love for the word "segregation" seems to come from a similar place. We specifically refer to claims concerning "segregated schools."
Tomorrow, we'll start to look at modern claims from our tribe concerning "segregated schools." We'll review a list of fascinating basic facts, even as we note our tribe's complete disinterest in the sorts of things which actually happen inside low-income schools.
Do our beloved claims about "segregated schools" make sense? Or do these claims perhaps resemble our beloved tribal claims about that 77 or 80 cents?
Anthropologists call that a very good question! This fascinating exposition may extend through more than one week. Some say we may even get an early look at the syndrome known in the future as Professoriate Down!
"In truth, no one believes that familiar old claim—but within our self-impressed liberal tribe, everyone likes to say it!"ReplyDelete

The NY Times is discussing segregation again:ReplyDelete
I'm sure Somerby plans to discuss this article tomorrow, but he will have to have some answer to the graphs that clearly show the increase in test prep and the decrease in junior high advanced science and math programs. This article says that some black junior highs never tell their students about the existence of the special high schools.
Meanwhile, Somerby rails that there are insufficient white students to integrate schools when the problem is that there are an overwhelming number of black and hispanic kids who cannot get in to the specialized high schools, when they were able to do so in the 1970s. It isn't as though black kids were scarce in the city.
If this is a matter of competition for insufficient resources, why does Somerby side with the Asian kids against the black kids?
This article also notes that NYC has opened 11 additional specialized high schools since 2002 but that has not helped address the imbalance. It also notes that the Asian kids are poor too. So this boils down to a question of values. Do you let the Asian kids in, who have sacrificed to take prep classes and studied hard, even if they take all the seats, or do you reserve some seats for black and hispanic kids who do not have the same cultural advantages (families and schools who push them toward study and school-related sacrifice) but who do benefit and graduate when admitted?
The article asks whether the test prep is fair and De Blasio is proposing to remove the test and change the basis for admission to make it more accessible to all kids. Somerby will no doubt bring his NAEP scores to bear, but recall that the gap was larger in the 1970s (when far more black and hispanic kids attended specialized high schools) than it is now. So why should the % have decreased instead of increased at these schools?
He will not address the FACT that comparing NAEP means tells you nothing about the kids at the high end of the distribution, how many of them there are and whether they are applying to NYC specialized high schools and being turned away.
Under the guise of claiming concern that black kids are ill prepared for specialized schools and therefore will not gain a benefit, Somerby pushes for meritocracy.Delete
Ill prepared, like the hispanic girl interviewed in the article?Delete

Samantha Bee and John Oliver were both correspondents on The Daily Show with John Stewart, Bee a few years more than Oliver.
After that show ended, Oliver went to HBO where he is paid $5 million per year. His net worth is estimated at $10 million. Samantha Bee went to TBS where her pay is not stated but her net worth is estimated at $5 million.
Both has earned Emmies. Both have weekly shows that do political commentary. Both are talented and funny and have substantially equal career trajectories with similar outside employment. Bee is paid half what Oliver gets.
Bee was recently interviewed and said it felt awful to not even be interviewed for John Stewart's job, as Oliver was.
But Somerby believes that the 80% statistic is wrong. Women who work know first hand that he is full of shit.
Somerby would no doubt claim that Samantha Bee is just not as funny or talented as John Oliver. Everyone knows that women aren't funny.
10:22 AM reminds us that until the super rich are equal it's too soon to concern ourselves with the 99%. Justice for Samantha Bee! Just what we need, more devotionals from rank-in-file Democratic centrists -i.e. suckers- with this as the way to tackle the issue of inequality.Delete
No, this is simply a highly visible example that there is not equal pay for women, despite Somerby's protestations. There are other cases of actresses whose pay imbalances were worse than Bee's.Delete
All women deserve equal pay. Even those paid by Russia to troll liberal websites pretending to be a Bernie supporter and progressive firebrand.
Couldn't find anything to cut-and-paste on this topic?
At least Cmike openly cut and pastes, unlike other useless commenters like tone-deaf deadrat.Delete
6:17 PM is this site's spokesperson for trickle down feminism.Delete
I may have to rethink voting for Sanders if CMike is any indication of what his devoted followers are like. Of course, it’s also possible that followers like CMike will cause Sanders’ candidacy to implode long before the primary.Delete
This comment has been removed by the author.Delete
7:35 PM, you're here arguing what woman would benefit from a $15 an hour minimum wage law when a glass ceiling will be holding Samantha Bee back from an eight figure contract anyway and you're weighing whether to vote for Sanders- yeah, sure.Delete
What about the woman who makes $20/hr while her male colleague in the same job, with the same qualifications (or worse) and the same productivity makes $30/hr? Somerby thinks she doesn't exist but I know her and her name is everywoman.Delete
I am 7:35, and I am not any of the other anonymous commenters. You rather embarrassingly did not address my main point, which is that you are a thin-skinned Bernie supporter who lashes out at perceived criticism of Bernie by calling the critic anti-Semitic, or Hillbot, or some other equally childish insult. You are a poor representative of Sanders’ supporters. Or perhaps you are typical.Delete
8:22 you may not be 7:35 but you are the other anonymous commenters- or you claim to be speaking for them so own it. As to Sanders, I'm no representative of his, he has his own spokespeople, I am a supporter of his candidacy and most of his platform. You're not going to vote for Sanders regardless of how I comment- you're just being here being dishonest.Delete
I am not 8:22 or 7:35. I am some of the remaining anonymous comments. I do not believe you can or should lump all anonymous comments together and blame them for comments they didn't write.Delete
I'm not voting for Sanders and wouldn't if he were the messiah after what he did to Hillary in 2016. 8:22/7:35 may be more open-minded than me, or may have different criteria for choosing who to vote for. If you are going to assume no one will vote for Bernie, you can stop touting him here and we will all be much happier.
Vote for a better America, vote Bernie 2020.Delete
9:42 PM if you can't be bothered to use a pseudonym don't jump into a thread some other anonymous has started and expect your voice to be recognized because you think it leaves some sort of glow.
As to your restated commitment not to vote for Sanders "after what he did to Hillary in 2016" even if you were to come to realize Sanders is (in your words) "the messiah,"- we got it, you're such a spiteful sort, it's a wonder you still have a nose.
(BTW, I was going to give up commenting here but if my doing so will make you happier then justice requires I continue. As I always say, "Misery for the misandrous.")
Maybe just quit calling people anti-Semitic when they say something you think is critical of Sanders, or quit putting people down who say they supported Clinton, or people who dislike Somerby trashing Harris. You might push back too if Somerby were doing the same thing to Bernie as he is doing to Harris, days and days of trashing of her.
11:16 PM, I'm all for leaving gratuitous and, especially, knee-jerk accusations of racism, misogyny, treason, antisemitism and other bigotries out of these threads. As a show of good faith, how about all of you anonymi going first.Delete
"We've lost a lot of regard for Candidate Harris as we watch her "misspeak" all over the campaign trail, even as serious issues of corporate looting go unaddressed."ReplyDelete
So, if Harris were using the correct statistic, Somerby would still be critical because she doesn't talk 24/7 about corporate looting?
She spends some of her time talking about women's issues, so she is a bad candidate. Uh huh.
Both Sanders and Harris talk about the Republican tax bill when they talk about corporate looting. Both say it should be repealed. The main difference is that Harris supports the Democratic party and calls herself a progressive. Bernie calls himself a Socialist and doesn't support the Democratic party. Otherwise, their proposals are the same. Harris talks about women's issues more than Sanders does. Sanders still hasn't found a way to show support for women. He is the bro's candidate, which may be why he resonates with Somerby.
Queen Elizabeth gave Trump a first edition of Churchill's "The Second World War". Never let it be said that the British aren't subtle with their rebukes.ReplyDelete
So subtle, I missed it.Delete
Subsequent reports say it was an abridged edition.Delete
It is a rebuke because Churchill describes the efforts to hold off the Germans while entreating the US to enter the war, which they only did after Pearl Harbor was bombed. Then the US and GB worked closely together to win the war and negotiate peace.
The Queen no doubt intended to remind Trump of this important history of working together to defeat a common enemy. She is also making an eloquent silent protest against Trump as US leader because she is pointing out to the world that Trump cannot read, will not read, and no doubt has never read Churchill's book (for which he won a Nobel prize in literature in 1953). The abridged version is an affront to any reader -- no one who does seriously read ever picks an abridged version. The queen is perhaps saying, "would you even read this shorter version of our history together?" to Trump.
She could have given him something he values, such as steaks or a ride in her golden carriage. So this was a gift with a message.
Trump can't read. David Pakman presented evidence of that back in 2017. He is a low-literacy individual not a stable genius. The Queen was mocking Trump with her gift. He won't get it, that's the beauty part.Delete
"While Harris was discussing, of all things, the gender pay gap, the male animal rights protester, Aidan Cook, stormed the stage and grabbed the mic out of Harris’s hand. (Not a good look, bro.) Before security could reach the stage, Karine Jean-Pierre, MoveOn’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, bravely put herself between Harris and Cook.
“I’m asking for your attention for a much bigger idea than…” Cook said into the microphone before it was taken from him. Event staff along with Harris’s husband, Douglas Emhoff, eventually removed Cook from the stage."
Something is wrong when the rights of animals are considered more important than the rights of women, who are coequal human beings.
When Somerby attacks Harris for asserting the right to equal pay, he gives a wink and nod to guys like this one who thinks it is OK to steal the mic from Harris while she is speaking about women's issues.
Politico rightly asks why security was napping and let this guy get close enough to do this. Had he been violent as well as fanatical, Harris was protected only by a black woman who threw herself in front of the man assaulting the stage. Why did he get that far?
"...but within our self-impressed liberal tribe, everyone likes to say it!"ReplyDelete
Dembots say it, and zombies ♥ it.
From a recent TDH post:ReplyDelete
“the relevant statistics, in which women are underpaid perhaps 5 cents on the dollar (if that) for the same or equal work”
As this lawsuit shows, the relevant statistics don’t adequately describe individual cases:
"We've lost a lot of regard for Candidate Harris as we watch her "misspeak" all over the campaign trail, even as serious issues of corporate looting go unaddressed."ReplyDelete
I've been reading "Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution" by Ji-Li Jiang. It is a cautionary tale about what happens to individuals when a people's revolution gets out of hand and starts punishing everyday citizens for infractions of communist orthodoxy, such as wearing bourgeois clothing, owning pictures of people wearing fancy clothing, or children's stamp collections (because the stamps are foreign and it is a bourgeois pastime).
One of the chilling aspects of her book is the glee with which the have-nots ransack and destroy the property of families with bad class status, the blacks (as opposed to reds) who are ineligible to join the party or the red guard due to things their grandparents did (businesses they ran or property they owned).
Echoes of this appear in the language choices Somerby makes here, chastising Harris for being insufficiently behind the working classes and not speaking loudly enough against the rich, corporate looters. As if her background were not the equal of Bernie's in terms of class struggle and her work as Attorney General of California didn't include prosecuting corporate wrongdoing. But she is apparently not up to snuff, so it is the job of people like Somerby to point the finger of bourgeois insufficiency at her.
The book is poignant because it is told through a child's eyes, a young child who is sympathetic to the revolution, grew up with Mao, but not permitted to join in the chaos because of her grandfather's wealth. It illustrates the wrongness of hating the rich instead of remedying the problems of the poor. Harris has both empathy and compassion. I don't see that in Bernie. I see frothing at the mouth as he directs the youthful guard to destroy another household searching for contraband while they bully the occupants, all the while feeling both powerful and self-righteous. That's the Bernie vibe and the Somerby vibe as he takes a gratuitous swipe at Harris's supposed lack of red-cred. That sort of thing has an ugly history in the world and I would hate to see it performed here.
uh huh, yeah that modest tax increase after already earning 10 million, yeah that's destroying households and bullying the occupants, sure.Delete
Somerby has lost track of the fact that addressing gender inequities in pay IS a challenge to corporate looting. Corporations thrive by underpaying female employees, especially in retail and similar businesses where primarily women are employed. Paying them less than they deserve is a deliberate economic action that fattens the bottom line and enriches corporate shareholders and executives at the expense of middle and working class women and their families (their husbands are affected too because the household gets less money). So, this is an issue directly concerned with corporate looting.ReplyDelete
It is funny that Somerby differentiates between the two, as if they were two separate things and doesn't see any connection. Is that because he doesn't consider women to be workers? Or does he buy into the corporation's efforts to deflect concerted action by pitting women against men? If men joined women to demand that corporations pay everyone fairly, corporate divide-and-conquer tactics wouldn't work and everyone would benefit.
Somerby thinks women are conning men when they ask for fair wages, so it never occurs to him to see this as exactly the kind of issue Bernie should be fighting for. That's why Somerby and Bernie both come off as misogynists. They want to stop corporate looting, but they think that only applies to men.
CMike doesn't get it either.Delete
