DEATH BY STUPID: Smartest person's compliant guest host!

THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2016

Part 3—Kornacki extends a pattern:
Arguably, the smartest person on TV is on her summer vacation.

Last summer, the smartest person spent her summer vacation taking a long train ride with her parents and her partner. On the train, her mother played hearts and kibitzed at length with John Doe of the little-known band, X, which appeared on American Bandstand all the way back in the 1980s.

How do we know what the smartest person did on her summer vacation? We know because she wasted everyone's time in May telling us all about it.

Over the years, the smartest person's TV show has become a personality cult. The smartest person lets us join the club, in which we serve as Maddowsketeers.

We learn to adore the smart person more fully. For better or worse, we liberals are too gullible, too dumb, to see the problem with constant drivel of this low-IQ type:
MADDOW (5/16/16): (VIDEO CLIP OF LITTLE-KNOWN BAND, X)

That is John Doe. That is John Doe. That's when John Doe and Exene Cervenka led the amazing band, X. They were on American Bandstand way back in the early 1980s.

That was an impressionable time for me as a human being. And John Doe was the first famous person I ever patterned on as a cool person. The first super-cool person I recognized, I always wanted to be like John Doe.

My brother and I never agreed on anything, still don't. The one thing we agreed on was loving the band X and loving John Doe and everything he's done since then.

And I kid you not. After a lifetime of me being a John Doe fan, last year I ended up on a train trip, a long-haul train trip with my partner Susan and my parents, a little vacation. And it turned out John Doe was on our train. And my mom and John Doe, yes, that John Doe, sat together and played Crazy 8s on the train, the card game.

They played Crazy 8s and gin rummy. They were very competitive with each other, and it was amazing. That is John Doe who I've always worshiped. John Doe!
We even got to see photos from the trip. In such ways, we're constantly instructed in ways to adore the smartest person more fully.

Why did the smartest person waste our time that way? Duh! That day, the judge in the so-called Bridgegate case had been scheduled to release the list of unindicted co-conspirators in the case. "The Nun" had been pimping the upcoming event, hoping it would help her get Chris Christie locked up in jail.

Wouldn't you know it? In response to an emergency motion, the judge had postponed the release of the list. And who had filed the emergency motion?

Of course! Someone named John Doe! To the smartest person, this meant she should waste our time with memories of last summer's train trip, complete with photos of Mom playing cards with the real John Doe.

She helped us learn to adore her more fully, then pleasured us with the suggestion that Christie would be on that list, that he might be John Doe. In these ways, the smartest person make us liberals very dumb.

Last night, the smartest person's guest host continued a horrible pattern. Her guest host was Steve Kornacki, who once stood out on cable news as someone who actually knows things.

In the past year, the suits have had Kornacki refashion himself for TV consumption as the most energetic person. Last night, playing that role, Kornacki discussed the greatness of John B. Comey and his infallible insights.

Almost surely, this smartest program's dumbed-down viewers failed to notice the con.

How infallible are the insights of the lionized John B. Comey? If you want to start assessing that question, we'll recommend this piece at Slate by the highly experienced Fred Kaplan.

Needless to say, Kaplan wasn't on your "TV machine thingy" last night. (That's the way the smartest person likes to describe your TV set. In this way, she helps us see that she's much more fey than we are.)

Kaplan wasn't present on cable last night. The information in Kaplan's report wasn't presented either.

Instead, Kornacki rattled a somewhat garbled, Comey-friendly account of the great man's "revelations." Presumably, this text had been constructed by the smartest person's profoundly unimpressive staff.

Energetically, Kornacki noted that the Clinton campaign hadn't yet responded to Comey's revelations.
He then spoke with Ellen Tauscher, who he quickly interrupted.

He didn't mean to interrupt her. But he quickly did:
KORNACKI (7/6/16): In response to those specific revelations and contradictions, we have heard nothing from Hillary Clinton or from her campaign. The question is, can they really just continue to say nothing about this? And if they do have to say something about this eventually, what are they going to say?

Joining us now is Ellen Tauscher, former California congresswoman who also served under Hillary Clinton as under secretary of state for arms control and international security. She's a Hillary Clinton supporter.

Thanks for joining us. Let me start with, Doesn't Hillary Clinton owe an answer to what James Comey said yesterday and what he revealed?

TAUSCHER: Well, I think that the State Department gave partly an answer today when the State Department pushed back pretty significantly. They have done their own research of these e-mails. In the case of the e-mails that were potentially characterized as classified, so said FBI Director Comey yesterday, the truth of the matter is, that was a mistake. At least two of those e-mails were mischaracterized and actually did not contain classified information.

So I think the real issue here, Steve, is that—

KORNACKI: But— I don't mean to interrupt you, but you're saying at least two— Let's make sure we get the numbers straight.
He didn't mean to interrupt. But just that quickly, he did.

(In fairness, Tauscher had already misstated her initial point. As such, we see two familiar patterns enacted here. We see the official Clinton defender who can't even state her first point correctly. She's matched with the energetic corporate liberal who seems to assume Comey's infallible greatness.)

Fred Kaplan wasn't present last night. Neither was the information in his Slate report. As such, we saw a horrible pattern continue, in which Maddow pretends to fight the "Beltway" powers-that-be while bowing to their conventional wisdom.

Tell the truth. Is anyone dumber than the smartest person?

Granted, her self-adoring personality cult is pretty much off the charts. But is anyone dumber than this person and her adoring staff?

We'll say the answer is no.

All last week, the smartest person plied us with her world-class political dumbness. In closing today, let's cite one example—her absurd account of the history of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, which helps display her cluelessness about the politics of the "Clinton scandal" era in general.

Maddow often seems deeply clueless about this era, which hasn't exactly ended. Her account of the history of Don't Ask, Don't Tell betrays a tremendous political dumbness about the early 1990s. It also seems to betray an unfortunate distaste for Bill Clinton.

You can read her history of yourself. In it, she compares the skill and greatness of President Obama to the bungling of President Clinton.

Her account of what happened in 1992 and 1993 is criminally clueless. She doesn't even get her own age right when, inevitably, she tells us what she was thinking and feeling during Bill Clinton's first week in office, when she was just 19.

Eventually, this was the smartest person's thumbnail. This thumbnail is off-the-charts stupid:
MADDOW (6/30/16): Don't Ask, Don't Tell stayed on the books for almost two decades. The next time we got a Democratic president, Barack Obama had the same stated objective as Bill Clinton when he came into the office on that issue. He said he would end the ban on gay people serving in the military. But this time, the second time around, his plan worked.

And maybe it was because President Obama was better at these kind of politics than President Clinton was. Maybe, maybe, honestly he benefited from Bill Clinton screwing it up so badly, so we all had seen one way not to do it, and everybody knew not that try it that way again.

Maybe it was just that time had passed. Maybe it's a combination of all of those things.

But for whatever reason, President Obama really nailed it on Don't Ask, Don't Tell and there were a lot of skeptics, among them myself. A lot of people thought he wasn`t doing it right. A lot of people second and triple guessing him, right?

There was noise about it too, right? Same as there had been in the 1990s against President Clinton. There was plenty of resistance. But he got it done.
Good God. "Same as it had been in the 1990s?" If you recall what happened at all, that's just dumbfoundingly dumb. But we liberals were served such nonsense all last week by "arguably the smartest person on TV."

Maddow seems to have no idea how politics worked in the Clinton/Gore era. Her deeply unimpressive staff seems to be equally clueless.

That said, the children who work for our corporate liberal channel seem to have little taste for fighting The Power on these matters. That pattern continued last night.

In the fall of 2012, they rolled over and died regarding Susan Rice and Benghazi. Last summer, Chris Hayes pimped the ludicrous "bombshell report" in the New York Times about the scary uranium deal—the bombshell report the Times took from the conservative hack with shom they had swung that very strange deal.

Last night, the pattern continued. There was Kornacki, pimping the revelations of the infallible Comey. Fred Kaplan and his information were nowhere to be found.

The children seem to have no idea about the basic structure of the "Clinton scandal" era, an era which hasn't ended. Beyond that, they seem to have no taste for fighting The Power when it comes to such concerns.

Viewers gulping this low-IQ porridge are told that the porridge is liberal—and smart!

Tomorrow: Ferrari gear and an appalling "special report"

Once again, a suggestion: Fred Kaplan wasn't on cable last night. You can read his essay here.

    3. Let's check out Bob's smartest defender.

Today's post is 1773 words long.

Bob spends 534 of those words on a Maddow show in May before getting to Kornacki, who is teased in the subheading.

He then devotes 490 words to Kornacki's appearance.

That prompts him to return to yet another Maddow broadcast and devote another 565 words to something other than yesterday's show as Bob's ashram occupant asserts.

Then he returns to close the post with eight lines in which Kornacki is mentioned as many times as Somerby mentioned Gore in the previous section.

Wait. Maybe this was really about Gore!

  2. Kaplan's final words are:

"Yes, the Clintons are slippery, they have an unpleasant record of doing things their way, they have a problem when it comes to trustworthiness. Beyond that, there’s nothing here, folks, move along."

These sorts of negative statements about Clinton seem obligatory, even in articles like this one which points out there is no substance to conservative complaints and nothing new in Comey's report.

How is this an example of Clinton doing things her own way when she did exactly what Colin Powell had done, and what other cabinet members before and contemporary with her had done?

She explained complex matters to the best of her ability and yet she is called "slippery" because they couldn't catch her lying.

When people act independently and do things their own way, that is called leadership, creativity, innovation. Their success is inarguable.

Why do liberals not defend them instead of adding these obligatory agreements with the negative evaluation conservatives have tried to pin on the Clintons since forever?

Then there is the sexism. Who suggests that a male Secretary of State must get "permission" from his own staff in order to conduct his job as he sees fit? That is exactly what they said Clinton should have done -- gotten permission from her State Dept legal staff (not the external lawyers she did consult). Women bosses apparently need to be closely supervised by male subordinates or there is ouraged hell to pay.

    1. 11:24, I agree with you completely, except for the last paragraph. From the fact that Clinton is a woman, and that she gets subjected to this crap, it does not follow that she is subjected to the crap because she is a woman. This has been going on for a long time, even to male democratic pols, as pointed out for years by TDH.

  3. Can we agree now that both parties have propaganda machines on TV? But there is a big difference, with the Republican machine much more effective. Listen to what they push and repeat: lower taxes, less government regulation constraining big business, gun rights, religious rights, and more. These are all long-term political philosophies. The Democrats' propaganda seems to focus on events. Usually events that have a racist villain. Why isn't there a pounding of middle and lower class improvement through pro-union, infrastructure investment, individual protection from the rich using the power of their wealth to oppress, strengthening pension protections, and other classic liberal long-term political stances?

Instead we get fed stuff like a "scandal" involving $175,000. How much lobbying money do you think Big Pharma has to spend to increase their profits by a billion dollars? $175,000. Please, it sounds like the "one million dollars" scene in that Austin Powers movie.

    1. Nonsense. The left pushes tolerance of diversity, inclusion in the political process, restraint of business excesses, increased opportunity for the disadvantaged, redress of income inequality, a woman's right to choose, and so on. These are the themes liberals pound on and they too amount to a political philosophy. That you missed them says more about you than about liberals.

Larger issues are inherent in the smaller ones. The smaller "scandals" exemplify larger concerns. Corruption matters, whether it involves smaller dollar amounts or larger ones.

Sounds like you are saying that we shouldn't care about this particular scandal because look over there -- bigger fish to fry. Distraction. As if conservatives don't focus endlessly on the trivia.

    2. Thanks for your reply. I believe this is worth discussing.

There are two things on your list that I think "fills it out," restraint of business excesses and redress of income inequality. I believe these are not addressed effectively. Not enough people, liberals included, understand how privatizing utilities has worked out in recent cases, for example.

It is not hard to follow the money to see why shows paid for by huge media corporations do not push for policies that would decrease their power, but true liberal positions would advocate such ideas. Will the current NBC have one of their shows support a return to limits on media ownership? It is important to understand as much as possible the source of opinions, and how the issues impact the authors. That is why I think the whole jealousy complaint is childish, because a millionaire's take on an issue
will include how it affects their wealth.

To me, it does seem like we get a "management-side" tilt to many issues in the liberal propaganda, where it does not belong.

    3. @11:39, "Why isn't there a pounding of middle and lower class improvement...?"

Liberal elites, not the least of whom Rachel Maddow and her chuckling interns, don't give a rat's ass about the concerns of the working class, workers were thrown under the bus by liberals in lieu of the "professional class" and neo-liberal economic policies long ago.

To define "the left" in part as NBC Television Group/GE/Comcast Inc is ridiculous. Redressing income inequality requires challenging corporate control of the economy- something Maddow and liberals with a vested interest will NEVER do. To much money on the table. Instead we get the weak gruel of divisive "identity politics" and small time scandal.

  5. If only someone would livestream Hillary shooting a black guy for no good reason. By God, we'd have her then.

In the interest of full disclosure, the above quip was adapted from a 1974 "Doonesbury" strip in which committee members are poring over evidence & testimony to see if there's anything criminal with which Nixon could actually be charged. But the case is complicated and Nixon is slippery (this being before the revelation of the tapes). Out of frustration, one committee member says, "If only this guy would knock over a bank or something." Another responds, banging his fist on the table, "By God, we'd have him then!"

Point one being, whomever Hillary sees as her historical model, she is Nixon at heart. Point 2 being, the aforementioned strip is over 40 years old, but I hear Garry Trudeau calls people personally when he feels he's been ripped off.

    1. No, she is not Nixon at heart. She is Eleanor Roosevelt at heart.

Nixon was guilty. Clinton is not. She didn't want to give conservatives access to her private email so she instituted a way of maintaining some control over it. Whose fault is that? They went after her anyway, because damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Nixon abused the power of his office to manipulate elections and attack his enemies. Frankly, I don't see much parallel between the two.

Nixon retired in bitterness to San Clemente where he tried to restore his good name. Bill Clinton retired to run a global charity foundation that has done a great deal of good in the world. Hillary hasn't retired at all -- she is still doing good things for other people and trying to get elected in order to implement her vision for how government can help improve lives. If she wanted money, she could gone on giving speeches for big bucks ad infinitum, or joined some boards (as papa Bush did). She isn't the doing the kinds of things people who value money or political power typically do. She is doing the kinds of self-sacrificing things women do -- women who devote their lives to helping others.

In the meantime, everyone is ignoring the FEC violations of Trump's campaign, his bribery of an AG to get her to stop investigating his "University," and his mob connections. Why is that? Is Garry Trudeau's modern equivalent too lazy to chase actual stories, too stupid to figure out who is the actual "crooked" candidate in this race?

And while we're at it, why is Bernie still in the race? What kinds of salaries are his wife and children still receiving?

    2. Isn't the point that she (and Bill) never actually do anything much wrong, so there is nothing to catch them at?

      http://www.nationalmemo.com/email-servers-are-just-the-latest-manufactured-scandal/

Jeeves might as well have used Al Capone as an example, the way they got him on income tax evasion because they couldn't prove anything else. Implying that the Clinton's (the most scrutinized political couple on earth) are engaged in lots of bad stuff but never get caught, is ludicrous. If they were guilty of anything remotely wrong, the conservatives would have nailed them long ago. Instead all they could find was a blow job by a consenting adult, admittedly out of wedlock. And they all fainted while the public shrugged and said "so what?"

Hillary isn't crooked. Bill isn't slick or slippery. They are just unusually effective Democratic politicans who the Republicans would rather not see hold office.

Trump, on the other hand, is an actual bad guy, no matter how effective he might be at torturing terrorists.

  6. "Her guest host was Steve Kornacki, who once stood out on cable news as someone who actually knows things."

A stroll down memory lane from Howler archives to demonstrate the kind of things Kornacki knew before falling from Howler grace:

"Kornacki knows what he’s talking about!

    TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2014

Suggests a billion good reasons for the access lane closings: Steve Kornacki has been breaking the rules established for cable news talent.

He seems to know what he’s talking about. He doesn’t restrict himself to the mouthing of nostrums and scripts and to the dropping of R-bombs.

Kornacki is especially well versed concerning the state of New Jersey, where he began his journalistic career. This has made him the press corps’ most valuable player concerning the Fort Lee fandango."

And what did Kornacki know? Nothing. He suggested a theory that the shut down of lanes to the George Washington Bridge was part of a plan to extort developers of a nearby multi billion dollar land deal and building project. This theory, like the false tale that there was actually a traffic study (Bob Somerby's favored theory) proved worthless. Nonetheless it earned Bob's praise in real time.

But remember. Somerby once praised Maddow. Until she praised Chris Matthews.

    3. January 2008: Rachel Maddow got her prize—and poor Chris Matthews had to report it. His cable channel was propagandizing its way through Nevada and South Carolina. And uh-oh! Shortly before 8 P.M. Eastern, Matthews introduced Pat Buchanan—and Maddow. As he did, he made an announcement— one he didn’t seem to enjoy.

Reading from the telerompter, he said that Maddow is now “an MSNBC political analyst.” Darn it! We couldn’t get our VCR running quickly enough to catch the talker’s full comment. But we did capture him saying this, with a somewhat menacing aspect:

MATTHEWS (1/19/08): Congratulations. I didn’t know anything about that, and if I had had anything to do with it, I might have gotten involved.

You’re right—his words don’t quite parse. And Rachel agreed to say ha ha ha, just like two old pals were joshing. But based on tone—and a decade of Matthews-watching—we would guess that Chris wasn’t pleased at the revoltin’ new development. We’d guess that Matthews wasn’t pleased to see Maddow getting her prize.

Why would Matthews have been displeased? On the evening of the New Hampshire primary, Maddow broke every rule in the book; she told Matthews, to his face, right on the air, that liberals were saying that he was the cause of Hillary Clinton’s win in New Hampshire—that his gender-based trashing of Hillary Clinton had made people very mad. This broke every rule of On-Air Pundit Conduct.

We were happily married with two kids, a boy and a girl. 3 months ago, I started to notice some strange behavior from him and a few weeks later I found out that my husband is seeing someone. He started coming home late from work, he hardly care about me or the kids anymore, Sometimes he goes out and doesn't even come back home for about 2-3 days. I did all I could to rectify this problem but all to no avail. I became very worried and needed help. Then she gave me the email address of the spell caster whom she visited.(happylovespell2@gmail.com}, So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address she gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my husband back the next day what an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning, So surprisingly, my husband who did not call me for the past seven {2}weeks,gave me a call to inform me that he was coming back So Amazing!! So that was how he came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and he apologized for his mistake, and for the pain he caused me and my children. Then from that day,our relationship was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster . So, i will advice you out there to kindly visit Dr happy ,if you are in any condition like this,or you have any problem related to "bringing your ex back. So thanks to Dr happy for bringing back my husband, and brought great joy to my family once again. { happylovespell2@gmail.com }, Thanks you Dr happy, i will always be testifying about your good work. also call him on +2348133873774.your spell is really a 100% Guarantee sure and safe

  15. I broke up with my boyfriend almost 3 months ago. Within a week he had a new girlfriend. He told me he just wants to be friends i agreed but could not get over him, I felt like I lost my one and only true love, my situation became a bit complicated and a bit different than the “normal breakups, ”but thanks to manifestspellcast@yahoo.com for bringing my lover back to me,...when i first contacted him, i was very unsure if a love spell can bring my lover back... But after such a long time of loneliness i decided that Manifest Spell should do a love spell for me to get my lover back. Well after Manifest Spell cast the spell and told me what to do, within few days my lover came back feeling so sorry for living me lonely for 3 months, the love spell was so amazing that i could not believe what was happening. my lover came to my house and asked for reconciliation... he now shows me love more than before thanks.

  16. Me and my boyfriend were seriously in love for 3 years and we were planning to get married but one day he came to my house and told me he was no longer interested in our relationship simply because he was dating another lady who promise to buy him a car and to sponsor their wedding. And i suffered a heartbreak for five months and i was not tired of loving him. One faithful day as i was browsing through the internet, i saw a testimony on how a spell caster helped a man to get back his wife after two years of losing his wife because he was no longer having a job. through this Email manifestspellcast@yahoo.com, i sent an email to Manifest Spell contact him for help and surprisingly my boy friend came back 3 days after the help of the spell caster. and now we are happily back together. He is the most trusted, genuine and real love spell caster.
