A few of the things we saw last night!

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2022

Right there on our TV machine: We lost a chunk of time today, then watched the soccer game. With apologies, we thought we'd offer a list of things we saw on TV last night.

First, we watched the opening segment of Tucker Carlson Tonight. We saw the program's disordered host engage in the last example of his strangely unhinged behavior.

Later, thanks to On Demand, we watched a good chunk of our own channel's Deadline: White House. Make Way for Ducklings popped into our heads as we watched the program's host, Nicolle Wallace, adumbrate a series of themes, knowing that her many guests would waddle directly along in her wake, repeating every word she had said.

Also, we saw Rachel Maddow play actual videotape of the suddenly famous, 24-year-old Nick Fuentes. The videotape had come from People for the American Way.

For our money, some of the statements on the tape had been over-edited. But we'll have to say that Fuentes came across like a tragically genuine nut.

(Then too, there was the increasingly nutty online Washington Post, pursuing its new, post-newspaper ways in today's early hours.)

Our nation's political elites have long since divided into tribes. One tribe is crazier than the other, but that second tribe is larded with overpaid recitation experts who actually ought to know better.

These tribes are working to establish a world of Us and Them. We don't think a whole lot of good can come of these round-the-clock efforts.

Fuentes seemed like a genuine nut. Our own stars made us think of the famous book about all those imprinted ducklings.

We wish we could offer you more detail. We've lost a bunch of time in the past few days.

Alos this: The U.S. won the soccer game in a blowout, 1-0.

  1. Poor Bob. It looks like some more of these "tragic" nuts are going to go to jail. And unlike us liberal meanies, Bob
does not like people going to jail.
In a lot of the coverage of Fuentes, they just labeled
him a hater and traitor of various stripes. What
MSNBC showed us last night is that that is true.
Nothing suggested any tricky editing, as Bob
    pathetically suggests.
True is a fashion that there is no room for
    or silly whataboutish finger pointing.
You don't have to agree with MSNBC all the
time, or enjoy the cutesy poo back slapping that
seems to be how the game is played.
What they showed us last night was that the
worst of what has been about President Trump
and his followers is completely true.
    Bob is a child.
Bob is not man enough to admit he has
clearly had his head up his ass.
Why has he behaved in such a strange way?
Semi professional jealousy? Is somebody paying
him off? Who can say but Bob.
Yes Bob, our culture is in deep trouble.
    And you are exhibit A.

  2. Right, Bob.

Your tribe merely brought us the Russia nonsense, the Steele Dossier, “Hands Up Don’t Shoot”, FISA warrant fraud, the “Summer of Love”, Jussie Smollett, Kavanaugh rape hearings, BLM estate realty, the FTX scam, and the Trump nuclear document mementoes.

    But Qanon…

    1) Nicole Wallace is a Republican

    2) Nicole Wallace's staff research their guests, thus the thematic commonality that so disturbs poor Somerby

    3) Nick Fuentes is notorious, not famous

4)Nick Fuentes' notoriety is not sudden, he has been a well known entity for several years

    5) Nick Fuentes is not a "nut", he is a run of the mill right winger (aka Republican)

What on earth is wrong with a cable news host being a "recitation expert"? That is their job. Carlson froths at the mouth. You'd think Somerby would prefer someone more temperate, like Wallace, but he chooses to complain about MSNBC instead of FOX. That is strangely disordered in my opinion.

  7. The way Somerby keeps calling white people "tribes" is a kind of cultural appropriation, in my opinion. The only real tribes in our culture are Indian tribes. Maybe that's why Somerby objects so strongly to historians who want to examine myths about Indians. We might find out none of their tribes are Republican, although some may be red (loosely speaking).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why would Indians be the only real tribes?

      Delete
    2. Because the term tribe refers to a specific kind of social organization that exists among Indians but not among other people in the US these days. The term was devised by anthropologists to describe that type of organization, not to mischaracterize political parties, the way Somerby uses it. This is yet another annoying way in which Somerby "borrows" and corrupts language for his own purposes, ignoring others in the process.

      Delete
    3. There are tribes in Afghanistan. In Scotland, there are tribes:

"The term clan, now applied almost exclusively to the tribes into which the Scottish Highlanders were formerly, and still to some extent are divided, was also applied to those large and powerful septs into which the Irish people were at one time divided, as well as to the communities of freebooters that inhabited the Scottish borders, each of which, like the Highland clans, had a common surname. "

The people who came to the US may have been part of clans or tribes in their original countries, but the US as never been organized as tribes, except for the indigenous people (Native Americans, aka Indians).

    4. Why would anyone think of it as cultural appropriation when it is an Anglo word applied by Anglos?

    6. TDH is using the term "tribes" metaphorically, a perfectly legitimate way of communicating, to describe the current polarization between "evil" conservatives and "rational" liberals. He has the nerve to suggest that liberals aren't always that rational, and to suggest that this tendency might impede somehow the polarization to be less extreme. a number of commenters here (thery're almost all anons so it's not easy to determine how many of them there are) are outraged by TDH's heresy.

    7. The Left irrationality as compared to the Right is a sub atomic particle compared to a galaxy.

Furthermore, Somerby's examples of Left irrationality are typically either obscure and insignificant, or twisting of something that is perfectly rational.

Considering all that, Somerby's use of the word "tribe" is to weaponize it, to use it as a blunt tool to bludgeon Dems with, a group for which he seethes with bitterness; so, as pointed out, it is improper and inappropriate the way Somerby uses that word.

Understandably, fanboys will defend their "heroes".

It might be better if Somerby were simply to explain that he has been busy. The term "lost time" refers to memory loss that occurs with drug use or various kinds of amnesias. He may not understand that about a phrasing that he perhaps finds cute. Or maybe he is having medical difficulties. The problem is that it is hard to know what he means to be saying with this phrase, lost time.
