...of its wisest people? In fairness, anyone can make a clumsy statement, especially when they're talking.
According to Attorney General Pam Bondi, that's what happened to Attorney General Pam Bondi back on February 21.
Bondi was asked a fairly straightforward question during a Fox News interview. When John Roberts asked, Bondi gave what seemed to be a fairly straightforward answer.
ROBERTS (2/21/25): I saw your appearance at CPAC with Bannon and with Ted Cruz, and one of the things that you alluded to, and this is something Donald Trump has talked about--
The DOJ may be releasing the list of Jeffrey Epstein's clients? Will that really happen?
BONDI: It’s sitting on my desk right now to review. That’s been a directive by President Trump. I’m reviewing that.
She seemed to have said that the aforementioned client list was "sitting on [her] desk!"
By now, we've been told that no such client list exists. Jost last week, the attorney general explained:
BONDI (7/8/25): In February, I did an interview on Fox, and it's been getting a lot of attention because I was asked a question about the client list, and my response was, "It's sitting on my desk to be reviewed"—meaning the file, along with the JFK, MLK files as well. That's what I meant by that.
According to Bondi, that's what she meant by what she said on that earlier fateful day. We can't swear that her explanation is bogus. On the other hand, this:
That's what Bondi says she meant on February 21. On February 27, she may have seemed to stage a bit of a gong show, as reported that day by CBS News:
Right-wing influencers get binders labeled "The Epstein Files," but downplay revelations
A group of 15 right-wing influencers visited the White House on Thursday and emerged with binders labeled "The Epstein Files: Phase 1" that they obtained from Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has vowed to release information held by the Justice Department about the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
But some of those who received the binder said there was little new information in the files. Bondi later released a statement with links to the documents, and said, "The first phase of declassified files largely contains documents that have been previously leaked but never released in a formal capacity by the U.S. Government."
Torn away from the work they love, the influencers had been flown to D.C., only to get a bunch of material everyone already had!
Some were peeved at their inclusion in the weird event. Aa of today, David French reports the ongoing fallout from this rolling mess in his new column for the New York Times:
MAGA Is Tearing Itself Apart Over Jeffrey Epstein
Last week President Trump’s Department of Justice delivered a blow to one of the foundational beliefs of the MAGA movement, one that helped carry him back to the White House.
In an unsigned memorandum, the department declared that there was no evidence that Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced deceased convicted sexual predator, maintained a client list or that he blackmailed prominent individuals for various misdeeds. The memorandum also declared that Epstein committed suicide.
Most Americans saw this news (if they saw it at all) and barely raised an eyebrow. The Epstein story was part of the past; he died in 2019. But it detonated like a bomb in the MAGA universe. Pro-Trump influencers with vast audiences couldn’t believe what they were reading.
[...]
The Epstein story mattered so much in MAGA circles because it was a key element in their indictment of America’s so-called ruling class. Trump’s appeal to the Republican base isn’t just rooted in his supporters’ extraordinary affection for the man; it’s also rooted in their almost indescribably dark view of the American government.
On the farthest fringes of this movement, that "almost indescribably dark view of the American government" has included the belief that—well, you've heard it all before, but this is the way the leading authority starts:
QAnon
QAnon is a far-right American political conspiracy theory and political movement that originated in 2017. QAnon centers on fabricated claims made by an anonymous individual or individuals known as "Q". Those claims have been relayed and developed by online communities and influencers. Their core belief is that a cabal of Satanic, cannibalistic child molesters in league with the deep state is operating a global child sex trafficking ring and that Donald Trump is secretly leading the fight against them.
And so on from there. "QAnon has direct roots in Pizzagate," the authority sadly reports.
So it goes as we the people continue to learn about the types of claims we humans may be inclined to believe, even with great fervor. All in all, sometimes we're "the rational animal," but a lot of the time it looks like we just aren't!
At any rate, turmoil has erupted in the wake of official reports according to which Jeffrey Epstein didn't leave a client list and actually wasn't murdered. That seems to mean that he wasn't even murdered by Hillary Clinton!
(On the Fox News Channel's Gutfeld! show, the program's deeply peculiar host keeps implying, night after night, that Hillary Clinton really is a person who goes around killing people. So it goes as the American experiment flirts with reaching its end, thanks in large part to the endless misconduct produced on this gruesome channel.)
In these post-"democratization of media" days, this is the way corporate messaging is now delivered to those who may be inclined to be influenced. In the case of the Gutfeld! program, the Fox News Channel assembles an ever-shifting panel of flyweights to drive its mountains of messaging forward, even as Blue America's mainstream media agree to avert their gaze.
Bondi has now explained what she says she meant. Still, a large part of the pro-Trump base is in a very large fury. Meanwhile, the president has returned to the threat of imposing very large tariffs on countries which displease him—and he says he has somehow discovered a fact about Vladimir Putin which everyone else had somehow managed to know all along.
All in all, the American discourse is a rapidly rolling clown car. It has been for some time.
This flies in the face of what we've long been told about our status as "the rational animal." But the clown show will roll along without anyone making a major attempt to rethink or recast that ancient delusion.
In one of his latest furious posts, President Trump has said he can't understand why his followers are upset with Bondi. Last Tuesday, he said he can't understand why reporters still want to talk about Jeffrey Epstein, ignoring the way his own top aides have been promoting the topic for years.
This is the shape of American discourse in The Summer of 25. Long ago and far away, in a famous skit on Saturday Night Live, Jon Lovitz, cast as a bewildered Michael Dukakis, made a bewildered statement whose spirit lives on today:
I can't believe I'm losing to this guy!
The Dukakis character made that statement about Candidate George H. W. Bush, who was in fact on his way to a win in the 1988 White House campaign. At the time, the bewilderment seemed funny and instructive.
Carried into the present day, Blue America might ask ourselves a related question. That said, the whole framework probably doesn't seem especially funny now.
Last November, for the second time, we Blues (narrowly) lost the White House to the candidate who sits at the head of the movement encompassing QAnon and the Epstein client list.
There's also concern about chemtrails, or possibly contrails. Mediaite reports:
Trump EPA Honcho Comes to Defense of Americans With ‘Questions’ About Chemtrails
President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency head Lee Zeldin launched two new resources to deliver “total transparency” for Americans curious about “geoengineering and contrails,” whom he said had been unfairly “vilified” for years for questions asked in “good faith.”
[...]
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other agencies, contrails are produced by a combination of water vapor in aircraft engine exhaust ejected at low ambient temperatures....
The “chemtrails” conspiracy theory posits that the white condensation trails left by airplanes are toxic chemical or biological sprays spread by nefarious actors. Followers of the idea speculate on a range of reasons, including population manipulation and weather control.
Zeldin’s announcement drew immediate backlash from Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), who is co-chair of Caucus On Climate and called the proposal to investigate “genuinely insane.”
For better or worse, Rep. Beyer dropped the I-bomb on the head of Zeldin's proposal. With respect to the current endless turmoil, we would mainly recommend this:
For those of us in Blue America, it's long been easy to mock the part of the MAGA base which may be drawn to somewhat exotic beliefs and concerns. We Blues have shown little interest in exploring a related question:
How is it possible that we have managed to lose to these guys two times?
There's more than one way to answer that question. This week, we'll start to explore this possibility:
Is it possible that we Blues have somehow done certain things unwisely?
In what ways might we Blues have gone wrong? Is it possible that we Blues have shown imperfect political judgment down through the many failed years?
It's long past time for us to seek the answer to such questions. This week, the surprising name of a new podcast will provide the starting point for our exploration.
No people are uninteresting, Yevtushenko said. We've recommended the spirit of that point of view down through these dangerous years.
Tomorrow: No people are uninteresting, Yevtushenko said
Steven Pinker is innocent.
ReplyDeleteHe gave polling data to the Russians.
DeleteThat troll is right. Pinker is innocent.
DeleteI am not a sock puppet.
How can we know whether Pinker is innocent without seeing the list of Epstein's clients, to know that his name isn't on that list? Why is there a deposition against Pinker, his name on flight lists, his pictures with Epstein, his own voluntary effort to help Epstein at trial, if Pinker is so innocent.
DeleteMost normal men are repulsed by Epstein's behavior. Why wasn't Pinker?
You can fulminate all you want, but Pinker is still innocent.
DeletePinker's pecker penetrated pubescent private parts. Perverted prick!
DeleteYou just make him seem more guilty with your protestations.
DeleteIt doesn’t matter how I make him seem. He’s innocent.

DeleteLeft and right media are reporting different stories about the Biden pardons. The NY Times ran an article based on an interview where Biden says he made all the decisions. The right is focusing on a part of that very article to claim that some decisions were made by staff without Biden's knowledge
ReplyDeleteMr. Biden did not individually approve each name for the categorical pardons that applied to large numbers of people, he and aides confirmed. Rather, after extensive discussion of different possible criteria, he signed off on the standards he wanted to be used to determine which convicts would qualify for a reduction in sentence.
Even after Mr. Biden made that decision, one former aide said, the Bureau of Prisons kept providing additional information about specific inmates, resulting in small changes to the list. Rather than ask Mr. Biden to keep signing revised versions, his staff waited and then ran the final version through the autopen, which they saw as a routine procedure, the aide said.
By contrast, Mr. Biden said in the interview, he discussed each of the high-profile individuals with aides. He used General make all the Milley as an example.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/13/us/politics/biden-pardon-autopen-trump.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
The New York Times is right of center.
DeleteIn fact, the New York Times is far-right, together with the serving global finance Democrat party.
DeleteAnne Althouse, retired law Professor, seldom takes a stand on what she reports. She clearly doubts Biden's story. She wrote
Delete"'I made every decision,' Mr. Biden said in a phone interview on Thursday, asserting that he had his staff use an autopen replicating his signature on the clemency warrants because 'we’re talking about a whole lot of people.'"
How does he know he made every decision? ... Am I a liar if I presume he did nothing more than rubber-stamp whatever was recommended by the staff?... it's [the large number of pardons] also a reason to wonder if he knew much or anything about what he was doing.
... And yet the reasons to take ownership after the fact are completely different from the reasons to make the decision in the first place.
By the way, Biden did hand-sign his full and unconditional pardon of his son Hunter.
https://althouse.blogspot.com/2025/07/i-made-every-decision-says-joe-biden.html
Biden is not the president. There is no point in trying to cancel his presidency with more conspiracy theories about whether he made his own decisions. He has appear in person and been interviewed and clearly said he made those decisions himself. The right is going to need a truck full of evidence to contest that statement, and so far they have nothing. That makes David's quote today nothing but distraction.
DeleteDivert, deflect, distract. That is Dickhead in Cals' job here. Just tell the fucking fascist freak troll to go fuck himself.
DeleteI agree with @12:44 that the evidence is much to skimpy to undo any of the autopen actions. Still, I think it's important to know the facts for the sake of history.
DeleteAlso, the facts could lead to legislation. AFAIK there's no law permitting or prohibiting a President to sign a law or executive action by means of the autopen. Maybe there should be a requirement that there be some sort of written record confirming that that the President made the decision.
The evidence is much too skimpy to claim that you know any facts except the most obvious one here. Biden has explicitly said in public that he made his own decisions including the autopen ones.
DeleteThe autopen was first used by Eisenhower. There is no basis for claiming now that this was something unusual, or that it indicated Biden couldn't sign his own papers.
Right wing alcoholic Ann Althouse has opinions while drunk.
DeleteIf a new law was made about use of an autopen, it couldn't be applied retroactively to Biden. This has never been a problem until now, when Republicans have decided to continue harrassing Biden, who is no longer president. His administration is now part of history and cannot be undone except through Trump's forward-going decisions. Leave Biden alone. You are coming across as a partisan ghoul.
DeleteChecks notes, nobody fucking cares about yesterday's news.
DeleteThe evidence is much too skimpy? Cracka, please. The guy was brain-dead, didn't know where he was or who he was. "We finally beat Medicare!" And some unelected, unknown swindlers used presidential authority for their own purposes. How is this "evidence is much too skimpy"?
Delete@1:44 Do you really not care about Jan 6?
DeleteDavid cannot handle Somerby's post today cause he can't handle the truth. Nothing but troll distraction today. Weirdos, the whole lot
Delete1:46 Checks notes, the autogolper is currently fucking President. Yikes! That is fucking news, bad news for peace, justice and the American way of old men fucking little girls without consequences. Weirdo.
DeleteGo take a flying fuck, Dickhead in Cal.
DeleteIt's impossible to demonstrate that Biden didn't know who was being pardoned. So, let's move on from this non-news. By definition, everything that Biden did as president is legal.
Delete@1:45 A theory is not evidence.

Delete"impossible to demonstrate" + 2:46
His doctor took the fifth. Which means that he probably committed crimes. Give him immunity and ask him again, and he'll demonstrate alright.
patients "have the right to confidentiality when it comes to your health care."
DeleteThe doctor took the fifth, Soros-bot. Do you understand what it means?
DeleteIt means you can take your fucking questions and shove them up your corrupt treasonous asses, maggot breath.
Delete""We want to emphasize that asserting the Fifth Amendment privilege does not imply that Dr. O’Connor has committed any crime," said his legal team.
DeleteAnd the statement also indicated there was concern about O’Connor keeping medical information of the First Patient in confidence.
"The Committee has indicated that it will demand that Dr. O’Connor reveal, without any limitations, confidential confirmation regarding his medical examinations, treatment and care of President Biden," read the statement. "Revealing confidential patient information would violate the most fundamental ethical duty of a physician."
His attorneys went on to say that O’Connor could face "civil liability" and "revocation" of his medical license."
So, they managed to teach you to copy and paste, Soros-bot? How nice.
DeleteEveryone should be able to read the answer to the question posed above about why the Dr. took the 5th.
DeleteNo one cares for lawyers' bullshit, Soros-bot. The doctor took the fifth, didn't answer a single question. He's asking for immunity. Like I said, give the asshole immunity, and he'll sing like a canary. And they'll probably have all the evidence they need to cancel everything signed by Your Lord Autopen.
DeleteAre you people sure that Trump individually reviewed and hand signed 2500 J6 pardons?
DeleteOr is that "different" somehow?
lawyer bullshit = law
DeleteHis doctor took the fifth. Which means that he probably committed crimes. Give him immunity and ask him again, and he'll demonstrate alright.
DeletePoppycock. First of all, his doctor invoked doctor/patient privilege. Secondly, his doctor took the fifth not to get ensnared in any bullshit fishing expeditions that the GOP nitwits are known for. That was to protect himself.
ReplyDeleteIt's safe to assume that every good, decent person is on "The List", Bob. End of story.
Also, since everything good-decent-idiot-Democrats don't want to be investigated is labeled "conspiracy theory", and "chemtrails" is labeled "conspiracy theory" now (and not just ordinary, but "insane"!), it certainly sounds like it would make sense to investigate this shit. How could it hurt, Bob?
To be clear, science is not a conspiracy theory just because Marjorie Taylor Greene never paid attention in school. And yes, she is insane.
DeleteI think our dear essayist has already provided the scientifically answers. Bless you heart.
DeleteI think you are missing a word and have a typo. Please proofread your comment and try again.
DeleteTrying to talk down to third grader level the felon speechufies at you for.
DeleteBetter late than never. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued sweeping new orders to fast-track drone production and deployment, allowing commanders to procure and test [drones] independently and requiring drone combat simulations across every branch of the military.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.foxnews.com/politics/hegseth-tears-up-red-tape-orders-pentagon-begin-drone-surge-trumps-command
If we haven't had drones before, how did we wipe out ISIS and Al Qaeda? Weren't we criticized for wiping out civilians and innocent family members in such drone attacks?
DeleteIf Hegseth has decided all branches of the military now require drones, are you certain that these new drones won't be used against US citizens and civilians, for spying and for wiping out political opponents? What justification of need is there for using drones? Did Trump just decide they were cool? When did Hegseth acquire military expertise? I don't see this as necessarily a good thing.
To be fair, not the $5M US military industrial drones, the $3,000 Ukrainian style drones accounting for 70% of the fucking Russian's deaths. At least I hope that is what the DUI hire and fucking moron shitty ax thrower sexual assaulter is talking about.
DeleteBut ask yourself why Hegseth is arming all branches with such drones when we are not fighting any wars? What will prevent these from being used against civilians in this country, when Trump is showing absolutely no self-restraint in using other military against civilians in our cities.
DeleteThey are already classifying small "boats" with three drones on top an aircraft carrier. It is a whole new world. And police long been using drones now. If not locked and loaded, will be soon. Homan calls open hunting season on all brown people. World and country done be toast.
DeleteGeorge H.W. Bush was not a moron like his son. He was a war hero, a man who had dedicated his life to public service, married to an admirable woman similarly involved in community betterment, with no scandals and a sound background. He is in many respects admirable, unlike other Republicans before and after his term.
ReplyDeleteSNL is prone to facile, easy comedy that requires very little thought. Lorne Michaels is right wing, and for a long time the show has mocked both parties. Yes, they made fun of Sarah Palin, but they also mocked Hillary and all of the Democratic candidates.
Dukakis got ratfucked but the elder Bush was not an easy candidate to defeat in his first run for president because he was a genuinely good man with solid accomplishments, whatever you think of his politics. Unlike George W. Bush, H.W. displayed character in his life.
George H. Bush won because he promised to be Reagan's third term. He lost re-election because he wasn't.
DeleteHe was Compromised In Action.
DeleteNevertheless, he was a solid candidate with a strong record. Saying "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy" makes no sense about Bush because he was a worthy adversary with stronger credentials and more experience than Dukakis, following a popular president. Dukakis wasn't as good a candidate so of course he lost.
DeleteThose who were not around when Bush ran will not understand that Bush was not the convicted rapist and fraud, liar, cheat, buffoon that Trump is. It is simple to explain why Hillary and Kamala lost to Trump while Biden won. They had sexism and racism against them (kindly referred to as the bro vote), massive interference by Russia and billionaires, and Trump blatantly cheated. Combine that with a carnival atmosphere in which low information voters were lied to, and lack of enthusiastic support from their own party, and Trump won. Hillary wrote a book called "What Happened." Somerby has never read it and never mentioned it here, even though it lists her own analysis of what went wrong in her campaign.
One reason why Hillary and Harris lost to Trump is that he shouldn't have been allowed to run in the first place. When he told lies and broke rules, he should have been held to account, by the media and by his own party. He wasn't and he still isn't being held accountable.
I hope the MAGAs will finally do it, but I don't hold my breath. Trump will die and perhaps our country will reform some of its processes, but when our highest court cannot control Trump's violations of law and our Constitution, I have little hope things will improve soon. But even Nazi Germany was brought to heel, at great cost in human lives, and is now a rational country again. I hope it will not take another civil war to restore our democracy, but we have been there before. The right wing has been slavering for such a war forever. There doesn't seem to be any provocation so far that is strong enough to force people to stand up to Trump. But this isn't over yet.
In the last several days, at least two American citizens have been arrested by ICE. One was pulled from his car. The other, a woman, was kidnapped off the street as she was walking into her workplace. Later, ICE claimed that they were interfering with ICE activities. They both deny that.
DeleteNow that ICE is grabbing citizens and ginning up false charges to justify their abuse of power, will those who are observing call for a halt? I hear crickets. This is no longer just about illegal immigrants, much less criminals. It is about everyday people with passports who are just going about their lives, not attending rallies but going to work.
Is that OK with you? Is it OK with Somerby? It isn't OK with me. There will be another day of protest on July 17. I plan to be there.
The joke was on Dukakis, not Bush. Somerby is saying that the Dems are feeble if we couldn't defeat Trump, but Trump had a lot of things going for him (as listed above). He just lacked all the same things his appointees lack: experience, qualifications, judgment, legitimacy, ideas, a grasp of policy, character, dedication to public service, sound advisors, a vision for America, etc.
DeleteI blame the American people for electing Trump twice. I do not blame the Democrats as Somerby wants to, because I believe the Dems did the best they could and because they came closer to recognizing Trump for what he is, than the right has.
There doesn't seem to be any provocation so far that is strong enough to force people to stand up to Trump. But this isn't over yet.
DeleteIt is still early. What do you think the orange fascist is doing in LA besides trying to provoke the citizens and use that as an excuse to invoke The Insurrection Act. That fat coward has been itching to do it. Our constitutional republic is dead. This will not end well.
anon 1:54, Trump is not a "convicted rapist." The plaintiff in a civil suit against Trump including "rape" as one of her claims. If you lose a civil suit you are not "convicted." he also wasn't found liable for "rape" in the civil case. Ask George Stephanopoulos - his employer settled a defamation case for $15,000,000 because George made the same mistake as you.
DeleteThe judge called him an adjudicated rapist because the defamation claim depended on the fact of the rape having occurred.
DeleteGiven that there is a Supreme Court Justice named John Roberts, it might make sense for Somerby to identify the John Roberts in today's essay as a different person, the host of a Fox News show. Somerby gives us an entire rundown on those young female journalists, including their age and what school they attended but he can't be bothered to clarify which John Roberts the Attorney General of the US was talking to when she made her quoted remarks. This omission makes the rest of Somerby's annoying legalisms about a list vs a file seem fatuous.
ReplyDeleteI suppose there must be thousands of John Robertses. Dozens of them are prominent enough to have Wikipedia articles.
Deletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Roberts_(disambiguation)
Exactly. All the more reason to clarify which one he is referring to. But Somerby routinely identifies the female reporters who he quotes. Why not this time? Is he deliberately trying to further that confusion by implying that a Supreme Court Justice asked Bondi questions?
DeleteSomerby is back to calling humanity "not rational" again, as a species. To justify that, he really needs to compare humans against dogs or chimps. Neither of those other species comes even as close as the dumbest human to being rational, whatever Somerby means by that term. That makes these constant derogatory remarks reviling humans for not thinking the way Somerby thinks they should, annoying and wrong.
ReplyDeleteWhen we each get to those pearly gates, God will give each of us an individual exam to determine residency. He is not going to condemn our entire species on the basis of the silliest person among Trump's troup of "sewer clowns" (as Tiedrich calls them). Somerby hasn't been fully rational himself lately, so I think he needs to sharpen his own wits before calling other people names. God frowns on casting stones at others without tending to one's own garden.
I’m rational.

"We Blues have shown little interest in exploring a related question:
ReplyDeleteHow is it possible that we have managed to lose to these guys two times?
There's more than one way to answer that question. This week, we'll start to explore this possibility:
Is it possible that we Blues have somehow done certain things unwisely?
In what ways might we Blues have gone wrong? Is it possible that we Blues have shown imperfect political judgment down through the many failed years?"
Democrats do nothing but beat ourselves up over every loss. We have taken plenty of self-blame, to the point that Somerby's assertion that we have been unwilling to look at ourselves is ludicrous. But perhaps Somerby can be excused given that he is not himself a Democrat (a member of Blue America) and doesn't seem to spend much time reading blue discourse. I don't believe he has ever quoted an actual blue blog here (not Digby, not Marcy Wheeler, not Josh Marshall, not Robert Reich or Thom Hartmann, not even Heather Cox Richardson). Is it possible Somerby has never read any of these folks?
Meanwhile, Somerby himself has been entirely unwilling to consider the sources of Democratic loss to Trump that have been posited and explored by so many others: (1) Russian interference, (2) voter suppression by Republicans, (3) injection of money into campaigns after Citizens United made it legal for PACs to participate in elections, (4) injection of foreign money into campaigns, again by Russia but also others, (5) manipulation of social media using bots and troll farms, again by Russia but also others, (6) co-opting of mainstream media and use of the media to conduct disinformation and propaganda campaigns against the left, most obvious the "Biden is too old" campaign waged by the Washington Post and the New York Times using Russia-created altered videos (fakes) showing a doddering Biden, (7) hacking and interference with Democratic campaigns and the DNC, (8) donation of huge amounts of money to campaigns and primaries by billionaires such as Musk, (9) violation of FEC rules by Trump, (10) failure of the Trump campaign to follow rules, including trying to give Biden covid by refusing to wear masks or be tested while infected at a debate.
There is still a great deal we do not know about how Trump broke rules, enlisted allies to engage in illegal acts against opponents, and collusion with Russia in all three campaigns.
Somerby's go-to move here has been to blame the Democrats for being Democrats while ignoring any of these other potential causes of Hillary's defeat and later Harris's defeat. Somerby has never been willing to ask whether Trump's name-calling (Hillary is crooked, Harris is a ho) damaged Democrats. It may be that lying is an effective strategy when all constraints on such behavior have been removed. What happened when trump lied but the NY Times refused to call his lies what they were, deliberate falsehoods. I recall Somerby arguing here that Trump's false statements could not be called lies and that it was inappropriate for the press to identify them as such, much less print the truth in fact-checking Trump.
So, Somerby has a lot of nerve claiming that Democrats don't do self-criticism when he himself has never been willing to fully examine what has happened to elect Trump. Now he is back at it again. No, we Democrats have not encouraged the right to believe their weird conspiracy theories, but we DO want Epstein's accomplices and clients to be identified, including Trump. And no, it is not wrong to attack opposing parties when they engage in so much wrongdoing. We don't think such attacks will push red voters closer to Trump because they never seem to push blue voters toward our candidates when we attack the right. We should have done more of it, sooner, and not wasted time trying to be fair and not exceed the proof at hand with our accusations. Our mistake was being too nice.
Misogyny and Racism are hella drugs man.

...of its wisest people? In fairness, anyone can make a clumsy statement, especially when they're talking.
According to Attorney General Pam Bondi, that's what happened to Attorney General Pam Bondi back on February 21."
Is Somerby suggesting that Pam Bondi is one of red America's wisest people? It sounds like it. But she has no reputation for wisdom. She has been a deeply connected FL party hack and associate of Trump's during her entire career.
These statements by Somerby at the beginning of today's essay sound like he is defending Bondi for a misstatement, excusing her. But his first sentence is about Blue America, not Bondi. Does Somerby think we in Blue America have anything to do with Epstein? We don't. That is a purely Republican mess they have gotten themselves into.
It is reasonable for MAGAs to expect Trump to give them vengeance for Epstein's abuse of children. Trump has been promoting himself as vengeance incarnate. Now he is refusing to deliver on his promises. That is between him and his followers. We blues are not involved.
So, why is Somerby attempting to shift the blame over to us with this odd headline? We didn't do anything with or to Epstein.
Somerby asks: "Is it possible that we Blues have shown imperfect political judgment down through the many failed years?"
What "many failed years" is Somerby talking about? Biden only left office in 2024, less than 6 months ago. Before that, we had 4 manifestly successful years under Biden. Before Hillary lost to Trump in 2016, we had another 8 successful years under Obama. There were 8 not so good years under George W. Bush, but Bill Clinton served 8 years before him, ending with a balanced budget, a budget surplus, and peach in the world.
Nixon tried to cheat while president, but he got caught and his colleagues convinced him to resign instead of being impeached. Wise heads prevailed and he left office without being tried, in a plea deal with Gerald Ford. But Trump has no wisdom himself and his miniions have none, so there is no easy out, even though he has been caught in way more wrongdoing than Nixon. Why then does Somerby talk about listening to wise people? Who does Somerby have in mind?
Does Somerby even think about what he writes each day? Does he care if it makes sense or not. I don't think so.
We on the left do not follow the conspiracy theories listed. We are trying to protect the remains of science from the destructive forces in our govt. We are not the ones Somerby needs to chide.
Did I mention that Pam Bondi is a Scientologist? That should tell you everything you need to know about her wise thinking and who she listens to.
Now Somerby is calling Bondi's lie a "clumsy statement." Either she lied about the list on her desk or she is lying now to cover up the suppression of that list. This isn't some big old misunderstanding.
DeleteShe is continuing to cover up something for Trump. I don't know what it is, but I do know she wouldn't be backtracking on this except at Trump's direction. She is an attorney, after all. They don't make clumsy statements involving binders and influencers and then say it was all a big mistake.
Somerby's presentation of this issue makes him sound like a huge fool. I imagine his remarks are aimed at stray MAGAs and Trump supporters, but none of the turmoil in MAGAland can be attributed to Blue America. Trump and Somerby own this.
It's an exaggeration to say that Biden is a scientologist.
DeletePam Bondi has had ties to the Church of Scientology throughout her career, including accepting campaign contributions from Scientologists and attending fundraisers organized by prominent members of the church. She first connected with Scientologists in 2010 and has spoken at events related to issues like human trafficking and drug initiatives, emphasizing shared goals with the organization.

President Biden is a devoted practicing Catholic, Dickhead in Cal, you fucking fascist freak.
DeleteSorry for the typo. I meant to write, "It's an exaggeration to say that BONDI is a scientologist.
DeleteShe is a Scientologist. People don’t do that stuff unless they are.
DeletePam is wise by MAGA standards.
DeleteI think Somerby is chastising the Democrats for piling on to the controversy over the Epstein files, because Bondi just misspoke. Somerby is wrong to believe that most of the furor over this is coming from Democrats. It is also coming from the MAGA right, who are disappointed with Trump and disllusioned about what they believed him to be. Somerby offers no arguments for why he thinks we Democrats shouldn't join in and point out that Trump may be protecting himself, not just the other child abusers on Epstein's list. Some on the right are suggesting that Trump's timing is off and he has chosen a bad way to come clean with his base. No one thinks Bondi would issue a statement saying that there is no list unless Trump had told her to.
ReplyDeleteWhy now? I think Trump is trying to shut down the Epstein conspiracy now because Musk accused Trump of being named on the list. This was precipitated by Musk, who has had access to data across many agencies and parts of the government. Musk's DOGE team may have hacked or otherwise accessed whatever evidence exists on Epstein and then Musk was referring to it in public, which is a threat to Trump. Now Trump is trying to nullify that threatened public exposure.
