THINGS FALL APART: Governor Evers tweets from script!

TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2020

Traditional norms fall apart:
Sunday's police shooting incident produced some familiar reactions.

The shooting occurred in Kenosha, Wisconsin, late in the afternoon. Wisconsin's governor, Tony Evers, tweeted an instant reaction:
EVERS (8/23/20): Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries.
According to Evers, Jacob Blake had been shot in the back in broad daylight, at night. Sometimes, things can go that way when we offer instant reactions.

In fairness, Governor Evers had certain facts right. Blake had, in fact, been shot in the back, as many as seven times.

As of this morning, the actual number still wasn't known. On Sunday night, Evers continued as shown:
EVERS (continuing directly): While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.
In this second tweet in his chain, Governor Evers correctly said that neither he, nor anyone else, "ha[d] all the details yet."

In fact, Evers likely had very few "details" at that point. Presumably, he'd seen the (very short) videotape which shows the actual shooting.

In that second tweet, Evers said that he did know some things for certain. It's at this point that the governor's logic begins to sound rather strange, and norms begin falling apart. Indeed, the part of his tweet shown below can sound completely improper:
"What we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country."
Evers didn't know the details, but he did know who had been grievously wrong. He described the shooting as "merciless"—and as he did, he he made this extremely peculiar remark:
"[Jacob Blake] is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country."
Almost surely, that statement is accurate. Leaving the question of mercy aside, large number of men or persons "have been shot or injured or killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country" in recent years—for example, in the years since the Washington Post began keeping track of such incidents.

At its invaluable but almost wholly ignored Fatal Force site, the Post has recorded shooting deaths at the hands of police officers since the start of 2014—and it's certanly true:

Many men or persons have been shot and killed during those five-plus years. In the state of Wisconsin, the numbers look like this:
People shot and killed by police in Wisconsin, 2014 to present
White: 57
Black: 22
Hispanic: 6
Other race or ethnicity: 6
Quite a few men or persons have been shot and killed by police officers in the state of Wisconsin. Surely, some of those people were shot and killed "me5rcilessly," though Evers only seemed concerned with such events if the victims were men or persons who he deems to be black.

For the record, an even larger number of men or persons have been shot and killed nationwide. Since Evers referred to the national scene, those numbers look like this:
People shot and killed by police in the United States, 2014 to present
White: 2,527
Black: 1,318
Hispanic: 918
Other race or ethnicity: 218
Almost surely, some of those shooting deaths truly were "merciless." But here's where the strangeness comes in:

Judging from his actual words, Evers was concerned with black victims in all fifty states, but not with white or Hispanic victims in his own state of Wisconsin! We only report his statement that way because that's what he actually said.

Nor was Evers done. By now, he was tweeting directly from mandated script. Judged by traditional norms, we'd call his behavior appalling:
EVERS (continuing directly): We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith.

And we stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites.
Evers named some shooting victims, but he only named those who were black. He then closed this, the fourth tweet in his chain, with an astounding remark:
"We stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites."
Judging from Evers' remarkable statement, excessive use of force is OK when dealing with whites or Hispanics! We say this only because that's what the governor said.

Let's be clear. If you asked Evers the following question, his answer would likely be no:
Is it OK for a police officer to use excessive force against someone who's white or Hispanic?
We assume that he would say no. But when he sat and typed his storm, the mewling governor of the failing state of Wisconsin was typing directly from currently mandated script.

Working through those ugly tweets, one thinks of the famous remarks addressed to Wisconsin's Joseph McCarthy:
Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
We'll amend the words to suit this case:

At long last, has Evers no sense of responsibility? Or is he a pool boy to script?

There was a time, not long ago, when no one ever would have produced such a strange series of comments. In this case, Governor Evers was working from mandated script.

Evers knew what he had to type—and traditional norms crashed down, fell apart. Is there some imaginable way that conduct like this ends well?

Tomorrow: Three tries by the Washington Post

  3. "though Evers only seemed concerned with such events if the victims were men or persons who he deems to be black"

Somerby has no way of knowing what Evers cares about, and certainly no way of knowing whether it is true that he is only concerned about black people being shot. This is an unnecessary slur on Evers.

The shooting victim in this particular incident was black and thus it was appropriate for Evers to talk about black people being shot.

He convened the state legislature and asked them to consider a police reform bill. They are unlikely to do so, since the legislature is controlled by Republicans, but the bill itself does not concern only black shootings, but seeks to limit use of chokeholds and similar violence against suspects regardless of race or gender.

Somerby's current "all lives matter" theme is an affront to black people who are concerned about the disproportionate number of victims of police shootings who are black, including the person recently shot in Kenosha.

Black people are understandably concerned about their husbands, sons, fathers and brothers, who ARE more likely to be shot by police. Somerby's insistence that the racial aspect of such shootings be ignored in favor of a more universal concern, is unfair to those who are protesting these recent killings.

Somerby has no idea whether Evers is "working from mandated script" or expressing his sincere feelings and opinions. Many of us DO care about whether black people are being shot by police during encounters that white people would survive. It is not unreasonable to believe that Evers cares too.

It is clear, however, that Somerby does not care.

Which is why TDH used the word "seemed." But somehow you know every nuance of Somerby's feelings. Why doesn't your head just explode from cognitive dissonance?

Somerby's current "all lives matter" theme is an affront to black people....

I have it on good authority that black people just love it when well-meaning white ignoramuses tell everyone how black people think and feel. Let us know when you get a grateful message from BLM.

    2. How do you know what my race or ethnicity is? You are assuming a lot here deadrat.

Even if I were black, I wouldn't be speaking for all black people, but everyone knows that "all lives matter" is now a slogan of the support-the-police movement, which comes from the right (and is not simply a humanitarian all-souls-matter approach to life).

So, Somerby's embrace of all lives matter is an intentional affront to the BLM protests.

You cannot be arguing that Somerby has suddenly changed his dislike of identity politics, so you are just venting spleen again by lashing out at commenters -- making no friends and influencing no one.

Still waiting on that grateful note from BLM, eh? I see that you criticize my assumption about your race, but you give yourself a pass on your assumption about TDH's "intentions."

You cannot be arguing that Somerby has suddenly changed his dislike of identity politics,

Why would I argue that? His stance on police shootings is entirely consistent with his dislike of identity politics.

so you are just venting spleen again by lashing out at commenters

I am criticizing the mind reading, ignorance, and hypocrisy of Anonymous Ignoramuses. I note your refusal to rebut any of my arguments. Instead you just whine about how mean I am.

I don't comment to make friends, indeed I find the idea of cyberfriends, especially anonymous cyberfriends slightly odd.

I comment to amuse myself. History shows I haven't influenced any of the Anonymous Ignoramuses. But to be fair, that would be a fool's errand. How do you know I haven't influenced readers of this blog who can think straight?

The funny thing is that you actually have a point buried in your nonsense. I'll show you how to properly make that point in a bit. Look for a comment with the string "***" at the beginning.

  4. "Or is he a pool boy to script?"

I would bet that most pool boys are not boy toys for sale to wealthy pool patrons. I would be that most pool boys are not having affairs with the wives of hypocritical evangelist ministers. I would bet that most pool boys are doing a service job to earn money to support themselves and perhaps families. It is a legitimate job, much like being a server in a restaurant or hotel.

I would imagine that pool boys are heartily tired of jokes about them sleeping with bored wives.

But here we see Somerby's fatal flaw -- his tendency to generalize from a single instance to an entire category without any justification whatsoever, often based on negative characteristics that unfairly malign others on no basis.

And he thinks it is funny to do this. Or clever. It isn't. It is mean-spirited and stupid. What has a pool boy ever done to Somerby to deserve this? Nothing, since he has no wife. Pool boys are not fair game.

  6. Here is an example of an ugly statement:

"But when he sat and typed his storm, the mewling governor of the failing state of Wisconsin was typing directly from currently mandated script."

Mewling is what baby kittens do, not what governors do.

How is Wisconsin a "failing state" and why malign the state itself and all of its residents by using a word like "failing"?

Somerby sounds like Trump with these remarks. He sounds like our President, who considers himself only the president of the red states and calls all the blue states and cities disasters, hellholes, etc. Somerby uses the same overheated, untrue language about Wisconsin (which is by no means failing) as our moronic president, soley because the Democratic governor said something he disagrees with. Who talks like that (besides Trump)?

And then there is the matter of script. Where is that script published and who has mandated it (Q-Anon surely has an answer)? Why is everything someone says that Somerby disagrees with necessarily part of a liberal script? What script is Somerby reading (and writing) from? I suspect it is the he-man liberal-hater's script, straight from Republican central. The "tell" is that he calls Wisconsin a failing state, just like Dear Leader does. No one else calls a non-failing state failing, just out of meanness and spite.

    1. Wisconsin is a failing state due to the depredations of its previous, Republican governor, the Republican minority party that gerrymandered its way into the control of the legislature, and the obstructionist "conservative" minority on the state supreme court that's blocked the current Democratic governor from taking steps to control the pandemic.

Are you mind reading? Somerby didn’t explain why he thinks it’s a failed state.

The Wisconsin GOP didn’t do anything illegal. It’s up to the voters to vote them out if they disapprove.

But I imagine many Republicans approve, and don’t see their state as “failing.”

No, I wasn't mind reading TDH. I'm wasn't even addressing him; I was answering Jake Winkman's question.

The Wisconsin GOP didn't do anything illegal -- now that's simply adorable, but where did I say they did?

I imagine many Republicans do approve of the state of the state of Wisconsin. But why would any thinking person use Republicans' approval as a yardstick by which to measure fact? Republicans approve of putting illegal immigrants' children in cages -- see our Cecelia -- but that doesn't mean the practice isn't a human rights violation.

      Seriously, are you feeling OK?

  7. The Republican campaign is trying to convince voters that the country is in crisis, that there is danger all around and that they should be very afraid. Trump is trying to run on a law and order platform that emphasizes threats to policing and violent protests and assures voters that he will protect them.

Somerby's version of this is that things are falling apart around us, that cities are failing, and that liberals are letting all hell break loose while chasing PC culture and favoring blacks over everyone else.

Does Somerby sound like any liberal you've ever heard speak? No. He echoes the frightening language of the right. It could be that he is simply a tired, scared old man expressing his covid-related feeling that things are out of control, or it could be that he is foisting his version of Trump's message on us here, barely camouflaged as a leftist concern for our "systems", expecting that if voters can be scared enough, they'll vote for the status quo or Trump's version of authoritarianism.

Whatever Somerby hopes to achieve with his posts here, I know in my heart that he is no liberal, and I cannot feel sorry for him because he is such an asshole. He is wasting words when he should be talking about the merits of working together to pull Trump out of office and replace him with Joe Biden. Notice how Somerby never mentions Biden's name? That is a campaign tactic -- you never mention your opponent by name. That is the surest way to know where Somerby's sympathies lie. Hint: Not with Joe Biden.

Well, there's your problem. Try knowing things with your brain, although this may be impossible for you since your head is so far up your ass. In cases like yours, the anus often constricts the blood flow to the brain making coherent thought impossible.

Notice how Somerby never mentions Biden's name?

No, but I've noticed what an egregious ignoramus you are. TDH mentioned Biden's name yesterday in his blog entry titled “You’re no better than anybody else!"

In that entry, TDH quotes Gene Lyons quoting Biden quoting his father's "personal slogan" “You’re no better than anybody else. And nobody’s better than you.”

TDH asks, "Are we really supposed to say that we're 'no better than" them?' and answers that the "deeply wise answer is yes."

So there's another way to know where TDH's sympathies lie. Hint: try reading for comprehension.

    5. I never heard that saying in my entire Irish lifetime (so far). I haven't seen it embroidered on dish towels either, but it sounds about right for a greeting card. Or it could be an epigram, but it doesn't make a lot of sense in terms of logic and reason.

Anti-authoritarianism runs strong in Irish culture for historical reasons and perhaps by temperament. The second part, about no one better than you (probably originally phrased as no man better), is about standing up to authority, not sentiment about equality. It means don't act too big for your britches and don't let anyone push you around. That would be the proper Irish paraphrase, not kumbaya and Malala and Ghandish nonsense. Somerby should understand the Irish, deadrat probably not, if it isn't literal and spelled out for him.

    6. deadrat probably not, if it isn't literal and spelled out for him.

Oh, dear. A drive-by swipe from an Irishman trying to school me on the Irish:

Anti-authoritarianism runs strong in Irish culture....

This what I'd call caic tarbh in the old tongue. If I were Irish, that is. Somehow this "anti-authoritarianism" of the Irish never slowed their enthusiasm for joining the police forces of Boston and New York, and it never dimmed their affection for that most-authoritarian of religious sects, the Catholic Church.

What runs strong in Irish culture is anti-English sentiment, and to be fair the English inflicted their authority on Ireland for centuries. So thanks for your assessment of a saying you've never heard before, but if you don't mind, I'll not be paying much attention to an interpretation from an Anonymous Ignoramus.

If you don't like to be told what to do, it is better to be the boss. You left out politics -- the Irish ran the large cities in the east and midwest, for better or worse.

The Catholic Church in Ireland invented the soup kitchen during the potato famine. The church was the source of relief, if you were in good graces with it. It was key to social and financial support because there was not a clear division between secular and religious life, as there is now. How many Irish were priests? A disproportionate number, because if you are going to be told what to do, it is better to do the telling.

Just as the latest newspaper article that Somerby critiques is the worst article ever written, so Evers’ comments are the strangest thing that anyone has ever said in the history of people saying things.

But that is such a strange thing to say, that I nominate Somerby’s “no one ever would have produced such a strange series of comments” as the strangest thing that anyone has ever said in the history of people saying things.

At any rate, Evers’ comments can’t be both “strange” and yet part of a familiar, mandated script.

Is Somerby accusing Evers of saying this just because, as a liberal, he is expected to say it? Is Somerby trying to imply that Evers doesn’t actually believe it?

    Who knows.

But in a state that is as politically polarized as Wisconsin, where Evers won the governorship with approximately a 1% margin, and where the Dems are well in the minority in the state house, it was hardly the politically expedient thing for him to say.

Perhaps that testifies to sincerity on his part.

      I can see two possibilities:

      1. they are not planning to win this one. It would also explain why they've chosen Rapist Joe. Or

      2. they are convinced (based on their modeling/data analysis) that they're losing because of the passivity of their rank-and-file dimwits, who are beginning to realize they're being had. And then this is a desperate attempt to agitate the dimwits, for the election. Seems kinda risky, though. We'll see; it's gonna be fun.

(Asterisks as promised for my Anonymous "friend.")

TDH is off base here. He quotes WaPo's "Fatal Force" site saying that the cops have shot and killed 91 people since 2014. That includes 22 black people, or about a quarter of the total. But Wisconsin's black citizens make up less than 7% of the state's population. If race weren't a factor in police shootings, we'd expect only 6 black people on that doleful list.

Ignoring this is odd for someone who's big on normalizing statistics to population size. Could there be other explanations for the racial pattern? Sure, but it's hardly irrational to conclude that there might be two problems here -- police employing excessive violence in general and police disproportionately employing excessive violence against black people.

If the statistics have misled the governor, then the corrective is an explanation, not calling him a slave to script.

Of course, he's offering a corrective: get off the script. In this case, stop automatically adopting an identity-based view (police kill too many black citizens without cause) and adopt an inclusive view (police kill too many citizens without cause).

He wants to call liberals “slaves to script.” Over and over. That is his whole purpose.

    4. Deadrat
Thank you for using the numbers to counter bobs really lame article.
He did the same thing with the Covid death counts.
Using average, mean, per capita and percentage all to
      Comfuse.
      Same here.
I have been reading bob since 9/11 I did learn a lot from him but he seems to be slipping rightward along with the rest of
      His Boston working class heroes.
He glosses over their tribalism and holds liberals to some higher standard.
At first it seemed that he wanted his side to rise above
However lately it just seems like
      He has just became conservative.

    5. The numbers are important, but worse is the reason why those killings happened. Cops kill blacks due to racism, cops kill whites because they are dangerous.

  12. IMO there has been a trend to turn many traditional beliefs 180 degrees. E.g.,

-- Gays and blacks used to be considered bad. Now they're better than straights and whites.

-- Achievement used to be good. Now, it's better to be a victim.

-- Religion used to be good. Now it's bad.

-- Free speech used to be good. Now it's bad.

-- Marijuana used to be bad. Now it's good.

    Following this trend, we have

-- Rioters and looters used to be bad. Now they're good.

    1. You have got it about right (except for the "now...better" parts).

For you it seems like these notions are a loss, for society, it is progress. Your life is better now, you can have a tantrum or you can enjoy the progress.

Big deal. How does this effect people who insist "white privilege" isn't real?

    3. David, you idiot, marijuana has never been bad. That’s just plain wrong. God gave us those flowers. Is alcohol bad? I’m guessing not, since you must have been drunk when you posted that drivel.

I’m thinking you watched the RNC convention on loop, then took all of their talking points and laid out your synopsis. Well done! Brief, to the point, and confirming what is already known.*

Genetics seem to play a role in how people evolve within their lifetimes, and this necessarily includes their political leanings. Of course, one cannot discount environmental factors in our development. That’s precisely where your good-bad argument gets you; because it’s either good or bad, there’s no nuance in your “arguments.”

Be that as it may, somehow, your free speech was bad. Do you feel oppressed now? Do tell.

      *You’re dumb.

I am so happy to share this fantastic testimony of mine. My life has changed round completely in 48hours. I can see myself in the mirror and smile. I have confidence in myself and my abilities for the first time in ages. I have my boyfriend back in my life with the help of Dr Isikolo. He said sorry a 48 hours after the spell was created. He said he realised that he never really wanted to break up he could not handle emotional baggage I was carrying around all the time. He said that he thought he was the negative influence on my life and thought it best to leave. He said it was hard that I kept talking about the past all the time. We have both forgiven each other. I have money in my pocket that is my own at last. My compensation cheque came through I was told it was months away. I am living proof of what Dr Isikolo can do. I thank you so much Dr Isikolo for the wonderful thing you did in my relationship. I am so happy now. With your help we were both able to see and speak the truth to each other. 19. After being in relationship with Wilson for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that don’t believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I meant a spell caster called Dr Zuma zuk and I email him, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. Anybody could need the help of the spell caster, his email: spiritualherbalisthealing@gmail.com or WhatsApp him +15068001647
