THINGS FALL APART: "Goodbye, Wisconsin," top experts now say!

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2020

Concerned by the fires this time:
Who will win Wisconsin this fall?

We have no way of knowing. Back in 2016, Wisconsin was one of the three states which swung to Candidate Trump by very small margins. This let him win the Electoral College and move on to the White House.

He did so despite losing the nationwide popular vote to Candidate Clinton by 2.9 million votes and 2.1 percentage points. Is it possible that some such disaster could occur again?

By most reckonings, Candidate Biden will need to win Wisconsin this fall. But several top experts are now saying that Biden's chances in the state may be fading this week.

"Goodbye, Wisconsin," several of these experts now warn. They refer to the recent shooting in Kenosha, and to its grim aftermath.

More specifically, they refer to the way those events are being presented to the nation's warring red and blue tribes.

For those who belong to our own blue tribe, we will, once again, make a peculiar suggestion. If you want a fuller picture of the events in question, we hope you've been watching the overwrought Fox News Channel program, Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Warning! If you watched this program the last two nights, you had to sit through Carlson's massive sense of grievance. You had to tolerate all sorts of wild, overstated claims, whether from Carlson or from some of his guests. There were some flat misstatements.

That said, there was also an upside. If you were willing to tolerate the less desirable aspects of this program, you were able to see the way events in Kenosha, and beyond, are being presented to the largest audience in cable news.

Also, there was this:

You were able to see the types of videotape, and learn the types of facts, which are generally being withheld from our tribe at the failing tribal news orgs we have long thought we could trust.

In other words, you can actually learn some things if you can just tolerate Carlson! And make no mistake:

According to several major experts, Candidate Biden may be losing Wisconsin this week. According to experts, this involves the types of events our own blue tribe are being shielded from.

What are these experts talking about? Let's start with the Sunday shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha police officer.

The shooting of Jacob Blake:

In yesterday's report,
we reviewed a remarkable set of Sunday night tweets by Wisconsin governor Tony Evers. Even as he noted that "details" of the shooting incident were still unknown, Evers seemed to condemn the action, seeming to say that police conduct had been "merciless" and racially motivated.

Some of those details are now known, but major news orgs of our blue tribe are keeping them under wraps. One such detail was reported by the Associated Press:
ASSOCIATED PRESS (8/25/20): Online court records indicate Kenosha County prosecutors charged Blake on July 6 with sexual assault, trespassing and disorderly conduct in connection with domestic abuse. An arrest warrant was issued the following day. The records contain no further details and do not list an attorney for Blake.

It was unclear whether that case had anything to do with the shooting.
Did that warrant play a role in Sunday's shooting incident? We have no way of knowing. But at least one Wisconsin news org has reported that police were attempting to arrest Blake on that warrant when the altercation which led to the shooting began.

Was Blake resisting arrest when the shooting occurred? We can't tell you that either! That said, additional video footage now shows a physical fight between police and Blake before Blake broke away from police and tried to enter his vehicle.

Presumably, this footage increases the likelihood that Blake was violently resisting arrest at the time of the shooting incident.

We don't know if police had attempted to arrest Blake, but the existence of the warrant is a reported fact. And while we're at it, the Associated Press has also reported this:
ASSOCIATED PRESS: The man who said he made the [original] cellphone video, 22-year-old Raysean White, said he saw Blake scuffling with three officers and heard them yell, “Drop the knife! Drop the knife!” before the gunfire erupted. He said he didn’t see a knife in Blake’s hands.

The governor said he had seen no information to suggest Blake had a knife or other weapon, but that the case is still being investigated by the state Justice Department.
Was a knife involved in this "scuffle?" We have no idea—and sensible people try to do what Governor Evers didn't. Sensible people try to withhold judgment about serious matters like this when so few basic facts are known.

That said, the arrest warrant and the physical fight are now matters of record. Unless you read the news reports in today's New York Times and Washington Post.

These news reports fail to report the existence of the warrant or the videotape of the fight with police, even as they quote pedestrians, bystanders and various local philosophers offering their speculations about what surely must have occurred and who was right and wrong.

Of course, resisting arrest is not a capital crime. If it were, the penalty would be imposed by a court, not by police officers on the scene.

That said, red voters are being told about Blake's fight with police, and about his apparent 2015 arrest for threatening people with a gun. The blue tribe is being encouraged not to hear about such matters—and red voters are being told about this selective reporting.

Rioting, looting, arson, assault:

According to our leading experts, it's the subsequent rioting, looting and arson which are most likely to cost Biden the state of Wisconsin. If you've watched Carlson's program the past two nights, you've seen extensive video footage of this gruesome conduct.

Last night, that included ugly footage of a physical attack on a 71-year-old man attempting to protect his store from arson.
Our own "blue tribe" news orgs have been disinclined to worry our heads about such matters. Experts say that these "protests"—downplayed by liberals, reported by conservatives—have a fair-to-middlin' chance of costing Biden the state.

Other videotaped misconduct:

These experts point to another part of last night's Tucker Carlson program which could cost Biden dearly. They refer to a segment in which Carlson interviewed Matt Walsh about harassment of people in Washington restaurants as they try to eat lunch.

The harassment is conducted by anti-racism warriors, black and white together. By normal societal standards, the conduct is stupid and ugly.

You can watch the segment in question here, though it was beeped and bowdlerized and rather poorly explained. For an unvarnished example of what we're talking about, we'll suggest that you just click this. But also, just click here.

Why did a Kenosha police officer shoot Jacob Blake on Sunday? We can't tell you that.

Was the conduct justified? Did the officer think or know that Blake was armed with a knife?

Was Blake armed with a knife? Was Blake resisting or fleeing from arrest? Did the officer think that Blake was reaching into his car for a weapon?

We can't answer those blindingly obvious questions. We can tell you this:

All reporting of all such incidents is now heavily propagandized. Members of our warring tribes are told and shown vastly different things.

It seems to us that it's our tribe which is often kept in the dark about these matters. But at any rate, the warring tribes are being taken down two different roads.

In our view, intelligent liberals should swallow hard and watch Carlson's program. Remember—you're watching for the videotape, not for the overwrought guff.

Concerning all these events, we can only tell you this:

Traditional systems have fallen apart as such events have been reported in recent years. A great deal more remains to be said about this very large problem.

At any rate, as our systems continue to fail, several major qualified experts are now saying, "Goodbye, Wisconsin." As Kenosha burns to the ground, so perhaps do Candidate Biden's chances—or so these top experts have said.

The propaganda is general within our blue tribe's major "news sources." As these systems fall apart, a famous experiment fails.

Tomorrow: LeBron's (important) concern

For an assertion this important, it would be nice if Somerby would quote some specific experts, tell us who those experts are.

Today's poll at 538 shows Biden +5 (Change Research). Yesterday Trafalgar group showed Trump +1, but on Aug 21, Redfield & Wilton Strategies and Civics had Biden up by +10 and +6 respectively. Past polls show Biden consistently up by 5 to 13 points.

It may be that the rioting in Kenosha is affecting polls, but you cannot prove it by 538's summary of the polling.

So, who exactly are these experts, and are they perhaps appearing on Fox News?

Fox viewers will only vote Republican, it is of no consequence how things are covered on Fox.

Previous crimes do not justify cops murdering someone. Cops routinely try to instigate some level of resistance, and then exclaim there is a weapon, as they know this will alleviate liability even if no weapon is found.

Of course they don't, dear dembot.

Previous crimes, however, most certainly indicate that cops were probably justified in shooting the criminal.

If the experts living inside your head are correct, dear Bob, then the next question is: why do your cult leaders are pursuing this course?

Y'know: rots and race-war incitement, hate-mongering in virtually all directions, most strikingly towards the country itself, and a majority of its population.

  3. Somerby says: "You were able to see the types of videotape, and learn the types of facts, which are generally being withheld from our tribe at the failing tribal news orgs we have long thought we could trust.

In other words, you can actually learn some things if you can just tolerate Carlson!"

What do you learn on Fox News? According to Somerby's list, you learn the kinds of things that Fox viewers are being subjected to.

That is a pretty lame claim. If you watch Fox you will see what others who watch Fox at the same time are seeing, Somerby promises.

He does call some of the content on Fox News "facts" but how does he know which are facts and which are lies or manipulations of video (deep fakes) or misleading graphs, or simply mistakes? And is propaganda really factual? I don't think so.

But Somerby thinks we should be watching this shit, just because Fox has the biggest cable news audience. Most of the young people I know don't watch any cable news at all. They get their news from the internet or from podcasts or The Daily Show, Colbert and other liberal late-night hosts. They mostly don't watch TV. It is old farts like Somerby who are watching Fox.

Is Fox telling its audience that Trump is trying to cut social security and medicare, as he tries to eliminate the payroll tax? Is Fox telling its audience that if it doesn't wear masks, it will be more likely to catch covid, and is it telling them that the older you are, the higher the mortality rate for those who do catch it? Is Fox telling its viewers that the fatter you are, the worse your symptoms will be, and the greater your risk of death from covid? Or are these perhaps facts you will only hear if you watch a less conservative, less Trump-loving cable news show?

"Is Fox telling its audience that if it doesn't wear masks, it will be more likely to catch covid"

Dear dembot, it'll (no doubt) shock you, but, to quote the Dutch equivalent of the surgeon general, "from a medical point of view, there is no evidence of a medical effect of wearing face masks". And, in fact, wearing face masks could be harmful, as "masks could cause people not to adhere to social distancing as well as they have been".

Also, wearing your mask over your eyes while driving is harmful.

  4. "You were able to see the types of videotape, and learn the types of facts, which are generally being withheld from our tribe at the failing tribal news orgs we have long thought we could trust."

At liberal websites, I have been seeing video of the guy who shot several people in Kenosha with the blessing of the police. There is video of police officer telling the armed white male how happy he was to have the "help" of the armed counter-protesters. Later the same man walks away from the scene of the shooting with a long-gun clearly in his hand, while police make no attempt whatsoever to apprehend him.

Today, I also read that the Portland police are still tolerating the attacks by alt-right white supremacists on BLM protesters, resulting in rioting as protesters try to defend themselves, after which the police arrest the protesters and let the white supremacists go, even with their guns and other weapons in plain sight.

Are police being portrayed as complicit with alt-right white gun-carrying rioters? If they are not, then Fox News isn't presenting all that is going on. If they are focusing on mainly showing looting and spray painting by supposed antifa, then they are presenting propaganda intended to portray the protesters as violent and deserving of attack, which may be leading to increased violence against those exercising their free speech rights.

No thank you, I will not watch Fox, even to see what Somerby thinks he sees of value over there. I have no doubt that Trump supporters are being brainwashed and gaslighted, because that's what Fox does. I don't need to expose myself to filth that will make my blood pressure increase, just to understand that there is another side that doesn't believe what I do.

Unless Somerby is arguing that we need a controlled source of verified info that ALL are required to watch, a la 1984, the price we pay for free speech is stations like Fox, and if their distortions appeal to a segment of the population, they have the right to their views and to vote however they wish. But I don't have to watch their preferred demagogue in order to be an informed voter myself. There is no value in doing that.

Is there any clearer indication that They have gotten to Somerby, than his urging his readership to visit Fox?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Somerby conveniently doesn't mention that Blake was shot in the back, in front of three children who were in the car. Maybe they didn't tell him that on Fox.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Who do I think knows more about this incident, Gov Evers or Tucker Carlson on Fox? I will go with the Governor.

Somerby tries to invent possibilities and unknowns that might justify the shooting, working very hard at it, but those are suppositions, not facts. The fact is that another unarmed black man was shot by police. There are specific circumstances in all of these situations, but taken collectively, they add up to a pattern of police violence that is different than that for white men and persons.

Somerby welcomes statistics when he wants to talk about the failures of black children, but he mines the specifics of police-involved killings for exonerating details, when it comes to police violence -- anything to discredit the need for protests. He pretends he is on a search for truth, but this is what a white bigot does when he doesn't want to face facts about police abuse of power. Somerby is part of the reason people are protesting, because he is supporting the power structure with this fact-hunt, and so is Tucker Carlson.

Traditional systems also includes the 2nd Amendment. Unfortunately, through massive lobbying, we have more privately-held guns per capita than any other nation. That makes me kinda nervous.

If I were a cop, patrolling traditional systems, I would also be on edge, since those systems require “broken-window” patrolling by police, where the poorest of the poor live in this country. A tradition. And they hate cops for some reason.

Yeah, I’d be nervous. As far as Blake, an evolving story, perhaps the officers’ behavior was warranted, in every sense of the word.

Bob makes good points, but deadrat held him to account. Somerby is fine with stats relative to population, but he abandoned that, even with Covid, though I suppose it was relevant to the timeline of its spread. But he never even mentions the disparity between relative shootings of blacks v. whites. C’mon Bob, don’t be that way.

And Carlson? Don’t be a dick. I won’t even feign interest in trying to find your nugget.

I do not get nervous being in the poorest of poor neighborhoods - news to bigots: they are not filled with crazed serial killer terrorists. Cops are hated in those neighborhoods because they constantly harass the people that live there and do nothing to help; however, being a cop is not even in the top ten of most dangerous jobs, there are over 700k cops, only about 100 die every year on the job, while cops kill over a thousand and put over 50k in the hospital each year.

    3. Los Angeles, the largest liberal metropolitan area in the US, is safer than most large red state cities, both for the public and for the police. Red states have more violence, more domestic violence (cops have the highest rate of domestic violence), more STDs, more divorce, more teenage pregnancy, more drug use, more child abuse, more pedophilia, more property crimes, on and on. Furthermore, red states produce less revenues and take in more federal funds than blue states, so liberal states fund conservative states, while in conservative states men hire pool boys to fuck their wives.

The rioting and the police misconduct are taking place in Democratic run cities and states. By under-reporting the rioting, the media help the Dems to cover up what's happening.

    2. David, this article is about Evers, who is a Democratic Governor in a Republican-run state, with a previous Republican Governor. He took office in Jan, 2019, which doesn't give him much time to turn Wisconsin into a Democratic hellhole.

We had BLM protests in my small town, which is Republican by nearly 2-1. There have been BLM protests all over the country, including in red states and red cities.

I do agree that the rioting is being provoked by alt-right and white supremacist groups, which tend to be Republican if they are not secessionists. By under-reporting their participation, the media help the Right portray BLM protesters as looters and rioters, but most folks on the ground can tell the difference I think.

  9. "As Kenosha burns to the ground, so perhaps do Candidate Biden's chances—or so these top experts have said."

If every resident of Kenosha voted against Biden, it wouldn't even hurt his chances in Wisconsin.

According to Pew, 67% of Americans support BLM. Whether they believe protesters are rioters/looters depends on whether they are Republican or Democrat (e.g., watch Fox or not). This study shows what %s believe others are taking advantage of the protests in order to loot or riot for their own reasons:

    https://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2020/06/12/amid-protests-majorities-across-racial-and-ethnic-groups-express-support-for-the-black-lives-matter-movement/

Those figures are from June 12, but since then, the right has been attempting to discredit BLM by infiltrating protests and attacking protesters, while simultaneously conducting a propaganda campaign against them, which Somerby helpfully describes today.

538 says that support for BLM among whites is waning, but its graph shows only a few percentage points of decrease from its highest point, right after Floyd's death. I would call it holding steady, especially in the light of the ongoing assault against the movement, being waged in the media and on the ground via white supremacist and alt-right groups combined with police/federal agent assaults.

    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/support-for-black-lives-matter-surged-during-protests-but-is-waning-among-white-americans/

Neither of these surveys supports what Somerby is saying, that the protests may decrease Biden's chances or help Trump. I believe that the assaults on protesters are increasing sympathy for BLM, but you won't learn about those assaults on Fox or from Somerby, since their goal is to portray the protesters as aggressors not peaceful marchers, just as they attempt to show the victims of police shootings as dangerous black men who did something wrong that led to them being killed (more frequently, adjusted by their share of the population, than dangerous white men doing wrong things).

You perhaps have a different understanding of the word "substantial" than I do.

Also, Trump may approve of Melania and the other Eastern European models he imported for his "agency" but I doubt he approves of any other immigrants. He has been enacting measures to limit legal immigration, not just asylum seekers.

When you say stuff like this, you need to back it up with some evidence or readers are just going to ignore you. For example, how on earth could someone possibly know whether it was an unapproved medicine that saved his life or whether he would have improved without it?

  11. Trump promised 4 years ago to end the American “carnage.” These riots are happening under Trump’s watch, yet he isn’t being held to account for his promise.

Instead, Democrats are being blamed for the riots by the likes of Carlson and even those in the mainstream media (the infamous B. Williams did it last night), and the rioters are routinely conflated with BLM protesters.

Meanwhile, Democrats, such as Gov Evers, denounce the violence:

“The ability to exercise First Amendment rights is a critically important part of our democracy and the pursuit of justice. But there remains a line between peaceful assembly and what we saw last night that put individuals, families, and businesses in danger.”

But that won’t stop Carlson from spewing his propaganda, or Republicans from believing it.

    5. David, the violence is almost entirely being committed by the police and by alt-right militias who are there specifically to incite violence. Property damage and looting are being done by kids and opportunists, not protesters. The cause of the ongoing violence is Donald Trump.

    6. But 'alt-right' have wholeheartedly endorsed Rapist Joe, dear dembot.

Doesn't it make Rapist Joe and your zombie cult "the cause of the ongoing violence"?

  12. From Rawstory:

"An Illinois teenager has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a demonstrator in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, of Antioch, was charged Wednesday with first-degree intentional homicide in a shooting late Tuesday during a clash between protesters of police brutality and right-wing militia group members.

The militia members had gathered to protect a gas station from looters and vandals, and video shows police offer Rittenhouse water shortly before the shooting and thank him for being there.

Another video shows Rittenhouse open fire with a rifle after he fell to the ground and then calmly walk toward police vehicles with his hands raised in surrender.

However, no officers are seen getting out of the vehicles, which continue advancing toward protesters, to apprehend Rittenhouse — who then fled the state and was considered a fugitive.

He was arrested later Wednesday back in his hometown."

I'll bet this wasn't reported by Tucker Carlson.

    1. Saw the video, Rittenhouse was being attacked by armed protestors when he was on the ground. That was when he opened fire. Looked like self defense to me.

    2. He's being charged with murder.

From BGOnTheScene, who took the video:

"A crowd chases a suspected shooter down in Kenosha. He trips and falls, then turns with the gun and fires several times. Shots can be heard fired elsewhere as well, corroborating reports of multiple shooters tonight #Kenosha #KenoshaRiots"

After tripping, he sits up and turns his gun on those around him, shooting multiple people. None of them were in the process of attacking him or anywhere close to him (most were 10 ft away or more). It was intentional and it was not done to prevent imminent attack threatening life or serious injury, as required by self-defense law.

From the dark images in the video, you cannot tell whether any of the other running figures have weapons or not. You cannot tell whether they are chasing him or running with him as part of his own group. Only the text of the tweet says he was being chased. It isn't obvious from the video itself. At one point, it looked like someone tried to grab the gun from him. That isn't when he shoots or falls, that comes later.

"In another video recorded, a teen who appears to be Rittenhouse is seen walking away from an injured protester on the ground, talking on a cellphone.

As he jogs away, the audio includes screaming and a voice says "I just killed someone." "

    3. Looks like he was running toward the police after his first shooting at the car dealership, where he shot the guy in the head. This is the one he's being charged for, apparently.

    4. 2:06 + 2:33 sound like a hung jury. No conviction, then.

    5. Here is what David Neiwert adds to this account, from Daily Kos:

"A militia group calling itself the Kenosha Guard had organized on Facebook, ostensibly to prevent violence at the protests. On Monday, it had published a post calling for “Armed Citizens to Protect Our Lives and Property,” with text reading: “Any patriots willing to take up arms and defend our city tonight from the evil thugs? No doubt they are currently planning on the next part of the city to burn tonight.”

After the shooting, the Facebook page featured a post reading: “We are unaware if the armed citizen was answering the Kenosha Guard Militia’s call to arms. Just like the shooting of Jacob Blake, we need all the facts and evidence to come out before we make a judgement.” The Kenosha Guard’s Facebook page was subsequently taken down.

Rittenhouse was captured in video taken earlier in the evening in which he and several militiamen appeared to be getting water bottles handed to them by Kenosha police. In that video, he says: “By the way, I’m Kyle.”

Several antifascist social media accounts identified the man as Rittenhouse, noting that he has a history of associations with police, including enrolling in a local “police cadet” program. Rittenhouse’s Facebook was also festooned with “Blue Lives Matter” material and logos.

On Monday, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth had publicly refused to deputize citizens to patrol the city’s streets. After the shootings Tuesday, he reiterated that position.

“I’ve had people saying, ‘Why don’t you deputize citizens?’” he said. “This is why you don’t deputize citizens with guns to protect Kenosha.”

    6. 2:06 is why we can't have nice things. Rittenhouse had just shot someone in the head and some very brave protestors were trying to detain him from shooting more people.

  13. Tucker Carlson, Bob?

Just ask why we're not talking about black on black crime, and get it over with.

  14. You don’t have to trust Carlson.

Here’s a link to two of the dimmest bulbs in show business, but even they understand that the footage can’t be completely suppressed.

    2. Lemon did reference polling and focus group data.

I didn’t check it out, did you?

My reply was to the Anonymouse dismissing Somerby because of his reference to Tucker Carlson.

    3. When you cite something, please give the minute marker in the video. I don't want to watch an entire video to find a minute of two of talk. If there is a poll, cite the poll, not Lemon.

And you never did mention what exactly you were contesting above or what the point was.

I don't have to trust Carlson about what?

    4. I twice stated my point and referenced it to the Anonymouse’s post.

That video is less than four minutes.

It’s not my fault that you’re obtuse.

    5. Cecelia no one knows what point you are making. You language skills hover around the same level as Melanoma's.

Did you also think anyone cares? Bwahahahahaaha

Why are all Republicans so delusional?

  15. Why was Melania wearing such a military outfit? Her dress is army blanket brown and has epaulets and stuffed shoulders. Thought went into selecting her clothes, so what was she trying to say with it?

    1. I was so disappointed in her drab outfit.

I think she does communicate her feelings via her attire. Perhaps she’s suggesting that she’s on a battlefield.

    2. That seems likely. People like to believe she is a hostage, but from what I've read, she agrees with Trump and is behind him 100%. It conveys strength not fragility and certainly not femininity. I think she, not Kimberly Guilfoyle, should have worn the traditional Republican red dress (evoking Nancy Reagan). Maybe she doesn't know about Nancy Reagan, since that would have been well before her time.

    3. I don't think people respond that way. I think they just wonder why she's wearing such an ugly dress.

  16. Dear Bob, what about this guy, Anthony Brian Logan, analyzing a FoxNews show. Take a look here:
    https://youtu.be/rUz_EOACpNU

What did he say there: moron-ism that may sound appealing to other morons? Not bad, not bad.

I do object, however, to his (and others) labeling race-war liberal-hitlerian enthusiasts as "left". They are, in fact, typical far-right reactionaries, if you think about it for a second.

  18. David, please tell us about Trumps right to try law.
Do you know it's virtually useless. Did you know the FDA routinely approves 95% of all requests already. Did you know the woman who claimed it saved her life is a liar.
You are either a fool or a liar yourself.
