THROUGH A GLASS EXTREMELY DARKLY: The New York Times and the moral philosopher!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2020

When professors and press interact: According to an ancient text, we humans see through a glass darkly.

(We refer to Corinthians 13:12, not to the Bergman film.)

In a fashion which can almost seem humorous, we tend to do so very darkly when professors and press interact. Consider what happened last Saturday morning.

The pairing was a natural. A moral philosopher had chosen to speak about a significant current event. At the same time, the New York Times had a brand to advance.

Even better, the professor in question was offering a "human interest" hook. Is there any better way for professor and press to collude?

The setting was perfect for interaction. Perhaps in a slightly humorous way, the column started like this:

MUDD (10/10/20): The other day, my 7-year-old, having gotten wind of President Trump’s Covid-19 diagnosis, asked me point blank, “Mommy, are you glad that Trump got the coronavirus?”

I am a moral philosopher, and yet I had a hard time coming up with an answer. The question demands we grapple not only with the moral meaning of the president’s illness but also with our complex and contested reactions to it.

A 7-year-old had approached a moral philosopher with a perfectly decent question. And sure enough:

Initially, the philosopher had been stumped!

For the record, one can imagine different answers to this child's decent question.

The headline on this column reads, "What Moral Philosophy Tells Us About Our Reactions to Trump’s Illness." That headline may seem to suggest that there's some sure thing this branch of philosophy "tells us" about the situation at hand.

Presumably, that isn't the case. Presumably, different moral philosophers could assess that question in substantially different ways.

There may be more than one possible answer! For what it's worth, the moral philosopher so confronted continued her column as shown:

MUDD (continuing directly): To be clear, I am not debating whether it is morally wrong to wish for the president’s death. It is wrong. Full stop. Nevertheless, now that Mr. Trump has been declared healthy enough to return to work, I think it is important that we assess the moral significance of the positive reactions his run-in with Covid-19 has produced.

As a general matter, we would agree that it's wrong to wish for someone's death. For the record, that isn't the question the philosopher had been asked.

Let's make this a bit more tangy. If someone thinks that Donald J. Trump is causing other people's deaths, would it obviously be morally wrong for that person to wish for his death?

If you're speaking to a 7-year-old child, it seems to us that the obvious answer would be yes. For ourselves, we've long expressed two views about the commander in chief:

We've suggested that he seems to be some serious version of mentally ill. Also, we've suggested that this unfortunate fact should be regarded with pity.

At any rate, Professor Mudd said it's morally wrong to wish for the president's death. From there, she ruminated at length, wondering whether "those who rejoice in Mr. Trump’s misfortune [can] claim the moral high ground."

As we continued reading, it seemed to us that she gave the standard philosophical answer. We heard it described, tongue in cheek, by an instructor (and friend) during our college days:

QUESTION: Would it be morally wrong to wish for someone's death?

ANSWER: In a sense, but not as such.

Eventually, Professor Mudd described what she actually said to the child. Her answer had gone like this:

MUDD: Here’s how I explained the moral quandary to my 7-year-old: I am sad that Mr. Trump got sick because in general suffering is bad, and I don’t want anyone to suffer, but on the other hand I think he should suffer consequences for the harm he has done. This answer seemed satisfying enough at the time, but it left out an important distinction.

In the end, as it turns out, Mudd wants Trump to go to jail. So it can go,  in the New York Times, when professors and press interact.

Does moral philosophy really "tell us" that Trump should go to jail? In the Hamptons-based realm of the New York Times, that formulation may seem to make some sort of "philosophical" sense.

For ourselves, we saw nothing in Saturday's column which seemed to derive from anything resembling "philosophical" insight or expertise. We decided to see what the professor's focus as an academic may be.

According to the Times' identity line, the professor is currently an assistant professor of philosophy at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Previously, she'd served as a Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Southampton. At that previous post, we found this account of her academic work:

Research interests

Sasha's primary research interest is in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and its legacy, especially the problem of normativity and naturalism in the post-Kantian tradition. Within Kant's work, Sasha has focused on the relationship of practical to theoretical reason, Kant's so called "unity of reason" thesis, and Kant's attempts to ground fundamental normative conclusions in his account of agency. She also explores Kantian approaches to contemporary topics: including the nature of practical reason, and the possibility of a unified account of normativity. Her wider research interests include the Philosophy of History, the Philosophy of Psychoanalysis, and various issues at the interface of the Philosophy of Mind and Action, especially concerning the emotions. She believes that appropriating and developing the thought of eighteenth and nineteenth century philosophers is one of the best ways of gaining insight into contemporary philosophical problems.

As a British Academy Newton Advanced Fellow, Sasha co-directs with Dr. Lucas Thorpe (Bogazici University) a project entitled: "Agency and Autonomy: Kant and the Normative Foundations of Republican Self-Government." The project investigates Kant's contributes to republican political philosophy in light of his understanding of autonomy and human agency.

The professor is exploring the problem of normativity and naturalism in the post-Kantian tradition.  She's interested in the possibility of a unified account of normativity.

Let us offer a guess:

No one reading last Saturday's Times would have had any real idea what that salad might mean. Nor is it obvious that anyone should know any such thing.

Is there any possibility—any chance at all—that any such research will ever shed light on any actual moral question which might actually arise in the actual everyday world?

More specifically, is there any chance the this professor's work, and that of her colleagues, has any connection to the world in which an apparently disordered person has been traipsing about the countryside, making the crazy statements of an apparently disordered person for the past several years?

We're prepared to suggest that the research described in that account will never help us assess the moral dimensions of the situation at hand. The professor wants to see Trump in jail. But so does every one of our reigning "cable news" hosts!

At any rate, when a 7-year-old child asked a very good question, the philosopher was briefly stumped. She then offered an answer, about which she had second thoughts.

Is there anything anyone can actually learn from ruminations about the problem of normativity and naturalism in the post-Kantian tradition?

Our initial guess would be no. A second observation would be this:

The New York Times frequently produces moments like this. At such moments, it can appear that our most foppish upper-class newspaper is exploring the deep thoughts of our "philosophers," who are drawing on the western world's greatest intellectual traditions.

Such presentations reinforce this upper-end newspaper's brand. Slightly more gullible subscribers may be not question this ruse.

In our view, last Saturday's intersection between professor and press was perhaps highly Potemkin. We saw no particular "philosophical" insight at all.

Are there any "Kantian approaches to contemporary topics" which could be of any real service? Again, we'll strongly suggest the possibility that the answer is no.

More widely, how often have press and professors joined hands to give us real instruction? As we read the account of this philosopher's work, we thought of a question we asked long ago:

Moral philosophers to the side, where the Sam Hill  are the nation's logicians? Where have our expert logicians been during these many long years?

Tomorrow: Senator Hawley's logic

  3. Somerby says he is referring to Corinthians, but the phrase "through a glass darkly" comes from the film, not the Bible. The translation of the Swedish results in "through a glass darkly" but not the translation from the Bible or its variants, which refer to mirrors not glass.

One Biblical interpretation says: "Some scholars suggest that he [Paul, who wrote to the Corinthians] had in mind Corinth's famous bronze mirrors, known for their imperfect reflections."

The verse refers to partial revelation, not human imperfect understanding. All will be revealed later, Paul promises. This doesn't mean that a defect of human reasoning will be corrected but rather that more knowledge will be provided.

But Somerby mainly just likes the word "darkly" because it is as gloomy as his predictions and his sense of what humanity is like.

It makes more sense to think about the Bergman film, since only Bergman can out-gloom and doom Somerby. But I doubt Somerby has seen any of Bergman's films.

His cultural literacy would be more impressive if he had referred to the film, but that might make him dangerously elite. So back to the good old Bible.

The Catholic version says: "Now we see only reflections in a mirror, mere riddles, but then we shall be seeing face to face."

Or the NRSVCE says: "For now we see in a mirror, dimly,[b] but then we will see face to face. "

So clearly Somerby's quote is from the movie title, not the Bible.

    3. Ingmar Bergman = Swedish Director = Protestant
Bob Somerby = Irish Catholic by his own admission

The King James Version is protestant, hence Bergman's film title. The modern language versions also have it that way. But Somerby claims he didn't quote the film title. He says he got it from the Bible, but HIS Bible, the Catholic version, doesn't have that specific wording.

There is a lot of interesting discussion of why Bibles differ and what has influenced them.

Somerby told a lie. Either it was a lie about being Catholic or a lie about where he got his title (from the film or from the Bible).

You can find an extensive discussion of why a mirror makes more sense than a glass (e.g., window) in this particular verse, using Google. Since Somerby most likely didn't intend any allusion to the verse itself and just liked throwing the words extremely darkly into a phrase that seems to be about obscurity, it doesn't matter where it came from exactly. My complaint was that he never actually refers to anything when he "borrows" other peoples titles and that is unfair to those he borrows from. Sometimes his essays are so different than the title reference that it is offensive to those other authors. And it is so incredibly lazy.

    5. Scholars who go back to the Greek and Hebrew texts find that they are consistent with the Catholic version. That was the point of mentioning Paul's knowledge of the Corinthian bronze mirrors. 1 Corinthians was written in Koine Greek.

If you change the poorly reflecting mirror to a window then you must add a word like "darkly" because otherwise why would you not be able to see? A mirror does not reflect darkly.

    6. What possible difference would it make if Somerby quoted a phrase (which you wrote was not in the Bible) from the King James Bible?

Your posts invariably reveal you to be a disingenuous troll who is more full of shit than a Thanksgiving turkey, but occasionally you drive that point home to the nth degree.

      Thanks.

    7. No, I didn't say it wasn't in the Bible. I said that Somerby got it from the movie title, not the Bible.

I just explained the difference, which matters to religious people and definitely matters to Irish religious people.

      Delete
    8. Oh, no, you merely informed us about “darkly” being the Swedish to English translation.

Somerby wasn’t using the scripture in a religious context any more than “turn the other cheek” is automatically in that vein.

You run your mouth waxing ridiculous as you insult this man in every way that you can. Occasionally you manage to make yourself look sillier and pettier than usual. I suppose you should feel grateful that this is still possible.

      Delete
    9. I was merely pointing out that Somerby obviously got the phrase from the movie title since it isn't in the Catholic Bible at all.

You want me to believe that Somerby not only has a protestant Bible lying around but is more familiar with its wording than the Catholic version he would have grown up with, just so you can believe him when he says he didn't get it from the movie -- which on Wed he admits to having seen -- you are the one being pissy and ridiculous.

And I said a lot more than just Swedish to English resulting in Bergman's movie title, which is something else in Swedish, perhaps due to the translator being familiar with the protestant version of the Bible verse. Bergman didn't use the verse from Corinthians to name his own movie in Swedish.

You come late and jump into threads that you were not involved in initially, read incompletely (or disingenuously) and then start name-calling. You can fuck off if you don't like what I write. I don't like you much, you don't contribute anything to the discussion here, and you remind me why there are people dumb enough to vote for Trump -- they are no doubt like you.

    10. No, YOU had no idea that the King James used precisely that wording although it has long been a Bible verse cum euphemism.

You don’t have a conversation here. You have a pretext for a daily denunciation of the blogger.

He is also going to die, most likely a horrible death, just like capitalism is going to die. In the wake of capitalism's death, the question is whether fascism will triumph or we will embrace socialism.

Having said that, it is not morally wrong to wish for Trump's death (and every Republican wished for Obama's death) or anyone's death because WISHING HAS NO IMPACT ON ANYBODY.

If you think "wishing" can cause anything, you need to talk to Bandy X Lee.

  7. “In the end, as it turns out, Mudd wants Trump to go to jail.”

It’s par for the course that that isn’t actually what she said. She said :

“Mr. Trump deserves to be punished at the ballot box and to be held accountable for any possible criminal wrongdoing in a court of law.”

At any rate, Somerby implies that Mudd’s being a moral philosopher doesn’t give her any special insights into the situation. That may or may not be true. But he seems to most strongly object to her because her opinion matches that of “cable news hosts.” Well, maybe they are right.

Somerby thinks the answer to the child’s question should be “no”, and that Trump should be pitied. Does that mean he thinks Trump shouldn’t be rejected at the ballot box or “go to jail?” Does this make Somerby a superior moral philosopher or a better “liberal?”

I could wish that Trump when sick with Covid would have received the same treatment the poorest, blackest member of our society has or has not received. Kind of like a Twilight Zone scenario.

People do have a desire that rich, evil assholes, narcissistic or not, actually make restitution for their misdeeds and understand, a la Scrooge, the suffering they have caused.

I have no clear idea what Somerby wants in this election. I don’t much care.

I do find his “I pity trump” line to be ridiculous.

My question was: does Somerby’s pity mean that Somerby thinks Trump shouldn’t face legal consequences for what he has done? I find his “pity” to be galling and frankly insane.

    7. I agree. TDH is kind of Pollyanna-ish, with his pityinbg. If he thinks trump is a 'sociopath', I suppose he'd feel soory for stalin and Pol Pot. But, and again this is ridiculous, but he's made it very clear who he wants to be elected. there's not much limit in how irrational people can be. And just what crime is Trump supposed to be prosecuted for? It's kind of a fantasy that that would ever happen, or that there are actual grounds.

  8. "The question demands we grapple not only with the moral meaning of the president’s illness but also with our complex and contested reactions to it."

The professor wasn't "stumped" (as Somerby puts it). She had a conflicting emotional reaction that was different than her logical one. It is natural to wish bad things on those we dislike. But adults override that with their understanding that taking vengeance is wrong. One of the purposes of reasoning is to control emotional responses, just as the purpose of emotion is to inform reason about our needs and how we stand in relation to them.

Wishing for the president's death is a behavior, not an emotion. Feeling sad or happy about his illness is emotion. We experience our emotions as something that happens to us, not something we do or think. To the extent we can control and direct our thoughts, they too are behaviors, although thoughts can also be experienced as something that happens to us (as with obsessive thoughts or memories that pop into mind). We are morally responsible for the things we do, not for the things we experience unbidden.

Somerby blames Professor Mudd for not writing a philosophical treatise in the format of an op-ed. He is to blame for misunderstanding the purpose of Mudd's writing. His major clue that she was not writing a technical work is that she talked about her 7 year old child! That marks this as a personal rumination, not formal moral philosophy.

Usually Somerby doesn't blame authors for the headlines placed on their pieces by a headline writer, not necessarily that author. Today, he doesn't give Mudd the benefit of any doubt. He feels cheated because she didn't behave like a moral philosopher in the NY Times. Who is the fool here? Hint: it isn't Mudd.

Then Somerby complains because he reads her bio but he doesn't understand what her academic focus is about, calling it "salad" (which refers to word salad, which refers to the stream of consciousness strings of words produced by schizophrenics during psychotic episodes).

Somerby is being an asshole to a woman who wrote an essay (outside her research field) about how to feel about Trump without becoming a bad person. It isn't clear whether he actually thinks she needs to be more academic in her writing, or whether he thinks her entire career's work is bogus and means nothing important to anyone because he cannot understand it. His tone is unrelentingly negative toward her.

Somerby is a bitter man who apparently feels cheated because he got a Harvard undergraduate degree but still cannot magically understand everything difficult and complex about the world. He resents the people who do understand such things, feeling that they are pretenders speaking in tongues. He saves his ugliest tone for female academics and journalists, since how can a mere woman do better than himself in his own major (philosophy)?

Toward the end he says "perhaps highly Potemkin" and we see him call her work "pseudo", not daring to use the actual term "fake news" but meaning it all the same.

Does Somerby really want to read moral philosophy with his morning cereal? No one else does. He should understand that whatever her perspective, the essay isn't going to be deep. He seems to find the thoughts of a moral philosopher pretentious, but this woman has written enough scholarly work to claim that title, even if this piece is not intended as anything academic. It is Somerby's problem for expecting anything else.

Somerby suggests we should all play "Would you kill baby Hitler" with regards to Trump and covid. I don't like such games, but apparently they don't bother him, and that strikes me as colder than the people I would call my friends.

  9. "Are there any "Kantian approaches to contemporary topics" which could be of any real service? Again, we'll strongly suggest the possibility that the answer is no.

More widely, how often have press and professors joined hands to give us real instruction?"

This is hilarious. Kant has nothing to do with modern morality? Maybe not for Republicans.

Here is a brief internet summary, but you get the gist: "Kant's ethics are organized around the notion of a “categorical imperative,” which is a universal ethical principle stating that one should always respect the humanity in others, and that one should only act in accordance with rules that could hold for everyone."

No Republican would be caught dead adhering to such principles. Trump believes there is nothing immoral about anything he does but anything others do, that he dislikes, is deeply immoral. Why does it not surprise me that Somerby thinks Kant is irrelevant to contemporary issues?

And if Kant were only taught because he is a precursor to modern moral philosophy, that would be reason enough to thoroughly understand his principles. That is how a beginning scholar acquires the terminology and referential concepts and ideas needed to understand current work in such a field.

Somerby pretends he remembers enough about Kant to state categorically that he is irrelevant to contemporary issues, but I doubt that is true for Professor Mudd, whom I suspect is neither a wealthy conservative nor a mixed up blogger.

  12. My husband and I have been married for about 7 yrs now. We were happily married with two kids, a boy and a girl. 3 months ago, I started to notice some strange behavior from him and a few weeks later I found out that my husband is seeing someone. He started coming home late from work, he hardly care about me or the kids anymore, Sometimes he goes out and doesn't even come back home for about 2-3 days. I did all I could to rectify this problem but all to no avail. I became very worried and needed help. As I was browsing through the Internet one day, I came across a website that suggested that Dr Great can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he did a spell for me. Two days later, my husband came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I and my family are living together happily again.. All thanks to Dr Great . If you need a spell caster that can cast a spell that truly works, I suggest you contact him. He will not disappoint you. This is his E-mail:

Hello everyone, I am happy to share this Wonderful Testimony to the world... I'm  Victoria Matins and i am from Scotland. My husband and I have been married for 9 years with 3 kids, my husband and I had a little fight because of the way he has been going to nightclubs and keeping late nights and he has been cheating on me with another lady called bella, so because of this he wanted to divorce me and move in with her, i was so afraid to lose him because of our kids and i love him very much so i search online for help and i saw a lot of people's testimonies on how Dr BALBOSA help them and came out with positive results like Divorces, Cancers, lotteries, fertilities and others. So I emailed him and told him my problem and he responded and he told me what to do and I did it as he instructed, 24 hours later he told me he is done with the spell and my husband will no longer divorce me and he will always love me like never before. The next day my husband called me and apologized for all he had done to me and I was so happy to welcome him back to my life..so i decided to share this testimony to the world...I thank Dr BALBOSA for his help...
