SATURDAY: Kilgore reported some new swing state polls!

SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 2024

Then, up jumped the New York Times: In Wednesday morning's report, we ran through some recent results from some recent "swing state" polls.

Those surveys were conducted by Emerson College / The Hill. As we noted, the gloomy results were being happily bruited on Fox, but they were going unmentioned on our blue tribe's cable news channel.

This morning, at New York magazine, Ed Kilgore has made the current situation look just that much worse.

He starts by noting that a Democrat can easily lose the Electoral College while winning the nationwide popular vote. Then, he reports some newer "swing state" results, results drawn from new surveys conducted by Bloomberg–Morning Consult.

Headline included, Kilgore reports this:

Biden vs. Trump Polls: Joe’s Battleground Problem

[...]

In the most recent batch of battleground state polls, from Bloomberg–Morning Consult, Biden trailed Trump in a head-to-head matchup by nine points in North Carolina, six points in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Nevada, four points in Wisconsin, and two points in Pennsylvania. In a five-way trial heat including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein, Trump’s lead ballooned to ten points in North Carolina, nine points in Arizona and (shockingly) Pennsylvania, seven points in Georgia and Nevada, and six points in Wisconsin.

At least in theory, it's a long way from here to November. That said, those are horrible results, especially when that trio of third-party attention addicts are included in the hypothetical race.

From there, Kilgore proceeds to note the "slightly less dire picture for Biden" in those earlier Emerson College polls. The picture was "slightly less dire" in those earlier surveys, but Kilgore also says this:

"Again, the indicators [were] that even in a close national race, the president is trailing significantly in the states likely to determine the Electoral College winner."

"The president is trailing significantly!" So wrote Kilgore, earlier today.

(At the risk of creating a bit of confusion, this link takes you to a report in The Hill about those new Bloomberg surveys.)

Kilgore reported those gloomy results. Then, up jumped the New York Times, with a report about the results of its own new national survey.

Headline included, the Times report starts like this:

Voters Doubt Biden’s Leadership and Favor Trump, Times/Siena Poll Finds

President Biden is struggling to overcome doubts about his leadership inside his own party and broad dissatisfaction over the nation’s direction, leaving him trailing behind Donald J. Trump just as their general-election contest is about to begin, a new poll by The New York Times and Siena College has found.

With eight months left until the November election, Mr. Biden’s 43 percent support lags behind Mr. Trump’s 48 percent in the national survey of registered voters.

Only one in four voters think the country is moving in the right direction. More than twice as many voters believe Mr. Biden’s policies have personally hurt them as believe his policies have helped them. A majority of voters think the economy is in poor condition. And the share of voters who strongly disapprove of Mr. Biden’s handling of his job has reached 47 percent, higher than in Times/Siena polls at any point in his presidency.

No doubt this is all a mistake! Can't we just get Trump thrown in jail?

It's still a long way from here to November. That said, we report these gloomy statistics in line with the old "Why did you climb Mount Everest?" bromide.

Why do we report these depressing statistics? In line with traditional journalistic practice, we report them because they're there!

  1. Somerby, as usual, fails to mention that Trump has been underperforming compared to poll predictions for the last several primaries. That raises the question of whether he might also underperform in relation to these early general election polls. Underperformance means that Trump is not bringing in the percentages of votes predicted by polling.

Somerby says he does not want Trump to be elected again, but you'd never know that from the way he talks about Biden. Somerby has his own podium here and he could do a lot of good for Biden by discussing Biden's many achievements and strong performance this term, and his plans for a second term. A simple comparison of Biden's term to Trump's, coupled with the threats Trump has made for his next term, would remind any casual reader here of what is at stake. Instead Somerby repeats negative poll results, over and over.

So how can we take Somerby's stated preference for Biden seriously? And clearly, if this is how Biden voters support their candidate, no wonder the polls are so bad.

What a crock of shit! Somerby is no journalist. And it isn't as if Biden's strong results are not also there. They are more there than these tenuous poll results are. Crickets from Somerby on anything Biden has done well, and there is a lot there to talk about.

And what about all the other topics that are equally "there" but never discussed at this blog? I hope no one here is stupid enough to believe this bald-faced lie that Somerby just told about his motives.

  3. "No doubt this is all a mistake! Can't we just get Trump thrown in jail?"

The left is not doing anything at all to "get" Trump thrown in jail. It is not our agenda. We are trying to win the next presidential election.

Trump already did a bunch of things to get himself thrown in jail. We are waiting for the wheels of justice to turn and hold Trump accountable for his crimes -- all of them.

The snide way that Somerby dismisses the trials reflects a lack of concern about serious crimes such as the mishandling of highly classified documents, resulting in their exposure to foreign entities (for money or favors?) and others who should not have access to them. That is a threat to national security that has not yet been resolved. And then there was the attempt to overthrow the 2020 presidential election, an attempted coup involving many Republicans in a fake elector scheme coupled with violent attack on the Capitol in which Trump was expected to declare martial law (according to Proud Boys and Oath Keepers). That is illegal in many ways and Trump needs to be tried for his coordination of those efforts.

Somerby cannot care about our government and our nation if he expects anyone, especially prosecutors and the DOJ, to ignore these serious threats to our democracy. But Somerby thinks this is an opportunity for snide remarks and accusations of partisan blood lust -- AIMED AT US, not at the Republicans who ignored the law to try to steal power.

I don't know what is wrong with Somerby that he would say something like this.

  5. Biden's poll results may not be within the margin of error for the poll itself, but it is clearly within the margin of error for the upcoming election, given the large uncertainties and trends already being observed.

Nikki Haley is showing Trump's weakness with women and non-MAGA Republicans. There are insufficient MAGAs left to allow Trump to beat Biden if Haley voters switch to Biden or stay home. Independent voters swung for Biden in 2020. Undecideds may do the same, when they start paying attention to the election. Polls are also showing that many voters do not know about Trump's massive fraud verdict, much less his rape/defamation verdict. They have no idea what is going on in the GA election tampering trial, the documents trial or the insurrection trial. What will they do when they find out?

There is also a broad trend nationwide in which Republican voters are rejecting the extremists and crazies down ballot. This should warn (scare) Republicans. The RNC is out of money and major donors are abandoning MAGA candidates. Grassroots donors are decreasing their funding of Trump and his rally attendance has decreased. Trump's own expulsion of Hayley voters from MAGAdom may come back to haunt him in the general election. He said enough to alienate non-conservative black voters. And then there is Trump's dementia and other health issues. None of this suggests he is doing well in his campaign.

I see a bunch of reasons why focusing on these early poll results and concluding that Biden will lose is a mistake. Given that Somerby is so good at making negative predictions, why has he not noticed the liabilities Trump's campaign is facing? He has never mentioned any of this stuff, to my knowledge, which should eliminate any doubt about where his sympathies lie.

  7. Somerby keeps saying that Biden has too low energy to campaign effectively, because he walks stiffly (or whatever), but Trump can no longer deliver his standard campaign speech. He appeared in North Carolina today and this is the report:

"What stood out to some on the internet wasn't the medical emergency. Instead, it was the several instances in which the former reality TV star flubbed his lines, glitched, or otherwise slurred through his standard stump speech.

In one instance, Trump was discussing the border when he said, "We call it migrant cime," appearing to leave the "r" out of crime. "I came up with that name because I come up with a lot of good names."

Conservative columnist Tom Nichols said the people in Trump's audience "mostly know he's beyond addled now."

"You can keep showing it to them, and they don't care, because they think it'll be a hilarious lib-own to put him back in the White House and hand him the codes to 1500 nuclear weapons."

  10. This is relevant to the poll results Somerby is touting today.

"A Weird Result from Today’s New Poll
March 2, 2024 at 12:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

The new New York Times/Siena poll which shows Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in the presidential race, 48% to 43%, also asked voters who they voted for last time.

The survey respondents claimed they voted for Biden in 2020 by a 53% to 41% margin.

Of course, Biden only won the national popular vote by 4.5% in 2020 — not the 12% as this poll shows.

    So what’s going on?

It could suggest that voters have a bias toward saying they voted for the winner, even when they actually picked the loser.

If so, it dramatically throws off the statistic I cited earlier that only 83% of Biden voters say they plan to vote for him this year.

If this poll is correct, a decent chunk of those “Biden voters” didn’t actually vote for him in 2020 even though the told pollsters they did.

They were simply Trump voters in 2020 who say they are voting for Trump again in 2024."

He has expanded on that theme, that the left just wants to march Trump off to jail, in several past essays. It was his position during Trump's impeachment and also during the 1/6 Hearings. He has opposed every prosecution of Trump for anything.

    23. I don't think Biden is capable of convincing anyone of anything.

Piper I don't think any of those things you mentioned resonate right now with American people. They don't trust institutions right now. Trust in institutions is shockingly low. If anybody wants to say these things about " rising wages" etc, to them, it just sounds like more of horseshit from a political operative who has lied to them over and over and over. I would like to see Biden try to say those things though. I mean it must have been tested already and determined that he can't do it or his attempts to do it would fall flat.

There's more to the issue than just the economy seen through these bureaucratic statistics which you site. That's how I feel about it. I feel Americans maybe can't articulate it and it may be totally unconscious but they realize deep down that we live in an amoral military empire. And that makes theses stunning and historical statistical numbers about rising wages etc. that have you so jazzed something for which they can't get all that enthused about.

Not to even mention that the "economy" is vastly biased towards the rich anyway.

Voters who are workers in the trenches in these swing states in question don't give a fucking shit about "rising wages". THEY don't have rising wages. These are tens of millions of people who are all on a treadmill of debt to fucking nowhere and they know it. And they know politicians put them there. So it's a tough political issue. But I hear you.

  15. Trump is likely to self-destruct at some point and say things that some of his followers may not be able to accept. That may cost him votes and split his MAGA supporters over religious belief. According to Rawstory:

"In interviews with Salon's Chauncey DeVega, they were asked about the religious fervor that has engulfed the former president's MAGA followers, with DeVega proposing, "Trump’s delusions of grandeur have been escalating as he continues to proclaim that he is some type of messiah-prophet, chosen by 'god' and 'Jesus Christ' to lead the MAGA movement in an epic End Times battle of good and evil against President Biden and the Democrats and 'the left' to 'save America' by winning the 2024 election."

With that in mind, Katherine Stewart, author of “The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism," suggested that the former president may have reached a point where he has begun to believe it himself.

Calling Trump's increasingly hyperbolic and apocalyptic rhetoric ("I am your retribution") "anything but normal," Stewart suggested the embattled former president and his base have reached a point where they have lost touch.

In her interview with DeVega, she explained, "As for Trump’s claims about being a prophet or some type of messiah, I think we have here a convergence between what appears to be Trump’s mental disorder and the needs of a base that has been primed for fascism. The only surprising thing about Trump’s claims is he has not yet said he is better than Jesus. That is sure to come! "

    5. Look how @5:50 uses only the electoral college to tell us Biden is "unpopular" when he got the highest popular vote count in history, way higher than Trump. Manipulating swing states to win the electoral college is what Russia helped Trump do in 2016. It isn't as if Trump actually won then, which is why he lost in 2020 without Comey or other meddling.

Trump is toast. If Biden is old, he can still perform as president. Trump has dementia and there is no way he wouldn't be a puppet of anyone close to him. And he cannot deliver any kind of speech any more. As today's news pointed out, he has lost more court cases than anyone else in history, partly because he cannot participate appropriately in his own defense. Now the guys who helped him with Truth Social are suing Trump for stiffing them. And you think this guy is going to win? What a fucking joke.

      Base rate fallacy.

    7. It's not that Trump is horrible. Take that as a given. It's that he is the favored candidate if the election were held today. We are putting our marbles on a candidate who has trouble speaking, who is not popular by any metric and who is trailing significantly in battleground states. That seems like news worth discussing.

You don't think Biden's family likes him?

    Biden's Approval Trends Aren't What 538 Claims

"...And what do we see? Far from being in free-fall, Biden seems to be improving. "

  24. A new lawsuit claims Trump has perpetrated another massive business fraud by trying to stiff his partners at Truth Social. From Rawstory:

"Just the other day, Raw Story reported that co-founders of Donald Trump's media company accused the former president of scheming to lock them out of a stake in the company potentially worth millions of dollars.

Trump Media & Technology Group, which owns Trump's Truth Social platform, is trying to merge with a special purpose acquisition company called Digital World Acquisition and go public, and the co-founders say they are being ripped off for their share of the proceeds.

It might seem like a standard civil lawsuit, but some experts have flagged the case for further attention.

Democratic political strategist Simon Rosenberg said on social media that it is a "HUGE STORY."

"It needs to be understood that Trump is being accused of having committed new crimes, a massive new fraud, by his FAN BOY BUSINESS PARTNERS," he wrote.

Former federal prosecutor Elizabeth de la Vega also chimed in: "New crimes, new massive fraud for Trump," she wrote Friday.

Alex Wagner, host of "Alex Wagner Tonight," also brought up the issue on her show on Friday and in a written MSNBC post on Saturday.

"They claim Trump is essentially trying to cheat them out of their share of the company, just as it’s about to go public and potentially net Trump billions of dollars — if he can sell his shares," she wrote, adding that the co-founders' "lawsuit now threatens Trump’s much-needed payday."

  25. Primary results matter. Poll results? Not so much. As reported by Rawstory:

"Reacting to the latest primary results that show Donald Trump has not consolidated conservative support for his third bid for the Oval Office, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) offered some friendly advice to the former president that the numbers likely won't be there in November for him.

Appearing on MSNBC's "The Weekend," the California Democrat — and Trump antagonist — claimed that Trump may be the GOP frontrunner, but his outreach to voters is coming up short with a substantial number of Nikki Haley voters professing they won't vote for him if he is the GOP's presidential nominee in 2024.

Asked about Trump's prospects, Swalwell stated, "I would rather be us than Donald Trump right now."
