...they said he should pee in a cup: No serious person forms an opinion about a State of the Union address until The Five have had a chance to check in.
Yesterday, at 5 o'clock sharp, the Fox News panel began a lengthy of President Biden's address.
As usual, the panel was evenly split, with four (4) standard Fox News types arrayed against one (1) lone liberal. Serving as moderator, resident loudmouth Judge Jeanine offered this initial overview of the president speech:
PIRRO (3/8/24): It's five o'clock in New York City, and this is The Five.
It was must-scream TV! The president yelling at Americans for over an hour during one of the most hyper-partisan State of the Unions.
President Biden's lack of leadership was on full display in a speech designed to please his base of MSNBC flunkies and not the American people.
One of the chyrons said, OLD YELLER. The discussion continued from there.
The first segment ran until 5:13. At that point, the judge teased the program's second segment in the manner shown:
PIRRO: Coming up, "a tour de force." Joe Biden's clapping seals in the media give a slobbering review of his State of the Union.
We'll say this for Judge Jeanine. Yes, she may be a world-class loudmouth. But when she's cast in the moderator role, she plays it right down the middle!
After a commercial break, that second segment unfolded. By its conclusion, an overall assessment had clicked into place:
President Biden was hopped up on drugs during Thursday night's address.
After several feints from several performers, it fell to TV's silliest child to articulate this assessment. Lone liberal Jessica Tarlov had finally addressed the insinuations, leading to this declaration:
WATTERS: I'm not a doctor, but they are giving him something, Jessica!
If you see a horse, and the horse is old and injured and mopes around the barnyard, and then all of a sudden you race the horse and he fires out of the gate and laps everyone, what did they give the horse?
Jessica, the man has walked around lethargically for the last three years. Barely picks his head up, can't hear, is out of breath, falls asleep, skips dinner internationally, dies out during funeral processions.
All of a sudden, this guy is like on speed or something, Jessica. To dismiss it like, "Oh, he's definitely clean"— He should pee in a cup.
PIRRO: [LAUGHTER]
There was more to this gentleman's diagnosis. But you've now gotten the general drift of the program's initial half hour.
At 5:27 p.m., it fell to substitute panelist Shannon Bream to tease the program's third segment. For the record, it seems to us that a serious point of concern did arise during the upcoming segment:
BREAM: Coming up, Laken Riley's mom ripping into President Biden for fumbling her daughter's name.
In our view, this next segment did involve a teachable moment. In this morning's New York Times, Annie Karni reports on the general topic while omitting one event:
KARNI (3/9/24): As he made his way to the rostrum, Mr. Biden gasped and appeared taken aback by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, the hard-right Republican from Georgia, who had dressed herself as a one-woman political protest. She wore a red “Make America Great Again” cap and a T-shirt emblazoned with the name of Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student allegedly killed by a Venezuelan migrant, a horror story Republicans have used as a cudgel against Mr. Biden.
“It’s about Laken Riley!” she cried out later from her seat during the segment of Mr. Biden’s speech devoted to the U.S. border with Mexico, in which Mr. Biden blamed his “predecessor” (as he referred to Mr. Trump all night) for tanking a bipartisan border security bill.
Ms. Greene saw her moment, interrupting the president to call the suspect in Ms. Riley’s killing an “illegal.” The authorities have charged a Venezuelan migrant who crossed into the United States illegally and was then released on parole. “Say her name!” Ms. Greene shouted.
In response, Mr. Biden did, in fact, say her name, albeit botching the pronunciation so it sounded more like “Lincoln Riley.” The president referred to her as “an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal—that’s right.”
“But how many of thousands of people are being killed by legals?” he said.
[...]
He added: “To her parents, I say, my heart goes out to you. Having lost children myself, I understand.”
The president’s off-script use of the term “illegal” drew immediate pushback from progressives. “No human being is illegal,” Representative Delia Ramirez, Democrat of Illinois, posted on social media shortly after he uttered the word.
For what it's worth, we've seen no videotape in which Taylor Greene refers to the alleged murderer as "an illegal." It may be that she actually did, but Karni offers no source for the claim.
That said:
This was one of the most dramatic moments in which Biden ventured off-prompter during Thursday's address. When he did, he made a series of errors or apparent errors:
He mispronounced Laken Riley's name. He then used a term which generated instant pushback from a wide array of progressives.
Also, he authored that peculiar question about the "thousands of people being killed by legals." The utterance was interpreted in various ways on various sides of the aisle.
That said, this morning's Times report didn't include what happened next. Here's the way Jesse Watters introduced the third segment on yesterday's The Five:
WATTERS: Joe Biden, botching the name of Laken Riley, the Georgia nursing student brutally murdered at the hands of an illegal alien. Watch:
[Videotape of Biden and Taylor Greene]
WATTERS: Laken Riley's mom slamming Joe Biden as "pathetic" for fumbling the name of her daughter, and adding this: "If you are going to say her name (even when forced to do so) at least say the right name.
And Democrats are upset because the president called the killer "an illegal."
[Videotape of several Democrats criticizing Biden for his use of that term]
As the segment unfolded, Biden was slammed for mispronouncing Riley's name and for failing to speak to her parents. Democrats were slammed for allegedly caring more about language issues than about the murder of Riley itself.
The report in this morning's New York Times omitted the statement by Riley's mother. Also, it included this passage—a passage which is perfectly accurate, but speaks to a claim we've seen no one make on Fox:
KARNI: (For years, studies have found that undocumented immigrants have much lower crime rates than citizens born in the United States and legal immigrants across a variety of offenses, including violent crimes, drug crimes and property crimes.)
That passage addresses a claim we've seen no one make. Here are the claims which have been widely made by red tribe observers, even on such clownish programs as The Five:
Familiar claims on red tribe TV shows:
For the bulk of his first three years, President Biden made no serious effort to stop the rapidly increasing flow of unauthorized immigrants across the southern border. As a result, an untold number of violent people were presumably able to cross the border along with everyone else.
It was one of those violent people who is alleged to have murdered Laken Riley. For three years, the Biden Admin made no serious effort to staunch the flow across the border, even as they kept insisting that the border was secure and closed.
It seems to us that red tribe pundits are raising perfectly valid points when they make such arguments. Until big city mayor began to complain, it seems to us that the Biden administration had been weirdly silent about the vast increase in chaos at the southern border.
As part of this package, a very large number of unvetted people have been allowed to stay in the country over the past several years. One of those people was Jose Ibarra, who has been accused of the murder of Laken Riley.
In the wake of this highly publicized murder, remarkably clueless blue tribe pundits have laughed about the silly voters who see the border as a major issue. In one case, a major figure at MSNBC seemed to be unaware of the most elementary facts about the killing of Riley.
Completing the rule of three, the president then mispronounced Riley's name in the course of making a jumbled off-prompter presentation. So it goes in our unsustainable modern world—in a world whose major news orgs are often rigidly "segregated by viewpoint."
Thanks to this rigid segregation, we live in a modern Babel. Red tribe voters hear one set of facts. Blue tribe voters—even blue tribe media stars—may be completely clueless concerning topics which are going viral on the streets where they and their colleagues don't live.
Or then again, they may not care. We can't rule that out.
The clowns at The Five were in typical form during the bulk of yesterday's program. There were moments of typical clown-car stupidity which we haven't even mentioned.
The Five is an imitation of life, a gruesome parody of journalism. In the end, it seemed to us that yesterday's program also raised some reasonable points.
Red tribe voters mourn a killing; blue pundits crack jokes and laugh. So it goes in our rigidly segregated America—in America Red and Blue.
Can a large modern nation really function this way? Go ahead! Take a good look around!
Biden criticized Putin, and said he wanted to help American citizens. The Right thinks anyone who does that must be on drugs.
ReplyDeleteThe right comparison for the crime rate of illegal aliens is the crime rate for legal aliens.
ReplyDeleteThe crime rate for immigrants is lower than native born Americans, the crime rate for undocumented immigrants is even lower than both.
DeleteThe vast majority of crimes are committed by White male native born Americans, with the higher rates being in red states. That’s the true public enemy.
Jewish actuaries have a very low crime rate. Close to zero.
DeleteThis clip shows Biden in a bad light. Do you agree? https://spinstrangenesscharm.wordpress.com/2024/03/08/biden-minder-quits-shares-the-clip-of-the-senior-moment-that-made-her-do-so/
ReplyDeleteI think that page falsley calls her a "Biden Minder". I don't think that's true.
DeleteDavid in Cal would rather vote for a criminal.
DeleteBiden is not perfect, but he’s likely our best president since FDR. I’ll be voting for Biden, it’s an easy vote.
DeleteWhat did you think of the clip, @1:01?
DeleteIt's a little strange to not remember the name of the terrorist organization that was responsible for the worst day in history of Israel less than 6 months ago. It seemed to be definitely a senior moment.
DeleteThe link is to a right wing conservative “comedian” who has no connection to Biden, just another Trumper showing an edited clip out of context to give a false and misleading impression for suckers like DIC.
DeleteDIC there are unedited, in context clips of Trump glitching and mispronouncing and making weird noises and incoherent statements EVERY DAY, his cognitive decline being so painfully obvious, his new nickname has gone viral - Dementia Don. What do you think of those clips, DIC?
The clip from the right-wing propagandist is the same as the raw clip.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvn3vwjZU9k
You are correct though to see those edits and suspect her of doctoring the video with edits.
@1:34 I don’t like Trump’s gaffes. I wish my party had a younger candidate. As bad as Trump and Biden are now, whoever we elect will still be in office almost five years from now. Ugh!
DeleteThe clip is deceptively edited in a way to highlight the unremarkable and momentary lapse, something everyone experiences daily.
DeleteBiden has gaffes that are normal for everyone, and related to his lifelong stuttering issue. Trump has gaffes that demonstrate an increasing cognitive decline issue.
Neither case is particularly worrying, since the US has procedures and policies in place to deal with an incapacitated president.
Both are elderly and showing signs of age; Biden is a strong president pushing for progress, Trump is a corrupt conman looking to feed his personal emotional and monetary needs. It’s an easy choice.
Biden did fine.
DeleteThis "clip" shows Trump in a bad light. Do you agree? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y44fyh4ap7k&t=829s
DeleteThe clip purports to show a "Biden minder" who has quit. It does not. It is a video from a satirical web site. The authenticity of the video should be considered in that light.
DeleteIf "blue tribe" pundits respond to all of the viral topics MAGA pushes into public view, that's all we'll ever talk about. We spend too much time on nonsense as it is. If we let MAGA set the agenda, it won't be an improvement.
Quaker makes an excellent point. If we follow Somerby’s advice, the blue tribe would do nothing but respond to the latest made up bullshit from the right wing. That is exactly what they want. It is a trap. Next question: why does Somerby advocate this?
Delete"Blue tribe voters—even blue tribe media stars—may be completely clueless concerning topics which are going viral on the streets where they and their colleagues don't live. Or then again, they may not care. We can't rule that out."
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting idea. As a blue tribe voter I am fascinated by topics that are going viral in that world (to keep your enemy closer, oppo research etc.). But a lot of my peers are not at all. I don't understand why that is. It may be apathy as a way of keeping the story and characters simple as possible. Yet, there is greater power in understanding their thoughts and discussions. Occasionally, one must engage with scenarios where they raise perfectly valid points. Perhaps it's a resistance to confronting these scenarios, but therein lies the source of power.
We also have to keep in mind Blue Tribe power structures may want to shield us from some of the Red Tribe's viral topics because they do raise valid points. But this also can help us understand our leadership and position within that power structure.
“May be”, “may not”, “can’t rule that out…”
DeleteSuch definitive writing. Somerby may not be wrong, or full of it, or possibly could sort of be, in some way. I can’t rule that out.
1:19 You are definitely a dick.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree that this is a very interesting idea, indeed. I just read this fascinating take on Senator Britt's SOTU "response" (or whatever the hell it was), which I viewed with the same horrified amusement as so many other blue tribe voters:
Deletehttps://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2024/03/worlds-in-collision.
I don't, for the life of me, see any valid points in Britt's or Fox's Five's reactions to Biden's speech. But the idea that they are speaking a language it would be wise to learn how to read with real understanding is compelling, if sadly so.
Somerby points out that the immigrant crime rate is much lower than the native born crime rate, and notes that Biden made the same point.
DeleteSomerby fails to demonstrate that the red tribe has raised a valid point (indeed the point in question is invalidated by Somerby himself in the very same post).
Very curious, Somerby’s post in full seems fairly incoherent.
This may be the valid point to which he was referring, no?
Delete"For the bulk of his first three years, President Biden made no serious effort to stop the rapidly increasing flow of unauthorized immigrants across the southern border. As a result, an untold number of violent people were presumably able to cross the border along with everyone else."
That point is inaccurate; Biden did address issues related to the border in his first three years and in a manner similar to previous presidents, the increase in crossings is recent and was addressed with a bipartisan proposal which was curiously defeated by the red tribe - by the very ones who came up with the proposal, it’s not an “untold number”, it’s been studied, immigrants have a much lower crime rate than native born Americans.
DeleteSomerby debunks the main point in his post, and overall, fails to demonstrate the red tribe making a valid point, or anything even close to one.
Also too, Sommerby never mentions that these "illegals" are vital to our world best economy. As a factory consultant I've seen hundreds of low wage nasty ass factory jobs that only have Spanish speakers completing them. Like hanging insulation on 220°F steam pipe on a scaffold in a building with a ceiling temp of 145°F. They wear ice vests, and are never white. Met a new safety director at a slaughter house and told him you gotta be kidding me when he said he didn't speak Spanish.
DeleteThese so-called viral topics are total bullshit. What is there to understand? The right made up a bunch of lies to tell about the SOTU and Biden. Giving them credence is more than they deserve. It is all crap.

ReplyDeleteHere's Matt Taibbi's take:
"State TV Slobbers Over State of the Union
Could state media in the GDR, Soviet Union, Maoist China, or Pinochet's Chile have reviewed a leader's speech as breathlessly as Joe Biden's State of the Union?"
Fox News may be crappy TV, but hey, at least it ain't State TV. Be grateful, Bob. Or keep being outraged, if that's your pleasure.
Matt Taibbi of nothingburger fame, throws his right wing fans a bone. Has there ever been a less relevant “journalist”? Lordy, Taibbi is worse than those Fox News robot, who at least are upfront with their partisanship..
DeleteTaibbi's argument for "State TV" is backed up by facts like MSNBC had two former White House communications directors giving positive reactions about the speech immediately after.
DeleteFormer WH staff have been highlighted on corporate media for decades. Taibbi is just angry he’s not making the big bucks, trying to con suckers with yet another one of his famous nothingburgers.
DeleteFox News employs many former WH staff, they are more like “state tv” than any other media, including in those authoritarian states mentioned.
Taibbi will keep on raging, solely motivated by his concern for making money.
Ie. MSNBC has two former White House communications directors on staff, hired to give "objective" opinions. And a number of ex FBI and CIA as well. That doesn't really make sense journalistically.
DeleteIt makes sense because they have inside knowledge, it’s the same people Taibbi drools over to interview, but is envious because he doesn’t have access.
DeleteFox News is much worse, employing an army of former Republican staffers to push propaganda on their rubes. At least CNN and MSNBC are more straightforward about identifying those people as partisans.
This is rich coming from Taibbi who tried to buddy up with Elon Musk and his billions, happily being Musk’s stenographer in order to manufacture ignorance, and then whining and crying when they didn’t become best buddies.
Matt Taibbi? LOL.
DeleteWas Newt Gingrich not available?
Given all the lawsuits, it makes sense for a cable station to have experts on staff to help interpret what is going on in court-related news. The major TV stations (NBC, ABC, PBS) have hired such experts too. They aren't being hired to be partisan but to translate legalese into normal language and interpret decisions. Calling them partisan seems a bit unfair to them.
DeleteKatie Britt’s oratorical style is normal in her bubble.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2024/03/worlds-in-collision
The state could engage pro-actively with countries like Mexico and Guatemala to work on housing, jobs, education and therapy programs. Instead the US and Mexico have agreements on how harsh to treat people on the border. So there will always be some people who are destabilized enough to be violent, even if it's at a rate lower than Americans who are born here not somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteThe corporate media are not telling the true story of how the border is designed to increase illegal crossings, it uses choke points to encourage people to cross in some areas more than others. The current border is not designed to stop all immigration, regardless of what anyone says, and such a thing would be a ridiculous and absurd monument to media paranoia anyway.
The corporate media are not covering the environmental collapse of Guatemala, or the collapse of lack of stabilizing civil society in over-militarized Honduras. They're just saying that some amorphos mob of immigrants are getting tired of their own countries being lame and are trying to "invade" America "to vote Democrat." It's really hysterical screeching, and that isn't intended to resolve the issue.
What American power, both liberal internationalists and conservatives really want, is for a large degree of fear and suspicion loom over their underclass workers, who keep picking their food for them, but aren't allowed any political power. The fear about immigrants voting Democrat is basically cover for a way to deport any Mexican who wants to form a labor union.
Kamala Harris has been doing that.
DeleteKevin Drum looks at a small part of Katie Britt’s speech:
ReplyDeletehttps://jabberwocking.com/the-tale-of-katie-britt-and-the-sex-trafficking-victim/
Somerby very kindly repeated all of the talking points on Fox about Biden's speech. Why would someone who claims to support Biden do that, here, at a supposedly liberal blog?
ReplyDeleteThey only broadcast lies and ridiculous accusations in order to harm Biden's candidacy. Repeating that stuff does nothing to help anyone know the truth, nor does it help Biden get reelected, so why would Somerby do this?
Over here on our side, there has been discussion of the "fundie baby voice" used in the SOTU rebuttal by the Christian Nationalist woman who broadcast from her kitchen in order to show us how trad wife she is.
ReplyDeleteThose on the left are discussing the various right wingers who are baldly stating that they want to repeal the 19th Amendment (the one giving women the right to vote), institute household voting (in which only the head of a household votes, and women cannot be heads of household but are always responsible to their fathers if not a husband). This doesn't come from the left as a slam on the right, but right wing candidates and politicians have been saying this stuff.
For more info on fundie baby voice: https://jesspiper.substack.com/p/the-fundie-baby-voice
It does strike me that Somerby may object to Rachel Maddow because her voice is so different from this prescribed subservient women's speech. Same with Hillary, who spoke with confidence and assertiveness and yet was called screeching or nagging. On the other hand, MTG and Lauren Boebert haven't got the knack of speaking properly yet. Perhaps their male heads of household will school them on it.
Here’s more about Katie Britt and the sex-trafficking survivor. The trafficking occurred in Mexico, while George W Bush was president of the US.
ReplyDeleteSenator Britt’s presentation was baldly deceptive. I strongly recommend the following link:
https://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2024/03/you-can-see-it-in-her-eyes
The sex trafficking victim escaped her captors and fled to the United States. Britt and the GOP would slam the door against others like her.
DeleteIt’s possible to argue that Dems were not aware of the BS Fox was cooking up during the Obama years. Certainly Bob knew nothing about most of it after birthergate. When they pretended to be concerned over deficit spending ( necessitated by W) Bob backed them up. Pure bullshit like the IRS scandal? Bob had his hands full demonizing Rachel Maddow.
ReplyDeleteBut no one is ignorant about Trump and his attempts to install himself as dictator. Bobs good friends and neighbors are happy to serve as his subjects. Or they are blinded by their selfishness and hatred. Immigration is merely an excuse to indulge in racism as it is any reactionary group thirsting for totalitarianism.
Here is some left-wing commentary on Katie Britt's speech:
ReplyDeletehttps://digbysblog.net/2024/03/09/before-and-after-2/
It compares her normal speaking voice with her fundie baby voice used in her speech.
Trump has his own ponderous doom and gloom voice that he uses to talk about how horrible things will be when Democrats win. I'm sure his voice switches too when he strings together a bunch of lies. And then there is his semi-bored voice when he is reciting well-rehearsed lines from his campaign speech repertoire, punctuated by weirdness when he goes off script and says things that make no sense, such as that windmills cause whale deaths.
DeleteI'll bet an AI could be trained to recognize the parts where he is spouting nonsense that he doesn't care whether anyone believes or not, and when he is bragging by exaggerating imaginary accomplishments.
Somerby says The Five reviewed Biden's speech. I think they didn't do that -- they spread misinformation about it, including that Biden was on drugs. That is a wholly made up negative story with no basis in truth. But given that so many Republican accusations are actually projection of things they themselves do, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump and everyone else in the White House was taking Ronny Jackson's Dr. Feelgood special pills during Trump's term. And that's where the accusation comes from, because Trump probably couldn't perform without special medication. So they, of course, think Biden must be doing it too, when I find it extremely unlikely to be true (or necessary).
ReplyDeletePublic reaction to violent crime perpetrated by immigrants is similar to public perception of airline crashes.
ReplyDeleteAirline travel is by far safer than travelling by motor vehicle. Nevertheless, hundreds of daily fatalities in auto accidents go unreported. An airline crash--or even a near miss--makes national headlines.
Likewise, dozens of daily murders across the country barely warrant the notice of local news outlets. A single murder by an immigrant is a subject for deep coverage and heated debate.
Why does the American public respond this way? Beats me. If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with the illusion of control. When we drive a car, we feel as if we're in control of our own safety. Similarly, when we feel like our law enforcement agencies are keeping out unknown and unfamiliar people from other places, we feel as if we can safely navigate our little worlds.
But here's where Our Host gives red tribe pundits too much credence, in my opinion. Ms. Riley's alleged killer crossed our southern border as an undocumented migrant from Venezuela. He was released into the country to await a hearing, traveled from city to city before landing in Georgia where Ms. Riley was killed. Red tribe pundits loooove to use this crime to stoke outrage among their viewers. Would they be so quick to shout about a crime where an undocumented immigrant from some European country killed an American who wasn't a young coed? I don't think they would.
In short, I believe red tribe pundits are cynically using Ms. Riley's death for their own ideological ends. What's the best way to respond? I'm not sure taking them at their word is the best way to go.
Biden was taken aback by the way MTG was dressed. He wasn't close enough to her to hear her say anything, or to read the buttons on her jacket. The Laken stuff came later, during his speech.
ReplyDeleteMTG was dressed entirely inappropriately for the SOTU address. She was not wearing business attire, but had on a red baseball jacket and a red MAGA baseball cap, with political buttons on both.
There is a longstanding rule (going back to the 1830s) that congress members NOT wear hats on the floor of congress. MTB was in violation of that rule (just as she tries to evade other rules that others abide by). Like her muttering and yelling during the speech itself, her attire was designed to attract attention to herself. Biden's mock expression of shock was making fun of her obvious attention-seeking behavior.
The interaction about Laken took place during Biden's speech. He went "off prompter" to address MTG's yelled comment. Few regular viewers will find anything wrong with his doing that or with calling the migrant "illegal". Ibarra's older brother was released into the US after seeking asylum. It seems possible the killer was also, which would make him not illegal. Several reports stress that reporters are uncertain about his legal status in the US.
A serious issue:

Regulations are good:
ReplyDeletehttps://jabberwocking.com/we-are-living-in-a-golden-age-of-light-bulbs/
A CNN post-speech instant poll showed that 65% of SOTU viewers offered a positive review of Biden's speech. There was a 17-point shift among viewers toward believing the country is headed in the right direction, moving from 45% before the speech to 62% afterward. The 65% positive view from the CNN poll was the lowest for any State of the Union speech the network has polled in the past quarter-century. Only 35% of viewers offered a "very" positive review, which is about tied with Biden's speech the previous year for the lowest on record. The next lowest were Biden's 2022 speech.
