RATIONAL ANIMAL TALES: Atticus Finch complicit in murder!

Suggestions of Woke Gone Wild:
Not that many days before Christmas, we read a rather peculiar interview piece right there in The Atlantic.

Much of the blame for this interview piece goes to David Sims, the magazine's apparently Brit movie critic.

Sims is so sexist that he listed Little Women as only the ninth best film of last year. This seems to suggest that he may even agree with the "idiotic" Golden Globes, who didn't honor Greta Gerwig with one of their (five) Best Director nods.

In the typical way of These Critics Today, Sims attempted to cover his tracks in his capsule review of the film. He offered a somewhat comical appraisal of the way Gerwig reworked the famous 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott—the famous book from which the film derived its name and, of course, a substantial chunk of its box office appeal:
Little Women is filled with admiration for Alcott’s characters and story, though it’s not afraid to boldly tweak some of the book’s flaws.
Acording to Sims, Gerwig wasn't "afraid to boldly tweak some of the book’s flaws." This seems to include the greatly flawed way Alcott's novel ends.

Gerwig's film is filled with admiration for Alcott’s story—except for the way it ends! As everyone from Gerwig on down has now noted, Gerwig tweaked that flaw!

At any rate, Sims' sexism was stunningly clear in his ranking of Gerwig's film. In an angry display of The Woke Perhaps Gone Somewhat Wild, the New York Times' Manohla Dargis savaged the Globes for the "idiotic," sexist way they refused to honor the film.

Dargis specifically named two female-directed films which weren't sufficiently honored. In a possible instance of Woke Run Amok, the other film she named was The Farewell, a film she herself didn't include in her list of last year's 42 best!

We know—it sounds like that can't be true. But that's the sort of thing which can happen when we start letting Woke Run Wild—and yes, The Others can see us when we do this.

We've spoken so far about Sims' take on Gerwig's well-reviewed film. That said, Gerwig's film wasn't the focus of the peculiar interview piece we encountered in The Atlantic.

Sims' piece concerns another famous book which is currently being "interrogated" by one of our tribal sachems. That book is To Kill A Mockingbird, whose flaws are currently being addressed in Aaron Sorkin's Broadway adaptation.

Sorkin took his title, and the bulk of the interest in his play, from a famous 1960 novel whose flaws he has boldly addressed.
We're not quite sure why people decide to make films and plays from books they may not actually like. But we'll guess that the sacrifices these auteurs make may tweak box office receipts.

As Gerwig fixes the flaws of Little Women, Sorkin cleans up Harper Lee's novel. In last month's Atlantic piece, Sims interviewed Sorkin about the play which has now been on Broadway for an entire year.

We thought the interview with Sorkin (and with actor Ed Harris) was strange in quite a few ways. The exchange we're posting below might be the place to start our discussion.

In Lee's famous novel, one major character is a (fictional) lawyer and father whose name is Atticus Finch. In the past, he's generally been well regarded—all in spite of something Sims and Sorkin finally managed to spot.

As Sorkin notes, eighth-grade teachers were never willing to discuss Finch's most obvious sin! The bracketed material appears exactly as shown in Sims' peculiar piece:
SIMS (12/17/19): I had forgotten that To Kill a Mockingbird also ends with a crime—the [murder] of Bob Ewell [by Boo Radley, trying to protect Scout]—being covered up!

SORKIN: Isn’t it amazing? I had forgotten about it too, and I couldn’t believe it!

SIMS: It’s a story about the greatest lawyer of all time—Atticus—and he’s complicit in this crime!

SORKIN: This novel ends with, as Scout said, “the most honest and decent person in Maycomb” covering up murder with a judge and a sheriff. Why didn’t that ever come up in my eighth-grade class? I saw that and thought, Well, I can tell this exact same story, but can’t that [tension] be part of it from the beginning?
Just for the record, Scout doesn't make the quoted statement in Lee's actual novel. The quoted statement is taken from Sorkin's name's-the-same play, in which the characters are finally allowed to say all kinds of things which Lee kept out of her book.

That said, tell the truth! Had you ever even noticed the fact which Sorkin and Sims had "forgotten?" Did you ever notice that To Kill A Mockingbird ends with Atticus Finch covering up a murder? The murder of Bob Ewell?

For today, two questions:

Are Aaron Sorkin and David Sims as smart as a bunch of eighth-graders? And what sorts of lessons might we learn about our species, the rational animal, from the current wave of emanations of #WokeMaybeGoneWild?

Tomorrow: Atticus sasses Cal

    'Maybe', dear Bob?

  4. If Somerby had waited 10 minutes for the Oscar nominations to be announced, he could have noted that Gerwig was again bypassed for a Best Director nomination, despite Little Women being nominated for Best Movie again.

When a book is translated into a movie, many changes are typically made, and yes, the endings are often changed. Characters are omitted, plot lines are simplified, dialog is changed, that's why there us an Oscar category called "Best Adapted Screenplay". The writing effort involved in adapting a work of fiction to another medium is often considerable, enough to merit an award for that creative effort.

And yes, I did notice that the murder was covered up when I read the book in high school, and I wondered about it. If Somerby didn't, perhaps it was because he was younger when he first read the book.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Little Women is the first in a series of books with the same characters. It brings forward some of the events of the later books. That isn't the same as "fixing the flaws" in the novel.

  7. The Brits are so woke that they have driven Meghan Markle out of the country with their tabloid racism. But we're supposed to think a Brit named Sims has something to tell us about iconic American literature?

Somerby has a sarcastic tone but it isn't clear what he is trying to say today. Is he upset because Sims put Gerwig's film on his top 10 list, or is he upset because Sorkin changed things as he made a play out of a book? Are we supposed to think that all of these folks are stoopid because the human race is doomed? Or is he saying that Sims is not sexist because he put Little Women on his list, so the women are all wet because they keep complaining that Gerwig didn't make the Best Directors list -- no women were on that list, none, nada, zilch. Just a bunch of men who made some not very good films of the type that other men like to watch (cases in point, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, subtitled Been There, Done That).

Or is Somerby saying that inclusion of Gerwig's film on any top 10 lists is a sign of woke-gone-wild because everyone knows that girls can't make good movies? Every woman in the audience knows how the book ends -- we have all read it. The ending wasn't just changed, but there was a scene where Jo is forced by her editor to change it, because a realistic ending won't be commercial. It is a scene about compromises and cliches in women's fiction and expectations for their lives (marriage is the only happy ending). Which Somerby is insufficiently woke to appreciate, apparently.

    1. I’ve been under the impression that Ms. Alcott gave us a woke ending.

She let Jo have it all. No had a career as a writer, was an advocate for the poor, and was blessed with a marriage to an interesting and intelligent partner and thus had all the promise of the tragedy of family life with babies.

      Delete
    2. Woke is an ending that doesn't rely on marriage as the source of women's happiness.

In Gerwig's film, Jo isn't shown married but has turned the house she inherited into a school. She is surrounded by her sisters and their families and a bunch of children shown engaging in creative activities of various kinds. Her mentor from NY returns and agrees to stay but there is no marriage depicted. She does modify the ending of her autobiographical book because the editor demands a marriage at the end. The film thus discusses whether marriage is necessary for Jo's happiness.

      Delete
    4. If having husbands and children were a vocation, women wouldn't have to continue serving them if they held another full time job. Maybe you are saying that women are happier when they have only one full time job, instead of two?

Men are happier with wives and children, certainly. Why shouldn't women be happier with husbands and kids too? Despite having to do all the housework and childcare, working or not.

  8. Would Boo Radley have been charged in real life? I don't think so. He wouldn't have been considered mentally competent and there was no intent if he thought he was protecting Scout. If so, wouldn't the failure to charge him be justice rather than a cover up? That this happened with the involvement of the Sheriff and a judge suggests that it is equivalent to a D.A. deciding not to prosecute, not a cover up by Atticus. I'm not sure why Sorkin is describing it as a crime. Sims is British and may not understand the US legal system.

"Despite the verdict, Bob Ewell feels that Atticus and the judge have made a fool out of him, and he vows revenge. He menaces Tom Robinson’s widow, tries to break into the judge’s house, and finally attacks Jem and Scout as they walk home from a Halloween party. Boo Radley intervenes, however, saving the children and stabbing Ewell fatally during the struggle. Boo carries the wounded Jem back to Atticus’s house, where the sheriff, in order to protect Boo, insists that Ewell tripped over a tree root and fell on his own knife. After sitting with Scout for a while, Boo disappears once more into the Radley house."

    Turkey

In other words, it won't include any countries whose leaders are buddies with the Trumps. The travel ban country list isn't about safety, it is a presidential shit-list that (thanks to a 5-4 majority in the Supreme Court) now has the force of law."

  10. The term "woke" doesn't sound good in Somerby's mouth because he is antagonistic to everything it denotes.

Do liberals use the word woke ironically or sarcastically? Not so much.

His usage to refer to sexism broadens the term beyond racial and social injustice in ways that are far removed from the original usage. African Americans have historically rejected comparisons of their struggle for racial equality with women's issues and there is intersectionality but the originators of the term weren't thinking about sexism.

Who lumps all the "social justice" issues together? Liberals? Again, not so much. Liberals tend to respect the differences and wouldn't be inclined to group all of those annoying demands by activists into a single category, referring to them all as "woke gone wild" as Somerby does.

The alliteration is nice, but on what planet does anyone think that it is too much, a bridge too far, when women complain that they don't get nominated for their fair share of movie awards? This is an equal pay issues because award nominees can demand higher pay, so if women never get nominated they remain underpaid in the industry.

But Somerby says woke has gone wild, is excessive, is out of control, because women object when a woman whose film is on everyone's top 10 list (as her last film, Lady Bird tended to be) is not also nominated for best director.

What was nominated: Scorsese, Tarantino and Sam Mendes, the maker of a war movie 1917, Todd Phillips, the maker of The Joker and Bong Joon-ho, the highly talented director of Parasite, a South Korean film. With the exception of Parasite, these are testosterone fueled films aimed at men. It is time for the movies to recognize that women also buy movie tickets and want to see movies made by and for women. Out of 10 nominees for best picture, only Marriage Story (by Noah Baumbach) and Little Women (by Greta Gerwig) fit that description. Two out of eight films. No wonder the film industry is struggling.

Dear dembot, just outta curiosity: are you saying that men and women are different, with naturally different mindsets? Mars - Venus, rough and tough vs squishy and sentimental, and all that?

Interesting. Is this not the definition of 'sexism'?

      Delete
    2. Who says that different interests or mindsets are "naturally different"?

Sexism is defined as: "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex"

Don't confuse demands for equal treatment with an assertion that men and women are exactly the same. To the extent that both are human, they should be treated as human beings.

      Delete
    3. "Who says that different interests or mindsets are "naturally different"?"

You did. Or so it seems. "testosterone fueled films aimed at men" vs "movies made [...] for women".

Why should women have different interests than men do? Are you not stereotyping?

      Delete
    4. Men and women are socialized differently. Not all men like the fast & furious, monster, superhero genres either. And some women do enjoy those films, but when there is an abundance of male-oriented films and not much that appeals to women, the market is skewed and that is not only unfair to women but also not good for the financial prosperity of the film industry, which has been struggling. Because the industry itself is dominated by men with set ideas, there is little chance for new and different films to be made. That is why there exists an Indie film genre. But the Indie films have difficulty attracting funding.

You tried to put words into my mouth that aren't what I intended, but you know that.

      Delete
    5. "Men and women are socialized differently"

Ah, so you backing out from gender essentializing. Okay.

So, yes, men and women are often brought up differently. That's because of the traditional 'gender roles'. Which I feel is fine, but I have the impression that it's anathema to the 'woke'.

But you seem to accept it just fine, and you're even outraged that it's not reinforced enough by the entertainment industry.

      Delete
    6. Gender roles that subjugate one sex to the other are not fine.

Somerby hates Little Women. Little Women plays with gender roles and it challenges the traditional expectations for girls and women, just as the book did, but with a modern overlay. It was also innovative in its presentation of time and pacing, and it presented women as active, self-sufficient, and ambitious. You can see why Somerby would hate it.

      Delete
    7. My point is that you are promoting gender roles, when you insist that the men enjoy macho bs and the womyn enjoy tear-jerking bs. And I was curious how it can coexist together with wokeness, inside the same skull. But okay, I give up.

  11. How is it “woke” to probe the character of the liberal saint Atticus Finch and find some unexplored territory there?

    ReplyDelete
  12. In real life, Louisa May Alcott never married and never had children. She was a staunch abolitionist and feminist who admitted to loving women rather than men.

Not much of that made it into her book, Little Women, which had autobiographical elements, and as such, it seems reasonable to re-examine the book as Gerwig has done.

One suspects that Alcott’s actual views would not have sold as well as her book did.

At any rate, Somerby provides absolutely no evidence that either Gerwig or Sorkin didn’t like the books they dramatized. One gets precisely the opposite impression reading the Sorkin interview.

Funny thing is, the race baiters who have latched on to "To Kill a Mockingbird" as relevant to Martin-Zimmerman incident are endorsing precisely the type of police corruption they suspect in this case and claim to abhor.

    1. I suppose it depends on what you mean by "all the time."

      From Wikipedia:

"With regard to the rape allegations made to police or campus authority that are proven false after a thorough investigation has established that no crime was committed or attempted, estimates generally vary from 2% to 10%.[1] Due to varying definitions of a "false accusation", the true percentage, however, remains unknown.[2] Some studies in Europe and the United States have indicated rates between two and six percent.[3] Studies in other countries have reported their own rates at anywhere from 1.5% (Denmark) to 10% (Canada).[4]

Rates of false accusation are sometimes inflated or misrepresented due to conflation with terms such as unfounded. These designations, which allow law enforcement to close cases without arriving at a conclusion, are used to describe reports without enough evidence to prosecute, as opposed to cases where the victim is not credible or says that the account is untrue."
