Also, a touch of the labyrinthitis: As it turns out, Pete Hegseth was a team player at the Fox News Channel. As it turns out, he had been working for weekend rates:
Financial Disclosure Reveals How Much Pete Hegseth Was Making at Fox News
The Washington Post’s Jeremy Barr shared a portion of Hegseth’s disclosure on X Monday, which showed his Fox News salary to be just a bit over $4.6 million over a two-year period. Hegseth’s impressive haul came from his role at Fox News as one of three co-hosts on Fox & Friends Weekend as well as his work on Fox Nation.
That's the start of Alex Griffing's report at Mediaite. Instantly, a question arises:
Was Hegseth paid $4.6 million for each of the past two years? Or was he paid $4.6 million for the two years combined?
Based on the disclosure document, we aren't entirely sure. Either way, Hegseth had plainly humbled himself by working for meager weekend pay. He was working a full two mornings per week, but he was only getting paid a bit over two (or four) million per year!
Griffing's report continues as shown below. We can't swear to the accuracy of the O'Donnell numbers, which track to the New York Post. Maddow's numbers have been reported so often that we're inclined to assume they're accurate:
Hegseth’s disclosure means he was earning a little more than half CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell, who had her annual salary cut by more than half in 2022, from $8 million to less than $4 million.
However, his earnings paled in comparison to Fox’s Sean Hannity, who reportedly earns $25 million a year. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reportedly took a pay cut recently from $30 million a year to $25 million a year as well while only hosting her show once a week—although she is returning full-time for the first 100 days of Trump’s second administration.
We've long believed, and we've repeatedly said, that we the people should know how much these "cable news" figures get paid. In theory, a lot of devotion to Storyline can be purchased, depending on the amount of money which is changing hands.
Meanwhile, Recurrence of the labyrinthitis! We awoke this morning to our fourth attack of "The Big L" over the past twenty years.
We managed to get this morning's report done, though we wish we'd been able to articulate our basic framework with greater clarity. To wit:
We know of no reason to believe that our society will be able to recover from the longstanding attack of the flyweights—some of whom are probably willing propagandists, some of whom may be mere true believers.
We know of no reason to believe that our failing American culture will be able to recover from the ongoing disorder which now defines our discourse. But we wanted to get off to a better start that we were able to manage.
We badly need to start saying their names! We badly need to develop a journalistic language with which we can describe what these flyweights do.
Calling them "liars" doesn't work; also, it might not be accurate. But we badly need to start saying their names, and we need to describe what they do.
I don't know if Hegseth will be a good Secretary of Defense, but I'm impressed with his patriotism. Giving up a multimillion dollar salary in order to serve his country. You have to respect that.
ReplyDeleteDavid, Hegseth will be in on the various grifts, so he will make more money, not less. You are a fool to think that the published salaries for these public service jobs are all that these guys will take home. Was Trump's only compensation in his last term his published salary as President? Obviously not.
DeleteHegseth would have to be honest to be giving up anything, and we know that is not the case.
DeleteThe humble task of having the most powerful military in history at your command. David please vomit the red Kool aid already. We get it you don't like the blue kind.
DeleteWe undertax millionaires, because they aren't patriots and hate the USA.
DeleteThat makes too much sense to be completely true.
i know plenty of extremely patriotic people that i wouldn't want running the DoD
Delete
DeleteNow would be the perfect time to give all your billions to the government, Mr. Soros.
Operators are standing by to take your call!
David in Cal,
DeleteNo worries. Hesgeth will b a terrible Secretary of Defense. The only thing he's ever run is his mouth.
Somerby apparently thinks on-screen journalists and personalities (no one would ever call Hannity a journalist) should work for peanuts, especially compared to other types of entertainers. I've never heard Somerby complain about the huge salaries paid to even the least valued athletes on pro teams, or the coaches for that matter. He doesn't complain about actors' salaries. I doubt he would object to stand-up comedians' salaries. So why then are those in entertainment roles on cable stations supposed to be underpaid.
ReplyDeleteYou don't need a salary to coerce such people. You can coerce them by denying them exposure, screen time, limiting their jobs to fewer evenings per week or a less visible time slot. You can deny them promotion of their show. Any of God's children will know what is good for them or bad for them to do in whatever their job happens to be. This idea that journalism talent should be starved in order make their reporting pure (when someone else writes their copy and Fox definitely prescribes its political content) is unfair and ridiculous. But he has been beating this drum forever, usually urging that those he dislikes be punished with low salaries. Maddow in particular, even though she has superstar status in TV news reading, has a doctorate and actually does research and writes books on her topics of expertise, which puts her worlds ahead of Gutfeld, not to mention Hannity.
Somerby hasn't made sense before he developed his current ailment, so that is not to blame for today's lack of clarity. He just doesn't make sense most times.
We get it, you like Ayn Rand.
Deletehe has never advocated for lower salaries, he simply advocates for full disclosure so people can weigh motivations for themselves.
DeleteAgree 100%. We should know everything that happens at private companies.
DeleteFull audits released to the public on an annual basis is a good first step.
The agreement to release the hostages, after Trump threatened Hamas that "All Hell will break out!" shows that threats and bullying do sometimes work. And, in this case they worked in a way that brings the world closer to peace.
ReplyDeleteBTW watch Biden try to take credit for the cease-fire and laugh. :)
This is happening during Biden's term, so Biden gets the credit. We don't know what deals were in progress while Trump was swaggering around making threats. Biden isn't "taking the credit" that belongs to Trump. Biden deserves the credit. If anything, Hamas may recognize that Biden is a reasonable person whereas Trump is a loose cannon (at best) and a total nutjob more likely, so he cannot be trusted and would be worse to deal with. This is their last chance at sane diplomacy because Trump is incapable of it.
DeleteYou are exactly right @5:47. Hamas recognized that Trump is a loose cannon (at best) and a total nutjob more likely, so he cannot be trusted and would be worse to deal with. That turned out to be an advantage. It’s why the hostages will be released.
DeleteBiden and his staff have been working on this cease-fire for a long time and it is finally coming together. Trump can blow up the deal by not honoring its terms once he takes office, but he in no way has put this deal together. Biden deserves the credit for this achievement.
DeleteIf Biden were a dishonorable person, he could have left Trump with a mess in Gaza. Instead he has been working, even after Trump won, to make things better for Israel, Gaza and our country. That's because Biden is a true public servant, not someone concerned with only his own interests, the way Trump is.
Recognizing that Trump would be worse, is not to Trump's credit. If the roles were reversed, there is no way Trump would leave office by making things better for his successor. That isn't what he did in 2021. Biden deserves credit for continuing to do his best job for the American people no matter who they inflicted on our country as the next president.
"Biden and his staff have been working on this cease-fire for a long time and it is finally coming together."
DeleteIt would have happened earlier, but according to some Civil War historians, Biden had a cold.
Not funny
DeleteNetanyahu will not be going to the inauguration after Trump posted a very negative commentary about him by Jeffrey Sachs.
DeleteInstead of being proud of one puppet of capitalism over the other, you could alternatively just reconigze that the D's and R's work as a carrot and stick approach to consolidating power.
Delete@Anon 10:24 Bibi also might be feeling reluctant to travel outside of Israel right now. The ICC isn't acting too friendly.
DeleteSomerby calls his essays "reports" as if they were not wandering, incoherent, messes of propaganda.
ReplyDeleteWandering incoherent messes, yes. But propaganda? No, they’re beneath propaganda.
DeleteWHAT HAPPENED IN 1965?
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles replaced Bob Dylan.
DeleteHe was referring to the Voting Rights Act and his theory that liberal elites have cynically used black voters primarily as a talking point or a tool for mobilizing their base instead of addressing real issues in black communities like economic inequality.
DeleteSo, Somerby thinks that civil rights advances are elites (ie libs) cynically using black people because LBJ’s war on poverty only reduced poverty by a large amount but not completely? I think this is more evidence Somerby is an old racist, assuming this is what he thinks (or said).
DeleteIf you question the status quo you will be encouraged to seek reeducation
DeleteEnsuring that blacks could vote did not address a real issue in black communities, Hector?
DeleteI'm not sure, Hector. He keeps saying he "was there" for whatever event he's been hinting about. How does that square with the VRA?
DeleteAlso, he has said that many reports place the event in early 1966, but he says it "could have been" as early as fall of 1965.
DeleteDoesn't seem to fit.
You all are boring.

"Trump Planning to Visit California as Soon as Next Week
ReplyDeleteJanuary 13, 2025 at 5:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 60 Comments
“President-elect Donald Trump is planning to visit fire-ravaged Los Angeles as soon as next week to view the damage and assess recovery needs,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The exact timing of the visit remains in flux, but Trump’s advisers are tentatively considering a trip to the city late next week, following Monday’s inauguration.”
This is a joke. Of course the timing is in flux. The winds are picking up in LA again today and the Palisades fire is 14% contained. What is the point of "assessing" the damage and recovery needs when there may be new fires springing up as the winds increase again? Maybe he just wants to see how much Californians are willing to suck up to him.
orange chickenshit hasn't gone yet, but Prez Musk sure did a good job of proving what a monumental lying jackass he is recently with the firefighters.
DeleteMeanwhile Elon Musk for some reason got to question the LAFD as if he has any authority and then went on to lie about their efforts on his person propaganda site.
Deletepersonal
DeleteFlyweights, that's being an "operator" "disseminator" "paid hack" "pot stirrer". You get to avoid accountability because what you said feels right to people enough that they won't bother you if you "lie."
