We rename the Washington Football Team...

...and we move Aaron Rodgers along: Should the Washington Football Team remain the Washington Football Team? Or should it get a new name?

The conversation drags on. In this morning's Washington Post, Robert McCartney plumps for Washington Redwolves.

We happen to have a better idea. We've had this idea all along:

We'd like to see the Football Team renamed the Washington Americans. The iconography could remain the same. As far as we know, nothing was ever cartoonized or derogatory about the team's previous visuals, at least not in the recent past.

"The Washington Americans," linked to those dignified, respectful emblems! We know, we know—it can't be done! But an observer can dream.

(For what it's worth, Yankees and Celtics are ethnic team names—though we know it can't be done.)

While we're at it, we've also solved the problem of where to send Aaron Rodgers. We'd like to see the Buccaneers acquire the young signal-caller to serve as Tom Brady's back-up.

Rodgers could watch and learn for a couple of years, possibly playing a few fourth quarters to give Terrific some rest. At some point in the future, if the star San Matean decides to take  a sabbatical year, the Chico native could imaginably be ready to step in.

The Washington Americans! By far, it's the best name we've heard.

  1. Is it right for Somerby to be discussing sports when so many beautiful black kids in Baltimore are getting low NAEP scores?

This phrase -- in parenthesis -- is the sole reason for the whole post, nicht wahr?

Heh. Nice. We appreciate your sarcasm, dear Bob.

  3. I'm not sure it is the fact that these names are ethnic that is the problem, but the cultural appropriation of an ethnic name that does not belong to the group using it.

The large number of Irish in Boston makes use of the name Celtics appropriate. There are no American Indians in Washington DC or on the team. That makes it a cultural appropriation, and that is the problem, not the ethnicity of the team name. Because it is a cultural appropriation, the Indian heritage is shown no respect and the team icons are demeaning stereotypes. In contrast, a largely Irish audience would stand for that kind of demeaning treatment of anything Celtic, because that is their own heritage.

Somerby, of course, reduces this to an incoherent outrage against sports fans, because that is what Fox News does with any cultural issue. It is Fox News here, all the way down and our own anthropologists are wailing and tearing out their hair at the way Somerby misunderstands such issues.

    1. The entire concept of cultural appropriation is bullsh_t IMO. Indian tribes are honored when teams are named after them. The naming means that these tribes are respected for their courage and strength. I would not e upset if a team called themselves the "Jews".

    2. The best judge of whether the tribes are honored or not would be the tribes themselves.

    3. The problem isn’t that there are no Indians in Washington. The problem is that the term Redskins is racist. David in Cal is so confused about this that he thinks Redskins and Jews are equivalent. More like Indians and Jews, Redskins and Hebes.

  4. This is Mental Health Awareness Month, but oddly Somerby seems to be done talking about mental illness.

    1. Somerby is a Trumptard, so his talking is itself a demonstration of mental illness, since Trumptardism is a mental illness
