Improbably, Abrams did something: In 2018, Stacey Abrams narrowly lost her race to serve as governor of Georgia.
At that point, she did what no one ever does. She went out and actually did something.
In an interview with the New York Times, Abrams tells the story of what she did. The story she tells dates back to 2010.
Given the current state of our national culture, it's very, very, very unusual to see someone go out and do something. We especially recommend this part of the doer's tale:
ABRAMS (11/25/20): I traveled around the country raising money for House races, and getting people to invest was nearly impossible, people didn’t see the validity of a Georgia victory. They pointed to the 2008 election when the Obama campaign determined that we weren’t viable yet, so there was no investment. In 2012, I couldn’t leverage that there was going to be investment from the campaign as a hook for getting donors to come in. So it was a really small cadre of donors, largely philanthropists that I’d taken myself to meet. I’d say, “I know you don’t believe Georgia is real, but let me tell you what it can look like.”
Each cycle, I would take that same deck and update it and say: “Here’s where we were. And here’s where we going. And while this thing feels incremental, let me tell you what’s different now.”
I have always loved those lines, “Give me a place to stand and I can move the world.” Well, give me a place to stand and I can convince you Georgia is real.
When's the last time you saw someone at this level go out and accomplish something? As best we can tell, Abrams selected a place to stand and moved one part of the world.

ReplyDeleteAbrams’ impressive work is praiseworthy. But it doesn’t mean that some people ought not “go to prison” or otherwise face consequences for serious misdeeds. Political calculations can sometimes overrule the idea of seeking legal redress, but surely there are some misdeeds too egregious to overlook. Misbehavers tend to continue misbehaving if not held to account.
Also, as a matter of fact, lawsuits were part of Abrams’ efforts in Georgia. While the aim wasn’t sending anyone to prison, it was to demand accountability and correct injustices:

ReplyDeleteOf course Somerby is referring to what he terms the liberal “tribe’s” desire to see Manafort, Flynn, Stone, Trump et al “go to jail” or otherwise face legal consequences for their actions.
His use of the term “go to jail” as in “yay yay yay we love to put the others in jail!” was his taunting response when Rachel or others reported on the unethical behaviors of Zinke, Price, Flynn, Manafort, Trump, and the others, even though jail was not the remedy in several of those cases.
Zinke and Price were merely self-dealing; Trump, Flynn, Manafort, Stone, Giuliani...these people have done serious damage to our democracy. They aren’t just guilty of unethical behavior. And yet, pursuing justice is just tribalism to Somerby.

ReplyDeleteThis is not only untrue, but an unfair thing to say. Biden lead didn't come from nowhere or from magic. It came from a lot of hard work by a lot of Democrats. We flipped AZ and won NV, plus all those blue states that went to Trump in 2016, and we built up too big a margin for Trump to plausibly claim corruption. A lot of people did that together.
I understand that Somerby generally does nothing but contemplate his pear tree, but he shouldn't project his own laziness onto others who do not deserve to be maligned that way.

ReplyDeleteI admire Abrams too, but I think Nancy Pelosi did something over the past four years. Whatever relief people struggling with covid have gotten, has come from her efforts (she never seems to get discouraged). I also admire the way Gavin Newsom has handled covid in my state. I would say that Fauci has been accomplishing a lot too, and all those public officials in various states who have been getting death threats. I am sure others have their own lists too.
There are a lot of accomplishments by collective humanity that happen because of anonymous hard work by many people. When Somerby denigrates our society, he is ignoring that collective effort.
I have no doubt that he feels he has accomplished little over his lifetime. No one would argue with him about that. But that doesn't extend to others, whether involved in politics or doing other important jobs.
Somerby is such an ass.
Abrams is part of a tradition of black women's activism in politics and community organizing. When they say that black women are the backbone of our party (Democrats), efforts like Abrams are what they mean.
